The Koth's Priority for learning Languages

Posted by Kothra , Oct 16 2012 · 104 views

1) French: four years of high school French, going with this as the required language for an International Studies major.

2) Japanese: one year of self-study, also just really want to learn it

3) German: because I want to, because Europe, and because airsoft (I have a ton of Bundeswehr gear)

4) Russian: because I can

Other: Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, Dutch, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (may or may not ever get around to these)

I speak Spanish and French, and a wee bit of Dutch, which is next on my list to learn. After that is probably Portuguese. Problem is all of them have some very common roots, being Latinate languages ('cept for Dutch, which is Germanic in nature, although you still see some similarities), so I often mix up Spanish and French.

I also self-study languages, the ones I currently study are Japanese, German, and Irish Gaelic, though I have considered others like Swedish and Spanish. I can assure you that Japanese is actually a lot easier then it appears, assuming you have not yet started. Japanesepod101.com is a great place to learn it from, or at the very least to get a foundation to work with.
Yeah, in my year of learning Japanese I have indeed discovered that it really isn't that hard. Except memorising Kanji. That can be rather difficult.

I'll probably check out that site. Hopefully it can help me keep my Japanese 'in shape' while I wait to take the level 1 college course next fall.
Dutch is a coarse, rough language with confusing grammar and a distinct lack of synonyms.
So sayeth the Dutchman.
