What Could Have Been: Tapestry Of Evil

Posted by TNTOS , Dec 03 2009 · 7 views
Shika Trilogy
This blong entry will contain old ideas about my most recent epic, Tapestry of Evil, which has just had the epilogue posted recently. Here I will detail as many abandoned ideas, concepts, and plot ideas that I had for ToE but were ultimately scrapped in the final draft.

If you want to read the one I did for my first epic, The Tales of Shika Nui, please click here: Link.

Also, please note that this will contain major spoilers for ToE and if you haven't read it yet I suggest not to read this blog entry, for it will spoil many crucial plot points and also possibly the ending as well. Read at your own risk:

-Originally, the Toa Shika were supposed to stage a raid on Castle Kra to save Nastan (forgot how they knew he was there in the first place) but would have been too late, for Nastan would have already been taken by Jero to the Place of Lightlessness where he would have been transformed into a Toa of Shadow and then clashed with the other Toa Shika on the side of the Shodios many times during the story itself

-Nastan's transformation back to normal was also changed in the final draft. I originally planned for Nastan to be turned back to normal by Nonzra during the final battle, who would have hit him with a sonic blast that would have destroyed the mental barrier keeping light from returning to Nastan, similar to what the klakk did to the Shadow Matoran and Takanuva in 2008. But I scrapped the idea because I felt that Nonzra probably wouldn't know how to do that, even accidentally, and it would just too Deus Ex Machina (IMO) for Nastan to be turned back to normal right at the end like that.

-Wanderer probably went through more changes than any other character in this epic. Wanderer was originally male and not as sarcastic as I wrote her. She was much more reserved and mysterious, but when I rewrote ToE after the Dataclysm I just couldn't write her that way anymore. So I changed her to a female and her new personality emerged, which was a lot more fun to write than the previous one.

-Wanderer was pretty much always going to be the one to turn Nastan back to normal after I scrapped the idea of Nonzra doing it. However, in the first draft her appearance was much more abrupt and too Deus Ex Machina-ish for my liking. So I introduced her a few chapters earlier in the final draft so that she wouldn't come across as a huge Deus Ex Machina to my readers. In short, Wanderer was going to be pretty much a plot device than a character, something that would have been disrespectful to her as a character, which is probably the main reason I changed her.

-Teivel's ability to come back from the dead was something I added in the final draft because . . . well, I'm not sure why I added it, but he originally did not have it and was supposed to die when the Nui Mountains erupted. I suppose it was just something that happened as I wrote it, since I don't outline and let things naturally (and logically) develop as the story progresses.

-Teivel himself was also supposed to be different. Instead of actually being a Graalo, I was going to reveal that he was a Great Being trapped inside the body of a Toa. An evil Great Being of darkness, that is. However I abandoned the idea because 1) it doesn't make sense, and 2) I don't know how or why Mata Nui would put the spirit of a Great Being inside Teivel. It sounds cool at first, but when you think about it, it really doesn't make a lick of sense no matter what explanation you give it.

-Teivel's death scene was something I changed during the editing process. Originally he was just supposed to abruptly die when he realized that since his body hadn't been destroyed he could not come back to life and that was that. I changed it because I felt the abrupt death didn't fit Teivel's character. It would make much more sense for his soul to try to make it past The Door, I reasoned, rather than simply give up like that, so I changed it. I like this better than the previous version, personally.

-I admit I handled the whole Graalo thing rather sloppishly in my opinion. When I first wrote the scene where the mysterious cloaked figure in Barilo's dream showed him the Graalo and told him that "the Graalo is closer than you think" I was not thinking of Teivel when I wrote it and only when I reached the final battle did I actually remember the line and decide Teivel was the Graalo (literally, in this case). If there's one thing I could have gone back and change it would be that, make it less literal and more symbolic.

-Originally, the fight at The Door to the Light was supposed to be the Toa Shika VS the Shodios and nothing more. However, when I was rewriting ToE I realized that the Shodios probably learned not to underestimate their opponents by now and would have brough along more allies. So I decided to make them bring along a lot of Matoran and Turaga Krashadi himself, too, which makes a lot more sense once you think about it. Plus also subverts villain stupidity, too.

-Initially I never knew why the Shodios allowed Krashadi to rule Wyoko when they themselves were so much stronger than them. So I gave him the ability to become a giant ball of shadow that destroyed everything in its path, which would be enough to convince the Shodios not to question his rule. I can't say why in-story Krashadi has the ability and don't know if I will ever address it, though it's possible he learned it on his own, or was given it by Mata Nui for an unknown reason.

