  1. Well, I'm not entirely clear on that, but I guess now it's just normal LU mode. The preferences file on this computer only has "language=en" in it... I typed something in on another computer to unlock LU mode originally, but I forget how. :P (Is LU mode now standard, I take it??)

  2. Okay, I'm currently failing here, but the point I am trying to make is that BZP doesn't feel very Bionicle-y any more, when you look at it.

Bionicle has ended. :P Simple as that. We are now more of a buildfig-in-general (Bionicle, HF, etc.) and LEGO-in-general site. And if you mean the logo on the news page of HT, he hasn't changed. If you just mean our name at the top of the forum, that's not really a "logo" per se, it's just the label of the forum, since we've so recently moved to this new board. (I have no idea, for the record, if we're planning to bring HT back into it, though I agree that would be cool. ^_^)I think that pretty much answers all your specific questions for me. :P In short -- we -are- less specifically Bionicley now, on purpose. :) I get your point about how much so as far as forum appearance, though, and it's a valid one. :)
  3. And I'm not done. Both lines are made by the same people (essentially), and were created almost exactly ten years apart.Coincidence? I sincerely doubt it. Of course, there are several details that are different in either storyline. But when you strip it down, they both seem the same.

Well, what you've said prior to this quote is accurate, but let's keep in mind that if you strip down a story, where you stop is arbitrary, and if you strip down any story too much, pretty much all stories are identical, or at least fall into only a few categories. This is simply a standard point I make whenever I see people talking about boiling down a story, though; admittedly, it's not a major problem with your comparison because you pointed out several ways the two are similar which most other stories are not. We could add LOST, on most points, BTW, to much of this. :PI agree with you that it's #2, an intentional tribute. Idea #3 is nuked by the fact that we've had so many years of new ideas, along with nostalgic 2001ers begging for more that's similar to 2001. It's pretty obviously a nod in their direction. :) As well as the successful formula idea you mentioned. If we got, say, three years or so in a row of ideas that are so similar as this, then we could reasonably worry they'd run out of ideas.I also think a big part of it is a natural human desire for this sort of story, where the enemies are animalistic monsters surrounded by the wild jungle or nature in general. That part of it I think is the main unique point here, and that alone is true of thousands of other stories throughout human history. True, the "infection" similarity takes it beyond that basic theme, but yeah. Let's face it, and endless array of humanoid muahahahers alone, just one replacing the last one, gets old fast. :P I'd say HF even went closer to the animalistic than Bionicle in every line, with the villains consistently deviating from pure humanoid. (Unfortunately the Heroes are basically identical, but I've talked a lot in the past about why that is; buildfig target audiences see that as the image of a hero, and animalistic as villains, and when LEGO tried changing it in 2005 the heroes didn't sell as well.)Re: Everybody realizing that in April -- Probably most of us did, to be fair. :P But I haven't seen a topic actually addressing it in this depth (and quite intelligently might I add ^_^).
  4. This stuff is ubercool, VF! I especially like the wanderer, Makuta, and the green Toa (is that supposed to be anybody in particular?). I agree it would be great to see the Makuta colored. The green Toa does everything the best, IMO, along the lines of my old ruthless elegance blog entry, including use of color and lighting. The energy or whatever it is in the lower hand is fascinating.

  5. Clever -- and it looks like something we might have seen portrayed as a carving in 2001. Like it's glowing with mysterious energy, heh. I agree about the lettering's centering, but oh well, yeah? :P

  6. I think I have used the word Steltian in fanfics before to refer to Sidorak's species (or was that approving it in someone else's EM work... anywho). And I like the Bruisers idea. Krekka seems like a big stretch no matter how you slice it, personally. The point about him being dumb can go either way -- maybe he was too dumb to learn a nickname, so the DH just gave up and called him by his real name, for example. There's also the possibility of using some kind of a prefix, like Nui-Steltians to refer to the high class (though no idea what for the low; certainly Kofo doesn't work). I can definately seeing Bionicle characters using that solution since they have in so many other places.

