Hero Factory

Posted by TNTOS , Feb 20 2010 · 7 views
General Toys
Now that we've got some official Toy Fair photos of the Hero Factory sets, I've decided to give my general opinion on the line so far:

Heroes: I have to say that I think the Heroes themselves look pretty nice. I like their colors, mostly, and they look like they have cool weapons. I might pick up Blaze or Surge sometime, depending on whether I have the money or not. Like their helmets and weapons quite a bit as well, though I wish their arms had a bit more armor on them.

Villains: The four villain sets look really . . . meh, IMO, when compared to the Heroes characters. I've seen closer pictures of them than the ones BZP has already provided and I have decided that I won't be picking up any of them, at least at the moment.

Their proportions are my major complaint. With BIONICLE, I have always either liked or ignored the inhuman proportions used on the sets. But the HF villains just look very bad, from what I've seen, and not in a good way. I suppose their proportions are justified, since they don't seem to be humans, but I still dislike them. I admit, however, that the silver and black one (not sure what his name is) looks cool.

Titans/Vehicles: Not sure here. I haven't seen a whole lot of good pictures for these guys, but I'll say that right now I am preferring the vehicles over the titans, though the titans ain't half bad from what I can tell. May pick one up if they aren't too expensive and if I happen to have the money. The motorcycle in particular looks very nice.

Overall, I'd say I'm pretty happy with Hero Factory so far. The vehicles, titans, and Heroes look pretty nice, but the villains are meh. I'm glad to see that the sets have a very distinctive style from BIONICLE, yet at the same time, you can easily tell that they use a similar building platform. My opinion is always subject to change, once the sets actually come out and we see better pictures and stuff, but for now I am fairly positive about HF and look forward to summer, when the sets will be released.

Glatorian Chronicles #6: New Beginnings Posted!

Glatorian Chronicles
Just posted the sixth GC today in the Short Stories forum. So go read it tongue.gif .

Don't expect the seventh GC for a while, however, since I have begun editing AUA, which will take sometime considering its length. I'm still happy with it overall, though.

An Unlikely Alliance . . .

Posted by TNTOS , Feb 12 2010 · 10 views
Shika Trilogy
. . . is, as of last night, finished, at just a little over 100,000 words, making it the longest epic in the Shika Trilogy, with 28 chapters and an epilogue to boot. To celebrate, I drank a bottle of Gatorade. Yay!

Unlike the last two drafts, I am very happy with this one, since it came out quite well in my opinion. But like all first drafts (or third, in this case? whatever) it will need some editing. Heck, I can already think of some parts that will need to go or be edited heavily. It's pretty good right now, IMO, but it still needs some work. All I can say about the story itself right now without spoiling too much is that it is quite dark compared to the last two and deals with trust, unity, that sort of thing, between those who hated each other and now have to work together to survive. It's not extremely dark, but still quite a bit darker than the last two.

However, I am putting off editing for now to work on the sixth Glatorian Chronicles story, which will star Branar, as I have mentioned before. This is mostly to distance myself from the story so I can edit it more efficiently later on, plus I've been wanting to write this short story for a while now. After that, though, I will officially begin editing AUA at least two, possibly three times, depending on how satisfied I become with it when I finish editing it twice.

So, having been writing and rewriting AUA since July of last year, I am extremely happy to have finished the writing stage at last. Feel pretty happy with myself right now.

BTW, the sixth GC wil be called New Beginnings, not Escaping the Silent Death or Final Confrontation or whatever I said it was earlier. I changed the name primarily because it fits the new story much better than the last two, mostly because of how the ending is. Also, I'll probably be getting NB up sometime this week, so keep your eyes on the Short Stories forum for the sixth GC smile.gif .

Odd / Cool Coincidence

Posted by TNTOS , Feb 11 2010 · 11 views
Shika Trilogy
Not sure if I've mentioned this before, but in my trilogy of fanfics, which I call the Shika Trilogy, one of the Toa is called Barilo, and he is a Toa of Gravity. I made him and his name sometime in early 2008, if I remember correctly, well-before we ever learned that "Ba" was the prefix for Matoran of Gravity in the official BIONICLE canon.

