High-speed Internet

Posted by TNTOS , Sep 28 2009 · 24 views
Real Life
Just got DSL Internet connection a few hours ago. It's much more faster than dial-up ever was, which will take some getting used to, as I am still slightly surprised when a page or video loads up in ten seconds rather than ten minutes lol.

But I'll most definitely enjoy it. Faster is better where the Internet is concerned IMO.

An Observation About My Reviewing Style

Posted by TNTOS , Sep 26 2009 · 13 views
Reviews
Whenever I review fanfics, I try my best to be constructive. I try to point out the flaws and give suggestions on how to improve, while also pointing out what they did right and to tell them to keep on doing it that way, or even improve it, if possible.

My problem that I am noticing is not that I am too positive and never tell the writer what he did wrong like so many other people do, but that I may be a little too harsh. I sometimes feel that I don't actually point out anything good, even though I do try to at least show that I am interested in the story when making a mostly negative review. I seem to ignore or miss whatever the writer did good half the time, but so far no one has really complained about the way I review. In fact, many people are actually rather happy with my reviews, though they do reply to them if they need to correct a mistake I might have made about their story. Perhaps they're okay with them because the majority of BZP authors don't get a lot of reviews, especially detailed constructive ones such as the kind that I usually write. Still, I feel dissatisfied with my reviews anyway.

I suppose it is easier to point out the flaws in someone else's work than to point out the good parts. Sometimes this is justified when you are reviewing a story that is so bad it's horrible with nothing good in it at all, but I have rarely ran into those kinds of stories here on BZP (except for maybe the Comedies forum, but they may have gotten better since I left it). I generally find and review stories that I think have potential to be great, but still need a little help in developing the characters, plot, and setting and other important story elements. Even so, I sometimes almost forget to point out a few positive things in someone's fanfic.

So I suppose my question is, am I too harsh when I review or do I hit the balance between positive and negative with accuracy? I don't want to be too positive that I ignore the bad parts of the story that really need fixing, yet I don't want to be too negative and focus solely on the flaws without even so much as thinking of what could be good about the story, which could destroy the author's self-confidence (which is something that I never aim to do). I just need to find a good balance, but I am not sure if I hit it or not most of the time.

I'm Back!

Hey, guys! I'm back on BZP (as you have no doubt noticed by now), so yay and stuff, I guess.

Before anyone says anything, it looks like I was wrong about the high-speed Internet thing. We're actually getting it on Monday, but I'm still allowed to go on the Internet and stuff. So sorry for the misinformation in my last blog post smile.gif .

As for epic updates, I'll probably post a new chapter of ToE later today, so just keep an eye on the topic in the forums for now. Or whatever *shrug*.

And in othern news, I have a cold, so I'm feeling kind of bad at the moment, but fortunately it is not Swine flu. Just got to take it easy, I guess.

Also, I finally got TLR a few days ago! Can't say any spoilers until the 29th, but let me just say that, in my opinion, TLR is far superior to the first three movies in both animation and story and I do not regret buying it one bit. Definitely worth the money IMO.

So I'm just going to go browsing around for a bit longer and like I said earlier, I'll post a new chapter of ToE later today (or tomorrow, possibly).

No Updates

Hello, readers of my fanfics (and blog)! I just gotta inform you all that I will not be on BZP for at least two weeks. We're getting high-speed Internet for our computer and that will take about two weeks, during which I will have no Internet connection whatsoever (I think, anyway). So don't expect any updates for Tapestry of Evil tomorrow or any time during the next two weeks.

But I will post new chapters as soon as possible, once we get high-speed Internet downloaded into our computer or something like that (not emersed in computer lingo here, so not sure if I'm using the right words or anything).

So see you all in two weeks' time smile.gif !

T L R Shipped!

Posted by TNTOS , Sep 17 2009 · 8 views
Real Life
Amazon has just shipped The Legend Reborn and according to their website, it should get to me around the 22nd or so. It will likely get here sooner, since Ackar and The Underwater City did.

