Heya! It's been a while, huh?

January marked my 4 year anniversary here at LEGO. It doesn't feel like that long at all. Everything is still awesome and so the list grows:

    60222 - Snow Groomer

This one is very dear to me. When I was a kid, my family would often go skiing for the winter holidays and inevitably, I would try to build the snow groomers I saw out on the slopes once we got back home. So you can imagine the excitement when it was decided to have one in our 2019 great vehicles lineup. The design itself was straightforward, but it is always a challenge to make tracked vehicles that don't use the rubber treads for younger kids. We also decided to use the six stud shooter as a snow cannon, since we rarely get to use them in City and this was a good opportunity. I also got to use some brand new pieces for this one: Prominently the new upwards 1x1 brackets for the lights on the roof and out of sight the new Lego Movie 2 tire to help drive the tracks.

    60208 - Parachute Arrest

A police chase involving a fast jet? Sign me up! The brief was simple: Design a jet with the means to capture a crook trying to escape via parachute. Getting there was a bit more tricky. Some sort of hook was needed, but where to put it? How long does it need to be? Which shape should it have to make sure the parachute stays hooked once you catch it. And once you catch it, how do you make sure neither the model nor parachute gets damaged if it gets snagged on something like a door handle etc. How easy is it to play with in general? There was a lot of iterating needed. A police motorbike and ATV with room for both crooks round out the story. Added a bar to the back of the ATV so that can be caught via jet as well, just for good measure!

    60196 - Arctic Supply Plane

Summer 2018, the City explorer returned to the arctic. Considering how ridiculously hot that summer was here in Denmark, that's no surprise. And they found many things in the ice: Ancient frozen dragonflies, sabre-toothed cats and wooly mammoths. Problem is, how do you get them out of the ice - and once they're out: How do you get them back to the city? Designing this set was a lot of fun: using the new smilodon, making sure it and all the other small things could be loaded onto the cargo plane by gratuitous use of SNOT in the back and a new saw piece for the tracked vehicle. Speaking of tracks: The 3-wide technic ones are always a little tricky. They were designed to be driven by small gear wheels and often don't work to well on smooth surfaces. So it was time for a new approach: 61254 tires instead of using technic wheels to drive the tracks. This way, there is enough friction to ensure a smooth ride, even on smooth tables. The original idea came from back in 2015 when we were developing the volcano explorers, but it finally found a use here. It worked so well in fact, that my colleague in Star Wars used the same method on the 75217 Conveyex Transport.

    75886 - Ferrari 488 GT3 Scuderia Corsa

That's a mouthful of a name for a set but another fun one to work on. The big challenge as with every model of an actual car is to capture the icons. On the 488 there's quite a few, but the biggest one in terms of the build was the large air-intake above the rear wheels. Originally the intention was to have 1-plate thick gap and then use the new 35787 triangle tile, but then the 1x2 bows with cutout came along and as you can see the intake got a lot more prominent than a 1-plate gap. The trickiest bit on this one was actually the front bumper. It involves both sideways and upside down building and had to maintain enough ground clearance to not scrape the asphalt. What a drag that would be. My favorite small details would be the espresso machine head plates representing the support struts for the front diffusor and the 1x1 quarter tile used as rearview mirrors. We don't get to include those that often. A big shoutout to my colleague in the graphics design team who made the stickers line up really nicely on the final model.

    75887 - Porsche 919 Hybrid

I got the opportunity to help out Speed Champions with two sets for this year. This was a really exciting model to work on, since the actual car had not been revealed at the time yet, so we were among the first to get a look at it. The concept models for the 919 that we had built before were all based on previous years versions, but Porsche changed the design quite a bit for the new one, which brought about some challenges. The square road sign in combination with the new-ish 1x2 bow w. cutout recreate the aerodynamic shaping on the body. And using the classic doors and new wheel arches allowed me to build this one as low to the ground as possible. This wasn't the only Porsche I had my hands on in Speed Champions though, I helped to design the back of the 911 RSR in 75888 as well. Fun Trivia: The stickers originally had the number 1 printed on, but then Car #2 won the LeMans race, so we quickly went back in and changed it.

