Animorphs

So I heard somewhere that they're revamping the Animorphs series. For those who don't know about it (and are thus that much more uncool) it was a late 90s book series about a group of teens who could change into animals who fought off a secret alien invasion. Real good stuff, but it ended like way long ago. So I heard that they're planning to re release the series, so a whole other generation can enjoy the stories. But... they're planning to change pop culture references to fit the current trends.

:bigeek:

In some ways, that's sad, because the books reflect the pop culture of my childhood from the 90s, so I don't want them to change. (And what's Marco going to call Rachel now since there isn't really a Xena show out there?) And what about the whole book about the Internet... its almost like a relic from an ancient age where they used such primitive systems. (Also, AOL) And the airport security they dealt with in that same book is nothing like today's. On that same note, one thing I remember about the book set in New York is that it identified the World Trade Center... sadly, that is no longer possible. :(

So I don't know what to think about this new release. Of course, I probably won't buy any, since I have a majority of the series already. Although if I do happen to see one of the books I never got on shelves... well, I'll have to think about it, because when the Animorph series ended, I started funneling all my money into Bionicle instead, and there are still plenty of Lego products out there. ;)

I remember seeing those on the shelf at the library when I was little. I never read any though because they weren't really on my mom's "approved book list".

Edit:Wow, I really messed that up.

Hmm. Revamped Animorphs? I can't really think they could ever improve on the original, but they've caught my interest.

I'll be watching out for this. :sly:

All I can say is, he obviously won't be calling Rachel Bella Swan any time soon.

Perhaps Marco can refer to her as Myka? Or even Jo Lupo from Eureka.

Regardless, I also agree that it should not be revamped to today's trends. Why not write it to match, y'know, not today's trends?

Heh, I've never heard of rereleasing books and adding in some modernity before. Weird.

(I can understand making a movie off of them, not that I would recommend it.)

But hey, if we get another generation of Animorph fans!

I just wanna know what fiction characters Jake and Maroc will put into hypothetical battle senarios. Will it still be Batman vs Spiderman? Or will they be moving on to video game icons like a fight between Master Chief and Samus Aran?

I loved these books as a kid....

But changing the culture references is about as stupid as movie studios refusing to release older movies for being "racist"

It's a reflection of the times, and changing it is just offensive.

Ok, a quick online search has given me a better understanding of the situation. They don't want to rerelease all 54+ books of the series. I guess what it would entail would then be refocusing the story/plot to allow for less books, but longer books, so everyone involved is not worked so hard.

They mention how nowadays with the advent of cell phones (which can do pretty much anything), there are plot holes that weren't around in the late 90's.

And other minor details like that.

It does not look like this is getting off the ground any time soon, so I'm not worried. (Actually, I don't think I'm worried right now at all, or later, because I've got better things to do than worry about it.)

Ooh, Animorphs. It also took my mom a while to warm up to them...but these were some of my favs back in the day. I eventually stopped reading 'em, but I remember reading the last one in Target one day...just because I HAD to know how it ended. I need to get some of my own copies(always just got 'em from library). I don't know how these new ones would be received...the old ones were classic and should not be messed with, says I!

Sidenote: In mine and my sisters' imagined Bionicle mythos, the planet was colonized by mechanical creations that had been designed to hold a human's sentience to continue the "human race" by genius scientists(who infused themselves into bigger, stronger bodies - Toa), because the human race was about to be wiped out by a biological super-weapon that had been deployed by humans to fight the Yeerk invasion of earth. It went horribly wrong and there was no chance for humanity to survive...except in mechanical bodies. And wow, that sounds terribly confusing...but thought you'd enjoy that, Jason. :D