My brothers and I are very excited about this. I've been avoiding spoilers ever since the movie was released in Australia, so it will be pretty much totally new to me except for the clips I've seen on Amazon and BIONICLE.com.

Can't wait smile.gif !

BTW, is anyone interested in reading a (no pics) Ackar review posted on this blog? I've been thinking about it, since Ackar is my favorite 2009 set that I own so far and reviewing him might be a good idea, though I may not do it if nobody shows any interest.

Ackar's And Mata Nui's Ankle Guards

Posted by TNTOS , Sep 16 2009 · 22 views
BIONICLE
I doubt that I am the only one to notice this, but I have just realized that the ankle guard pieces that come with the Ackar and Mata Nui sets work perfectly as makeshift Kanohi Vahis, the Mask of Time. Heck, I even took one of Ackar's off, put a two inch plus rod in it, and then put it on my Tahu Mistika set. It really does look like a Vahi when you put it on a set with the old-style head.

Like I said before, plenty of other people have probably already notice (and most, if not all, of them are most likely MOCists) but I felt it was worth pointing out just the same.

Today, BIONICLE: The Legend Reborn is officially released in the US! I'm glad I preordered it, although Amazon has yet to ship it. But anyway, the movie looks awesome and I can't wait to watch it.

As for new chapters, both Tapestry of Evil and The Fallen Warrior have new chapters today, the latter's newest chapter being the last for the story. So what are you waiting for? Go read and review them or else tongue.gif !

Finished! (and A New Content Block, Too)

Posted by TNTOS , Sep 14 2009 · 12 views

Last night, at 7:03 PM, I finished writing the second draft of An Unlikely Alliance, topping it off at about 73,204 words and 114 pages on Microsoft Word. Not as much as Tapesty of Evil (which was about 88,631 words and 140 pages on Microsoft Word), but it is a satisfactory length just the same.

I am really satisfied with how it turned out, but I will have to edit it at least three times before I decide that it is worthy of posting on the Internet. I feel it is a very satisfactory way to end the Shika Trilogy and I hope that my readers agree smile.gif . Although I admit, I'll miss writing for the Toa Shika and their adventures. Still, we all got to move on to new projects sometime, eh?

Once I finish editing with AUA, I'll probably try to write (and finish) Glatorian Chronicles #5: Honor or Greed, and then after that, Glatorian Chronicles #6: Escaping the Silent Death.

And when I finish that, I'll begin work on Epic #4: Dimension Hoppers. Lots of fanfiction to look forward to, it seems.

As for the new content block that I just posted a few minutes ago, it has all of the Glatorian Chronicles linked to, with summaries for each. I even color-coded all of the links to represent the main color of each main character, although for some reason I suspect it may hurt the eyes with all of those different colors.

Next content block will likely be my for the miscellaneous short stories, such as Paranoia, for example, although I can't say when I will be putting that up yet.

Ackar And The Underwater City

Posted by TNTOS , Sep 13 2009 · 14 views

According to Amazon, both of those are at the post office. I can't wait to get them, as Ackar is my favorite Glatorian Legends set and TWC's got that exclusive Hydraxon story in it that I am very interested in reading.

But maybe Dad and I'll pick it up on the way back from church today. Assuming, of course, it doesn't rain too much on the way back that we will just have to got straight home without stopping.

As for TLR, it is being sent in a separate package, though they won't be able to ship it until the 15th at the earliest. Oh, well. Ackar will keep my preoccupied until whenever it gets here, I suppose.

Edit: Just got Ackar and TWC. Ackar's really awesome and probably my favorite GL out of the four that my brothers and I have and Hydraxon's Tale, the exclusive story in the graphic novel itself, is also pretty cool, with some nice artwork. Very different style than Sayger, but it's cool nonetheless.

Vastus, Kiina, And Mata Nui

Posted by TNTOS , Sep 10 2009 · 13 views
BIONICLE
Yesterday my older brother got Mata Nui, I got Vastus, and my younger brother got Kiina, making those three the first Glatorian Legends we have.

I'll just do mini-reviews of each them for now. Don't have time to go in-depth and I don't feel like it, either.

