Hello citizens of BZP. I'm pickle962 or P962 for short. I've been a fan of bionicle for most of my life and in early 2009 started making a manga based off the early years of bionicle simply called Bionicle Manga. For my birthday this year, I got Manga studio and have been busy "remixing" the pages of BM and uploading them to my DA account afterwards.(As well as my Brickshelf account) I'd like to hear what y'all think of BM, so don't be afraid to state your opinion on my fan made doujinshi :sigh: Of course, all standard forum rules still apply in addition to the rules here in this part of the forums, so no vulgar language, rudeness, etc. Also, one more thing. Like I said earlier, I started BM in early 2009 and my art style has changed alot since then. Plus, It took me days to grasp the basics of Manga Studio, so I just thought I'd go ahead and give y'all a heads up. Well I'll be darn...Looks like I finally have a page for BM on BZPower Comics Wikia...http://bzpcomics.wik.../Bionicle_Manga

That would be because you are the account owner -- to anyone else, those files are not yet public. You can circumvent this, however, by clicking on the image until it has the white background and the URL ends with ".jpg" [or some variation thereof]. That way, you are directly linking to the image itself, rather than to a part of the gallery which is not public. You can take a look at the Pictures Topic if you need more help with pictures.

No, you misunderstand, you're linking to this. You need to link to this.

It's called deep-linking, all you have to do is click on the picture and link to the new address.

I didn't read anything, though I may read it later. I don't know.

THIS IS EMPTY! BOO-YAH! I'M A DRAGON!

I'm sorry, P962...

All of the characters lack noticable articulation in their movements - only appearing via a frontal view, with maybe some rigid limb movement - and that's even before you take into account how Bionicle characters can't be represented by human facsimilies without fudging something up. I mean, please don't take this the wrong way, but they all look like hipsters, wearing glasses and strange hairstyles that don't physically match their head.

As a note to help you improve, you could make the human facsimilies look like their counterpart - for an example, Kopaka could have had a monocle, Tahu could have had a monobrow, Pohatu's overweight, etc.

I appreciate how this may have taken you a considerable effort, and not only do I believe that practice makes perfect, but I also commend you for not relying on the crutch of pixels that is typically used. But the fact that you made this a couple years ago certainly shows.

Please don't take anything of this personally. It's not you, it's the comics. I have been a notourious reviewer to other people in the past as well.

You may be a notorious reviewer, but this crossed the line

Finally! As seen in today's update, Chapter 2 of BM is finished! Now it's time to move on to Chapter Three which will cover the Toa Mata retrieving their remaining Kanohi masks. If you've read BM up until now, be sure to tell me what you think.

Interesting. I'm not going to say anything on the topic of the actual art- In my expericence it improves over time with or without critique, as long as you're determined to improve.

Sighhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Don't take any of the following too personally. It's going to sound cruel and blunt but I will try to tone it down. Believe me when I say I really want to see you improve. Hand drawn comics are rare here and heaven forbid that I discourage one of them from continuing. I just don't know how to say this:

Your editing is seriously lacking and I don't see any excuse for it to be as low-grade as it is. You mentioned that you take a picture with your camera. This is highly unrecommended. It looks like you're taking it in a poorly-lit room with the flash off and no tripod. If you're going to keep with this method (I assume that you don't have a scanner. If you do, please use it.) I suggest putting some form of white light on or near the page. Sunlight and/or fluorescent bulbs will do. While I recommend leaving the flash off, if you don't have some way to stabilize the camera it will end up blurred, no matter how much work you put into retracing the lines. I strongly suggest you invest in a tripod if there's no other viable option. A stack of books will do as well. If your camera has a timer I recommend setting the camera in a stable position relative to the page and then stepping away. This should make the image clearer. As far as dialogue, I recommend editing it in afterwards with the computer's text or retracing it with a dull pencil to make it bold. It's completely unreadable as is and I get the feeling I'm missing out on some important stuff.

Also, panel spacing. This is a common mistake and one I made as well when starting out drawing comics. You draw lines to separate the images, but you're neglecting to put space between the lines. When the borders between panels are next to each other it feels claustrophobic and it's difficult to prevent a drawing on one page from crossing over into the next. If you draw the panels separately and leave roughly 1/4 of an inch between each, it allows the reader's eyes to focus on what happening in each frame separately. Otherwise it blends together and looks like one big amalgamation of faces with lines randomly drawn between.

Minor nitpick: Please scale down the image a bit. When it shows up in my browser it's too small to see details, and when I zoom in it's too large to get the full picture.

please please please don't draw on notebook paper. it looks cheap, unprofessional, and distracting at best. Either edit out all the blue lines before posting or just draw on printer paper.

I'll leave the criticism at that for now. I like your character designs, the hair is unusual but it gives them a unique feel. Kopaka is cool no matter how you lok at it. I'm glad to see your art improving as well as the fact that you've ditched whatever program you were using to edit in the first chapter. The character's movements have improved as well. They've become more dynamic and versatile and really allows your characters to show their personalities.

Gahh, I hope that wasn't too heavy handed. I really don't mean to discourage you, there's a lot of potential here and I know that if you keep at it you're going to be one of BZPower's top artists someday. There's just a lot you could do to make this comic so much better if you took a little more time with each page and put a little more thought into each panel.

