Just Voted

Romney/Ryan, Election 2012 and 3 more...

Woke up, ate breakfast, went to my morning Econ class, did an hour workshop for my English class, Voted for Mitt Romney/Paul Ryan (and all the other things I could vote for -- I looked at each measure/candidate extensively last night before choosing which way I would vote). And I am wearing my Les Miserables T-shirt. A great day. ^_^

If you live in the US, and are legally able to, go vote! Go do it. Take advantage of this great Right we have and go vote. And don't just vote for the President/VP -- vote for your State and County Measures. Vote for the other office candidates. Those matter too, and you should take advantage of this amazing Right -- this great honor that we have as American citizens to vote. Use this ability, this Right, this honor. And go vote.

Happy Hallowe'en, everyone! I wrote this poem a week or two ago for my Creative Writing class (with no direct inspiration from HP Lovecraft, though he is a great writer -- credit goes to Tolkien for the title), and felt it was fitting for Hallowe'en -- one of my favorite holidays simply because I love reading Hallowe'en-esque stories such as A Monster Calls, by Patrick Ness, anything by Edgar Allen Poe (seriously, that guy is a genius. A mad genius, but a genius nonetheless), etc.

So tomorrow I plan on reading some of those aforementioned scary stories and using the rest of my free time to finish planning for my NaNoWriMo novel (as I hope to finally participate this year).

Comments on the poem are very much appreciated, and don't forget to wish Harry Dresden happy birthday!

Love, Relationships and 3 more...
53 Things to do Before a First Kiss, by Kraggh

Honestly, that is one of the most awesome things I have read on BZPower. I've always thought that many relationships today are flawed, and the intentions that people have are...well, I guess, wrong. Now I'm not sure that I agree that all of these should be/need to be done before a first kiss, because I feel like that's something that you need to just kind of "let it come" when the time is right.

I don't think of this so much as a "to-do list" or "bucket list", but rather, just a list of amazingly cute couple things that would be simply awesome to do. Because I think the focus should be on each other, on doing things like this (pure, innocent things) together -- the relationship should be about your thoughts, intentions, and attitudes toward one another. I definitely think that all of these things should be done at some point (or, rather, that it would be incredibly awesome if they were done at some point), but again not in a way of checking off things as you do them, but just things to do that would keep the relationship pure and focused on each other. Basically I just feel like this is a list that would be incredibly awesome to do -- not that everything would, necessarily, be done, but that I wish all of these things could be done, even before a first kiss.

This really leads into my thoughts on love and true love -- things that I think are really, really misunderstood in society today. I mean, honestly, if you can do all of this, before even a kiss, that means something. I'm not saying this all needs to be done before a first kiss, but the intention should be there -- that you're not so much concerned about kissing, etc., but more just concerned about each other, and the purity of the relationship. I honestly can't think of any reason not to do any of these...if you're bad at singing (like I am), so what? That's just what makes this list so awesome, that a lot of these things you would be making a fool of yourself, but done with the right person and that's something extremely beautiful.

I've started to write a blog entry on true love and relationships, etc., probably at least half a dozen times now, but every time I do I end up straying into religion or something else not appropriate for BZPower. I still want to some time, though...who knows. But honestly, this is just an amazingly beautiful blog entry and awesome thing.

The (in)Sane Man

Villanelle, Poetry and 2 more...

Villanelle written for my Creative Writing class.

The (in)Sane Man

They say you were always sane,
But in truth your heart is black;
Every attempt to fix you was done in vain.

They say there is something wrong with your brain,
Perhaps it is from your time in Iraq,
But they still insist you are sane.

Laymen, they do not understand the pain,

The horrible pain you endured through every attack.
They try to help you, to heal you—but it is all done in vain.

They lie to you, trying to wane

Any possibility of you getting your true self back.
They keep lying, saying you are sane.

They won’t give you freedom, force you to wear a chain,
Won’t give you anything to get back on track.
They think it will help, but they are just vain.

Everything they do is inhumane,
Every word you say is answered with a vicious whack.
They keep telling you you’re sane.
But you do not believe them; their efforts all done in vain.

Okay, so, I'm not particularly pleased with this (hence just posting it here and not in COT), but I figured I'd post it anyway. It's taken from an idea I had a while ago for a short story, and I really think I should've just left it for a short story, but my poem was due in a couple hours and this was the first semi-workable idea that came to mind, so I went with it. I still hope to write the short story some day, as I like the idea (which wasn't even exactly correctly portrayed here), but for now this is it. I'm really not a fan of having to write a fixed form poem (i.e., having to comply with rhyming, structure, etc.), which is the main reason I didn't like writing this poem as much as the others I wrote, but I still did enjoy it -- it was something I hadn't done before, and I had to challenge myself.

Comments/etc. are welcome.

Project: Room Re-Organization. Complete.

Posted by Velox , in Life Oct 04 2012 · 208 views

So not sure if I've mentioned this before but I'm going to Community College for two years before transferring somewhere else so I can save money.

Point is, I realized that I really needed to reorganize my room to do homework and whatnot, as previously I didn't even have a desk in my room (my computer desk was in the Family Room, which is where I did everything). I also needed more bookshelves, a place to read, and decorations. So over the summer I moved that desk into my room, rearranged my bookshelves, got a loft bed instead of a bunk bed so I could use the space under it (and created a "Reading Corner"), actually decorated my walls since they were mostly bare before, etc.

