  1. Gosh you are good at these Templar animations. Well written and executed, once again getting the tone right while also managing to incorporate YOUR style of writing and visual composition as well, which adds another layer of charm to it all. Biggest kudos for including not one but two new Rahi into the Templar style. Extremely well done.

  2. The struggle is real. I don't remember how difficult all the third circuit ones are, all I remember how notoriously brutal Ice Planet Pathway is. What a nightmare.

I'm simply unable to install it again on Windows 10 and that makes me sad.

  3. As you might've just figured out, yes, I did manage to find the old copy of this game I had a while ago and have started playing it a bit. So far, I've already gotten past the first circuit and plan to try the second circuit sometime soon. In addition, I have also been going through the Time Trials, where if you can beat a certain time on all of the tracks, then you'll unlock another car set (I think the name of the driver you're racing against here is Veronica Voltage, or something like that). Since half of the circuits are mirror images of the other half, the Time Trials are for the tracks from only the first three circuits, though the power-ups are set up a little differently for the sake of helping to improve your time. The first set of tracks were doable, but the second set were quite a challenge. I've managed to beat all four tracks from that set, but it was definitely frustrating in that it required a lot of "threading the needle", so to speak, where missing just one green brick speed boost could mean the difference between whether or not you actually beat the opponent's time, so I can't even imagine how difficult the third and final set of tracks will be. With that being said, do you think you might be interested in doing an additional episode after completing all the circuits to show us some of these Time Trials?

The Ice World one is notoriously difficult, that was always the last one I was able to do because you can never stuff up if you want to succeed. I think the Royal Castle one was also particularly bad as well, I don't remember.

I've NEVER noticed that it's Baron von Barron. Nor that weird glitch where you were in "6th" place for the whole last lap of the Islander course. But it's always great when one of the non-champs wins a race, and with warps too. Royal King is good for that on that track, a lot of those in circuits 3 and 6 do it as well, and everyone does it in the final circuit, where I think Black Knight (very original name) is the most accomplished at it.

Random aside, but it was pretty cheap that Ann Droid, Islander, Willa the Witch, Black Knight and Gail Storm all have the exact same car. And only two of those make any sense. Come on.

  4. Grey for Castle levels, Yellow for Pirate levels, Beige/Sand for Adventurer, and Blue for Space levels (I think RR's level is blue as well?)

Man, it bothered me for ages that Nightmare-athon had no shortcut and spent ages looking for one, but I'd never heard that there was an area that could've been one. I think when clipping through the walls near the dragon I could see some powerups, but I don't remember. Anyway, something I didn't know, hooray!

Had a lot of trouble with this and Gypsy Moth's circuits, Adventure Temple Trail is my least favourite in the game because basically if you stuff up once it's all over (a lot of the time anyway). Warp all the time. Alien Rally Asteroid however is my favourite track, a lot of fun.

Very familiar with the skeleton cackling as this was always my standard racer when I would install the game. It features at least one brick from each "set" once you completed each one, including the time trials (though I don't remember what KK brick I used). On the licence for BMR it was always the angry face. Not sure why I'm saying this.

  5. The other thing about the magma moon dome shortcut is that as you drive past the brick indicators or through the dome it will play some sounds that indicate the next pattern. From memory the higher note is the red path, lower is blue. So you can get a combo of dome shortcuts, which is especially good if the first time you go through the flicker path.

I never used the second shortcut in Kahuka's track. There was a little edge to the right of that one that either had a green powerup or a power brick (I don't remember exactly, all by muscle memory) and I would always use that for making warps. Very easy track to lap the last place people.

Similar story for the Ice World one, that was the first shortcut I ever found as well.

  6. Always had it on PC so never had a controller for it, so I know I probably would suck at it. Was totally prepared to scrutinise all your powerup tactics but you pretty much used all the ones I used to use. Once you know the layout you only mess up if you mess up your patterns. The fun for me was to go through the circuits and not go after the turbo powerups ever, and see if you can still win the circuit. Don't think I was able to do that with the final circuit ever, but the others it was possible. I know this game a little too well.

The second game was always harder to have a perfect strategy due to the Mario Kart nature of the powerups, but in story mode once you get the permanent powerups it gets much harder to lose.