Hand-drawn comics are but tiny islands in the vast sea of pixels and vectors that is Artwork III. It's good to see a fellow paladin of graphite here and I hope you'll continue your quest. These comics rarely get as much attention as they deserve, so don't get too down about a lack of feedback.

Keep up the good work. I hope to see you around.

Thanks for the "review" man :) Glad to know I'm not the only artist out there who hand draws comics. Anyway boys and girls, I've taken pictures of the pages for chapter four I have completed, but for some reason, brickshelf seems to be having problems, so it may take a while before I can update BM

Haha, I definitely enjoyed reading that last chapter. Your character's personalities are unique and distinct as ever, and their attire makes them easy to distinguish at a glance. Kopaka and Onua are still my favorite as always.

Kopaka's first line on page 69 made me laugh out loud. Nice reference.

I still had a bit of trouble reading the dialogue. Try writing it in before you put speech bubbles in; that way it won't be as constricted. And don't worry about covering up parts of your character or scenery if you have to. I know of plenty professional comics artists that do it and it doesn't detract from the art or story.
Also, I'd avoid drawing on both sides of the page if I were you, especially if you plan on using notebook paper. I can see the adjacent page through the back and it's a bit distracting. (Really, that's a minor gripe, but I thought I'd bring it up because I can't find anything else to criticize. :P)

Keep up the good work! I look forward to reading more! :)

Though it was time for an update. If you'll head over to the stuff section, Kakaru of Nathan8472's Banner Shop: A hand-drawn comic drew a guest strip involving Tahu and Pohatu playing some kohlii. More concept art as well as page 8 of Chapter Four will be coming soon. I've just been busy with other things for i do have a life believe it or not :P

I gotta say, i love how your drawings improved from chapter 1 to chapter 4! It's actually a great way of telling the bionicles story, i also plan on making a hand drawn bionicle manga someday, but not as humans, just as normal bionicles. :P But anyways, there were some times where it was kinda hard for me to know which panel comes next. And i think I agree with Kakaru, you should make spacing between panels, it just makes it neater usually, and you should do what you did in the first 2 chapters kinda, like edit the speach bubbles on an editing program, because i had some hard times reading the dialogue. Also, just try and spend more time editing the pictures on a program, and it'll look much more easier to read and fantastic! And you should use blank white printer paper, makes it more, well i guess how Kakaru said, "professional". Just more editing, and i hope to see your future pages and chapters to be AWSOME! I gotta say, when i look at your newer and better work, it inspires me to make my own comic soon. But, its a goal of mine to make a bionicle comic someday, hand-drawn comic.

As promised the next page of BM has been uploaded. I apologize in advance if you can't read some of the dialogue. I tried remedying the problem in Manga studio, but something must have went awry along the way... here's what's going on in page 8 :)

Lewa: Ooh, I can't wait to see what new powers this new mask has!
(Lewa puts on the golden kanohi)
Lewa: Whoah! that surge was intense! Felt amazing in fact!
Pohatu: Oh yeah! I'm feeling loads stronger already!
Gali: Seems like we can also use all six mask powers in additon to the power boost...
(Tahu notices the thing where the toa put their hard earned mask of powers into and in return received their golden kanohi disappear)
Tahu: Okay...what is with this hole?

Ooh, intrigue!

Thanks for putting the translation in, haha. If all else fails, you may want to try erasing the hand-written text and putting it in manually with some image editing software.

Also, you might want to include the links to updates and new concept art in the post you make announcing them. It's a little difficult to sort through the art and comics to find new ones otherwise. (Alternatively, put a little blurb like [New!] next to updated links and remove them as new ones come in. Just a thought.)

I really like where this is going. I haven't read the official comics in years so I really don't remember where this is going. Looking forward to more! :D

Please, go the extra mile to write legibly, draw on white paper, ink, and scan. Digital color may be nice but not necessary.

You might also be bothered to read the few replies this topic has received to realize that those issues have already been covered and acknowledged by the author. Whether or not he chooses to do so is his business, but your reply doesn't offer him any more practical advice. He may not have a scanner or the proper paper, and ink would bleed on the paper he's using, marring the images he creates on the opposite side to save resources.

Also, since my previous suggestion, he has been providing translations for the illegible speech bubbles. It's not a perfect solution, but at least he's making the effort.

Nobody can claim to know exactly why another member chooses to create comics the way he does. I'm sure he has his reasons.

Thanks for the advice Kakaru and Kv195 :) Anyway, page nine of chapter four is done. I think this one turned out good especially since i've been incorporating the advice i've been given to help make the comic better.

Woah, excellent! The spacing between panels definitely helps, the images are nice and clean, and the text is definitely easier to read, which makes the entire comic flow far easier. (Oh, and the arm-waving effect in panel 5 was a stroke of genius. It's a bloody clever trick that really adds a sense of motion that hadn't even occurred to me. :D )

Once again, I'm simply stunned at the rate your comic is improving, and with your absolute determination to keep it running. I don't know that I mentioned this before, but seeing your comic was actually what inspired me to start my own series in the first place. Before that it was just another thought in my head that would have probably never seen the light of day.

I'm glad to see my suggestions helped, and as always, I'll be watching in anticipation of the next update!