    60177 - Air Show Jet

Kicking off 2018 with a fast little jet. Jets are cool. The longest discussions were actually about the color scheme and stickers.

    60174 - Mountain Police Headquarters

Building a police station is a bit of a rite of passage in City so I was very excited to get asked to do it only in my 2nd year. It's an important set in the lineup and it's pretty big and gets a lot of attention from marketing, so the team has a big interest in getting this one right. The general layout with the three levels of garage/prison/office was already decided when I started on the model. The big challenge lay in how to connect those three levels in a stable way without over-complicating the build. And yes, police is a theme we do frequently because - well, there tends to be a new generation of 5 year olds every couple of years. The fun part for this one was to mix it up a little bit - most obviously with the crooks helicopter. Some fun trivia: I chose the tail-fin of that helicopter because it was also featured in Onua Mistika some ten years ago. During development I came upon the issue of using a door-frame as a structural support in the back of the station - which left a pretty big hole from the garage leading directly to the cougar's cave. That's why there is a door now with a "keep out" sticker. The graphic designer also came up with an awesome little joke with the master crook having a framed picture of his pet piranha in the cell - the same fish that the police are holding in the small aquarium in their office.

60162 - Jungle Air Drop Helicopter

This technically isn't my set, since one of my colleagues was responsible for it, but in order to meet deadlines, we tag-teamed on this one. Obviously I only did the really cool stuff in this one: The tower with the crane and the jungle ruins. But that's what's great about working in a team: Everybody gets to suggest ideas, doesn't matter if you do graphics and have a good idea for a model or if you are a model designer with a good idea for a TV spot. Which also leads to everybody being able to have a little personal touch in the sets. Fun trivia about this one: We were never quite sure what the statue outside the cave was supposed to represent, so in the end it was dubbed "Bear-Hamster".

    60138 - High Speed Chase

One of my favorites that I worked on so far. Building vehicles is fun, so to get to do three in one box was awesome! And it also marks the return of Chase McCain who's back on duty in LEGO City Undercover.

    60136 Police Starter Set

This wasn't originally my assignment but a change in the assortment happened and I was asked to take over. The idea behind the starter sets is to pack a lot of characters and story into a small box so it can be a good first set for younger kids. Very happy that the little police car could be big enough to fit both the dog or one of the captured crooks. One of my colleagues came up with the brilliant little exploding function for the ATM.

    60121 - Volcano exploration truck

My first boxed set. It was super-exciting to play around with the then-new new bar connector pieces and bull bar on the front of the truck. The biggest challenge was to figure out the correct order of the build of the rollcage.

11911 - LEGO City build your own adventure book

My first official model, though not in a box. My brief was a small firefighter's car and a scenario. This being the first model, I was surprised to find how much thought goes into something just this small. Probably had a dozen or so different variants lined up on my desk at one point of just the car. I keep some of them in a drawer still, as a reminder.

Super Excited to finally show y’all my first official LEGO Set! Our LEGO City Volcano Explorers need to go places, so they need a big truck to get there.

Worked on this for about 6 months last year. Still doesn’t feel quite real that this little thing I was brooding over on my desk is now shipping worldwide!

Much better than I feared, not as good as I'd hoped.

Major props to the art department of the film, the movie looks great and the CGI was really well-integrated. Scenes where characters and dinos were interacting in closeups looked really nice and it actually felt like an actual creature was there and getting touched, not just a green-skinned thing that was replaced later. I think some animatronics were used, but it's hard to tell.

The premise of the new bad dino is also cool, turning living creatures into products to be marketed and focus-group tested. The Raptor-Squad was a very cool idea as well, but depending on how much you're willing to suspend your disbelief, you might be disappointed or think its silly.

In the end, the moral remains the same though: Don't mess with nature. I was hoping for a Jeff Goldblum cameo and him going "How many times do I have to tell you 'I told you so'?" but no luck there.

Which is also where the downsides start: The plot is very predictable, especially if you've seen the trailers. It's pretty obvious after the first 15 minutes who will live and who is dino-grub, with one exception IMO. While the characters are likeable, especially Chris Pratt as Owen, brothers Zach & Gray and of course Dr. Wu, the rest are not quite as interesting.