Next time you go to that space one in the first circuit, point out how the other shortcut works, the one with the dome. I think that level had the most creative shortcuts.

Good luck with the VV time trials, some of those were really tough. And show off the test track as well sometime for novelty. Yeah, I liked this game fo' sure.

  7. This seems like a mountain/molehill argument to me (hence indifferent to both questions). On the one side you have people trying desperately to get every small minuscule thing canonised or clarified. The other side complain that this is somehow eroding the very essence of the story to begin with, that each of these micro-canonisation/clarification things is ruining the ethos as a whole.

But that's the thing. The things that are changing/canonising are so infinitesimally small and insignificant, canonising or not canonising makes no difference whatsoever. I don't understand the need to do it, and I don't understand the need to stop it. If there's ever been a canonisation that has had any significant outcome on the story maybe I could sway one way or another and I would like to know. For now I'm just completely baffled.

That being said, probably half my bafflement is because of being out of touch with the S&T community and the like, so I'm not actually really aware of what is going on most of the time, what the scale is and so on. I dunno.

  8. First off, thanks for linking your Review Topic to your Story Topic and vice versa. I don't check out Epics that often these days, but this one where I've the topics linked to each other in a long while. I find it really helpful for getting to one topic from another. :)

People don't do this normally? I was a terrible writer back in the day, but at least I did stuff like this. This is basic ease-of-access stuff!

Welp, didn't expect to appear so early on...like, character #2. Intrigued to see how this progresses, and I do mean beyond satisfying my inflated ego. It's an interesting idea and I'm impressed with the response you were able to get in your blog entry for characters. The difficulty with member participation I've found in the past is with how much the members try to wrest some control of their characters, influencing the author's plan late in the piece. Like, with the rules you imposed, it's greatly limited the influence of the participating member's on your story, which I think is correct. I think you've probably set the right balance from the get go and I know you're one of the writers on here that is probably best suited for tackling the logistics of such a project.

Not sure why I went on this tangent, maybe just musing on how I would have done things differently with my own work. Anyway, I'll be reading to see what happens as things go on.

  9. I don't think I've ever seen 3D art and animation like this mixed with the types of gags we'd see in the 2D MNOLG animations (the sweat drop part also got a chuckle from me). I also loved the movements during the battle sequences. They generally weren't the typical movements that the movies seemed to use over and over, and I was engaged through the whole thing.

Absolutely, particularly the movements of the Kohrak, some really fun ideas. Also I'm impressed with the amount of knowledge there was in this, as like Pohatu I hadn't memorised the Krana. But also the little callbacks to MNOLG animations as well as MOL I believe, plus the TLR music as well. Always enjoyed Vrahno's work in whatever he's done, but this just about tops all of that.

  10.

Wow, it's gorgeous. Would love it to join my VW Comby from a few years ago. Shame not in time for my birthday, but anyway.

Once again though my usual rant about US prices vs. Aus prices. Since it doesn't include shipping, there is no excuse.

Hm? Even sets that aren't going to be sold at retail have to be shipped to distribution facilities to await sale. Beyond that, there's a very good excuse—offering a "fairer" price (as opposed to one that's in line with the prices of other Lego sets in Australia) would consequently devalue the more expensive retail sets. Lego prices are not based solely on production and distribution costs, but on perception of value and on what individual markets can bear. In the case of Australia, the country has a higher average income than the U.S., and the cost of non-Lego goods is generally higher as well. So Lego adjusts the prices accordingly. It's unfortunate for people who live there, but that's basic economics for you.

Yeah, figured it had something to do with this (forgot the term for this, used to know). Checks out with inflation figures. Ah well.

  11. It's an interesting idea, what would interest me is the owner of the set would get some cut of the service each time the set is rented, or whether you just get a cut to begin with. Anyway all this sort of shared ownership (uhoh) is really interesting stuff, something along these lines...

    WARNING: Excessive Australianness.

Course there's going to be lots of issues with trustworthiness of customers, so would be interesting to hear what measures they would implement on that front. Anyway it's only a US service currently, but wish them all the best, and curious how successful this model will be.
