I want to recolor a Kaukau. However, I don't know how to keep it translucent. Any ideas???

I am new to Bionicle, and from the very little I know, I am interested in the original storyline. However, I have no idea how to really expeirnce it without reading in some wiki or something. Can anyone tell me where do I start? THANKS IN ADVANCE!