Pictured: The deepest relationship in the movie.

The other thing that bothered me a bit was the comedic relief. In the end nearly every action-scene was followed up with a funny one-liner or reaction. The first movie had those scenes too, but the difference was that the characters were playing it straight and in character in that film; here it feels forced because there is just way too much of it, which takes away from the suspenseful scenes and a lot of times feels out of place considering the situation the characters are in.

Overall I really like the movie. It's a fun 2 hour adventure film, but if you prefer to wait until it comes out on DvD/stream, you're not missing anything by not seeing it in cinemas. I would rate it equal or a little higher than Lost World, definitely better than 3 but not as good as the original.

There can only be one king after all

If you haven't guessed yet - the title is a Mad Max reference. I saw it last Thursday here in Denmark and it is an amazing, amazing movie. Not in the way of breaking new ground, since it basically comes down to a 1 hour 45 minute chase, but the way Miller made his movie really shows how to do an action movie like this. Every frame is just wonderful and a little piece of art IMO. But enough gushing, I actually am working on something for myself and since it's all in LDD I can show a WIP too!

Should be done by the end of the week and then it's onto the Doof Wagon ^^ Enjoy!

    Hey y'all!

It's gotten a bit quiet here the last 2 months or so. I hadn't planned on that, but you know if you want to make the great beings laugh, just tell them your plans. Usually what gets in the way of writing a blog is the inevitable need for sleep and a number of other free-time activities, such as participation in the BZPRPG, hitting the gym and catching up on art and PC games a little. But mostly it is my tendency of staying longer at work, which leaves very little time to actually sit down, structure thoughts and write a blog entry. But I figured better now than never.

Staying longer at work though does not mean putting in overtime - not at all. It's just such a fun place to be, that I often just keep on building, drawing, chatting with other colleagues. Being hired with an AFOL background, things are a bit different for me though. Primarily, adjusting to building models not for myself, but for consumers. It's a bit of a change to not have the final say about a model's design, but it is a team effort in the end and so it was an easy change to make. The other thing is that there are many here who had no AFOL background at all when they started and for many it is still 'work' and so after 9 to 5 is over, the office empties out. Which is not a bad thing at all, I mean who isn't happy to go home at the end of the day? But for me there have been numerous instances of people being at the office until late at night, just merrily working on their own things alongside like-minded others and having a good time. And that is really the best thing about working here: Even on the busiest days, there's always time for a few jokes. Of course working with the toy you grew up with for 20 years is amazing, but no matter where you are, a healthy social environment is so, so crucial. Especially on stressful days. Stressful? Oh yes indeed, that word exists here too. Like it does in every creative company. Of course, nobody likes to have it, but when you're on a timetable and have to balance a dozen factors or easily more, it happens from time to time. Not this week though, this week is the first since I got here, where I can honestly say things feel 'slow' for me. Which is a nice change.

I have lived in Billund for four months now, but they went by crazy fast. Between training at work, actual work, getting settled in in Denmark, starting Danish lessons and the still ongoing tying-up of various insurance and tax and other paperwork-related things from Germany A lot has happened, but it doesn't really feel like it and this last weekend the beginning of May caught me a bit by surprise, but after pushing hard on my current assignment, I find myself with a bit more time to slow down and think about what's gonna happen next. Right now I am looking into buying a car so that I am not bound by bus-schedules. As much as I like public transportation, leaving a party in the wee hours of morning only to find the next bus will not arrive for another hour is no fun, so having my own set of wheels will be a definite plus. It's just very expensive to get one here, compared to other EU countries.

And that's all I have for now. Sorry for rambling on. Like I said, I find it hard just to sit down and structure my thoughts after work like this. So if you have questions, related to what's written here or just in general, please ask. I will try to answer if I can.

Cheers everybody and keep being awesome!

Hey folks, it's been a quiet few days, but settling in here and just adjusting to everything has been quite exhausting, so coming home there is little will to go on social media and such. However, today there was finally time to go through the pictures that were taken the past couple of weeks and I can show some of the things I've been working on here finally. LEGO World happened last weekend and the Wednesday before it me and a a few others from the City design team headed down to Copenhagen to help set up the display showcasing the current, upcoming and past lineup of products.