  7. Hey guys. I've been playing LU, both as member and free (along with my brother Ojhilom) during the downtime. Details are PMed to Gatanui, but I'm bonesiii, Assembly. I have a public Block Yard property called the Skull Star Vale, if ya wanna check it out. Has a few original MOCs and is based around a Maelstrom-themed mystery riddle. :) Oh, and there's Stromlings to fight. BTW, I discovered the Sentinel Tower totally by coincidence (well, I think it is the highest rank one there, so it was bound to happen, eh?) and saw the question about BZP, and the name Gatanui there. It's cool; I liked the confined battle area, and the construction is excellent. I especially like the logo symbol thingy. I wondered about the question, though -- about Binkmeister, if we were supposed to be able to answer it in the chat; it wouldn't let me. Anywho. Oh, and the top of the tower looked really cool too, if I recall right, heh. For the record, I'm taking a break from membership right now, plan to renew for six months in mid December. Wanna see Frostburg and stuff. :P Ojh and I both also play on the free account AdeptCurlyPixel. Ojh's member char on my account is FriendlyPlasmaFoghorn; Sentinel, and we both use Parallelodox and Radventurer (factions obvious :P). In general, LU is awesome.

...I still have not entirely figured out the theme of Avant Gardens (grassy plains/monument?), although I still like it. What I don´t like about Crux Prime is that it is merely Maelstrom-themed and the enemies are just those from other worlds with other textures... ~Gata. ;)

It's a play on words of the phrase "avant garde", from French, meaning (in English anyways): "the advance group in any field, especially in the visual, literary, or musical arts, whose works are characterized chiefly by unorthodox and experimental methods." So the theme is the Paradox experimentation (which went awry). It's also likely a play on the word "guard", since the two factions you get approval from there are combat themed - Paradox is the offense, Sentinels are the defense. (On Nimbus Station you get approval from the creative and exploration themed factions, Assembly and the Venture League.) The statue isn't Assembly themed per se -- keep in mind what it depicts, which is a fight between a minifig and a Maelstrom enemy (I think it's supposed to be a Stromling but I can't tell lol). So again, the theme is combat. Just because there's a character there who's Assembly, and it's being built, doesn't mean the faction defines the location. (Nimbus station is a pun too, on bus station. :) And since it's been cleared of bad guys and focuses on imagination the theme is similar to the Nexus Tower; the game theme of use of imagination clearing Maelstrom. Nimbus means something like a halo or an aura, which I guess fits the theme of protection around imagination.) And personally, I like that about Crux Prime. I like it when particular enemies aren't confined to just one spot in just one manifestation. And weren't the skeletons new there originally, before Ninjago was released? (I wouldn't know for sure; I joined when I heard Ninjago was launched, but some of the items refer to Neido as Sensei Wu, so I think Sensei was originally there before they moved him to Ninjago.) And I think most if not all of the skeleton specialties are still unique there from Ninjago.

Has anybody else of you got a weird in-game mail by a Mythran containing a Fancy Tree Model Pack, titled "Thanks for playing LEGO Universe" and saying "Enjoy your free item!"? ~Gata. ;)

Twice I got similar messages. I forget exactly what the packs were, but yeah.
  8. Does art created through a game, such as Minecraft, count? Obviously credit to Minecraft and Mojang would be needed, but then again it is a serious art medium. Rivin

That kind of art is fine by me. :)

Is there any rule against using the LEGO Photo app?

I'm unfamiliar with it, could you clarify?
  9. Welcome to the rules topic for the LEGO Discussion Forum. :)

This forum is devoted to all LEGO-related discussion that doesn't fit in any of the themed discussion forums.

Chima, Ninjago, Bionicle, and Hero Factory discussion thus is now not a part of this forum. Discussion of all other themes, sets and story, belongs here.

    LEGO Discussion Rules

    1. Obey all general BZPower rules, as found in the Reference Desk.

    2. No flaming. This essentially means insulting people. Before you submit your post, ask yourself if you have let slip an insult, and edit it out. And in general, calm down and remember this is all about entertainment. Chill and stuff. :)

Note: Posting in all caps is considered yelling which can be seen as flaming, so is also not allowed.

    3. No trolling. This is a murky issue that basically means being stubbornly antagonistic or hostile -- failing to be cordial and polite even while disagreeing, for example -- without actually clearly flaming. This sparks others to flame, making them look like the culprit when really the troller is. In other words, to quote the main BZPower rules, it is "trying to force someone into an argument".