-Though never explicitly stated in the fic itself, besides Tikcah being in love with Teivel, I have always thought that Rhatara and Ira might like each other as well, though I doubt their feelings for each other were on the same level as the feelings Tikcah felt for Teivel, which explained why there was never much hints between them in-story.

-The Shodios' shadow travel ability was something that I also wished I could have handled better, for I think I added in without thinking too much about it. One question I don't think the story answered was, "If the Shodios could travel by shadow, why didn't they use it to escape Wyoko?" I never thought about it and none of the Shodios ever attempted it, so it kind of left a plot hole big enough to stick your foot into.

-The whole "Door being charged with light" thing was something I added during the editing process to prevent Teivel from escaping. On retrospect I think this was a bad idea because it caused me to unnaturally change the story to suit my needs and not its own. I should have let Teivel escape, which would have opened another plotline entirely for the next epic, An Unlikely Alliance.

The main reason I posted this was to give my readers an idea on how the story changes from its earliest beginnings to the final product. I myself always enjoy reading WCHB ("what could have beens") because they almost always give insights to the writing process and sometimes make the actual story itself more rewarding and interesting to read or watch, in the case of TV and movies.

After I post AUA, I will probably do one for it, too, since there are already plenty of "what could have beens" for that epic even though I haven't posted it yet.

Cool Typing Test Website

Check this website out.

Found a link to it on another website yesterday. It tells you how many words you can type in a minute, though the disclaimer at the bottom says that it is not perfect and will only give you a clue as to where you are, speedwise. Still fun and slightly addicting to do, though. Almost like a game, really.

My personal best is 87 a minute without missing a single word. Of course, that doesn't mean I always write 87 words minute, since I don't usually type that fast during any other typing activities. Still, it's nice to know how fast I can go when I'm aiming for quantity over quality, though.

Final Tuesday T O E Update

Posted by TNTOS , Dec 01 2009 · 9 views
Shika Trilogy
I posted the epilogue for Tapestry of Evil today, officially ending the epic and tying it into the next one. No, I will not surmise it like I did with past chapters. You go read it if you want to know what happens tongue.gif .

Well, ToE was fun to write and I had a great time talking with my readers in the review topic. It's going to feel weird now that I won't have Tuesday ToE Updates anymore, and it will also feel weird not to be able to post a new chapter every week, too. And I was just getting used to watching the table of contents grow chapter by chapter, too. For some reason it always made me proud, though I don't know why.

Later on this week (or sometime this month, at least) I think I'll do a "What Could Have Been" for ToE, like the one that I did for TToSN a while back, which will feature some of the original ideas for characters, plot points, and other things that ultimately changed in the final draft. So that's one more thing for ToE that I have to do, at least. Yay and stuff tongue.gif .

Also, expect An Unlikely Alliance, the final epic in the Shika Trilogy, to premiere sometime in spring 2010, summer at the latest. As I have explained in past entries, I am going to rewrite AUA one last time and then edit it two times before I begin posting it, which will be on a weekly schedule like ToE. I'm going to begin work on it when I finish my NaNoWriMo novel, which despite hitting 50k is not yet finished, though I hope to get it finished by the end of this month, and after that I will devote all of my writing time to writing AUA's third and final draft. I am sorry that AUA will take a while to get up, but I want to make sure that it is the best I can make it, as I haven't been happy with the last two drafts. Quality over quantity is my motto, even during NaNoWriMo lol. Besides, I don't have a deadline or anything to meet, so I have no obligation to finish it extremely fast. But I will try to get it up as soon as reasonably is possible for my readers smile.gif .

Now That Bionicle Is Over . . .

Posted by TNTOS , Nov 29 2009 · 12 views
BIONICLE
Here are some BIONICLE-relate things that I want to get now that I don't have to worry about new sets constantly being released:

-All of the graphic novels that I am missing
-Half of the Stars
-Axalara T9
-Toa Matau Metru
-Jaller & Gukko
-Tahnok-Kal or Lehvak-Kal (just because I never got one of the Kal and I want to own at least one)
-Get a Bohrok Va, preferably Tahnok Va or Lehvak Va (same reason as the Kal above)

Most of these are sets that I've missed in the past nine years that I've always wanted. I don't know about some of these sets (especially J & G or the Kal), but I'm going to try my best anyway, just to complete my personal collection of sets.

Bionicle's End

Posted by TNTOS , Nov 25 2009 · 14 views
BIONICLE
Let me just say that I do not think that LEGO "ruined" my childhood or my life by cancelling the line (or at least the sets, anyway). True, BIONICLE has played a large part in my life, but just because its gone doesn't mean LEGO is evil or cruel or sadistic, as many people seem to be implying (and in some cases, outright saying) in the talkback thread for the announcement.