Setting up was a massive undertaking as a whole. The convention center makes Brickfair seem like a cozy family event in comparison.

Building the display was somewhat familiar in terms of crawling over under and building on tables, though there was a lot more planning involved and we had a few stressful moments too. And yes, warning vests were required attire, to prevent getting run over by a Forklift, MST3K style.

The final display after 10 hours of work.

Here is the lineup of upcoming Deep Sea Explorer Sets. My primary contribution to the display was the boxes with the underwater scenery. One of my first assignments was to design their layout and then to build it with the help and under the guidance of one of my senior colleagues. Having been Scuba diving quite a few times, no reference was needed to get a proper look.

A few pictures of the new sets. Sorry for the poor quality. There was little time to get good photos and the lighting was subpar.

    Some other snapshots:

How many Bionicle parts do you need? The answer is all of them.

The new Demolition Expert Sets. I built the damaged building to the left.

Just because there was no room for an F1 track doesn't mean there's no room for a race.

    The new upcoming Cargo Train.

The city fire department has its priorities straight.

That's it for now, more pictures next time, hopefully! Cheers!

I am currently buys helping the team with preparations for LEGO World in Copenhagen, which will start on the 12th of Febuary, (so even before NY Toy fair, for those of you hungry for news).

It's apparently a public event, so if you happen to live in or are in Denmark at the time, seems like a cool thing to check out. Also there will be a display which I had my hands on, so it will also be the first time something I built at work becomes public.

I just realized I've been working here for 3 weeks now and have probably gone through 10000 bricks or more, easily. I guess as being hired from the AFOL community, building stuff just for fun after hours as a hobby is not as common as one would think. It is a job after all, even if it's the best in the world so far. But staying a little longer and chatting with the other colleagues is great fun and it's nice to be able to chat for a few hours and exchange thoughts on designs and bounce ideas off of each other. =)

I guess that's what happens if you have a whole backlog of models only ever finished in LEGO Digital Designer and then decide to try them out as physical models. Five are done (pictures will follow in the next few weeks I hope), and two more are WIPs, including an old favourite I never got to finish before: A Minifig scale AT-AT walker. Head and feet are done already, the rest will follow.

I also noticed my BFTGM entry, Mythosix, that was withdrawn from the contest but came to work with me, keeps moving around the Bionicle design area. XD

Three weeks pass quickly. Even more so when you have so much fun at work that you start looking forward to Mondays (Crazy, right?) It's been really cold here this week in Billund and I think I saw the sun about three times in total. And this was the view (or lack thereof) on the way home from work tonight. It's just missing the sirens for that real horror game feel.

On the upside, quite a number of the new designers have banded together and organized a number of activities despite the lackluster weather. And in addition, I've been assigned my first set at work. Super exciting! Also, if things go well, there might be pictures from an upcoming presentation. I'll have to see if I can share those.

PS: Had to add a disclaimer box for legal reasons.

  10. Vezok's Friend
And thus the first week at the new job is over. I've completed my first two work assignments and am currently on my third, which I will get back to on Monday. I can't really talk about them, but it involved new sets and building some larger models of my own design for an upcoming display. I learned and saw so many things, that is really doesn't feel like only one week yet. It actually feels a bit unreal to think that last weekend I was still living in my family's house in my own room.

Now this weekend is the first in Billund. Compared to the past 5 days, there is a shocking lack of activity going on right now. Me and another colleague decided to checkout the nearby town of Veilje. It's not big, but bigger than Billund and has a beautiful old town and enough activity and options for food and entertainment that it is quite obvious why a lot of expat designers decide to move there.
Of course, my current residence has the distinct advantage of being only a stone's throw away from the employee store which I will also check out come Monday. ^^

A few small things I can share: I've got around to build some of my own designs after working hours at the office, mostly models I only had in LDD so far, so I hope I get to take photos of them soon. I also put together Smaug from the Hobbit sets to watch over the desk, which is also quite cool, those wings are really something else. And perhaps coolest in terms of builds so far: Mythosix, my villain for the Golden Mask contest which was withdrawn is now standing guard outside the Bionicle design area, so he's in good company.

