08: Conundrum

A lot of "famous" webcomics started while the artist wasn't exactly "good". Have you seen Dave Willis (of Shortpacked!) in his early strips? Terrible.

No seriously though I read all of his stuff and I know what you mean. Maybe I just hold myself to too high a standard. I can't bring myself to produce bad art that I want people to read...

Sorry for the mini rant, but I just gotta chime in with how much I hate this excuse - There's one thing, ONE THING, that makes the great artists better than everyone else - the fact that they look at their work and say "I can do better". To quote one of the greatest renaissance artists, Michelangelo, "If people knew how hard I had to work to gain my mastery, it wouldn't seem wonderful at all." If you are an artist, you will take that feeling of despair at your own work and use it as inspiration to redouble your efforts. Shrinking away is NOT an option, not if you truly want to get better. If you can't bring yourself to produce bad art, you will never produce any.

Basically what Deevee said. When Jeph Jacques of Questionable Content started out, I could draw better than him! Ten years later, his art is some of the best around.

 

(his writing, on the other hand, is not, but hey that's not the point :3)

 

Basically, start now and by the time a lot of people start reading it you'll be a decent artist.

2. Circular arguments don't prove anything.
