The BaseBlog
Ignoring my own opinions on the subject, this entry is about an article I read concerning the possibility of a gay James Bond. As in the character being gay, not the actor who plays him. It also mentions one actress discussing the possibility of a future female or black James Bond.
I have never watched any Bond movies or read any Bond books, but from what I know about the series, though there are several actors portraying Bond, they are all performing the same man. I can live with that. I wish the Star Wars movies were going to do that, but it sound like Episode VII will still have the same old actors portraying the same characters.
What I find annoying is that the people discussing this don't want to preserve the character. If its the same character through all the movies, how can he suddenly be gay? At the very least, he would have to be bisexual, otherwise one of the necessary ingredients of a Bond movie would have to be left out (Because from what I've heard, you can't have a Bond movie without a Bond girl). For that matter, how can he suddenly be female? Even if he became a transvestite, wouldn't he start going by "Jamie Bond" or something like that? And if he can't say 'Bond. James Bond', then you take away yet another fundamental element of Bond movies.
Sort of like that new Sherlock Holmes show with a female Watson. Why? If you want a female sidekick for Holmes, then name her something other than Watson, because he's just as much an icon as Holmes is. People have a distinct idea of what Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote, and when you fiddle with it for what appears to be little more than a desire to diversify, it comes off as cheap pandering.
I am no Bond fan, but I am in favor of preserving popular characters. Daniel Craig seems to agree. The reason there can't be a gay Bond is because Bond isn't gay. (And he proves it in every single movie) And for legacy's sake, if you're going to give Sherlock Holmes a sidekick, well, by golly, make it a British doctor character. Preferably with a mustache, and rather rotund. Because that's who Dr. Watson is.
BTW, I don't watch either of these, (I seldom watch any new TV shows. Though I like NCIS and JAG before it.) this is just a thought I had.
And for my sake, please don't start discussing anything controversial. This entry is about the preservation of popular literary (and I suppose cinematic) characters in their film and television adaptations, not sexuality, race, gender, or anything else. Start discussing it, and I'll boil you in oil or something. Maybe tar and feathers, but I think I would prefer keeping my pillows intact.
I'll think of something.

I find it hilarious how many people think that video was real. I also find the video itself hilarious.
Of course, judging from how those people responded, all politicians ought to actually start doing that if they want votes.
it also tells me that I know virtually nothing about pop culture until two months after it happens.

I thought about posting this in S&T, but there's too much speculation, I think. I'm still formulating ideas anyway. Plus, I don't know half of what I'm talking about is.
I was thinking about infections and viruses in BIONICLE. For the most part, the word "virus" is used in BIONICLE to refer to something the Brotherhood of Makuta used in experiments. "Infection" and the only real mention of illness (in MNOG) involves infected Kanohi.
My idea is that viruses in BIONICLE are similar to computer viruses, that infiltrate a computer and can pretty much take over. Given that much of BIONICLE now is compared to computer programs and so forth, this makes sense.
Viruses, when used by Makuta, "program" the Rahi they are making. One virus will give them a more aggressive program, one will give them a more domesticated program, and so forth, but they can also be used to alter the program of other creatures, as shown when Teridax used viruses to put Mata Nui into "sleep mode", and essentially shut him down, much like a computer virus.
Makuta viruses could also be used to add tissue to whatever Rahi they are creating, much like a biological cancer virus reprograms cells to make a new type of tissue (even though in the Real World, tumors are dangerous rather than beneficial--and given the failed experiments some Makuta had, it's probably accurate to describe them that way) A Makuta would start with a base, and then use both "biologic-style" viruses and "computer-style" viruses to shape and program the animal, respectively.
Infection, on the other hand, I think is not an illness at all, but rather something the Great Beings had in mind from the very start. Given the importance of the Makuta's mission, particularly in Teridax's case, it makes sense that somewhere along the line, they would need help from some of the Great Being's creations. So the Great Beings allowed the Makuta to take a portion of their "program" (antidermis) and give it physical form (kraata), separate from the Makuta. Like a biological virus, this would be essentially a packet of information that would reprogram a being when they infected their Kanohi, which contains a copy of that being's "program" (and without which many of them cannot continue to operate). Once infected, that virus' program would take over the system, and that infected being now serves the Makuta for as long as they wear that mask.
Kraata could also infect other devices intended for infection, like the "Comet" brand Kohlii balls and they also could control Rahkshi armor using that same basic "Servant of Makuta" program, but until inside Rahkshi armor, their primary purpose was to spread the program.
