  1. So, the anxiously anticipated LEGO House is officially open to the public today in Billund. Back in mid-2015, Faber jumped on his personal blog that he uses to discuss anything of relevance to himslef and posted an entry that pretty specifically implicated that there will be a decent amount of late 1990's and early 2000's G1 memorabilia and concepts on display there. From the original post: "The phonecall confirmed that Bionicle will have a prominent place in that history since it was the "The toy that saved LEGO" (quote from J∅rgen Vig Knudstorp) and suddenly all my Turaga beach crates full of old sketches gets interest." As it is, I think that we saw a brief glimpse of a display featuring the Toa Mata back in 2016; is anyone aware of what else is down there? Heck, does anyone know a fellow who's going? -Azani
  2. There's no way around it: for all of its high points and our nostalgic fondness, the G1 story line was imperfect at best and a downright mess at worst -- thus is why we all have head-canons. Although I have my own thoughts about where G1 went wrong and ways to improve it, I have recently become very interested to hear what my fellow BZPers have to say about it. So, to you I pose a question probably as old as Bionicle itself: Where do you think G1 went wrong? What would you do to fix it? Would you have liked to see G1 go in a different direction altogether? Thank you all for your insight!
  3. So, Greg having revealed in his Q/A topic that the Great Beings are actually of the Glatorian species (which, for me at least, was a massive disappointment), I began wondering what set the two groups, meaning the regular inferior Glatorian and the Great Beings, apart. It is clear that not every Glatorian is on the level of the Great Beings, since if that were the case the whole pre-MU story as well as the 2009-2010 story would have been infinitely different. None of the Glatorian we meet in the story ever display a particularly high level of intelligence, definitely not on the level of the GBs (since they are wallowing in dirt and sand, after all). So, what, are the GBs a genetic 1% who were born with a mutation that made them significantly smarter? Were they bred that way? Was it eugenics? Cybernetic modification? Are they simply the "übermensch" equivalent of the Glatorian? Maybe they are a separate tribe of a different "element" (many elements in Bionicle aren't actual elements, hence air-quotes), like Knowledge or something? Are they a completely distinct sub-species with several different traits setting them apart from the more common Glatorian archetype? Honestly, I really think making the GBs Glatorian was a bad, bad idea. It completely takes away the air of mystery about them that made them enigmatic and interesting. Now they're just Glatorian nerds instead of these mythic, incomprehensible beings. What do you all think?
  4. Trijhak

    The Barraki

Thinking about it, the Barraki were probably among the best waves in G1 BIONICLE. They weren't clones of each other, unlike the Bohrok, Rahkshi, Vahki. Hordika, Piraka, or Inika. They were quite distinct from each other, and yet they belonged together, and you could definitely see how they resembled creatures of the sea, well, most of them. Kalmah is probably the one with the weakest design, seeing as he looks nothing like a squid. Ehlek and Takadox have the strongest designs, and Mantax, Carapar, and Pridak are somewhere in the middle. These sets, I believe, are probably the best example of what made G1 good. Not terrible, not bad, but good. They're distinct, similar, eschewed the clone-sets of previous waves and did something new, and I also believe they are the G1 sets most similar to G2's villain sets: they follow the same theme, yet they are all distinct.
  5. Alright, so the past 4 (?) epics I"ve written haven't gotten past 5 chapters, and so far I've only managed to complete one. So this time I'm sticking strictly to the canon so I'll have more to work with. Review topic. CHAPTER 1 The peninsula was beautiful. The lovely blend of rolling hills covered with tall grasses and wildflowers with patches of dense forest created a dazzling feast for the eyes of the observer. Oh, how beautiful it was. The Mukaus were gently grazing on the fields, and various other Rahi were milling about. The entire scene was the ultimatum of peace. And then it vanished. The vision passed as quickly as it had come, like a firework. He who saw this vision, a Le-Matoran, returned to his reality, where he was plummeting through the icy cold air of Ko-Metru’s residential district at night. He mentally activated the rocket that was strapped to his back and turned his torso upward. The rocket’s counter momentum slowed his descent until his feet just barely scraped the roof of his target building, at which point he deactivated the rocket. The building in question was a sprawling apartment block. It could be described as one of Ko-Metru’s “slums,” since this is where most of the working class Matoran lived, however the living standard of Ko-Metru was one of the highest in the city, second only to Ga-Metru. A Le-Metru rat like himself would have killed for an apartment of this quality. He folded in the large wings that were attached on either side of his rocket and approached the maintenance door to give it a test. It was locked. Unfazed, he pulled his sword out of its sheath and twisted a knob on the pommel of the hilt. The blade began to turn red hot and the air around it shimmered. Once it had blazed white, he plunged it into the door and carved out a circle. After doing so he removed it