Note: Please do not confuse trolling with disagreement. This is a discussion site and so we do want you to speak your mind, but to do so politely and remember that we are a community. :) By the same token, please do not act offended if someone expressed disagreement with you, and do not claim that they have no right to do so.

    4. No spam. Posts must add to the discussion's subject. Stay on topic, and avoid "repetition & agreement spam", which basically means posting the same thing others have already posted or just quoting them and saying "I agree".

Note: Many topics, especially in this forum, ask for individual opinions on a subjective subject. For example, a topic asking for personal reactions to LEGO's changes over the years (a popular subject) is fair game for agreement posts. But in a topic asking for the official answer to the reasons behind a LEGO company decision, they would be spam. Many members seem to have trouble judging the difference -- basically, if there is a single objective answer that can't be logically debated, there's no need to add agreement.

    5. Avoid confusing titles. The title should tell everybody what the topic is about -- exceptionally unclear titles may be edited by staff to clarify.

(For example, if your topic if about HF, or Roboriders, or Ninjago, or Atlantis, something in the title should make that clear. Also, HF topics focused on story, not sets, are best clarified in the title too, so for example we do not confuse "Favorite Hero Character" topics with favorite HF set topics, the latter of which doesn't belong here. However, this is more of a guideline than an actual rule. :pirate: )

    6. No topic revival past 60 days since the latest post.

    7. Do not make "dupe" topics, which means a topic about the same specific subject as an existing active topic (meaning a topic that hasn't "died" by going past the revival limit). Before posting a new topic you should skim the current topic titles in LD and if you find one about what you wanted to talk about, simply post in it.

    8. Do not post your topic more than once. If you get a Mail error, or "Page cannot be displayed" when posting a topic, do NOT click "Back." Close the window, and bring BZP up in a new one, so that you can get back to this forum, and check to see if your topic really did go through. Most times it has.

Note: The exception to both of the above rules is if the previous topic (either by you or someone else) has died, but you think there is still room for discussion. In such cases you may repost the old topic, but please include a note about it as you do.

    9. No offensive/inappropriate language or content, and no controversial subjects such as religion/origins/politics.

Note: Occasional comparisons of aspects of official LEGO story (besides Bionicle story which belongs in S&T) aspects to controversial real-world subjects may be acceptable if they are done very carefully, but are best avoided because they tend to get out of line too, and LEGO isn't the real world anyways. (But comments about such subjects posted only for their own sakes will be removed; find other sites to discuss them.) Above all, remember this is a family-friendly site.

    10. If you have any questions or concerns about these rules, please PM me and I'll try to answer in a timely fashion. :)

Topic Subjects Guide for LEGO Discussion

The following subjects for discussion shown in black do, yes, belong here in LD. Discussion that belongs elsewhere is highlighted in red with a link to the forum where it does belong.*

General LEGO criticisms, analysis, praise, and complaint topics (such as opinions on changes and trends), again, if NOT specifically about either sets or story, belongs here.

Discussion about themes that do not have a dedicated forum belongs here.

--> Bionicle sets and other discussion belongs in Bionicle Discussion
--> Hero Factory discussion belongs in Hero Factory Discussion

--> Ninjago discussion belongs in its own forum

--> Chima discussion has its own forum too
--> Bionicle story discussion, including theories and story-limited favorites, belongs in Bionicle Storyline & Theories*

Other LEGO lines story discussion (such as Ninjago, Pirates, etc.), including theories and story-focused favorites, belongs here.

--> All fan creations belong in the respective Creative Outlet subdivisions

NOTE: HF MOCs (fan-made plastic creations) now belong in the same forum as Bionicle MOCs; that is Bionicle-Based Creations. Similarly, printscreens of HF LDD MOCs belong in BBC as well (although the rules there do not say this, the administration confirms it), not here.

--> Discussion of BZPower itself still belongs in General Discussion (and of course BS01 discussion goes in its forum, and non-LEGO discussion goes in COT)
--> Set trading discussion and the like goes Buy/Sell/Trade.