I will miss BIONICLE. I will. BIONICLE is, without a doubt, my favorite toyline ever, and has remained my favorite even throughout the years. I have many sets and quite a few books, nearly all of the comics, too. I also have all four of the movies and have read all of the webserials. I have spent a lot of money on BIONICLE in the past and I don't think most of it was a waste. I may not have liked all of the sets, or all of the story decisions, but I have kept a positive attitude regarding BIONICLE changes through the years that I haven't given up and probably never will (I prefer positivity to negativity, personally).

So what will I do now that BIONICLE is ending?

Well, I'll continue following the story, since it will continue on to at least 2011. I have almost always been a storyline geek, so this is great for me. I agree with Greg that the story will probably take a turn for the better now, since he doesn't have to try to advertize each and every set LEGO asks him to anymore, since there won't be any sets to sell! I eagerly await to see what Greg comes up in the future. It will surely be great, though I will try, as I always do, to keep my expectations low, just so I won't be disappointed.

I will also continue writing fanfiction. Why not? I still have dozens of ideas to write. There's the Shika Trilogy, the Glatorian Chronicles (which will be expanded to includ the Glatorian Legends characters, such as Ackar and Kiina, later on), Dimension Hoppers, a Bara Magna epic featuring Mata Nui's journey to the Valley of the Maze (not sure of a title for that yet), and many, many other ideas that will come to me in the future that I have yet to think up now.

And I actually see this as a positive sign, BIONICLE's ending. For one, my money can go towards other things without me worrying about missing the newest sets. Plus, I will also have more time, I think, to focus on my original fiction. I still haven't finished world building, even though I am already writing it for NaNoWriMo.

All in all, I think BIONICLE had good run and I eagerly await the new summer 2010 line that will replace it. I don't know whether it will be as good as BIONICLE, but I am willing to give it a chance. After all, back in 2001 BIONICLE was a brand new, totally original line that veered sharply away from the normal LEGO System and surely should have failed. Yet we accepted it, despite the fact that it was extremely different from the norm. So why can't we do the same thing with the new 2010 line, or heck, maybe even the Ben 10 line?

It's true that we haven't seen the new 2010 sets yet, but like with BIONICLE in the past we shouldn't necessarily write them off as "BIONICLE ripoffs" or whatever people might call them or even be calling them now. At least I won't. Not yet, anyway. I'm being positive and openminded here and I await the future. That's all I can do, really.

I did it! I finished NaNoWriMo a few minutes ago, reaching 51k as of tonight. Yay and stuff tongue.gif .

However, the story itself is far from finished and I will likely be working on it well into December, which means I won't be working on AUA for a while longer. Personally I felt that NaNoWriMo was a fresh change from having to work on my fanfics, though I eagerly look forward to getting back to working with the Toa Shika and related characters again smile.gif .

Tuesday T O E Update

Posted by TNTOS , Nov 24 2009 · 7 views
Shika Trilogy
I posted the final chapter of Tapestry of Evil today, titled "Chapter 23: A Destint Fufilled; a Life Lost."

In this chapter, the Toa Shika and Shodios have their final confrontation at The Door to the Light itself. If the Toa Shika win, then they will leave Wyoko behind forever and lock the evil Shodios away for eternity, where they will never be able to hurt anyone ever again. But if the Shodios win, then the universe itself may fall to the might of their armies.

This is the final battle - and there is no guarantee that all of the Toa Shika will make it out of Wyoko alive after this battle.

Andd there is still the epilogue that I have yet to post, so ToE technically isn't over just yet. I will post it next week, on Tuesday, as I always do, and it will connect ToE to the next and final epic, An Unlikely Alliance. So stay tuned!

Shika Trilogy
Posted Chapter 22: Going Down the River of Shadow today.

In this chapter, the Toa Shika, on their way to The Door, are attacked by a giant squid and have to fight for their lives or else get dragged down into the endless darkness of the river of shadows. Meanwhile, the remaining Shodios, several Kra-Matoran, and Turaga Krashadi himself await at the Forest of Shadow, which is at the foot of The Door to the Light. Here they plan to ambush the Toa Shika and get rid of them once and for all.

And with that, we have one more chapter and the epilogue to go before the epic climax of Tapestry of Evil. I'm very excited for this, and I hope my readers are, too smile.gif .

Stars

Posted by TNTOS , Nov 14 2009 · 10 views
BIONICLE
So Toaraga lives in Texas, and he found the Piraka and Rahkshi Stars sets in a Toys 'R' Us in Texas.