Kiina: My favorite of the three. Love her wide range of arm articulation amd looks really good, too.

Mata Nui: Second favorite. He looks very complete to me and his color scheme is nice, too. Even the tiny Ignika works well on him, in my opinion.

Vastus: My least favorite of the three, though I still like him a bit. His scythe looks pretty cool and he has some interestingly-designed armor.

As I already said in the previous blog entry, I have ordered Ackar from Amazon and according to Amazon's tracking system he should get here by the 15th. Although I do not own Ackar, I think he looks like the best GL and I really can't wait to get him.

I finally pre-ordered The Legend Reborn last night. It will be shipped on the 21st, along with Ackar and The Underwater City, the sixth BIONICLE graphic novel. So I'm pretty happy right now. I am also hyped for TLR and can't wait for it to become available on Amazon.

I Am Worried

Posted by TNTOS , Sep 06 2009 · 14 views
Writing
What am I worried about?

Well, currently, I am planning and worldbuilding an original fiction series I call Two Worlds. Been putting a lot of effort and work into it, but I just came across something that may complicate things.

In one of the many worlds that the story takes place in, the people of said world worship a god named Razac. Unfortunately, what I learned a few days ago was that a very similiar name, Ra'zac, is used in the Inheritance series of books.

You see, I plan to publish Two Worlds eventually (after I have written it, of course) and Razac and the people who worship him will play a very insignificant role, but I'm worried of being accused of plagarism, although I can assure you that I thought of the name Razac far before I knew that the name Ra'zac even existed.

Although I am hoping that no one will really notice or care, I can't help but feel a little worried that somebody might just get angry at me and accuse me of plagarism, even though I haven't stolen any names, at least intentionally, anyway.

Does anyone know if it actually counts as plagarism or am I just getting worried for nothing? Would appreciate it if someone answered. If not, I may have to do the research myself, although I am pretty sure that it doesn't count as plargarism, as it isn't the exact same name, right?

What I Plan To Buy Soon

Posted by TNTOS , Sep 05 2009 · 13 views
BIONICLE
On the 15th of this month, when The Legend Reborn is coming out in the USA, I will be ordering TLR, Ackar, and the sixth BIONICLE Graphic Novel (mostly for the Hydraxon story) off of Amazon.com. I have some money leftover from my birthday and those three things are what I want the most right now.

And I will be avoiding any topic, post, blog entry, blog comment, or anything of that sort that has anything to do with TLR spoilers. This is the first BIONICLE movie in four years and it looks really awesome. I really don't want it spoiled for me.

Just to make sure that I don't get it spoiled, I will be locking this blog entry. So there tongue.gif .

Fanfic Updates

Glatorian Chronicles
Just posted the first chapter of the three chapter mini-epic The Fallen Warrior. As I said in the story topic, I will be posting one chapter a week until it is finished, which means that it will take about three weeks to finish posting. Go read it here: Link.

Tapestry of Evil was also updated today, this chapter introducing a new type of Rahi and sets up a cliffhanger. Anyone whose read up to that point before the Dataclysm will probably know what happens next, but after chapter 12 the story takes a drastically different turn than the original version. Won't talk about it here, but I hope people will like it, as it does reintroduce a character who had been previously introduced late in the story and never got much screen time. This time, said character will be much more entertaining and unique, I hope smile.gif .

Second draft of An Unlikely Alliance is coming along and is much different than the first draft, but so far I'm liking this draft better. Been having a few problems with some characters, but they aren't too big, I hope.

Also, the fifth GC will star Strakk and its working title is Honor or Greed, although it is subject to change at a whim. I'll probably begin work on it once I finish AUA's second draft, although I find it hard to write from Strakk's point of view, even if the actual plot is interesting (at least in my opinion, anyway).

Beginnings And Endings

Posted by TNTOS , Aug 30 2009 · 24 views
Writing
I often find that when I start a new story, I have a hard time writing the beginning. Everything seems to go by painstakingly slow, like rusted gears in an old clock. Nothing seems interesting or fun or entertaining or whatever until I get past the first few paragraphs.

