Graphic Design Help

Twitch, YouTube, Streaming
I'm looking for some help from one of you creative types out there. I would like some overlay images we can use during BZPower's streams, both for builds and games, to help share info for people who tune in part-way through and give them more of a BZPower-feel.

For a visual style, I'm thinking something like the overlays we use for our YouTube thumbnails, with the angled line and the gears, but obviously smaller so it takes up less space. Maybe one in the bottom left and one in the top right. One would have generic BZPower info, the site name, URL, and social media names and icons. The other would be mostly empty to be customized for each stream. For sets it would have the set name, piece count, and price. For games it would have the game name. An overlay with directions for the giveaways we do might be a good idea too.

Resolution should be 1920x1080 minimum and the file format should be something I can easily edit in GIMP to add the required text, so XCF or PSD probably.

I am ready to be wowed. :)

Microsoft recently added a new feature to Xbox Live allowing people to make clubs so people who share common interests can get find each other, get together, and play videogames. I figured BZPower was an interest so I made us a club! Give it a join and hopefully it will help you find some like-minded gamers to play videogames with.

Maybe if it gets some momentum we'll do gaming nights? Would that be a cool thing?

Taking Administrative Action

Posted by Black Six , in BZPower May 22 2016 · 2,373 views

I meant to get something like this posted earlier this weekend, but commitments to BrickFair New England prevented that from happening in a more timely manner, so I'm sorry for that.

In light of some recent developments on and off BZP, I think it's important for us to talk briefly about how the staff take action. Sometimes a situation arises and the staff need time to sort things out, so member accounts are suspended to stop further posts until we can get to the bottom of things. This is generally a temporary measure.

At this point there will be a lot of discussion and research before any permanent action is taken. When the staff does finally take administrative action, such as removing Proto or banning someone, we do so using all of the information available to us at the time. Often we have more insight than the general membership: for example there may be private messages, emails, or server logs that can provide information to help us make our decision. Because much of this is personal, we do not usually openly share it out of respect for people's privacy, especially since there may be other members involved apart from the ones action is being taken against.

Of course if more information is brought to light after the fact we can and do reevaluate our decisions and can reverse or take take additional action. We are not all-knowing robots that monitor everyone all the time.

Finally, we take personal threats to the safety of our members and staff very seriously, and this can often have an impact on the action we take.

I hope that helps clear things up. If you have any general questions, I'm always happy to answer them. I will not be going into any specific details about any actions we have taken though.

Thanks as always to all of our members for their understanding and support.

BZPower Company

Halo, BZPower, Company
No, BZPower is not getting incorporated. :P

Halo 5: Guardians is releasing next week, and today 343 Industries announced their clan feature for the game and started to allow people to make and join them.

BZPower, the Halo 5 company.

I'm pretty excited for this game, although I'm sure I won't be able to play as much as I'd like. Still though, I think it might be fun to play with BZPower members. If you're planning on picking up Halo 5, feel free to join the group!

Birthday, Anniversary, Old, Life
The past few days have been full of milestones that really have been putting things in perspective for me.

I was born on August 5th, 1987. Today I turn twenty-eight! Go me for surviving this long!

I joined BZPower on August 2nd, 2001. I've been a member for fourteen years now. This site has become a huge part of my life for so many reasons.

An interesting thing happens when you combine those two dates and do a little math. Thanks to the wonders of the Internet I can tell that I was alive for 5111 days before I joined BZPower.

Similar magic tells us that 5111 days after August 2nd, 2001 was July 31st, 2015. So as of last Friday, I had been a member of BZPower for the same amount of time that I hadn't been a member. That means that as of last Saturday, I've now been a member of this community for over half of my life. That is crazy and scary and awesome.

Tomorrow, August 6th, 2014, will be my fourteenth anniversary of joining the staff. I was not always the most active staffer, but I've managed to hang in here for almost a decade and a half.

This came up at BrickFair this past weekend, but it's worth reiterating here, I think. I just can't imagine what my life would be like without BZPower. There's so many meaningful relationships I've made through this site, both personal and professional, that I wouldn't have otherwise. Without BZPower, I would have likely fallen out of Bionicle and LEGO in general. I probably never would have gone to a LEGO convention, especially as an exhibitor, let alone the twenty-six that I've been to now. (That is scary!) I wouldn't have run a podcast for four years, or be a LEGO Ambassador, or have gone to New York Comic Con to help relaunch Bionicle. So many things that have helped shape my life would not have happened that I'd probably be a different person. All because of one little website.

