  1. The opening of the Blind Guardian song Distant Memories is the coolest thing I've heard today.

Yep! I was expecting those connections - that they go beyond those two albums, tying together what I guess could be called overarching themes in their body of work (at least from Nightfall onward) was what really impressed me.

  2. I just heard the stereo mix of Lightning Frightening for the first time. It's... the instruments sound objectively better, but there was something about the bare-bones feel of the mono mix that really fit the song, and it's weird to find out that was just an artifact of wonky mixing.

It's 100% worth it to properly hear the bass guitar though. Like, the mono mix butchered that instrument the worst, and let me tell you, prominent bass guitar is my favorite thing.

And Miracle Machine is honestly one of the best quiet Blind Guardian songs.

I'm also loving the interconnectedness of certain concepts between Blind Guardian songs and album. Like, I could seriously draw parallels between not only all of Beyond the Red Mirror and Imaginations From the Other Side, but also ties to songs from Nightfall in Middle-Earth, and, off the top of my head, an obvious thematic connection between The Throne (BtRM) and Curse My Name (At the Edge of Time).

On the plus side, if they do have it set up for e-mail notifications, anyone I message personal stuff to already knows I'm panicky and depressed, so it's not like it would be new information, just... probably kinda irritating.

  6. That song I was writing a while back? The guitar solo is garbage and needs to be entirely redone. I also need smoother transitions between sections but I kinda already knew that, I just don't know *how* to do it.

And it's even funnier because I'm in a very analytical mood, and have one piece of music to work with, plus two measures of another piece. Plenty of time, and the will to dissect things, but kind of a dearth of subjects.

Writing music on a borrowed computer, I've felt a bit like an old wizard, who *had* a spellbook, who is currently having to make do with a blank notebook. I know enough to technically make it work, but all of my favorite tricks are out of reach.

Sure, there are a lot of awful ones from back then, too, but I did some nice work once in a while. And my little collection of isolated riffs, little phrases that never found a home in a complete piece? Those are going to be so much fun.

On a related matter, I'll soon (hopefully!) be regaining access to my old compositions, on my broken computer, and boy howdy are there a few I would l o v e to hear again. I've still got one of them stuck in my head, after three years.

Meanwhile the ragtime-influenced piece I started writing at the beginning of this month is still stuck with two bars of rhythm and an honestly contemptible guitar. Strongly considering removing the guitar, which is entirely redundant to the rhythm section and couldn't be relied upon to carry the melody.

I still love the drum solo itself though. It's a nice little break from the unironic carnival vibe of the rest of the piece. The guitar solo that follows it, on the other hand, is too much of a break from this vibe - while the drum solo is still fun, the guitar solo is needlessly gloomy, choppy, and just generally a drag to listen to.

The transition from the first "chorus" section to the drum solo is p a t h e t i c

I'm in the awkward position of being in an an excellent frame of mind for analyzing a composition for flaws, but no mood whatsoever to fix them.

Also, certain sub-sections absolutely should not repeat melodic phrases, and should either be shortened, or have the melody changed to eliminate repetition - a phrase that sounded great when it first came up got kind of irritating when it came 'round again a couple of seconds later.

  15. I don't understand David Bowie fans who don't like Tin Machine.

    1. HeavyMetalSunshineSister

Like, if you don't like Bowie, I'd never expect you to like Tin Machine, and that's cool - it's music I like, but it's not for everyone. There are excellent musicians I don't like. I just genuinely do not comprehend liking David Bowie, in general - not just a specific song, or album/album grouping, but in general - and deriving no enjoyment from Tin Machine.

  16. For years, whenever I heard someone calling someone else a clod, I thought they were saying "Claude." Like... Is this an anti-French thing? do you not like manservants? What is the deal?

  17. Literally the best rhythm guitar riff I wrote for that song I started last week is probably unusable in the context of that song.

  18. With Steel/Ice pokemon, they'd better include a rival pair of a Steel/Ice Pokemon and a Fairy/Dragon Pokemon, just for the cold iron jokes.

    1. HeavyMetalSunshineSister

      HeavyMetalSunshineSister

I mean I guess you could look at the new versions of Ninetales and Sandslash as "rivals," which k i n d a makes the cold iron thing work, but I'd prefer an actual Fairy/Dragon that can only stand its ground against Steel/Ice because of some funky ability or something.

Aaaaand I screwed up one of the repeated sections and have to rewrite the main melody for it entirely. Weirdly happy about this.

  24. Four AM on a Sunday night before finals week is a really, really weird time to be thinking about internet nostalgia. I should really get a Premier Membership. So people can stop complaining about my inbox. And I can put all my random, unnecessary thoughts in a blog.

I'm gonna be honest, I find it way more entertaining to put my most pointless thoughts into *this* medium than to go a l l t h e w a y to my blog and type up a new entry.