and deactivated the heating element. The Matoran then slid a pair of gloves on that were lined with suction cups. He gently applied pressure to the area within the circle until he heard the distinctive sound of the suction cups attaching to the surface of the door. He then pulled back, slid the chunk of metal out of the door frame, and placed it on the ground next to him. After climbing through the door, he found himself in a long hallway. Thick metal doors with plexiglass rectangular windows lined either side, and they were each assigned with a five digit number that began with 23, in correspondence with the floor that this was on. There was obviously no attempt made at furnishing the hallway, as the ceiling and walls were bare sheets of rusted iron. Air, gas, and water pipes were exposed, and there were some loose wires dangling about here and there, some of which may have been live. It goes to show how horrible the quality of life was elsewhere in the city if this kind of building was seen as a luxury. The Le-Matoran tip-toed his way down the hall until he came to a door marked “23480.” He unsheathed his sword and repeated the same process that he did for the main door, however this time he kept the heat much lower to prevent excess light from filtering around the building. It took much longer, but it was still possible. After he entered the apartment, he crept through the living room and through the short hallway that lead to the bedroom. His target was soundly sleeping. As he crept towards the bed, he observed her: a Ta-Matoran wearing a Kanohi Matatu fashioned in its noble form. He carefully slid his sword out of its sheath and turned on the heating element. He raised it above his head, ready to end her life with a clean cut. But he didn’t. Instead he turned around and lowered his sword. Sighing, he walked towards a desk on the other side of the room. On it was an assortment of papers and leaflets. He then remembered why he was sent here to kill her: she was a propagandist. She was creating fliers, pamphlets, and other forms of propaganda in Ko-Metru to dissuade the Ko-Matoran from supporting Po-Metru in the war. He knew how vital his mission was. If Ko-Metru sided with Ta-Metru, it would all be over for Le-Metru. Their allies in Po-Metru might be able to win the support of Ga-Metru, but because of Le-Metru’s location, it was almost guaranteed that there would be Ta-Metru partisans marching through their streets in a month’s time. In one swift motion, he cranked up the heating element on his sword, turned around, and sliced the blade through the Ta-Matoran, and cutting the bed below her in half. Not talking any time to contemplate what he had done, he turned the flaming sword to the table and held it over the stacks of papers, incinerating them. He searched the other rooms in the apartment and destroyed all other pamphlets and fliers that he could find. Afterwards he left and flew out of the building. As he soared through the night sky, he wept.
  6. Hi, guys! We all know that Makuta Teridax from G1 and Makuta from G2, everybody's favorite Bionicle villain and mine, too, are like different versions of each other from alternate universes. Each of them is the main antagonist of one of the generations overall. Both are powerful and demonic warriors who have shadow powers and can shape-shift. They even turn into Titan-sized, or Hulk-sized forms, which are their traditional and well-known forms. They are masterminds who created complex plans that lead to conquest and destruction. They led armies of other evil-hearted villains. They always kill some people along the way. All of these qualities make them very dangerous, crazy, and cruel. We always see the Makuta's fight against Toa and their allies. Some of their allies are who the Makuta's call their "brothers" who they put into endless slumbers for a thousand of years. The Makuta's proved to be most difficult foes that the heroes have faced, are archenemies of the heroes, too. The Makuta's are like Bionicle's own Thanos from Marvel, Darkseid from DC Comics, Aku from Samurai Jack, Him from The Powerpuff Girls, the Overlord and Garmadon from Ninjago, President Business from The Lego Movie in 2014, Megatron from Transfomers, and Jafar from Disney's Aladdin movie in 1992 (happy 25th anniversary to it). I would consider Makuta Teridax to be one of the greatest villains in history (Makuta G2 - well, not so much). They have been through many battles through the storylines, and they include: 1. 2001 - Toa Mata vs. Makuta Teridax in his vortex form 2. Late 2003 - Takanuva vs. Teridax in his shadow Titan form 3. 2004 - Toa Metru (mainly Vakama) vs. Teridax in his winged Titan form 4. 2007 - the Barraki vs. Teridax as Maxilos 5. 2010 - Mata Nui and his forces vs. Teridax, controlling the Great Spirit Robot, and his forces 6. 2016 - Toa Uniters vs Makuta G2 If you have other things and the Makuta's being involved in battles in mind, go ahead to say it. Anyway, the point in this topic is that to ask you this: What is your favorite Makuta-Teridax-or Makuta-G2-involved battle? My question is inspired by the time I watched YouTube videos about boss battles of a certain boss from some games, like Lego Joker from Lego's TT Games, Bowser and each individual Koopaling (each of these guys have their own video) from Mario, and King K. Rool from Donkey Kong. There are so many Makuta Teridax/Makuta G2 fights that I compare them to these videos. You see what I mean? So, as I said, what is your favorite Makuta Teridax/Makuta G2 battle? For me, mine is the 2001, late 2003, 2004, and 2010 battles.
