  1. Blog Reporting In the past, before the upgrades and the downtime, reporting things in the blogs was a complicated mess of PMing BlogAlert, linking the content, describing the broken rules, and hoping someone read the BlogAlert account in a timely manner. NO MORE! The "REPORT" buttons on comments and entries DO WORK. Before the downtine, they did not. Now they do! Hurray! So, in short, if you have something to report, click that button, describe the offense, and a blog staff member will receive the report and an automatic link the the offending content. (Please do not use this to report signatures) This is much easier on us, on you, the general populace, and also on kittens everywhere. -The Blog Staff
  2. With the updated software, the blogs have seen some changes, some good, a few disappointing. This entry will exist to allow you guys to familiarize yourself with the new layout. The FAQ entry below this has been updated accordingly and will serve as the de facto "how to blog" entry once the board has been back for an extended period of time. I am leaving this open, and request all questions and comments regarding the new layout go HERE and NOT in the Blog Q&A. So! NEW BLOG STUFF! New blog entry layout: The new entry layout is mostly similar. Along with the usual options for entry title and categorization, there is also a palce to add tags to your entry. These tags will appear at the bottom of an entry, while the category you put an entry in will appear at the top of the entry. How to edit/change basic blog settings: 1. Click on your username in the top right corner of the page. Open the drop down menu. 2. Click "manage blogs". 3. Click the options button. From here, you can view your blog, post a new entry, manage settings, manage categories, or manage comments. Manage settings: This allows you to change the name or description (subtitle) of your blog. It also has options for blog view permissions and a url to your blog page, but those settings are inactive. Manage categories: This allows you to make new categories for your blog entries and to see how many/what entries are listed in a category. It also gives an option to delete a category. This will NOT delete entries. Instead, it sets any entries in deleted category to "uncategorized" if this is done. Manage comments: This lets you see every comment ever on your blog in one big list. Here, you have options to approve, delete, or unapprove comments by clicking on the checked box. This option will not work if you are a nonpremier member. Content Blocks There have been some problems since the upgrades with content blocks. You'll notice you can no longer change their sizes, and there are reports where some members have the wrong content blocks after the upgrades and server change, and unfortunately we cannot fix that. You will have to change your blocks yourself, and if yours have been over-written with someone else's, unless yours appear in the drop-down "Add Block" menu, there is no way to bring yours back. Other issues we're having with the content blocks involves curious cases of content block disappearances. For some members, whenever they edit an entry/comment, or change content block settings, they will see their content blocks disappear, and the content blocks will not be listed in the aforementioned drop-down box. Because the board thinks the blocks are still there (because they are). There seems to be some patterns to the behaviour: Hides Content Blocks Moving block position Hiding a content block (red X), both custom and default Creating a new content block Deleting a custom content block Editing a custom content block Adding an entry, both published and drafted Publishing a draft entry Drafting a published entry Deleting an entry, both published or drafted Brings back blocks Adding a comment Deleting a comment Un-approving a comment Approving a comment Doesn't bring back blocks Editing a comment Reporting a comment If you experience this problem, you may let us know in this entry. However, we have submitted a bug report with IPB, have not heard back, and have found nothing to remedy the situation, so if you are one of the unlucky members, we are sorry, but there is nothing, as of now, we can do to fix this problem. We hope that if we're patient a fix will present itself. Update: As of Dec. 4th, 2012, this problem has been fixed. Content blocks should no longer disappear unexpectedly. Thanks for your patience, your support, and enjoy blogging on BZPower once again! We're excited to have you back!!