The project has been done for a while mostly, but this past week I finally got the last thing I needed: a chair/ottoman for my "reading corner". (actually, I still need a new clip-on fan, because the one I have by my bed is broken, but that's nothing major)

So, without further ado, the room:

From the door:

"Classical Detective Novels" bookshelf, featuring my Sherlock Holmes collection (with Lego minifig!) on top as well as my collection of Agatha Christie, Ed Mcbain, and Dorothy Sayers, among a few others:

Back of door/closet door:

Bookshelf containing my small collection of Poetry, my Classics, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, and the beginning of my main book collection, as well as a few religious books and comic books on the bottom, with some SS collections on top:

Underneath the bed; Reading Corner, continuation of my main book collection:

Tall bookshelf with some religious things on top; end of book collection:

Dresser area, with a freehand-drawn PotC symbol done by my sister and Hobbit/LOTR showcase, prom picture, Les Mis poster (gonna put a movie poster right next to it when it comes out), etc.:

Desk area:

(also featuring an awesome drawing by Kakaru of Velox under a drawing of my brother and I like 10 years ago done on the streets of San Francisco)

And Gallery.

So there you have it: where I spend most of my time. I'm really quite happy with it. It's awesome having all my school stuff, my computer, and my desk in my room, and I absolutely love having my "Reading Corner" where I can just sit for hours and read, study, do homework, etc. And of course all of my posters, all of which (with the exception of the American one) were purchased over the summer.

What are you doing at 11am?

If the answer is not "having second breakfast" then unfortunately your answer is wrong. Join in!! Take part! In honor of the 75th anniversary of the publication of the Hobbit, people are dedicating 11am to a "second breakfast" to celebrate Hobbit-style!

Happy Tolkien Week, everyone! And enjoy that food!

5 Years

Posted by Velox , in Personal Writings, School Sep 20 2012 · 169 views

So today marks my 5-year BZ-anniversary. Forgot completely about it until I saw that I had an Olmak. Half a decade, wow. Lot of memories from this place. Many awesome people that I've met, and, most importantly, the beginning of my writing career. Thank you, BZPower.

And because I didn't write anything specifically for my anniversary, I'll just shamelessly plug my new poem again. =P COT literature always gets buried so quickly...Anyway, here's to many more half-decades on BZPower!

Oceans.
They stare at you
Through the wooden edges of the frame.
A snowy plane lines his cheeks, bushy and misshapen
Like a wild plant, growing this way and that,
Thinning here and there like his life.
Soon it will all be gone.
So will he...

Read the full poem here. Comments are greatly appreciated in the topic. =]

But yeah, I had fun with this one. I'm not much of a poem writer (though I want to be), and that's one of the reasons I took this Creative Writing class. It's "introduction to poetry and fiction writing" so I thought it would be a good way for me to start. And I have to say, I was really pleased with how it turned out. Obviously not perfect, but this is the first real poem I've written. I've written a few shorter, sucky ones, but otherwise this is about it. It's definitely my favorite class, and I look forward to writing more poems, now.

In Memoriam

9/11, We Remember and 2 more...

~ :: Posted Image :: ~

9/11 has always been one of my favorite days of the year. Not because I am necessarily happy, but because of the attitude and the respect that people show (hopefully) on this day. It's a day of remembrance, a day of prayer, a day of memory, a day of sadness, a day of reflection, a day of respect, a day of honor, a day of fervor, a day of comforting, a day of charity, a day of love. A day to remind us of what happened, to honor those who suffered and died that day. A day to remind us to honor those that work each and every day, even to the point of sometimes giving up their lives, in order to try and protect the United States of America. This day reminds us that we must show love. To the families, to the people, to those who fight for freedom, to politicians who work to keep us safe even when we might disagree with them on other things, to those who give their lives, to those who cannot be with us today, to the people of the United States of America, and to the people of the world. Today is a day of love. It is also a day of remembrance, sadness, but also of hope and strength. Hope that a tragedy like this will never happen again. Strength that we are resolved, that nothing will break our spirit.

I'd like to thank everyone that has posted about this day, on BZPower or otherwise. I'd like to thank those that have said a prayer today in honor and remembrance of this. I believe this is one of the most important days of the year, because it is a day to remind us. Remind us of love, of those lost, of those fighting, of simply everyone. To remind us that peace is what we all need to strive for. I have seen many beautiful posts about today, and it honestly warms my heart to see that people care as I do. I'd like to end by sharing one of my favorite posts I have seen today:

Karen and I wanted to take a moment to honor those who lost their lives and whose lives were changed forever on September 11, 2001.  We were all changed that day, but there are many who gave so much - many who paid the ultimate price - fighting for freedom on that day and the days that followed.  We honor them today.

Eleven years later, we still vividly remember the heroism and courage of those who fought back against the terrorists.  That day was a dark day for our country, but demonstrated what is great about America: Nothing can break the spirit of our great country.

Today we honor those who sacrificed on the planes, in the World Trade Center towers, in the Pentagon, on a field in Pennsylvania, our intelligence communities, and of course, the men and women in uniform who fight for our freedoms.

We will never forget.

-Rick Santorum

Please remember. Please do not forget. And may God Bless America.

~ Andrew