I'm so thankful that I stumbled upon this place fourteen years ago and that the community has been so open and welcoming to all the fans that have come joined me here since then. You all make it worth coming back to each day and working to do better and make the site even more awesome.

Here's to another fourteen years?

BZPower Members in Dallas or Texas?

Dallas, Texas, BrickUniverse
I'm putting out a call to all of our BZPower members out there - who lives in the Dallas area or Texas in general?

BrickUniverse Dallas is happening this November and the organizer has been in touch and wants it to be a big event with lots of AFOLs and a big Bionicle presence. If you register as part of BZPower or BioniLUG we can probably get your registration fee waived as long as you bring at least one MOC for the display.

So let me know if you live in the area and might be interested in coming this fall!

Movie Recommendations

Movie, Film, Blockbuster
Every now and then in conversation someone will mention a movie they love that I haven't seen. There's also a bunch of films from the past few years that I wanted to see but never got around to. So I've decided to finally make a list of all these films to keep track of and help motivate myself to actually watch them.

Below is the list I have so far, but I'm sure it's not complete. That's where you guys come in. What are some of your all-time favorite movies, or movies that you think are worth seeing for their artistic or storytelling merits?

Please make your suggestions in the comments. If there are movies people suggest multiple times that I've already seen, I'll make a separate list of those to help with duplicates.

To Watch:
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
Terminator Salvation
The Hurt Locker
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
X-Men: First Class
Men in Black 3
The Dark Knight Rises
Wreck-It Ralph
A Good Day to Die Hard
Monsters University
The Wolverine
The Wolf of Wall Street
The Amazing Spider-Man 2
X-Men: Days of Future Past
The Imitation Game
Kingsman: The Secret Service

Thanks everyone!

PAX East 2015

PAX, Boston, Videogames
I had the pleasure of going up to PAX East in Boston, Massachusetts from March 6th to 8th. As always, it was a blast and it was great to hang out with Than the Moa and Watashi Wa and meet a couple of WaWa's friends. I thought for a change I'd endeavor to take some more pictures and blog about it and share some of my experiences.

The Lines
PAX East is famous for its massive lines for everything. When you cram 70,000 or more people into a single space, you're going to have to wait for stuff. It's not unusual for people to line up for panels over an hour in advance, and lines to play popular upcoming games like Overwatch take two hours or more. With the lines being such an iconic part of the event, I decided that would be the focus of what I share. If you follow me on Twitter you probably saw some of my tweets rating the lines and sharing pictures. Below is a little more of the same, but not constrained to 140 characters.

Posted Image

I was able to snag a Media badge for the event, which meant Friday morning I got to wait in the very short Media/VIP line. By PAX standards it was pretty tame, and meant I got to check out the show floor before most people. No regrets!

Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image

Saturday, on the other hand, I had to line up with everyone else to get into the expo floor. The reason so many people line up is so they can rush in and get lined up for things like Oculus Rift, Gigantic, Overwatch, and other multi-hour waits. I was trying to line up for Rooster Teeth, but when I got to the booth they weren't even there.

Posted Image

I didn't make the same mistake on Sunday and decided to wait and have some breakfast and not go into the expo floor until after the lines cleared. I snapped this from one of the catwalks that crosses the expo floor on the second level. Yes, there are a LOT of people...

Posted Image

A much smaller and faster-moving line was the one to get swag bags. The bags were a bit disappointing this year, only containing the program guide, a deck of Magic cards, a promotional Superfight card, and some ads. Oh well.

Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image

I definitely took advantage of my early media access on Friday by going to play Overwatch, the FPS being made by Blizzard. Yes you heard that right. The gameplay was tight and certainly seems like it's getting ready for release. I only played three or four of the different classes, and of those, McCree was by far my favorite. I'm intrigued to play more when it comes out.