(Edited 9/28/14 to reflect the new forum structure and purpose of this forum. -Wind-)

  10. Welcome to the General Artwork forum rules topic. :)

Please note that these rules have been adapted since the archiving of all past topics and the end of Bionicle. Most of the following is condensed from the old rules; the major changes are highlighted in green and the two biggest are in large text. :)

    General Art Rules

    1. Obey all general BZPower rules, as found in the Reference Desk.

    2. No flaming. Criticism of artwork is good, but it should be constructive; pointing out ways to improve. Keep in mind also that being overly negative about a person's art can come across as flaming the artist, even if you didn't intend it that way.

    3. No spam. Posts must add to the discussion at hand. Spam includes random nonsense, overuse of emoticons, "leet" or chatspeak", and "first to post" comments. Casual chatting belongs elsewhere, such as in member profile comments or by PM / IM, etc.

    4. Please avoid meaningless number ratings and focus on substantive reviewing. (If you have devised a meaningful ratings system you explain and apply consistently, however, more power to you. But "Awesome 9/10" is not a good post as it doesn't make clear what's in the 9 and what's in the 1, and also counts as spam.)

    5. All topics in General Art must present your own LEGO-related artwork. Use Brickshelf or other image hosting sites to upload your art images and link to them in topics here.

Topics that are NOT allowed here include posting someone else's art you found, topics that have nothing to do with art, request topics, teaser topics, contests, project-planning topics, and several types of topics that instead belong in the other two

    artwork forums:

-Fan-Created Media (animations, music, and other multimedia)

-Comics (comedic or storylined series of art panels; all sprite kits)

See topic types guide below for more.

Note: Since June 2011 all four Artwork forums are now open to LEGO artwork in general, not just Bionicle artwork. So Hero Factory, Atlantis, City, whatever, it all goes in one of these four forum divisions.

    6. In general it is best to make a new topic for each new work of art. However, if you have many art pieces that are very similar or variants of the same thing, it's best to make one topic for them rather than flooding the forum. Note: You may also make personal artwork collection topics which link to your other art topics. (If your collection includes topics from multiple Artwork forum divisions, including this one, it's best to make it here. If it does not include anything from this division, it's best to make it in one of the other three divisions as appropriate.) These collection topics enjoy certain exemptions as explained below.

    7. No topic revival past 60 days since the latest post. Note: Personal artwork collection topics are exempt from this rule and may be revived (please use the word "Collection" in such topics' titles to be clear, and you may also note that it is revivable in your text).

    8. No double-posting; if you forgot to add something, edit your post instead or wait until someone else has posted first. Note: Topic starters of their own personal artwork collection topics may, however, double post to announce new artwork and other updates. Note that the software will auto-merge double posts within a few hours of each other -- in fact, please do not double post within 24 hours of your previous post.

    8. Please use a descriptive title. Though there's a gray area here (because pictures are worth a thousand words ;)), staff reserve the right to edit titles to improve their clarity in extreme cases. Note: If your art is an edit (meaning a printscreen or another pre-made piece of art manipulated in an image processing program), you must include the word "edit" in the title. However, we do not allow edits of member profiles.

    11. Do not post your topic more than once. If you get a Mail error, or "Page cannot be displayed" when posting a topic, do NOT click "Back." Close the window, and bring BZP up in a new one, so that you can get back to this forum, and check to see if your topic really did go through. Most times it has.

    12. All images posted on BZPower must be 750 kilobytes (kB) in size or smaller. As explained here, images that are large in dimensions will be automatically resized by the forum software and are not problems, but images large in filesize are problematic. Please check the filesizes before you directly display it. If you don't have time, or would like to avoid the issue altogether, link to the image instead of displaying it. Note: Artwork topics are most "user-friendly" when at least a thumbnail of your artwork is directly displayed, so people don't have to click twice to see your art. You can easily make the thumbnail image work as a link to the larger version if clicked as well, by putting the image tags for the thumbnail in place of the hyperlink text for the link to the larger file, like this:

    [url=URLFORBIG][img=URLFORTHUMBNAIL][/url]

Also note: As long as you're presenting finished art rather than a shop, you may post banners and avatars for others to use on BZPower, so it is best to also be aware of BZPower's guidelines for signatures and avatars. I'd specifically recommend keeping most such banners smaller than the maximum so those who choose to use them have room for other text.

    13. No inappropriate/offensive artwork or posts. Excessive violence, sexual content, and toilet humor are examples of things that aren't allowed. Note: All BZPower and General Art rules that apply to language use in posts also apply to text in pictures. Also note: Do NOT quote objectionable material. This applies across BZPower but especially to offensive images.

