Welcome to the Q&A Proto Energy Topic
Proto energy is BZPower's variation on the warn system that is standard on most forums. It is merit/demerit system, a way to recognize the hard work of members and to punish those that do not follow the rules. For more information, view the Reference Desk topic on Proto Energy.
Other than purchasing Premier Membership, there is no guaranteed way to earn Proto.
If there was a guaranteed way to get a Proto Energy (PE) boost - don't you think everyone would do it until they were full? But you see only a small group of regular members that have a full PE bar.
If you are doing things ONLY to get PE, however, you will never get it. We can tell if you are helping out only to try to get a boost; trust us - it's easy to spot. In addition, asking for Proto Energy isn't going to get you any, so please do not approach the moderators and administrators about it.
Now, you may be asking yourself what's the point of helping out, then? Well, there are plenty of reasons.
- First, you CAN get PE boosts if you show a truly helpful attitude.
- Second, a history of helping around the forums is one of the things we look for when promoting staff members.
- Plus, it is quite the courteous action. I am sure that you have needed help at some point, most likely in your earlier days. It would have felt pretty bad not to have gotten any help when you asked for it. Think of helping out, then, as giving back!

ANSWERS
NEW! THE NEW WARNING SYSTEM
Why are my warning points no longer displayed?
A recent board upgrade removed the ability for members to have negative warning points. As such, the staff had to recalibrate the numbers corresponding to the various Proto levels in order to keep the Proto system in place. So as not to confuse members with the changes, the "warning points" link is no longer displayed in profiles and elsewhere. This means, unfortunately, that members cannot access their own warn logs and history. It is recommended, therefore, that you copy the reason for any Proto changes you receive on the acknowledgement page (see below) and make note of the staff member who gave the warning so that you can contact him or her with questions.
See this topic for more information.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was below half Proto, and now I'm at neutral again. Why?
The board upgrade mentioned above made it impossible for members to have negative warning points, which corresponded to Proto levels below half. As a result, all members below neutral Proto got reset to 0 warning points, or the neutral PE level. The Administration has decided not to go and change the PE levels of those affected; "consider it a clean slate," as Black Six said here.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why can't I post after my Proto level is changed?
After your Proto level is changed, you must acknowledge the change. This is a feature designed to ensure that members know why they receive warnings; because your warning level is changed as a reward on BZPower, you have to acknowledge Proto boosts as well as Proto drains. You can access the acknowledgement page by clicking the reply button at the top of a topic or the button in blogs' comment boxes or through a link provided in the quick reply area.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PROTO ENERGY BASICS
How many Proto points are there, and where does it start? How can you see how much you have?
There are eleven positions (-5 to +5), and everyone starts at 0, which is in the middle.
To see how much you have, go to your profile. Beneath your profile picture is the number of proto (warning) points you have. This information is also above your proto bar in topics, and beneath your username in blog comments.
Also, you use these as a reference: [ -5 | -4 | -3 | -2 | -1 | 0/Neutral PE | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 ]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is at each end of the bar?
When it's empty, your posting privileges are suspended; when it's full, you become an Outstanding BZP Citizen (OBZPC) and recieve the benefits of that group, which are a spiffy orange name, having to wait only 30 days in between name changes, and of course the pride that comes with it, and the respect of BZPower's members.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Who gives the boosts?
Administrators, Global Moderators, and Forum Leaders (within their forums) can boost or reduce your PE.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Can Forum Leaders give themselves Proto?
Forum Leaders are awarded with full Proto when they are promoted if they are not already full. Forum Leaders can be subject to Proto drops; however, if the Admins have a problem with their performance, they will most likely sort out the problem with the staff member without reducing his or her PE.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How do you know if your Proto has changed?
You will usually get a PM from the person who modified it, or the reason will be edited into the offending post or topic (if it was a topic-related reason). You may also choose to receive an automatic notification of Proto modifications in your notification settings. In addition, you will be unable to create new content in the forums or in the blogs until you acknowledge the change; attempting to do so will bring you to the acknowledgement page.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
YOUR LOSS IS NO ONE'S GAIN
What are the ways to get your Proto lowered?
PE may be decreased for things such as (but not limited to):
- Flaming of any kind
- Excessive spamming
- Violations of BZPower's Forum Rules & Guidelines
- Disrespecting the staff or any other member.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Can you lose PE because you accidentally revived a topic?