    Blog Rules

BLOG RULES & GUIDELINES No flaming or cursing. Not only does this make an unfriendly atmosphere, we also want to keep these blogs safe for members of any age. Do not bypass the word filter. Doing so shows that you are aware of the previously stated rule and deliberately breaking it. No pictures, links, or references to pornographic, sexually offensive, sexually explicit, or objectifying material. This is a serious offense that can lead to instant banning from BZPower. Do not discuss banned members. They were banned for a reason and discussion of them or why they were banned is prohibited. There are to be no RPGs in the blogs. Allowing them would be against BZPower rules about unapproved RPGs. Do not post using chatspeak or leet. It is against the BZPower rules and has been for a while. Chain quoting, which is quoting an entry or comment without adding any content, counts as spam and is a waste of bandwidth. It is not allowed. Image-only comments are not allowed. However, comments with only a BZP-installed emote are allowed. Double commenting is not allowed, as this is an unnecessary waste of bandwidth. It should be noted that if you are the author of a blog and you make the first comment in your entry, it falls under the double commenting rule. Comment drives, where an entry exists only to increase the amount of comments in a blog, are spam and shall be locked immediately. Blog entry bumping by non-Premier members is not allowed. Blog clubs are allowed. The only condition is that you cannot exclude anyone and it falls within the general BZP rules. Invisible/blank entries or comments are not allowed, as they are a waste of bandwidth. Politics and religious discussion is banned in the blogs. Any exceptions and questions can be asked here. It is not required, but it is recommended to set your blog to "approve comments only". Use common sense and good judgement before posting a comment or new entry: if you don't think it's appropriate, don't post it. Please respect the blog staff. We are here to help keep the blogs running smoothly as well as to help you with any questions or inquiries you have. Disobeying and disregarding rules may result in a loss of proto or drafting/locking of entries until you edit out the problematic material. Posting WIP images of MOCs for BBC Forum contests will merit a disqualification from the contest. If you have any questions, please post them in the Blog Q&A entry. Remember to also read and follow the general General BZP Rules and Guidelines. Thanks! And have a wonderful times in the blogs. -The Blog Staff

There are hundreds of possibilities. Q: Do our blog themes have to be directly music, or would a music-based character (EG: G1Soundwave) count? A: Anything based around music would be acceptable. Q: My premier membership is set to run out halfway through the contest, would I still be allowed to enter my blog before then, and still have it in the competition? A: You'll be allowed to enter up until the time your PMship runs out. But afterwards you'll be unable to use your blog. Q: Does artwork made from an album's cover art count as music art? A: Yes. Q: Is it okay to enter a blog that was musically themed prior to the contest announcement? A: Yes, you can enter one that was themed prior to the contest, but since the point of the contest is to ramp up the standard in blogs, it might increase your standing to do something new. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Entrants Member Name >>> Blog Name >>> Entries 1. A: You'll be allowed to enter up until the time your PMship runs out. But afterwards you'll be unable to use your blog. Q:Can it be themed by a travel song? like if using jet airliner, theming your blog around that? A: This contest is really about places more than transportation. And though we did music last time, if you want to theme it around a place-themed song, you're welcome to do so. Q: What if you want to do places you want to go to, but can't. Like Mordor. Or Neptune. A: Let's make them real places. Q: I know it's more about places over transportation, but what about the two, like, say, places one can travel to by train? A: That'd be fine. Q: Should the blog be about 1 place only, or can it be more than one place, without necessarily a common link between the multiple places? A: Places is fine. Q: If you see someone's blog with location that you were going to do, could you still make yours? A: Of course you could still make yours. Q: So, I just post a link to my blog here? Can I edit the post later with themed entries, or should I make a new post with said entries? A: You would just edit that post. It's better if you keep all the entries in the same place for easy access. ------------------------------------------------------------------- ENTRANTS: 1. 7. Politics and Religion in the Blogs First off, we'd like to note that the religion and politics rules in the forums are very strict, whereas in the blogs, we tend to be a little loose in those areas. As such, this has presented a lot of confusion. This entry is hopefully going to clear that up. This will be left open so you can ask questions here as well. Addendum: Concerning the election and politics in general, I would suggest you keep it to who you supported and if they won or not. If an entry gets too political it will be locked. Religion: Allowed in blogs: Mentioning your religion. Mentioning religion-tied holidays Explanations of religious holidays (just don’t get too in-depth. If it starts a debate/flame war, it will be removed.)Not allowed in blogs: Bashing of other religions “This religion is better.” “You should convert to…” Anything you think might spark flame.Politics: Fine in blogs: “I support (X candidate)” "How voting works" entries (and the like)"Go out and vote" entriesNot fine in blogs: Candidate/leader bashing Discussion of major issues Anything you think might spark a debate.Just like in Completely Off Topic, there is nothing wrong with discussing politics and reigion with your friends or in small groups. It is good to go out and get information on these matters. Unfortunately in the past, allowing discussion here have led to flame wars. And instead of allowing hatred and misinformation to fester, we are simply not going to allow it here. Oh, and one minor note. Just because a particular case isn't listed here, does not give you a free pass to write any entry. If you are unsure about any topic, field the idea with the blog staff first, or ask about it here. -The Blog Staff

