Did you set them properly? Most options are off by default.

I suggest double-checking these settings.

Additionally, you can set notifications to alert you at different times. If you have trouble with certain followed content, you might be able to fix that by unfollowing the content, then clicking "follow" again and making sure that "automatically" is selected.

So all the sudden my blog entries stopped automatically making me follow them.

But I follow a bunch of awesome blogs, like Sumiki's, and never get told when a new entry is added.

Try unfollowing the blogs you follow, and then re-follow them. That worked for me; my notifications never worked until I un/re-followed all the blogs I was previously following.