I also live in Texas (though not near any Toys 'R' Uses). Which means that next time I go to Wal-Mart, I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for any of the Stars (particularly Tahu or Takanuva).

Of course, if Wal-Mart doesn't have the Stars yet - which is a distinct possibility, seeing as the Wal-Marts around me don't usually get their shipment of new BIONICLE sets in until a few months or so after their official release date - then I may have to wait until early next year to bag me a Star.

Either way, depending on the Wal-Mart I go to - I win tongue.gif .

So yeah. Like I said above, I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for any Stars next time I go to Wal-Mart (when that will be I don't know, though I strongly suspect it will be after Christmas).

Shika Trilogy
Just posted Chapter 21: The River of Shadow today. With that, we only have two more chapters and the epilogue to go before the grand finale of Tapestry of Evil (which, coincidentally, will be on the first of December, which I find to be slightly interesting)!

In this chapter, the Shodios return to Castle Kra to inform Turaga Krashadi of the recent deaths of Teivel and Jiki and to plan their next action, while the Toa Shika discover an old, abandoned boat on a river of shadow that Addis thinks will take them to the Door to the Light and after that, hopefully toward home.

Short entry, but I don't have much else to add except that I actually will be rewriting AUA one more time before I begin editing it again, so even when ToE is finished don't expect to see AUA for some time, possibly not even until early or middle 2010. But I will try to get it up as soon as possible.

Conflicting Impulses

Posted by TNTOS , Nov 07 2009 · 20 views
Writing
As the title suggests, I have two conflicting impulses regarding my fanfiction that just won't settle their differences and become friends:

On one hand, whenever I post a new fanfic I almost always crave reviews. Good reviews, bad reviews, constructive criticism . . .  whatever anyone has to offer. So I advertize it in my sig, in my blog, doing whatever I can to make sure that everyone and their dog knows about it. Well, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but I do expect people to read my stuff and reply, though I never ask or force anyone to make any reviews unless they state in their sig that they take requests.

Yet on the other hand, I am frightend of what other people will say about my work. While I am reasonably confident that my fics are fairly well-written, I can't say for sure unless someone tell me so, and I'm probably not a very good judge of my own quality as a writer is often blinded by his own biased eye and will therefore be unable to find much problems with his work unless he's editing/revising.

Sure, most of the replies that I do get are usually quite positive, but I still get this paranoia going on and my mind starts to ask questions like, "What if this character is too bland or annoying or underdeveloped?" Or "What if I wrote something that will offend people?" And "What if the plot doesn't make sense?" Among the many many other things that also frighten me, though those tend to be the most prominant. Generally these fears and worries are unfounded and most people tend to like what I've wrote with few complaints or questions regarding the plot, characters, etc, but I still worry that someone, some day may just write me a review ripping my works apart. What do I do if that happens?

Well, as it so turns out, I have also thought of what to do if that were to happen. I'll do as I always do: Just reply as best as I can to the reviewer's points, complaints, and criticisms. That's really all I can do, and I don't think I can do any better.

I'm sure many writers have these conflicting impulses whenever they decide to show their work to others for the first time, even if they have been doing it for years. But I suppose my desire to become a better writer and get a lot of replies (not that I am saying that the two are always interconnected, but I feel that I could become better with a few more constructive reviews) outweighs my fear of getting critized harshly, which also seems to be the case of most writers that I've read about. And anyway, if I plan to get published someday I will need to learn to take rejection and criticism, although I think that I take it reasonably well, as I rarely ever shout or yell at harsh reviews.

But I suppose my fear of harsh criticsm isn't an entirely bad thing. After all, it usually encourages me to write even better so they won't have anything to critize. Not sure how many times that actually works, though.

Tuesday T O E Update, And A U A Update

Posted by TNTOS , Nov 03 2009 · 9 views
Shika Trilogy
Chapter 20: Wanderer's Mission was posted today in Tapestry of Evil. Go and read it.

Okay. Fine. I'll give you a summery if you want:

In this chapter, after escaping the eruption mountain, Nastan decides that now would be the perfect moment to attempt to kill Barilo, but is stopped by Wanderer, who somehow ends up in his mind as a result. And it is here that she discovers exactly what her mission is in Wyoko and what she needs to do to accomplish it.

Now will you go read it? Pretty please tongue.gif ? (Also, three more chapters and the epilogue to go before the grand finale!)

