I don't think that's his hair at all. It's probably just the gold from his hood.

Maybe what Mr. Hinkle was talking about was more of Speedorz replacing Spinjitzu, and not so much Legend of Chima sets / story replacing Ninjago sets / story. IMO the spinners have never been my favorite part of Ninjago, other than having the ability to buy cheaper sets and get cool minifigs + weapons.