See the similarities? Barilo is a Toa of Gravity, meaning he used to be a Ba-Matoran, and the first two letters in his name are the Matoran of Gravity prefix. I didn't intend that; somehow I ended up picking the perfect name for a Toa of Gravity who had once been a Ba-Matoran before we even knew that Gravity Matoran would be given a prefix. Weird, but very cool. It reminds me of how the Toa Nuva's names all start with the prefixes of their elements (Tahu, "Ta," Gali, "Ga," Lewa, "Le," etc) except I had no idea that "Ba" would be used as the prefix for Matoran of Gravity at the time I was planning my epics.

Like I said, I think I've mentioned this before (could be wrong, but whatever), but it's still cool nonetheless IMO.

Shika Trilogy
This blog entry will display the technical data for all of the chapters for the first two epics in the Shike Trilogy, The Tales of Shika Nui and Tapestry of Evil. That pretty much means I will show how many words there are per chapter for both epics and an overall word count the epic as a whole.

Chapter 21: 5161

Chapter 22: 4683

Chapter 23: 7899

Epilogue: 881

Overall: 88981

Mostly posting this for fun. Will update this in the future after posting An Unlikely Alliance, which I can confirm will actually be longer than the last two epics.

Please note that these are what Microsoft Word says the length for each chapter is. It is possible that it may be off by a few hundred words or so, so take this as an approximation rather than a definite number, as I bet other word processors may say differently, though I don't know since I don't have any others with word counting features like Word.

On Kinetics & Psionics

Posted by TNTOS , Feb 02 2010 · 6 views
BIONICLE
I don't care either way whether it becomes an elemental power or not. Not that I would hate it if it did, but I simply just could care less if it did.

So in other words, I feel rather apathetic towards the power as a whole and don't care if it is canonized. Actually, I think I remember Greg's recent post in the poll saying that it will not be a Toa element but could be a mask power or something instead, so perhaps me stating my opinion on this is pointless.

In that case, in order to make this entry not seem as pointless, I would like to say that I think Psionics is an awesome canon element and I will have a Toa of Psionics appear in Dimension Hoppers once I get around to writing that. Got an idea on what role she could play, though I don't imagine her playing an extremely large one throughout it IMO, based on some of my plans, though of course nothing is set in stone.

Birth By Sleep . . .

and 1 more...
Oh how I wish Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep was out in America now. I also wish I had a PSP to go along with it, but that's beside the point. I suppose listening to "Simple and Clean" while writing isn't helping me get any more patient, heh.

And yes, I am quite aware that it is out in Japan at the moment and that spoilers are probably all over the Internet by now. But I have chosen to ignore them; I don't want to spoil this game for me because I plan to buy it along with a PSP whenever it comes out in the US, which I have heard is May 18th, but that's just a rumor.

Closing this entry just to make sure that no one posts any BBS spoilers, either.

Tahu!

BIONICLE
My Dad brought him the Tahu Stars set for me today.

It's awesome, purely for the nostalgia factor. The gold mask alone is nearly worth it for me IMO. Really good set, though I suppose it isn't the absolute best set. Still, I'd say it's definitely a worthy representation of Tahu and a good final red set for BIONICLE, though I can see why some people may not like him much (silver hand guard? What?).

I'm very happy with it smile.gif .

Change Of Plans

Posted by TNTOS , Jan 20 2010 · 10 views
Glatorian Chronicles
I've decided to change the plot of the sixth Glatorian Chronicles, currently titled Escaping the Silent Death. While Branar will still be the main character and primary viewpoint character, I think instead I will have the story take place after the events of TLR and focus on what he did after the movie. Will probably have him encounter the battera, though no plans are set in stone at the moment.

Also, AUA is coming along fairly well. Nowhere near completion yet, of course, but it's coming steadily along, and I have to say that I am much more pleased with how this draft is turning out than the last two. I think it will be the darkest of the Shika Trilogy, though, but that's not necessarilly a bad thing.

I've decided to continue the GC series after the sixth one. The seventh one will feature Ackar as the main viewpoint character and will take place during the Core War. I cannot give any other details just yet, however; don't want to spoil it all at once, now do I?

But based on the summary I have written for it, I think it will be pretty fun to write and could become a short epic similar to The Fallen Warrior, though I can't say for sure at the moment.

The Project

Posted by TNTOS , Jan 07 2010 · 22 views
Shika Trilogy
Hello, my fellow BZPers and bloggers. Today I'd like to post some plans and information on a fanfic crossover that Tahu: Spirit of the Mist and I were planning on writing but just recently scrapped for reasons that we will go into below. With permission from Tahu I am now going to post what little we had planned and why we are not going to be working on it anymore:

"The Project," as I later dubbed it, was first proposed to me by Tahu: Spirit of the Mist on September 28, 2009. His basic premise was the characters from my fanfic series, the Shika Trilogy, would meet the characters from his own epic, The Mask of Dimensional Gates. I agreed to it and we began planning as soon as possible. We decided that we would write it sometime later on, since we were a bit busy with our other writing projects at the moment, but we were determined to write it just the same.