Posted Image Posted Image

The day before PAX East started, they announced Rock Band 4! The game wasn't on display, but you could preorder an exclusive PAX East guitar controller, which I did. They also had Amplitude available to play, which was interesting, but I definitely need more time to really learn it, and not play with a group of people that cranked the difficulty up to expert.

Gabe and Tycho

Posted Image

We caught part of the Gabe and Tycho panel where they basically spent an hour answering people's questions and making us all laugh. As the minds behind Penny Arcade and PAX, it's great to see that they stay so involved with their fans.

Rooster Teeth

Posted Image Posted Image

The reason we caught Gabe and Tycho was because we wanted to get good seats for the Rooster Teeth panel, which we succeeded at! The panel was pretty great and we got to see some awesome videos, including the Red vs Blue Season 13 teaser, a Minecraft Let's Play rap (the content of which isn't really BZP-safe), some rough work for the next season of X-Ray and Vav, and a hilarious Funhaus video. The Q&A sessions were a bit groan-worthy at times, but overall I had fun as always.

Rooster Teeth Line

Posted Image

Of course I also wanted to go to the Rooster Teeth booth to buy some stuff and get them to sign other stuff. Any time Jack, Adam, and Jordan were there though, the line was super-long. I probably went by the booth fifteen times all told seeing if they were there, and if they were, trying to get in line. It was frequently capped though, and when I'd go back to see if it was uncapped I ended up missing the opportunity. Eventually I got in though, and scored some swag and got some signatures.

Halo Cosplay

Posted Image

One time while I was walking by the Microsoft booth a group of Halo cosplayers had gathered. Those costumes are incredible and I wish I had the time and talent to make one of my own.

Major Nelson Radio

Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image

Another staple of PAX East for me is the Major Nelson podcast panel. The whole crew was there, consisting of Larry 'Major Nelson' Hryb, Eric 'e' Neustadter, Laura 'lollip0p' Massey, and Jeff 'Jef United' Rubenstein. They were joined by Eric Pope of Harmonix to talk about Rock Band 4 and Jeff from Undead Labs to talk about State of Decay: Year-One Survival Edition. It was a great show and I definitely enjoyed it.

Halo Championship Series Season 1 Finals

Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image

By a stroke of luck, after I finally decided to go to PAX East, 343 and ESL announced that the finals of Season 1 of the Halo Championship Series, the competitive Halo e-sports league, would be held at the event. I've been a competitive Halo fan since 2003 or 2004, so I was super-stoked by this. It had been a while since I had been to a LAN competition in person (honestly it has been a while since competitive Halo was really worth watching) so I made a point to watch as much of the event as I could. I was not disappointed, as the nine teams (top eight seeds and a wildcard from Europe) all put on a great show. The Losers Bracket Finals was quite possibly the best series I've ever seen in the history of the game. CLG went down 2-0 to Noble Black but then tied up the series at 2-2. Game 5 would decide the winner and who would go play in the championship match for a grand prize of $50,000. And then the two teams tied! The official rules stated that there would be a shortened replay of the game, in this case Shrine (Sanctuary) Team Slayer, but that ended up in a tie too. Long story short, the two teams tied four times total before CLG finally won to advance. The crowd at the event was massive and everyone was on the edge of their seat watching (if they had a seat - there were so many people it was standing room only). Even though CLG ended up losing to Evil Geniuses in the finals, it was amazing to be there in person and feel the energy of hundreds of other Halo fans all cheering when a sick play was made. It was definitely the highlight of my weekend and a memory I hope to never forget.

All in all PAX East 2015 was a rousing success. There were a lot of other things I did that didn't make it above, like Elite Dangerous with Oculus Rift, a bunch of indie games, the Harmonix party, and good times with friends. If you're a fan of gaming, I definitely recommend making it to a PAX event at some point, as they're second to none.

Toy Fair, 2015, LEGO

I'm sitting on the train after Toy Fair, going through all the pictures I took, and figured I should ask everyone's input as to what we should focus on for our coverage. Bionicle will obviously be first up, but what comes after that? Cast your vote here to let us know what you're most looking forward to!

Additionally, we're considering posting our pictures on Flickr as we have been for our convention coverage (see our BrickFair Alabama wrapup for an example). Would you prefer that or our 'classic' style (like last year's Hero Factory coverage)? Let us know!
