The popular Pick-A-Brick section of LEGO Shop at Home has been updated with a number of new elements, including some from Hero Factory sets. The update has also removed Hero Factory parts not appearing in the current set lineup. Presumably these changes will soon be reflected in the parts available for Recon Team custom builds, so fans interested in old-style heads should order now; otherwise, browse the online Pick-A-Brick wall.

Too bad they're removing the old parts. I'm sure there's still a market for them.

Something that has to be kept in mind is that Pick-A-Brick orders are hand-packed, just like Design byME and Hero Recon Team orders were. This is a complex process (that's part of the reason why Design byME did not prove economical in the long run), and the more parts are on the palette, the more complex (and thus, costly) it is. Only so many new parts can be added without older parts being taken away.

Additionally, it's probably costly to keep certain older parts in production when they're no longer appearing in sets.

Still, it's basically LEGO saying "hey, we're never going to make these parts again." They don't seem to exhibit any intention of re-utilizing the molds in the future, and they could. Heck, it's not like the system's incompatible.

And Bionicle got like 5 parts before in this. Shameful, Lego. :talk2hand:

They're not saying they're never going to make them again. It's not like LEGO is throwing away the molds. The designers had no need for those pieces in the 2012 sets so they're no longer available. Maybe we'll see them again in 2013.

Remember how one preliminary name for BIONICLE was "Bone Heads of Voodoo Island?" You see that referenced in a lot of 2001 BIONICLE part names. Tahu's weapon is "Voodoo Flame", Kopaka's is "Voodoo Sword", Pohatu's is "Voodoo Spur," etc. The Hau is just "Voodoo Mask, Tahu (4-CR)".

Good to see the new parts are online, bad to see the old are gone. However, I am sure they can still be ordered via phone, although that will probably only be possible while the supplies last.

Well, replacement parts for broken, lost, missing, or defective parts aren't really affected by this-- for those, you can still use the LEGO replacement parts service whether or not the items are available for individual sale on Pick-A-Brick. If a part was defective or missing from the original package, or if it broke during building, they might even replace it free-of-charge, although they may also request that you send them any broken parts so they can examine them and find out why they broke.

But if, for instance, you wanted to give back armor to some of the Hero Factory sets this year that lack it, that's something that Pick-A-Brick could be useful for. I certainly plan on possibly placing some orders for modifications I have planned for some of this year's sets.

I was under the impression that Lego has some manner of 'Vault' where they kept a bunch of old molds, which is why you see Fabuland elements creep into the system every so often.

Either way, you can't discount any piece as being 'gone'.

I, personally, would not miss most of the pieces that were removed.

I remember Lego once said they were considering adding Bionicle elements to Pick-a-Brick. It was actually mentioned in an e-mail conversation I had with LEGO a couple of years ago (the second reply mentions it).

A heads-up: that link goes to the archive, and the logging out issue has not been resolved at time of writing.

Really? Wow, I didn't know that. I'm glad we avoided that name.

There's probably a good reason the name was dropped, although it may be a slightly accurate reflection of Bionicle's early years.

All those ten-year-long franchises, they get picked apart.

While that's a bummer, you'll always be able to acquire retro parts if you browse around. I'm sure our own B/S/T forum is one such place.

Have always grooved the build-a-hero program. Wish Bionicle had had something similar. Might've kept me buying sets between 2005 and 2009.

Yeah, buying a full set in Pick-A-Brick parts isn't usually practical. Even if you're buying the same parts, there's a difference in cost between mass-producing a set on a semi-automated assembly line and packing the parts to that set by hand on an individual, on-demand basis. And that's reflected by a steep difference in price (although not as much as was the case with Design byME, which added 25% to the cost of each individual part plus a ten-dollar flat rate for each complete order). You'd probably get Breez cheaper just by ordering her from a seller overseas.

I believe Hero Recon Team can be more economical than Pick-A-Brick, depending on what parts you get, but of course that's partly because the parts you order follow a more consistent pattern, and so packing is probably far simpler. And even Hero Recon Team charges you the price of a medium-price-range set (i.e. a 2011 villain set) for a model just slightly larger than the biggest 2011 Hero sets (35 pieces versus 31).

I big part of that cost came from the new Hero Core $3.00 US!

Since Lego Pick-A-Brick are now selling the Breakout pieces...

Why isn't there a Gold, Orange, trans Green or Metallic Silver version of this piece?

It only has Black, White and Lime Green.

I hope they will add those colours in the future.