    14. If you have any questions or concerns about these rules, please PM me and I'll try to answer in a timely fashion.

Topic Types Guide for General Art

    Allowed Topics

    * Paper sketch artwork (scanned or photographed, colored or not)

    * Computer-graphics artwork * Combination of paper and computer art

    * Edits of pre-existing images (as long as you use "edit" in the title)

    * Non-shop banners and avatars for others' use (if you prefer requiring permission and/or credit cited, say so, or if you are willing for them to be freeware, say that)

    * Sculptures and similar creations

    * Personal artwork Collection topics (revivable), linking to other art topics of yours (as long as some topics you're linking to are in General Art)

    *Shops (with staff approval)

*Help topics (appropriate to this forum; that is, a help topic on making comics would go in the Comics forum)

Prohibited Topics & Where They Go Instead

    * No music files; they go in Fan-Created Media

    * No sound files; they go in Fan-Created Media

    * No animations; they go in Fan-Created Media

    * No movies with sound and/or music, they go in Fan-Created Media

    * No spritesheets (pixel art designed for computer games, animations, comics, etc.); belong in Comics

    * No sprite kits; belong in Comics

    * No comics; belong in Comics

    * No MOC (My Own Creation out of plastic LEGO pieces) topics; go in Bionicle-Based Creations or System-Based Creations

    * No digital LEGO creation topics (such as LDD printscreens); those also go in Bionicle-Based Creations or System-Based Creations

    * No games; computer games go in Fan-Created Media

Note: Card game topics belong in Games & Trivia. If you make a General Artwork topic to display the card artwork itself, comments in that topic may only be artwork-related, not playing the card game itself. (And by contrast, a card game topic in G&T is for playing the game, not to review the artistry of the cards.)

    * No request topics. These may go in your signature or as PMs to artists whose work you admire.

    * No post-it-here topics. If you want to see other people's artwork, browse the Artwork forums. Or, you may put a line in your signature asking for others to PM you links to their art topics to review or the like.

    * No contest topics. The only contests allowed here are the official General Art forum contests run by staff. However, if you are premier you may run artwork contests on your blog -- and entrants may post topics about their entries here for such contests (as long as they're otherwise fitting for General Art versus Comics or any other forum division).

    * No project-planning topics. You may ask for guest stars and helpers in your signature, however, and of course you may plan projects by PM/IM/etc. Also note that major fan project planning discussion may be tolerable in topics that feature some of the artwork produced "so far" -- see below for more.

    * No teaser topics. By teaser here I mean posting such barebones early-sketchy version of unfinished art that you're not really showing the art at all, or showing highly vague edits of your art and demanding posts before you reveal the clear version, etc. There's a gray area here, and including clearly finished art that is part of a series of works or a major fan project is usually fine. Teasers are also usually fine in signatures or on your blog if you are premier. Teasers may also be okay if they are used as thumbnail images linking to the completed artwork for dramatic purposes.

    * No mere inverts or other "one-click" edits. This refers to merely changing the colors or inverting the colors of a pre-existing image that would not otherwise be considered art. Or, just applying a filter (such as those that make it look like canvas or bricks, etc.). If you can make it by hitting just one or two buttons, chances are it doesn't belong here, but might be okay in a signature, etc. (if properly sized). However, "one-click" edits of artwork that would be allowed here anyways if it hadn't been edited in such a way are okay. So don't misunderstand -- color inverts and filters and the like ARE allowed, but only if that's not all that's new that you're producing. There has to be some real creative work put into it besides "one-clicks".

    * No profile edits. To quote Pohuaki from the old rules, "These are edited screenshots showing member's profiles with altered rank, post count, PE, etc. They became sufficiently annoying that they have been banned."

    * No non-LEGO artwork; belongs in the Off-Topic Culture forum division. Note that "human Bionicle" and similar art styles do belong here as long as something in the art makes it clear it's LEGO-related.

