My two cents on the impending blogosphere wave
Anyways, my two cents. Can't we all agree to respect people based on how they act, not how they're born? If you respect all people greatly, good for you. If you respect no one, well, you're a cynic, but that's fine by me. Respect should be given because the person deserves it; if you feel all people deserve some respect, good for you. But why must we continue saying that some people are born with more respect?
I don't have much against chivalry, don't get me wrong. I view it as archaic and without a place in the modern world, but I'm not here to tell people to stop being nice. I just think being nice more equally would benefit the world a whole lot more than being nice half the time. Hence why I open doors for everyone, not just for the female side of humanity.
I'm not giving my coat to anyone though. It's bloody cold down here, if they're walking around without a coat, male or female, they're just daft and it'll be a good learning experience.

My moto is to give everybody my respect until they prove to me that they don't deserve it. Sometimes they can prove they don't deserve it real quickly, other times maybe they prove that they deserve more. But the bottom line is to try and be nice to most people, and is that really that hard to do?
(I think I'm agreeing with you here, although with all these long winded arguments going around, I can't be too sure who's argueing for what.