Fortunately, I never give up, even if the beginning is boring, but I know that it will eventually pick up sometime and it always does. The beginning still isn't that good, but I can always edit or revise it later (which I do, of course).

Now the middle of the story, that's almost always the easist part for me to write. Sometimes I get stuck in the mud, but it always interests me. Possibly because in the middle of the story I now know my characters, the location, plot, etc better than when I started, making it much easier to drive conflict between the characters and the enviornment and such because I know it so well and am familiar with it.

I also tend to have an easier time writing a series with characters that I am familiar with, although even those can suffer from having hard to write beginnings as well.

And then there comes a time when I have to end the story, which can also be hard, but in a different way than beginnings. While my beginnings tend to start out slower, my endings tend to keep trying to go on because I start to unconsciously add more and more stuff to the ending that just seems plain unnecessary to me at the time but at the same time I realize if I delete it that it the ending will just feel rushed and badly written. This doesn't affect me as much with short stories, but with epics/novels this can annoy me.

Ironically, later on, when I am in the editing stage, the endings turn out much better than I thought at the time (although of course I still edit it because no ending is perfect the first time written).

However, I have discovered that when I go ahead and rewrite a story for its second draft, its beginning and endings tend to be much more natural and interesting for me, probably because I know where I want the story to go and so it gives me the will to continue writing and I know when to naturally end it.

I have been using this technique - writing the first draft from scratch, then deleting it and rewriting it in its second draft - for my yet-to-be-posted Glatorian Chronicles #4: The Fallen Warrior and An Unlikely Alliance, the latter of which I am still in the process of rewriting, and it has worked incredibly well. Methinks this will be my main technique when editing short stories and epics from now on, mostly because I enjoy rewriting my stories a lot.

So, to my fellow writers out there, I pose these questions to you:

1) What's easiest for you to write: Beginnings, middles, or endings?

1a) Why is the one you chose easiet to write?

2) What's the hardest part for you to write: Beginnings, middles, or endings?

2a) Why is the one you chose hardest to write?

Hopefully your answers will generate some interesting comments in the comments section below smile.gif .

Release Date For G C #4

Posted by TNTOS , Aug 29 2009 · 17 views
Glatorian Chronicles
Glatorian Chronicles #4: The Fallen Warrior will be posted on Tuesay, September 1st, 2009.

Since it is far too long to be a short story, it will be a three chapter epic. So if seems awkward to read one chapter at a time, you will know that it is because I originally wrote it as short story and was supposed to be read all at once. And yes, I will still be counting it as a part of the Glatorian Chronicles series as a whole, since it follows the point of view of one Glatorian (Tarix, in this case) and is in first person as well.

Just thought I'd update for anyone who might be interested.

Character Dialogue

Posted by TNTOS , Aug 28 2009 · 25 views
Writing
Whenever I write the dialogue of characters in my stories, I don't usually worry about grammar. I mean, yeah, most of them speak pretty good and are understandable to the average reader, but if I happen to see a grammar mistake I usually overlook it because in my opinion, character dialogue doesn't necessarily have to have perfect grammar, since few people in real life speak perfect grammar and since good fiction emulates real life, I let my characters speak in bad grammar sometimes, if necessary.

Of course, I understand the difference between real life and fiction. In fiction, you want to be clear, precise, and you can achieve that through editing and revising. You can't usually do that in real life unless you're preparing a speech, so it makes sense that a lot of people would only speak average level grammar than perfect grammar. Most of the time, when my characters speak bad grammar, it is sort of a mistake, but I rarely change it unless it doesn't make sense and would confuse the reader.

So whenever I review fanfiction, unless it is totally incomprehensible and I can't figure out what they're saying, I rarely bother to critique the grammar in character dialogue (although if I see very bad grammar in a paragraph outside of dialogue I will point it out and tell you what was wrong with it and how to improve it).

Some people may disagree with me, of course, and they have every right to do that. But I find that this is a pretty subjective idea and one that people rarely discuss unless it is about the different words and speech patterns that characters and people use when having speaking sometimes.