More cool than that though was the opportunity to meet the other designers, many which I only knew from flickr before. Insanely talented and passionate people all around and it's really great to be able to hang out with them. The work environment in general is super-friendly and healthy. Though, if you think this is only a desk-job I can tell you there is quite a bit of walking involved. Lots of bricks means lots of shelves.

    Dear diary...EVERYTHING IS AWESOME!

...no, no, not going there ^^ Though I have seen my fair share of spaceships and hundreds of other designs today. The day started relatively early compared to my old job and got interesting immediately as I met my colleague who got hired through the same workshop I attended. We had a camera team at the workshop filming some of us for a documentary on Channel 4 on UK television and apparently they hadn't had enough yet since they accompanied us all the way to the front door at which point they were not allowed to follow anymore. Our respective mentors welcomed us and while I spent half a day with a visitor pass, I now have that little thingy saying I'm an employee. Way cool! =D

I got taken on a tour of the department and saw pretty much everything from City (which is where I work) to Ninjago to Bionicle. Oh the things I have seen and can not talk about. It will keep the frontpage busy for a looooong time ^^ The Bionicle guys heard I was a fan though, so they were super nice and gave me Kopaka, who is now master of ice and my desk until I return tomorrow, along with somebody else I might get to talk about in the future.

I didn't do much designing today yet, it was mostly learning where everything is and getting used to the work environment. I did get to put together some new sets though, which was pretty sweet.

Stayed well after work was over and got to do some free building and hung out with some of the other designers.

Let's do it again tomorrow! =D

    Happy New Year everybody!

Long time no see, eh? Even longer since I had anything to blog about. But that's about to change.

Tomorrow I'm flying to Denmark to start my new job on Tuesday. Amazing to think that in more or less 48 hours I'll be a part of the LEGO design team in Billund.

    Allons-y!

Thanks guys! I hope this blog does help us to organize these things better. Even though I've GMed a whole RPG before, running a group within the BZPRPG is something I am not 100% sure how to manage yet. So, you'll get to participate quite a bit ^^

-The horde is a mercenary fighting force mainly comprised of Skakdi members. Other species are welcome, but they have it tough and the Skakdi don't trust easily, so their respect must be earned.

-The Horde doesn't care who you are and what you've done prior to joining, except if you served Makuta. If you're a Skakdi, know how to hold something sharp and want to get back at big M, you're welcome.

-The Horde's goal is nothing less than the defeat of Makuta and his forces on the Island of Mata Nui.

-Rhow may act as the de facto leader of the group, but she's not a despot, so discussions about the course of action are quite welcome and don't shy away from asking the group to go on quests you find worthy of pursuing.

-As nice as the group is, by Skakdi standards at least, as hard they are when it comes to keeping it that way. Better watch what you are scheming, or you might call down the wrath of the group down on you.

Had the rare opportunity to see one of the few concerts legendary BÖC were ginving in Germany. Granted, I did not know all their songs before going, but I always liked their hits and they certainly delivered! Best money ever spent this year!

Probably should have brought a cowbell for Don't fear the reaper, just for fun ^^

Hey guys. Nothing new from, except more art on the way, but today I am not here to blog about anything related to me.

Crimson Jester, which all of you who ever stepped into the the BZPRPG in the past few years should know, at least by the name, has asked me to let you all know that he's currently taking some time off BZP. He lost two good friends this month, so you know why.

    Stay safe everybody.

Every once in a while Nostalgia strikes and I take a look at something that was really cool and "in" when I was about 6 years old or so. That usually involves looking at old cartoons. Often enough one finds that what was considered epic storytelling at that age is rather simple in hindsight. But sometimes you find that something that was seemingly boring at the time was actually really cool!