(Edited 9/28/14 to reflect the new Creative Outlet structure. -Wind-)

  11. Contest HistoryThere are three main kinds of contests in S&T:S&T denotes official Storyline and Theories contests, which often add something to the story canon with Greg's permission.KJ/TC denotes contests advertised in pinned S&T topics, run by the KanohiJournal, usually in tandem with The Chronicler (previously called IDBM; the Unofficial German Bionicle Magazine).EM denotes noncanon Expanded Multiverse contests (previously called EU; Expanded Universe), with the theme of contributing to a "fanon" collection of characters, items, and more that are freely available for any fan to use in your own fanfics, roleplaying, games, whatever.Voting for all three of these contest series previously occured in the Story Voting forum; it will now belong in voting forums on the new forum as needed. Also:GF denotes special contests run by Greg Farshtey himself, also often to add something to the story canon.Italics denotes an archive forum link, thus an automatic logout. 12. Useful Story Resources
Besides the above resources, there are several other places you can go to find information, images, and the like about the Bionicle story. The following are the top recommended such places:

    BIONICLEsector01 Wiki
With in-depth references pages on a plethora of Bionicle storyline subjects, editable by all site members and checked carefully by a diligent staff, this is the top resource for Bionicle story on the internet.

    Biomedia Project

Much Bionicle content such as comics and games are archived here.

    Online Serials
The later additions to the Bionicle storyline by Greg Farshtey are compiled in a BZPower topic here. They are also on Biosector01 and Biomedia.

    BIONICLEstory.com
The official website focusing exclusively on the Bionicle storyline [as archived on Biomedia]. After the end of the main storyline and the sets, this is the main place the story is continued through, with updated story serials. There are also reference pages and more.

Greg Farshtey Q&A at the LEGO.com Message Boards

This is the place where fans can still ask Greg questions and occasionally get a tidbit of new info about the story. The above link is where you can see just Greg's posts (he goes by ScribeGT6817), as pointed out by TheSkeletonMan939. See the Official Greg Compendium for records of some of the most interesting of these from JAG18, extensive Q&A archives from when Greg used to answer questions here on BZP, provided by fishers64, and recent major updates thanks to Erebus. To ask questions of Greg at the LMB topic, you'll have to be logged in to a LEGO.com account.

    The Faber Files

Christian Faber was one of the people who worked behind the scenes on concept art and development; he has a popular blog where, among other things, he reveals concept art and planning-stage ideas behind Bionicle, often relevant to the canon story. Above link is to his Bionicle category of entries; you can see entries related to other things he has worked on via the menu at the top.

    Useful S&T Topics:

fishers64 has compiled a list of Greg answers to major questions and misconceptions about the story near the end: What Greg Farshtey Has To Say About Recent Storyline.

  13. Storyline and Theories Rules

    1. Obey all general BZPower rules, as found in the Reference Desk.

    2. No flaming/trolling. Be nice to each other.

    3. No spam. Posts must add to the discussion's subject. Stay on topic, and avoid "repetition & agreement spam", which means posting the same thing others have already posted or just quoting them and saying "I agree". Note: Some topics ask for individual opinions on a subjective subject, and simple agreement posts in those are not necessarily spam. But in for example a topic asking for a canon answer to a storyline question, they would be spam.

    4. Do not make "dupe" topics, which means a topic about the same specific subject as an existing active topic Before posting a new topic you should read through the current topic titles in S&T. If you find one about what you wanted to talk about, simply post in it.

    5. No offensive/inappropriate language or content, and avoid controversial subjects. This is a family-friendly establishment.

    6. If you have any questions or concerns about these rules, please feel free to send me a PM.

    Allowed Topics

*Theories on the official storyline, based on evidence. (See "theory definition" section below for more.)

Questions about the official storyline (sometimes answered and closed, but left open if remaining questions have no definite answer, etc.).

    Comments/observations/praise/criticisms about the storyline.
Asking for "like or dislike" opinions/reactions about story-only subjects.

"What I/you would do differently" topics about the storyline

"What if" (alternate events and theorizing on their results) topics -- Though you would do better by expanding upon these ideas and posting them in the Libraries forums.

    Prohibited Topics
No speculation topics. Don't just pull something from thin-air.
No coincidence topics, The Bionicle stories are dense fiction, and there's always going to be some similar ideas.
No "post-it-here" topics, such as "post your favorite characters" or the like.

    Spoiler Policy

In the wildly unlikely even that Bionicle Gen 3 comes to be this part will be amended. Otherwise all possible information is fair game.