However, due to my later lack of interest in the Project and Tahu's own decling interest in BIONICLE itself we dropped the Project a few days ago. We will not write it, nor will we do any planning on it in the future. It's a bit of a shame, really, but for reasons mentioned above there was no reason to continue planning. So now I will reveal some actual plot information on it, with a summary provided by Tahu:

QUOTE(proposed plot for the Project)
Toa are mostly scarce within the universe.

Xhin dispatches the Toa Naram (Jaagand, Jualsan, Nolka, Bahlka, Kerah, and Tavra) on a mission in the jungle south of Coryuga, for there had been a lot of strange things happening there. So they go there, where they find a pool of purplish liquid. The pool is glowing from the bottom. Nolka uses her Elda in order to find out what the glow is, but finds nothing but a light. So, the Toa leave it alone. They try to go around it. However, before they can, it erupts, grabs them, and pulls them under.

Just as they go underneath the surface, they find themselves in a small Matoran village. Strangely, many of the village huts have been set aflame, with many villagers fleeing. They enter the village, weapons drawn, and find 5 Toa (the Shika) fighting two beings. The Shika successfully fight the beings off, and then Addis sees the Naram, the latter of whom are all wearing cloaks. The Toa Shika then mistake the Naram as being evil. However, they are corrected, and Jaagand decides to ask who the two beings were. Addis replies saying that they were "just about the world's biggest problem: Drighkens."

It was myself who gave an explanation for how the Toa Naram and Toa Shika could meet without contradicting either of our stories, considering the very different situations our characters were currently in:

The Project would have taken place in an entirely separate continuity from the Shika Trilogy and The Mask of Dimensional Gates, but would have shared the same characters from both universes. That way, the Toa Naram could have met the Toa Shika without having to go into a lengthy explanation as to how this is possible, and vice versa. Solves a lot of plot issues with both of our epics very easily IMO.

Some information on what the Drighkens, the primary antagonists of the Project, are, courtesy of their creator, Tahu: Spirit of the Mist, as well as some other information regarding the Project's plot:

QUOTE
"Drighken" was the name of the Toa Karda of Ice in one of my old stories. He had turned evil, gone through many different mutations, and then, after a while, he became good again. He was the ruler of Tahyungusta, and even killed one of his teammates (Kerahn, whose name was then spelled "K-e-r-a-n").

In this universe, Drighkens are are the Tahyungustans who worshipped Drighken, the Toa. After a while, they became a tribe of primitive, thin and tall humanoids who have long, slender heads, and carry crude blades and spears as weaponry. However, despite their poor tools, they know how to use them so that even someone like Brutaka wouldn't be able to beat them. They where black plating, and have beady, yellow eyes beneath the small eyeholes of their helmets. They speak Matoran very poorly, but they excel like no other at the language Drighken himself used.

As for the Toas' cloaks--They were given them by Xhin, yes, in order to be more easily camouflaged in the jungle.

As for Nonzra's death--You stole the words right out of my mouth. He was killed by the Drighkens.

We never got around to giving the Project a proper name because at the time we couldn't think of a good title for it, so we went with the placeholder - and now, I suppose, official name for it - the Project. I did suggest that the title could be "Star Protectors," but since that was at the point where we had no plot we scrapped it and eventually ended up with the Project. I am sure, if we had continued, we would have given it a proper title, but since we have scrapped the idea it will simply be known as the Project.

Our basic idea on actually writing it was that we would have alternatively written chapters and post them on a weekly basis. For example, I would write Chapter 1, then Tahu would write Chapter 2, I do Chapter 3, etc. That way we would both have gotten a chance to write it equally and we would be sure to avoid continuity issues by sending each other the latest chapter via PM so we can edit or write off it. Tahu did suggest that we could do two separate epics, but we went with the idea of one epic with two authors instead.

We really didn't plan a whole lot, which was probably for the best, since we eventually scrapped it anyway. I'm glad we didn't start it and then abandon it, because I hate writing unfinished stories unless I have to work on something else first, so that's one good thing to come out of it.