Short answer: Not really. Long answer: It's up to the Forum Leader of the forum, but it's highly unlikely. As long as you aren't constantly reviving topics, you aren't likely to be punished.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you lose PE for criticizing others' work?
It depends. If your criticism is harsh and hurtful to the creators of art/fiction/MOC, you could very well lose PE, for it might count as flaming.
On the other hand, constructive reviews that can provide useful tips and point out some aspects that need work, while also stressing the good points, are always welcome and encouraged. Consistently posting substantial and well thought-out reviews might even earn you a Proto point!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Does PE, in any way, affect whether someone gets banned or suspended?
Administrators will review losses in Proto energy and decide if further administrative action is needed.
Also, contrary to popular belief, Forum Leaders may suspend members without removing all of their Proto energy, if the circumstances require it. You are also suspended if you are dropped past the -5 PE limit.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you become unsuspended and lose PE again, do you become suspended again?
If it is clear that your suspension has not taught you anything, further administrative action may be taken.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NEWS
Don't we get a Proto boost for sending in news?
Not necessarily; it depends. If it does not make the front page, you do not get a boost. If it is an exclusive tip, as in something out of the ordinary, and you are listed individually as a source, you just might.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Can you go from -5 to +5 just by sending in news?
Yes, it is possible.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PREMIER MEMBERSHIP
Do you get a boost for Premier Membership?
Yes, as stated in the Reference Desk Premier Membership Topic. You actually get two points of Proto!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When you are no longer Premier, does the Proto disappear?
No, Proto only goes down as punishment. You're not being punished if your Premier Membership runs out and you don't renew, so your Proto won't be affected when the time runs out.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Does my PE go up if I renew my Premier Membership?
Yes. However, if you are not at full Proto after a Lifetime Premier Membership purchase, you cannot receive any more from sending in an additional donation.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Isn't becoming Premier the same as buying PE?
Technically, yes. There is no arguing that. But, "buying Proto" isn't a cheap way of earning Proto, not with Premier prices these days.
Think about it, though; you are giving your own money to BZP as a donation, which is quite the boon to the Admins. Donating money can be just as thoughtful as reporting topics.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HELPING OUT AROUND THE "HOUSE"
Is helping someone the only way to earn PE?
No, but it is a very recommended way to get PE.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you gain any Proto for reporting posts, topics, sigs, anything?
Yes! Sending in lots of valid reports is an excellent way to get noticed by the forum staff.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Are rewards for advertising Proto and post boosts?
Yes and no. Normally you are rewarded with only posts, but if you keep giving many, many reports, then you might get lucky.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THINGS YOU MAY WANT TO KNOW BUT ARE AFRAID TO ASK
Can you refer someone for a Proto Boost?
If you feel someone has helped out enough to be acknowledged, you can make a Forum Leader aware of it. But that doesn't mean that the member is guaranteed to receive a PE boost. Those decisions are made by the appropriate Forum staff and Admins themselves, at their discretion.
And, contrary to some rumor, these recommendations are often taken seriously. I know cases where members have been rewarded after being pointed out for a boost. Please do not abuse the system, though - we'll know if the member deserves one or not; don't think you and your friends will be able to get each other's Proto boosted up just because you start recommending each other. You're more than likely get Proto removed if you try to cheat the system.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Could somebody make a chart on how much PE you get for certain stuff?
No, because there is no guaranteed way to gain Proto, besides purchasing Premier Membership. The Admins, Global Moderators, and Forum Leaders make these decisions on a case-by-case basis, so a chart wouldn't be possible.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How are there normal members with full PE?
Their accounts need to be modified manually by the administrators; if you have full PE, or you see another member with full Proto, but they've not been upgraded to OBZPC yet, you should PM a Forum Assistant with a link to your/their profile. The account should be upgraded within a few days.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you need full PE to become a staff member?
Nope. It's just that once you become a staff member your PE is automatically upped to full. And just in case you don't know how to increase your chances of becoming a staff member, please see this topic in the Reference Desk or the Official Staff Positions Topic.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you have a question about the PE system, please feel free to post it in this topic, but please make sure that it has not been answered in the post above. Any question not related to Proto Energy should be searched for in the Compendium. If you cannot find your answer in there, feel free to start a new topic in this forum!
