Gentlemen, behold: Helryx

helryx.png

"Described as looking frail and battle-scarred, she's possibly one of the most powerful Toa in the universe, with unparalleled control over her element honed over many thousands of years."

I was going for a bio-mechanical appearance, but tried to avoid the movie style, with its exposed(!) muscles and the weird fleshy-looking masks that some characters had. She also ended up looking somewhat like a Toa Mata, with asymmetrical arms, two-fingered hands, and a similar torso structure.

Wow! Seriously, I love this! I could totally imagine this as a picture of modern art hanging in my house. :D I love the style you aimed for, not only for color but also for the character design. This is what BIONICLE characters should officially look like. ^_^-Gata signoff.png

Very cool. The style somewhat reminds me of the Flash art used in the first few years of BIONICLE's run, and the way you translated the set-wise Mata body into a more "realistic" form looks nice. The mask and gear looks simple and functional, exactly how I like it.

I wish there was a favourite button here on BZP too. Though she is a bit pixelly, I definitely dig your design. Well delivered and well designed. I kinda feel jelaous now. C:

Oh man, I really like this. It's almost like a cross between BIONICLE and Hero Factory, style-wise ... I could truly see this as a set, complete with new molds. The lower arms seem radically different from each other ... I take it that it's because of the angle there and not a stylistic choice?

Man, this is awesome. I love the soft lines and coloring. Makes her seem almost like a paper cut-out. I like the subtle wear on her armor, which really adds a lot to her ancient appearance. I like how she evokes the classic Gali color scheme, with blue armor and yellow eyes. With the dramatic pose and column of water in the background, she really lives up to her legendary title.

Great work.

The asymmetry was intentional; she was supposed to slightly resemble a Toa Mata (The ones with single tools, such as Lewa, Kopaka, and Tahu). I also had the idea in my head that 'created' Toa (like the Mata, Orde, and presumably most of Lesovikk's team), were intended by the Great Beings/Artakha to use certain tools, and their armor would reflect that. But I can see how it looks kind of odd, now.

I actually wasn't consciously trying to evoke the flash stuff, until midway through when I looked at it and went 'wait a minute...'. Funny how that works out.

Thank you to everyone who has replied so far.

Our Lady of Awesomesauce! This is amazing. I keep looking at it and going "... wow she looks spindly" and then I remember how Helryx is described and... yeah, this is awesome.

My only complaint is that the battering on her armor doesn't seem quite pronounced enough, like the colors aren't pronounced enough for the gashes and scrapes to jump out as there for me. That and her mask looks really weird. The composition is awesome, though, and I like the touch with having her mace and shield visible on her back, so... awesome. Helryx is awesome, and this image shows that.

I write stories, on occasion. Finishing them... yeah, uh. That's another thing entirely.

Avatar made with the Rayg Kit 2.5, and featuring Lilak, Toa of Lightning.

She is totally, totally not a shameless self-insert. Y'know, except for the part where she is. :D

Thank you. I feel like I could have done a few things better on this one, namely the damage to her armor, but I didn't want to make the scratches and dents too obvious, as they would've made the design a little too cluttered. That, and any major damage acquired over the years would have been repaired.

Fantastic work. I legitimately think you should show this to Greg to try to get this canonized! :) It really does evoke the feeling of the Flash animations, but at the same time the pixelated edges and shading make it feel unique. The asymmetrical arms are a nice touch, too. The only complaint I can really think of is the mace; it isn't quite as I pictured it, but you've still managed to create a weapon that's cool in its own right.

Also, if I may ask: what program did you use to make this? It's certainly reminiscent of the Flash animations, but given how pixelated it is I doubt that's what you made it with.

Awesome, I love that style. It looks like a great mix of MNOLG and a kind of ancient look that would go so well with early Bionicle. The detail looks great, especially that water. I'm also going to head-canon that mask design. May even 3D print it. :D

She could look a little more female, and the two fingered hands look a little weird, but that's just nitpicking. I'm actually just really jealous that you can actually picture Helryx in an awesome way.

Congrats on being featured, you deserve it.

Thank you! The design of her mace was based on a Pernach, a type of flanged mace. I considered some more robust, spikier designs, but none of them really looked right strung across her back. The program used was paint.NET, with a rough sketch as a base.

Also, showing this to Greg might be problematic, as I thought he couldn't really communicate much with BZP anymore?

I'd never seen a pernach before; they're interesting-looking weapons.

Actually, he's answering questions on LEGO.com here. He's already canonized some things, like the traits for Ba, Su, Bo, and Fa-Matoran and that Skakdi of secondary elements do in fact exist, so if there was enough support in BZPower he might consider this. :) Of course, it was just an idea and there's need to if you don't want to, but if nothing else I'm certainly using this for my headcanon. :P

This is fantastic! I absolutely love the art style!

I assume you wouldn't mind if people drew your interpretation of Helryx in different styles and such, but I'm asking first just in case.

No, I don't mind at all. She's LEGO/Greg's character, after all. I just drew what I thought she looked like. ^_^

Excellent drawing! Looks to be like a mix of a glatorian, mata, and some elements of hero factory.

You should really make some more!

I have designs for a bunch of different characters already. A Bone Hunter w/ Rock Steed, Tuma, and Umbra, to name a few. Might draw a Hero or two, I don't know.

Amazing job of the First Toa, i do like the mask and how you made it like the Toa Mata. The color fit really well with it and the arm and legs are really good.

I really like the mask. It looks just right, something I can easily see being part of a real Bionicle set. I also appreciate the Mata-style as well (arms, feet, etc). The chest kinda reminds me of the Metru chest plates from the movies, but again, it looks like it belongs.

Awesome job.

The asymmetrical arms look great on her. I like how that can tie in with the Mata. What strikes me the most is the legs you made. The way the armor is drawn for the knee and lower shin armor really catches my attention and is a great design

You did so much right here, but (to me) the composition has to be the most impressive.

The water perfectly draws attention to the mask, which in it's turn perfectly draws attention to the eyes. Her stance is spot on, the asymmetry in the arms is surprisingly effective, and don't get me started on the knees.

I'm in awe.

Sir, I commend you. :P