And as for AUA, I think once I'm finished with my NaNoWriMo novel I'll go ahead and rewrite it for the third time. Whenever I try to edit it, it just seems truly terrible and nothing seems to make much sense anymore. I'm going to have to cut out some characters or downplay the importance of others, start the story differently, maybe choose a different viewpoint character to guide the beginning, allow the characters to move the plot in whatever direction they want to, stuff like that. My writing style tends to be that I allow the characters to be in charge of the plotting while I just write it down, so I feel that my plot for AUA was too mechnical and forced than organic and natural, which is something that disappoints me greatly. So even when I do finish posting ToE it will likely be sometime in early to mid 2010 that you, the readers, will be seeing AUA up.

I'm taking it easy, though, since I really have no specifc deadline, as this is just fanfiction, after all. I have no publisher whose demanding that I write this NOW or else he won't pay me. However, I will try to get it up as soon as I can without rushing for the benefit of my readers who've stuck with me since The Tales of Shika Nui (if any have, that is). I know that I definitely want to reach the end of the Toa Shika's journey, which I hope will be even more dramatic and exciting than the ending of ToE even.

My NaNoWriMo word count for today is 3,421 words. For those who are interested, that's the entire first chapter and the title of the second chapter, so I'm making progress, which is always a good thing for NaNoWriMo.

Anyone else have any NaNo word count updates? Not that I am trying to compare myself to anybody, but I'm interested in seeing how others have progressed on the first day.

Tomorrow is not only the first day of November, but is also the beginning of National Novel Writing Month! I've been looking forward to this ever since September, really, though I still feel unprepared for some reason despite my 127 pages of world building notes, character bios, etc. that I have saved on my computer. Maybe that's just pre-NaNo nerves or something *shurg*.

Anyway, I'm thinking of updating my blog every day next month with my current word count, right up until I reach 50k, maybe even higher than that if I've my math right, to perhaps at least 60k if I don't have any interruptions (I know I'm tempting Fate, but Fate's a nice guy sometimes and he's promised to leave me [mostly] alone next month XD). Definitely going to be interesting nonetheless, however.

And no, I don't think I'll be discussing the story itself next month, either, as I don't really want anyone to steal my ideas 'cause I do plan to publish it someday. I know that you guys probably wouldn't take my ideas without asking, but better to be safe than sorry, eh?

My epic, Tapestry of Evil, has 1001 views (at last tongue.gif )! Yay!

True, perhaps that isn't as good or as fun or exciting as having 1001 posts, but that at least shows that people are reading and (hopefully) enjoying it.

On the flipside, Honor versus Greed has zero replies and only 30 views. Wah. Oh well. Short stories generally don't get a lot of replies or views anyway, so I'm not that upset, though I wouldn't mind it if someone decided to review HvG (pretty please?).

Also, it's only about three days away from NaNoWriMo, too. I'm getting very excited, as I have a great idea for a novel and wish to write it as soon as possible.

Tuesday T O E Update, And I Think My Mind Just Got Bleached

Posted by TNTOS , Oct 27 2009 · 10 views
Shika Trilogy
Hey, guys! Chpater 19: Into the Core of the Mountain was posted today for you reading pleasure smile.gif .

In this chapter, the Toa Shika, Wanderer, and the (still bound) Nastan are traveling in a secret tunnel that leads directly into the core of a mountain in order to escape the Shodios, whilst Teivel and his group of Kra-Matoran have found the tunnel, too, and are currenly traveling it not too far behind the Toa Shika themselves. The Toa Shika then discover that the mountain they are in isn't any ordinary mountain, but an inactive volcano! However, soon they realize that Teivel is following them and attempt to escape by crossing a rickety stone bridge that spans the pit of burning lava, and, as the last of the Toa Shika makes it over, Teivel and his gang appears and the Toa of Shadow decides to go Nova in order to stop the Toa!

Will they escape alive? You'll have to read the chapter itself to find out.

As for the other part of the title of this blog entry, ever hear of an anime called Lucky Star? Well, I have, though I haven't actually watched the anime itself and I doubt I ever will.

Anyway, the point is, I saw an edited version of the opening for Lucky Star last night . . . which replaced all of the normal characters with the Decepticons from Transformers. Yes, you heard me right. Anyone who has seen the normal, unedited Lucky Star opening (which I did, after watching the TF one) knows just how wrong that is XD.

So we got Starscream, Megatron, Soundwave, Shockwave, and several other Decepticons dancing (exactly the same way the original LS characters do) to some extremely hyper-sounding Japansese song that totally doesn't fit them. And yes, I think my mind may have exploded from watching that, though to be frank I never really used it much anyway tongue.gif .

And I was just beginning to respect Megs too, after watching Revenge of the Fallen last week (good movie BTW).

Also, four more chapters (plus the epilogue) until the ending of ToE! It's getting closer every week . . .