    Blog FAQ

Blog FAQ Getting to know your blog: What is a blog? A blog is a Web Log, or online journal. It is a place where you can post whatever you feel like, provided you follow BZP's rules and guidelines. How Do I get a blog? Only Premier Members can have blogs. There is only one exception [see next item]. To start a blog once you are a Premier Member, there is a "Manage Your Blog" link in your profile options when you click your username in the top right. You should click it! I started a blog when I was Premier/on BZP's birthday, and I'm not a Premier Member (now). Can I still use my blog? Short answer: No. The blog is visible and you have a few powers such as drafting/publishing entries and editing them, but you will not be able to edit your blog's appearance, launch new content blocks, start new entries or approve new comments [if applicable]. However if you eventually do pay for Premier Membership, you will be able to use that same blog again. If you have a blog but aren't Premier, keep in mind these rules. Sounds good, but what does a blog do for me? Ever wanted to post a topic, but it doesn't belong in any of the forums? Done. Got some ideas you want to bounce off of the community? Done. Want to have a place where you can talk about your personal life? Done. Got a cat? Great. Talk about it in your blog. A blog is BZP's answer to having the maximum personal freedom. Can I advertise my/a Website on my blog? Provided that it follows BZP's Advertising Guidelines. Helping the blog team: Who is the blog team? The blog team is made up of staff members whose sole purpose is to moderate and maintain BZP's blogging community. It is made up of five Blog Assistants (Shine, Bfahome, Nukaya, Ta-metru_defender, and Takuma Nuva) and one Blog Leader (DeeVee). We read every entry and comment made on BZP, and moderate accordingly. We are also the foremost authority in the blogging community. I saw something in a blog that breaks BZP's rules and Guidelines. What do I do? Hit the report button, and explain what bad thing has happened. We will get a report that automatically contains a link to the comment or entry you're reporting. I saw something that might have broken rules, but I'm not sure. What do I do then? Still report it. It is not your responsibility to have to prove each report. We will look into it from there. I can't read some of the comments. They're half blocked by content blocks. How do I fix this? Read this topic. Using your blog: Blog Settings On the Manage My Blogs page, there is a button on the bar displaying your blog that says "options". You will see a drop-down box that says things such as "Go To Blog," "Add Entry," "Settings," "Manage Categories," and "Manage Comments." To change your blog settings, click settings. To do any of those other things, click those things. The main settings you will (and are able to) use are at the top. Here you can change the name of your blog, the subtitle, change your notifications, and change your blog comment approval system. It is recommended you set your comment approval to "moderate all comments" so you can control what is posted on your blog, to minimize portential for spam. However, this is not required. Just be smart about things, okay? Making Entries Once you are in your blog, there is a black box in the top right of the blog that says "Add Entry". Click this, and then add your entry! You must have a title, and you can add "tags" to make your blog easier to navigate. On the right you can edit your categories the entry fits into (note, you will have to re-make your categories after the blog software upgrade). Above this, you will see an option to save your entry as a draft, to publish later, or an option to publish now. You can also click "Publish Now" at the bottom of the entry field. When writing your entry, you can use the rich text editor or the simple editor to do your formatting, to change between the two, simply click the lightswitch shaped icon in the top right of the edit box, right above the Bold icon. Content Blocks In the past iteration of blog software, there were many more options for your content blocks (and some of you are going to have some problems with them that we are unable to fix, sorry). You can no longer change the sizes of your blocks, they are a fixed size. You can add new content blocks by clicking the black box next to "Add Entry" that says "Add Blocks". You will see a drop-down menu you can choose from. (By the way, in case you were wondering, the optimal image size for a perfectly centered image in the new content blocks is 222pixels). Comments You probably want people to comment on your blog. We've discussed the comment options for how they appear on your blog, but there are other things to note too. In your blog you can edit or delete comments left by members. Remember, you are responsible, to a degree, for content left in the comment section of your blog. While you won't be the one in trouble if someone leaves a spam comment or some other rule-breaking comment once in a while, if it happens too often, you may lose blogging privileges. We expect you to maintain decorum in your blog. Make our jobs easier, by being responsible blog owners. And if something in your blog smashes the rules to pieces or is of exceptional worry, please use the report function immediately. The report button, remember, DOES INDEED work now. Other Blogs: Blog Layout Just like the old board, the default blog view is a list view. There is a link on the top of the blog listing that will change to the new Dashboard view. You can use whichever you prefer, and you can set the default as you see fit. However, clicking the link in the tabs at the top of the forums will always bring up the list view. How do I favourite a blog? This is a little more complicated with the new software. You will have to open a blog, and hit "follow this blog". This gives you options to follow the blog anyonymously (so your name does not show up as a follower), and an option to receive notifications for the blog. Set those as you will. What does adding a blog to content I follow do? It adds it to this list. You can find this list by clicking on your username in the top right of the screen, and clicking "Content I follow", and then changing the filters to "Blogs" in the top box, and then "Blogs" in the bottom box. (Or you could click the link right here in this paragraph too. I honestly suggest bookmarking that page).

