I recently got the game and tried it out.
It is amazing. Perhaps one of the best LEGO Games yet.
For gameplay, it is very similar to the original LEGO Star Wars titles - there are still small character hatches and dark force patches, which are nothing special. What is special is the fact that you can make any Jedi/Sith wield two lightsabers, provided you find the right red brick, although this sadly kills any 'backward' lightsaber stances, such as Ahsoka Tano's. This also kills specialised stances - all lightsaber characters have their own way of holding their saber - making them wield two makes them adopt Ventress' style and fighting movements.
The minikit system is new - you don't find pieces of ships, you find pieces of characters, which when finished are presumably unlocked. I think this is where the classic and Force unleashed characters come in - I think I have managed to build part of a Stormtrooper with one minikit.
The game is basically an amalganation of LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Harry Potter, LEGO Batman, LEGO Indiana Jones 2 and strategy games. The main villains and their subordinates split into three groups, taking over various planets. Each group takes over a specific storyline - Asajj Ventress takes over the Christophsis, Ryloth, Rugosa and Blue Shadow Virus episodes, Grievous takes any episodes he appears in, and Dooku takes the rest. Once you defeat a villain or see a character in a cutscene that isn't immediately playable, they can be found either wondering around the control ship(s) or in the ship prison hold: the villains can be freed by other villains. R4-P17, for example, is one of these characters you just find. You can once again unlock characters by playing as them in the level, and this is a nice feature to welcome back after the frustrating, albeit more challenging, way of finding the characters in LEGO Harry Potter.
The hub is very clever. It is Anakin Skywalker's command ship, and there is a chance to fly outside the ship and take part in a perpetual space battle with what looks like the Invisible Hand, which is presumably the CIS hub. You can travel to certain systems via hysperspace and battle to convert the system to Republic/CIS via Strategy Game-like fighting - I.e capturing bases, building barracks etc. You can do this in either system, which could get repetetive, but it is also rather enjoyable. The troop control function is very nice, and you can turn entire battalions into one multi-fire weapon.
They've made a new type of Droideka as well - the red-shielded Droideka. These Droideka's shields are impervious to any weapons and have to be killed by throwing stuff at them or causing rocks to fall on them. It's nice to see more variation when it comes to the villain drones.
All in all, they've made the LEGO Star Wars game much more Star Wars-like than the others, with features such as the land/space battles, even just in the hub area.