Discuss, ask questions, give cookies and hugs, etc. in the comments below if you wish tongue.gif .

What To Possibly Expect From Me In 2010

Posted by TNTOS , Jan 01 2010 · 4 views
BZPower
This is mostly a list of what fanfics I will be writing and posting this year on BZP, just to give people a heads up in case anyone's interested:

-An Unlikely Alliance will likely be posted in April or May 2010, possibly sooner depending on how editing goes
-The sixth Glatorian Chronicles story, Escaping the Silent Death, will also be edited and posted on here at some point in the future, probably in March or April, though don't get too excited, since AUA is taking up most of my writing time at the moment
-Possible contiunation of the Glatorian Chronicles, this time focusing one of the Glatorian Legends characters. The first will probably focus on Ackar or Kiina, though Vastus is also a possibility (he was never fleshed out in the story much, which is why I have given him the nickname, "The Unloved Glatorian" XD)
-Dimension Hoppers will likely be written and posted later on in summer, perhaps, if everything goes according to plan
-Will write a few short stories between AUA and DiH, I think, so I can transition between them easier
-Also have another, yet-to-be announced Yu-Gi-Oh! fanfic idea that I really like. Will most definitely write it, possibly for NaNoWriMo 2010, and will probably post it on BZP, too, in the CoT forum. For now, though, I'm not going to reveal too much about it until I've finished the basic stages of planning

So 2010 looks like it will be a busy year for me, fanfic-wise. All I really hope is that the summer won't be as hot as last year's and I think I'll be able to make it tongue.gif .

I have changed my name from "TNTOS" to "Freed the Matchless General," based off the YGO Monster card of the same name.

Unfortunately, the name has came out as "Freed the Matchless Genera," without the "L." Guess it was too long. Maybe I should ask an administrator or someone to shorten it to something like "Freed" for me, although I am not sure if that is possible. If it is, please tell me, because I don't want to be known as "Freed the Matchless Genera" for 45 days.

What I Got For Christmas Yesterday

Posted by TNTOS , Dec 26 2009 · 6 views

Yesterday was great. Had some great food, the weather was actually pretty nice, and the presents were good. Overall I'd say I liked this Christmas better than last year's, though I did get the first two Harry Potter books that Christmas, so whatever.

Anyway, I got:

-Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Warriors' Strike Structure Deck (Dark Valkyria, Marauding Captain, and Freed the Matchless General, anyone?)
-Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Spellcaster's Command Structure Deck (Breaker the Magical Warrior and Enemy Controller are win IMO)
-Yu-Gi-Oh! Spellcaster's Judgment Structure Deck (Another Breaker for me!)
-Half of the Duelist Pack: Yusei Fudo booster box (I never realized just how useful Synchro Monsters could be until my older brother totally owned me in a duel using Stardust Dragon) (Side note: said older brother also got the other half of the booster box, since we were sharing it)
-A couple of singles (Warrior of Atlantis will fit perfectly in my Water Deck)

Didn't get any BIONICLE sets this year, but I do plan to pick up Tahu, Takanuva, and Gresh Stars after Christmas, if we go to Wal-Mart sometime.

Creating Characters

Posted by TNTOS , Dec 22 2009 · 14 views
Writing
This entry's going to be a bit personal. A lot of the techniques I use here when designing characters' personalities are mostly my own and might not work for everybody, but that's okay. I just wanted to post how I do it. Nobody has to agree with me, and I don't expect them to.

Now onto the entry itslf:

Whenever I start a story, I need to know who the protagonist(s) are going to be. I have to, even if I only have the bare bones of the plot itself. Really, I don't even need to know how the characters themselves look; so long as I know some of their basic personality traits and quirks I'll be happy and will be able to continue on with the story. Characters are the most important part of any story for me, whether it be a novel, short story, fanfic, script, or anything else. If I don't have the characters, I generally don't have the story since they are what drive it (particularly if it the story in question happens to be in first-person, in which knowing at least who the main viewpoint character is is absolutely essential IMO).

When I start, say, a fantasy story, I don't immediately think, "Okay, I'll need the Knight in Shining Armor (or Heroic Mage, whatever you prefer) to figh the Dark Lord in order to retrieve the (insert name of quest object here), which will allow him to save the (princess/kingdom/world/universe/whatever)." I don't do this because it doesn't really allow me to write unique and interesting characters and it is just plain uncreative, too, since I don't like using cliches of any kind unless absolutely necessary. Perhaps you could sum up a story of mine like that (though I haven't ever written a story even remotely similar to that before), but I don't simply make a character a knight (or we could say "Toa" here, if you want) and leave him at that. Back in my old day I probably did that, but not anymore. I like to find out as much as I can about a character before writing him or her, generally during the writing process itself.

