Hostess strike

I find the strike actually counterproductive.  Those people on strike did realize if Hostess died, they would lose their jobs along with all the other Hostess employees, right?  Not to mention make a bunch of desparate snackers pay %95 more for twinkles on eBay.

I don't know. I don't think "MOAR MUNNYS!" is a very good thing to lose your job for.

Hostess was not reducing what they gave to them "cause the could", the company was experiencing financial problems before and reduced it for that reason. Also they are getting rid of 18,500 employees for a 5,000 employee protest. I highly doubt they will have any luck in this economy.

Yes, at least you made a point, now good luck having no income and finding a job under these conditions.

Earlier Hostess had two unions against it, 5000 were in the Baker's Union which caused the company crash and another along side it, the other union was The Teamster's Union which represented 6700 employees. Hostess saw what they were asking and made a new contract that would attempt to appeal to them, the Teamster's agreed to it (on 11/14) but the Baker's Union did not. So rather then see them as sympathetic everymen sticking it to "the man" they now seem like uncompromising group of people who make unreasonable demands to a company who was willing to make a compromise and allow them to keep working. Also now 13,500 workers have to pay for it, with the remaining 5000 possibly being worse off.

Oh and don't mistake my ideologies, I have problems with both corperations and unions, but in this particular case from what I currently know, Hostess seems like the "lesser of two evils" to me, so to speak.

If the employees had given in, then it might have severely reduced the power of the union (and maybe other unions too, if CEOs discovered that threatening to cash in their chips and liquidate their company was a quick, easy way to bust a strike). If the executives had given in, the company might have lost its ability to be sustainable. It was a stalemate, and I don't think either party deserves 100% of the blame.

And I doubt Hostess snacks are going to stay a rare commodity. Liquidation means that their assets will be sold off, and I'm sure other snack food companies like Little Debbie would love to become the new producers of iconic American snackfoods like Twinkies. Best case scenario is that these companies retain the production facilities and rehire some of the former Hostess employees to continue producing Twinkies and such under the new brand.

Yes, I know, but when striking to gain more money means you lose what you're making already, it's not really worth it. I'd rather be content with the $8.45/hr. I make now vs. no money if I was fired.

Huh. Just found out the CEO gave himself a 300% raise AFTER the Unions agreed to a first set of strikes.

Clearly it is all the fault of the Unions. Of course.
