So, insensitivity and equality

I could write a whole rant over the recent skirmishing over equality and freedom for all regardless of how you're born, but honestly I haven't read nearly enough of it to properly say something specific to it. So I figure a broader look can be done, but I doubt anyone wants to read a rant on it period.

So I give you this to think on; we loath and despise sin and wrongdoing because it hurts people. Stealing something takes something else away from a person or people. Murder removes life, something precious that can never be replaced entirely. Adultery causes emotional harm to the victim of it, though with that it's a bit more fuzzy. In general, when we think something is a sin, it's because there's a negative consequence to it. How you weigh out something that causes both positives and negatives is your own personal business and philosophy.

So I must ask, to all those who think that particular sexual orientations, something you can't even control, but even assuming you could control, is wrong and a sin, what negatives does it cause? What harm is done to us as a species?

Bonus question. How wrong is it that, by confronting someone over an act that causes no wrong, you yourself cause wrong by emotionally scarring that person? Perhaps you didn't mean to, perhaps you tried to be nice, and that can be applauded, but it's the straw that breaks the camel's back many times. You yourself may not cause harm, but combined with others, that constant act of telling that they are doing wrong, is harmful.

Well, I'm certainly not the person that you're directing this at... I was trying to say this earlier, but the entry asking about it got locked, but it's not the orientation I believe people are guilty of, but its the acting out on said orientation. The second IS something you can control.

I believe all people are called to live chastely... Besides, from someone who will most likely never marry in his entire life, marriage is not the only remedy to loneliness. In fact a married person can be lonely, very much; on the other hand, an unmarried person can be lonely, or can be not lonely, while still lacking romantic companionship.

I believe all people are called to live chastely... Besides, from someone who will most likely never marry in his entire life, marriage is not the only remedy to loneliness. In fact a married person can be lonely, very much; on the other hand, an unmarried person can be lonely, or can be not lonely, while still lacking romantic companionship.

I believe that Uggs are ugly as sin, but that doesn't mean I go around telling off people who wear them.

Not directed just at you, just a view on the whole thing in general.

@Zarayna; sorry, but that sounds like a cop-out to the original question. Why is acting on it wrong? Why does it hurt the community, society, the species?

If one believes in a religion that doesn't accept alternative orientations, that's their own business. Pushing that opinion onto those who don't share it, though, causes harm.

I only want to say that I feel a little confused, and would maybe like some clarification? (As long as the clarification would fit under BZPower rules, of course. If not, you could send me an IM if you'd like to -- I believe mine's still in my profile?)

But what I'm confused about is... like, okay. If I had a boyfriend, for hypothetical's sake here, I'm not understanding how my showing him affection and care is hurting anyone, or anything? Like, giving him a hug, a peck on the cheek, taking him out on a date (or vice-versa)... I'm not sure how this hurts anyone? It's certainly not hurting me -- I would love to have someone like that, someone I know who I can go to for support when I need it, someone I can count on when other aspects of my life go awry and simply someone to be happy with. I can't see how it'd hurt him, either?

I don't understand why it's so wrong for me to act on my desires, but it's totally okay for heterosexual people to. I don't understand why people seem to think I'm incapable of feeling love for other men, but don't bat an eye at the girl crushing on whatever-his-name-is. I don't understand why people are justified in criticizing me for something that they likely do themselves, just with a different gender. I don't understand why, if I so desired to do so, if I made a blog entry highlighting a struggle I have gone through in relation to my sexual orientation (as an example, I went to a private school when I was younger that would, very likely, have expelled me for it) why people would suddenly have the right to turn my plight into a political issue, or into a religious issue that only serves to turn it into something that they can have a clear conscience to disagree with.

I could go on with some more confusions like the above, but anymore isn't necessary from my point.

And I totally mean all this in the most respectful way -- I seriously am confused here.

And again, if you would like to clarify but can't due to restraints on site, I'm totally cool with IM's.

So, what you are saying is that nobody should be allowed to show their love or even adoration for whomever they care about?

Also, saying that acting on orientation is something you can control also comes off as offensive. If I want to kiss my boyfriend in public, I'm going to kiss my boyfriend in public. When two people care for each other it isn't so simple as to try to control those things. You can't control who you love. Most people also don't want to be lonely, humans seek companionship because they do not want to be alone. Some living creatures are by nature solitary; as a species, humans are not.

Just to say swiftly... But not all sin directly hurts others. That just doesn't mean it's not wrong. It all depends on how you view it.

I personally dislike religion getting involved, but it's a certainty that it'll happen. I simply have to say, I'm cool with people disliking who I and others are like, but I'd honestly prefer them to keep it to themselves. Being talked about behind your back is never good, but ignorance is bliss.

I appreciate the thought Waffles. Maybe someday soon I'll write an essay on the topic; it'll probably turn into a whole book. It's just so hard to look at sexuality in a vacuum without going on into gender politics, which really, you could fill a library with books on that topic, and then there's my own personal and apparently not-too-common view of the matter.

You see Alex, I thought that this whole discussion would lead to intense debate regarding high-level abstractions of what we're dealing with here with mutliple quatations of ethicists through history.

I agree with Gato's arguments, but I just didn't find any of the ones used here to be very interesting except sort of yours.

Also, I beleive we should try to save the Uggs so they regret thier decision to be Uggs.

And Zara, about the chasitity issue, aren't you grateful your parents didn't follow that?

Just to say swiftly... But not all sin directly hurts others. That just doesn't mean it's not wrong. It all depends on how you view it.

The staff decides what is BZP appropriate, and the admins have decided that homosexuality is a BZP safe topic to discuss. If we were to preclude sexualities other than hetrosexuality from BZP than we would logically have to preclude hetrosexuality as well. There is nothing controversial about love. Love is only controversial when politics and religion enter into it, both of which are mostly banned from BZP discussion barring a few instances. We came to this policy several years ago during the controversy surrounding images depicting same sex couples kissing, and we have stood by it ever since.

Please stop with the discussion of religion in its relation to sexualities. You are both breaking the rules as well as perpetuating a society based on homophobia. BZP will not tolerate this, and if you continue I will ask higher level staff to take action against you.

This blog is written by Alex Humva, penname of some random teenager named Alex Censored.