    Blog Lexicon

Welcome one and all to the blog lexicon or the "Blogsicon". This is a compilation of various terms used in the blogs. Archive: A list of all the entries in a blog by month they were made. You can get to the Archive by clicking the "Archive this Blog" link in the "Blog Links" default content block. Archive is also a verb meaning to get to that archive. BA: Acronym for Blog Assistant. Blog: A contraction of Weblog. It refers to a "log" or "journal" made online (in this case BZP). Sort of like your own mini-forum. Blogger: Someone who is the author of a currently active blog. Blog Assistant: A member of the blog moderating team given the power to lock, unlock, draft, publish, or edit entries in all blogs. Blog Leader: A member of the blog team able to remove or edit comments, remove, edit, lock, or unlock entries and edit/delete content blocks. Category: Categories are a simple way to organize a blog. If you click on a category in a blog it will show you every entry that was posted in that category. Comment: A post that a reader leaves in an entry to comment on the entry's content. Content Block: Small block of content on either or both sides of the entries in a blog. There are a few default content blocks that can be selected or you can make a custom one. The best comparison to a content block would be a side bar to the side of a forum. Entry: The main, author-written content of the blog. An entry can be about anything (so long as it's BZP-safe). Sort of like the topic in your blog. Premier Blog Assistant: A Blog Assistant that has all the perks of a premier member as well as their normal Blog Assistant powers. Rating: This is in the upper right hand corner of every blog. The rating of a blog can be 1 to 5. The rating will not appear until a blog is rated six times. RSS: Acronym for Really Simple Syndication. In short, RSS is a way for blog author to let you know what new content they have available within their blog. By using the RSS Feed you can subscribe to a specific blog. In short it is like a news feed for a website only in this case for the blogs. You can add RSS feeds as a live bookmark in Mozilla Firefox. For more information on RSS see this entry. Track: A verb meaning to track the blog in question, or subscribe to it. If you are tracking a blog, then it e-mails you when new entries are posted.
  12. What can Blog Assistants do? Blog Assistants can edit, lock, unlock, draft, and undraft blog entries, as well as unapprove comments and view drafted entries and unapproved comments. Additionally, if a blog author has their blog's settings set to "Approve Comments", comments by Blog Assistants (or any Admin/Global Moderator/Blog Leader) are automatically approved. What can the Blog Leader do? Blog Leader can do everything the BAs can. They can also pin blogs (like this one) and delete content blocks. What can Global Moderators and Administrators do in blogs? Global Moderators and Administrators can do everything the blog owner can do except make new entries.

