Oh Get Over Yourself

I've met autistics. We're not as related as people say. This merger is just a bunch of NTs saying "Hmm, they both aren't social. Let's clump them together!"Go ahead and call the American Psychological Association "a bunch of NTs"* if you like, but an organizing body and forum for the great majority of the psychiatric practitioners in the US, as well as many others from other countries, tends to know what it's doing. If anyone knows what they're doing, it'd have to be them. And the DSM-V committee wouldn't make a move like this unless the majority of the world's psychologists would agree and abide (and psychological academia thrives on inner conflict anyway). Asperger's is autism without the speech difficulties. That's literally it. Even right now, the DSM-IV symptoms for Asperger's are literally just the Autistic Disorder symptoms with the speech part removed. Classifying it as its own disorder, with its own name, has caused a lot of misconceptions about what exactly it IS. Basically anyone can have "mild Asperger's," since so few people know what the criteria really ARE. I'm totally in favor of the change, largely because it means the general public will take the disorder more seriously. It's lost a lot of meaning, socially, being used as a general term for "awkward person." * Psychologists are, more often than not, in treatment themselves for one or more disorder. Almost all clinical practitioners are required to go to regular therapy sessions. Psychology is one of the least NT professions out there.

So what does everyone think about the upcoming DSM-V officially doing away with Asperger's as a diagnosis and classifying its symptoms under High-Functioning Autism?

Interesting movie...rather light on the plot, though. Makes me wonder what non-movie story there could have been... When you say Tera is an Earth Glatorian, what do you mean? Is he supposed to be from the Rock Tribe? Sand? Iron? Some new tribe? Does this mean the Element Lords were planned as 2010 sets? What happened to the Skrall at the end? So the vague 2011 set plan was "dinosaurs"?

Saiph, I understand how autism and Asperger's work. I study it, and I work with kids and adults who have it. I understand that people with autism can act in ways that are socially unacceptable because of how they think. This is perfectly natural, and totally forgivable. But it's not excusable. Plenty of people with autism can lead normal, happy lives. Kraggh is obviously one of those people. This means that he has an obligation to try to work and understand people, same as how everyone has an obligation to work to understand him. This means you can't say "it's okay because he has autism." Kraggh is clearly an intelligent person. He CAN try and understand people. This means he SHOULD. Social faux pas are understandable. Obsessive behavior is understandable. This doesn't make it okay to actually do so. Kraggh is a person obsessing over another person. He needs to stop. I get why he's doing it, and I get why it's hard to stop. I'm totally sympathetic to this. But he needs to at least try and stop, because it's unhealthy. You can't excuse socially unacceptable behavior with "because he's autistic." Kraggh deserves sympathy and support, but he also needs to try and understand what other people want, not just what he wants them to want.

I think that's kind of implied. Toa of Water are referred to as "blue," but we know they can be light blue, dark blue, medium blue, and even green or white.

Here's a question: would it be possible for a Toa of Psionics to absorb thought, "blanking out" the mind of her opponent and making it harder to think?