You see, if all I did was think of my characters in terms of archtypes (like the Wise Old Mentor, for example) then they will never grow and become their own independent entities. They would become uninteresting cardboard cut-outs solely there to drive the plot, and I hate writing like that. It is disrespectful to the characters and makes it harder for me to write, since I never work well with outlines of any kind. Forcing my characters to do what I want, rather than what they want, is unnatural for me and just doesn't work.

But back to the main point: When I start a story, I think of characters in what the story needs, not what I need. If I make a Wise Old Mentor, is it because I actually need him for the story or because I think that all stories I write should have a character like him with little-to-no variation, even though he has little purpose to the plot itself? It isn't so much the archetype itself that bothers me but the fact that if I wrote a Wise Old Mentor character and kept him like that forever that the story would probably be a lot less interesting than if I let him naturally change in his own way during the course of the story.

True, I may create a character based off an archetype sometimes, but they rarely ever stay that way. They will usually evolve and grow, during both the planning and writing process. That is very good, because if your character manages to actually change and become his or her own character during the course of the story it means you've written a well-devleoped character, at least in my opinion.

Part of the reason outlines never work with me is because I have little control over my characters' actions and I hate having to change what they would do in order for what the plot should be. Outlines may work for some people, but they don't for me. I prefer having my characters tell me the story, rather than me telling them the story. Just feels phony if I have to force them to go here or do this when they really want to go here or do this instead, and they are often far more right than I am.

Doesn't mean I simply let them do anything they want, though. Sometimes, if I think they are deviating too far from the main plot or are in a pointless subplot that doesn't compliment the main plot in some way I will steer them back onto the main plot. This has happened to me a few times, where my characters have gone and done something that is so boring or pointless to the plot that I have to go and rewrite it into a more interesting, worthwhile scene instead. Still, I think following my characters and letting them do their own things is generally for the best.

In closing, when I make characters, I start off with a few simply traits and build from there, while allowing the characters to grow and change beyond whatever traits I may have given them. I never let them stay archetypes (if I have based them off archtypes in the first place) and always allow them to grow and become who they want to be. Sometimes, if they are in a boring subplot, I may have to gently point them back in the right direction, but generally they do a pretty good job of their own figuring out where they want to go, plotwise. I find that way works best, at least for me.

Finished! Finally!

Writing
As of tonight I have finished my NaNoWriMo novel, Two Worlds. Though I did reach the 50k mark last month, the novel itself hadn't actually been finished, but I did finish it tonight at 90,591 words. Hooray!

However, I am putting it aside for now to begin work on An Unlike Alliance's third (and hopefully final) draft. With TW out of the way I can put all of my energy on AUA. I expect it'll be up by summer 2010 at the latest, possibly spring at the earliest depending on how fast I get through the editing.

Time to celebrate and stuff tongue.gif .

Holy Plot Holes, Batman! ( Smallish Rant )

Posted by TNTOS , Dec 12 2009 · 13 views
Shika Trilogy
Currently I am writing a rather in-depth summary of my first epic, The Tales of Shika Nui, for the BZP Epics Wiki, created by Toa Spirit. Because of this, I am having to reread TToSN to make sure that the summary is as accurate as possible.

And man, I just realized that the epic itself has tons of plot holes! I know I was not as good a writer as I am now and that no one is really good in the beginning unless they're born with the gift, but it is very hard to make the summary sound good when I find that the characters act extremely stupid and sometimes out of character just for the plot to advance (something I try best to avoid in all of my writings).

I mean, it seemed as though I couldn't decide if this one Dark Hunter's name was Viho or Yhio, both of which sound far too similar to the name of another Hunter, Giho. That is quite minor compared to some of the other things I've found, but it should give you an idea of what I've seen while rereading it. I even discovered an unintentional fragmented sentence in the narration itself, even! Easily fixed, fortunately, but I still cringe for after reading each sentence. Was I really that bad? Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating, but it really isn't all that good compared to what I write now, at least.

On the plus side, rereading it has given me loads more plot threads to resolve in AUA that I had forgotten about, which is part of the reason I am rewriting it again, as the first two drafts didn't answer any of those questions or plot points. So there's a bright side to everything, I suppose.