    RSS Feed FAQ

We have received many questions through PM and email asking about RSS Feeds. This will be the place where we hope to answer a lot of questions about them. This entry will remain open if you have further questions. What are RSS feeds? Many websites use RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds to send updated headlines to their users via services. All sorts of web sites and publishers produce feeds - newspapers often publish feeds of daily headlines or breaking news stories, magazines might publish feeds about top stories, and other sites use feeds to alert customers to new products, upcoming events, or other important information. Even BZPower has it's own news feed. RSS Feeds are not just for news. Many Blogs use RSS Feeds, BZPower is included. What do I use to read RSS feeds? Many different programs and websites use RSS Feeds, such as Mozilla Firefox, Gmail (Google Mail), Yahoo, and many other services. For most of them you can just copy and paste the 'Syndicate My Blog' link and it will add that BZPower blog to the service you are using. Most websites or programs will explain how to add them. RSS feed readers are built into many programs such as My Yahoo! and Google, modern web browsers, e-mail programs like Mozilla Thunderbird, and even Apple's iTunes. I hope to add another entry later which will go into detail on how to add them. How can I tell what other pages let me subscribe to a BZPower RSS feed? On web pages, web feeds are typically linked with the word "Subscribe", a feed icon (a square), or an orange rectangle with the letters XML or RSS. These buttons look like: - - Where is the RSS link in the blogs? The RSS link which is titled 'Syndicate my Blog (RSS)' can be found on the My links content block. How do I add it to one of the RSS feed readers? All you need is to copy and paste the 'Syndicate My Blog' link into a place on that reader. Although for some all you need to do is click the link. It depends on what you are using to read them. Others are even easier to add. Mozilla Firefox has the orange square in the URL of the blogs. All you have to do is click it and it should take you to a place to add the feed. Currently it seems as if that place it links to is Google. If RSS Feed link to blogs can I post a blog that isn't on BZPower? No. External blogs count as forums and they are not allowed to be linked to. Please see the Advertising Guidelines for more details. There are a few important syndications that I would like to take note of. These are the links you would add. BZPower Blog HQ If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
  14. Blogs: How You Can Help Many members, such as yourself, have wondered how they can best help out in the blogs. It's a lot harder than helping out in the forums, so this guide has been assembled to get you started. Please note that the first and third sections are simply suggestions you can follow, whereas the second addresses the blog rules. I. How can I make my blog easier to moderate? 1. By looking at your own blog for double posts or multiple comments of the same message and avoiding posting stuff that isn't allowed, you will help the staff a ton. 2. It helps if you use the "Last Entries" and "Last Comments" content blocks. This allows the staff to be sure they have gone through all the new content in your blog (except content blocks which will have to be rechecked) by simply looking at these. II. What should I post/not post as an entry? 1. Remember BZPower's advertising, language usage, and politics/religion rules. We don't want to see flame in the blogs, and we don't' want to see content that would be rated above PG. 2. Spam is fine in the blogs, to a degree (though still incredibly annoying). However, posting two comments in a row, or posting the same basic comment multiple entries is not, and will be removed. 3. Helpful entries are encouraged to be posted. 4. If you're not sure about whether you should post something, don't post it. This applies in the forums as well, so you should be used to this. III. What is the best way to report? *UPDATED* If you have something to report, click the report button, describe the offense, and a blog staff member will receive the report and an automatic link the the offending content. (Please do not use this to report signatures.)