The next Generation was the Star Trek show I grew up with. Unfortunately, back in 90s and slightly more interested in a certain brand of plastic building-bricks, it was something that would occasionally be watched. But since the original run ended in 94 and everything after was re-runs, those instances were rare.
After all, there was Lego to be built and then there was Star Wars. And as you might guess, as a kid, I was more interested in X-Wings and lightsabers and AT-ATs (Oh Mata Nui, no sportscar will ever be as cool as an imperial walker, hands down! I DON'T CARE IF THERE'S NO PARKING SPOTS FOR AT-ATs, I WILL WALK TO WORK IN IT!)!

Star-Trek on the other hand had people in bright-coloured uniform walking around on an absolutely clean Starship discussing the possible consequences of interfering with the developent of other species. Now, that was between age 4 to 8 and it never really interested me.

That is until last month. I was stuck in bed thanks to an unhappy stomach. With nothing better to do I finally came across video-compilation of great movie-quotes. Among them the most inspirational quotes from Patrick Steward as Captain Picard.
The realisation went something like this: "That show was really cool!"

So somehow I've managed to watch the first 4 seasons again since then. I have to say the best episodes have to be those where Spiner gets on his Sherlock Holmes, or those where Steward can fully employ his classic Shakesperean acting or really steps up as an advocate for the equal rights of all living things. I am not a Trekkie by any means, but there is something very enjoyable about watching his speeches. And more importantly, they have some applicability to real life as well.

I guess some things you can only really appreciate once you're old enough to know what they were all talking about. Maybe you have something like that from your early days as well. It has nothing to do with feeling older, btw. It's just about looking back at some stuff that's ten or fifiteen years in the past, to see how it holds up today.

Now, with that said, I will return back to creating art and studying gamedesign...But first, I will need something to drink:

    Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.

Yup! Off to Scotland, specifically, Edinburgh.

I have no clue what the city will be like, none at all, but one thing is sure: It's time to learn a new English accent =D

I'll be back by monday night and I will have a laptop with me over the weekend, just don't expect me to post much.

Judging by the activity on my blog here, I'm sure that won't be a problem

    Stay safe everyone!

I have to admit, I have not made a whole Toa Team at once before. It's a little harder than expected, but a lot of fun as well to write the backstory of six Toa, rather than just one.

But it's fun to see what different inspirations can create in combination. In this case, you take Bram Stoker, add Prototype and supernatural beings and throw in some good old-fashionied Bionicle-Mystery on top. I think those of you who play will like the result.

Now, I just hope NM approves these guys once I send them to him...

    So soon? Yes indeed!

Keep your eyes open for the next few days, another character-illustration approaches!

In the meantime, a public service-announcement from Lenny the Lemon-Shark!

This is for you peeps who know my BZPRPG characters.

After the great success of the Agni piece, I took the project to the next step. All the characters currently in existance have been sketched and Kohra should be
done tonight or tomorrow, not sure how much time It'll take to finish completely.

On top of that, I've got some other sketches and new characters that I will work on as soon as I can get to them.

Stay tuned and keep an eye on Artwork I =)

    I just realized something:

I miss blogging with all you awesome folks!

So, without delaying too much, I shall refurbish this blog to finally fit in with the new forum layout, do some new funky pictures and then I'll get down with the groove, do the boogy and...

Ok, enough blabbering, I'll just get back to updating here more regularly.

See you guys in the blogsphere! =)

Hey guys. It's been way too long since I updated here.
I don't really have a reason, except that with my blogs imagery being totally out of whack since the new forums came online, I didn't want to force anybody to look at something so horribly disorganized.
Also, I simply haven't taken the time to update it...lazy me.

Anyway, life is keeping me busy. I am trying to up my drawing output but it has yet to become a steady habit that yields results every third day or so, so that's what I'm working towards this year.
    Game-design wise, we're currently involved in a movie-assignment.
The group I am part of has decided to make a short fantasy-story that tells the tale of a young man who, as a coming-of-age ritual has to go deep into the wilderness and survive whatever challenge might await him there.
It sound relative serious like that, but there's all sorts of comedic material to it, a lot of which was inspired by Monty Python and other great comedy-people.

Other than that, I am also working on some more Bionicle-related art, thinking about doing some HF art.
Also, I am open for comissions anytime, so if you need a logo or illustration, contact me via PM.

    Cheers!
