Merlin

Posted by The Inquisitive Automaton , Feb 05 2013 · 101 views

Having steadily grown more and more interested in the Arthurian legends of old, I've started considering going back to pick up the BBC's TV series Merlin, if only to see how it really did compare to the actual mythology.

Then I remember why I stopped watching it in the first place and have to drink some brain bleach to forget the awfulness of it all.

Good thing they cancelled it, then. We can only hope they cancel Sherlock's fandom next.

Unfortunately, there's no "real" Arthurian canon. Things changed a lot in the mythology of Arthur and Camelot, and there is no single version that is definitive.

I know it's vastly different from conventional tales of Arthur... but I like it. :(

Having not watched Series 2 yet, I've been going out of my way to avoid the fanbase. I'm glad to hear I haven't been missing anything in particular.

Oh yeah, there is that. I guess what I meant was...Uh...I don't know, I wrote the blog entry when I was tired. I suppose I just meant seeing how it holds up to the most common recurrences? Egh, who knows.

STOP LIKING WHAT I DON'T LIKE!

Nah, I can understand that you might enjoy it. I guess the problem was my expectations when I went into it. I was expecting some dramatic coming of age story that handles the mythology with respect, when it was in fact a cheesy, family friendly romp. Not really my thing.

Since I'm allegedly writing Arthurian tragedy, I've been doing a lot of reading. Here are some pointers:

Read Le Morte D'Arthur and The Once and Future King; they're great. D'Arthur is this fantastic blend of hilariously dated genre-writing and genuinely masterful storytelling, while the latter is written by T.S. Elliot.

Idyllis for a King is pretty, but also incredibly sexist. The main theme is "women are evil and can only be good by distancing themselves from their woman-ness".

I have a young adult book called Parsifal's Page on my bookshelf which is actually quite a clever little retelling of Parsifal's introduction to Camelot and the Grail myth.

One day I'll be able to get through the original Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. One day...

Thanks for the suggestion, man. I was in the process of placing a moderate sized Amazon order for college texts as it was so I decided that I might as well throw Le Morte D'Arthur into the bunch while I was at it. I'll probably look into getting some of the others at another time while I'm at it.

Also, I wish you the best of luck on your writing, by the way. It's certainly an encouraging sight to see how much extensive research you're doing on the subject. :P