  7. Back in 2002 a very young boy started playing with a line of toys known as bionicle. That boy would someday become me. I feel there is no one person you can thank for this theme. So many people worked on it to make it what it was. And now that's it's gone (possibly forever), I feel the need to thank them. My childhood wasn't the easiest. However this theme was a light through all of it. It was something that always made me happy. No matter what it did. It was a thing that defined my taste in story. Ever since the days of viewing promos on mini discs the theme always left me awed to some degree or another. Even as a near adult I look at my old canisters and sets and think of a time long before now. Of different people, different places, a different me. In a lot of ways a happier time. And this theme was present throughout that time. It was always such a great feeling to get a new set and open it up, see how it all goes together. And those characters were genuinely inspiring to me. Some of the earliest heroic characters I can recall. So I would like to thank everyone involved in G1 for all of this. And I also thank the G2 team. We may have had different ideas on how to handle the theme but you were clearly doing your best with what you were given. You wanted the kids of today to grapple onto bionicle like we did. And although it may not have been a success your efforts will not be forgotten. Thank you for reading. Feel free to post whatever you like here.
  8. Now I'm pretty sure this topic reared its head in these forums, possibly even several times, but the search function didn't toss anything out and I'm also pretty sure all of those threads are beyond the necro threshold. So this is pretty simple: where in the Bionicle universe(s) would you live? I included G2's Okoto as well. While it wouldn't be my personal choice, I do see it being a possible selection for some fans. It is similar to Mata-Nui, true, however Okotoan architecture is pretty unique when compared to things in G1 so I see reason for it to be a legitimate choice. There are several more named islands in the GSR, however the poll only allows for 17 options. Feel free to write up why you chose what you chose, since this is supposed to be a discussion after all. For me, Metru Nui is the obvious choice. I've said as much on two occasions in two separate topics recently, as Metru Nui always fascinated me. The idea of a massive, technologically advanced city which is rooted in natural elements regardless (Po-Metru is a literal desert in spite of being part of a metropolis, Ga-Metru is beautiful with its lakes and lagunas) has always captivated my imagination. It was my favorite setting across all of G1 as well, precisely because of all the potential it had. That said, I was a tad disappointed when some years later, after reading up on official lore, that it is actually pretty small and only has about a thousand Matoran living in it (canonically, though others have mentioned how in LoMN, more are shown). In my headcanon, Metru-Nui will always remain the inconceivably massive sprawling sci-fi metropolis with countless millions of Matoran working, living, playing and resting among its skyscrapers. So which location would be your preferred home in the Bionicle universe?
  9. So I was randomly browsing images about the Barraki when I remembered that back in 2007, the toy store I frequented had this small display aquarium advertising them with one of the Barraki, I think it was Kalmah, in them. Thing is, the display set had a squid-launcher unlike the final released version. Instead of a more crossbow-like design, it was more, I don't know, Sci-Fi like? Seemed a bit like a spaceship. Anyway, I was kind of disappointed those versions weren't in the commercial products, and unfortunately the store owner was also into Bionicle so he wouldn't sell it to me at a price I could afford (didn't have a big allowance at such a young age). Are any of these parts floating around or do any BZPower members have them? After a quick search didn't come up with anything other than a few TTV discussions, I became curious. How rare are these things? Do their owners just not frequent Bionicle communities, or are the prototype squid launchers just not sought after and thus they don't warrant mention? Here are images of what I'm talking about:
  10. While Skakdi are capable of physically wearing Kanohi Masks, they do not possess the measure of focus nor the mental capacity to utilize their powers... Except for the very small fraction of the population who were mutated by the personal experiment of one curious Great Being. About 1-3% of the Skakdi population have well above average mental capacities - even beyond that of Toa. While the average Skakdi cannot use Kanohi powers, these mutant Skakdi can use the powers of multiple masks at the same time, without even wearing them. Known as Shamans, or Witch Doctors, these Skakdi are physically larger than their regular counterparts, and their spines are more elaborate. Their mutations also cause the appearance of various abnormal growths on their bodies, though luckily these are always symmetrical. Other physical characteristics are more vibrant skin pigments - the average Skakdi are bi-colored without armor, though both colors are always different shades of the same color - and hunched back. Skakdi Witch Doctors are equally revered and feared by their counterparts, while their existence is seldom considered more than a rumor beyond the shores of Zakaz. The Witch Doctors wield terrifying power, and are able to activate and control the powers of Kanohi masks even at a distance, thus using the powers of opponents' masks against them. They also wield elemental powers, considered by their fellow Skakdi to be "magic", and immense physical strength. It's fortunate, therefore, that Witch Doctors seldom engage in combat. While they are rarely seen outside of Zakaz, all Witch Doctors travel to other islands occasionally to harvest Kanohi - usually still attached to the original owner's head. Beyond this, they do not engage in the warmongering typical of their race. Instead, the Witch Doctors dedicate their time to rituals, incantations, hexes and the consumption of various mushrooms, while practicing the use of Kanohi powers, Their innate abilities allow them to control 3-4 masks, however if exercised (much like a muscle), this can be increased. The most powerful known Witch Doctor managed to simultaneously activate the powers of 35 Kanohi. After this, he claimed to have been "enlightened", and traveled to a nearby Skakdi village where he preached that their world was actually the body of a larger being, who was travelling through the void. The villagers promptly tore the Witch Doctor to bits and ate his remains. Two shamanistic pursuits of the Witch Doctors not related to Kanohi are Voodoo and the training of familiars. The former involved the crafting of - usually Skakdi-like - effigies which can then be linked to the soul of another, thus any force affecting the effigy would effect the individual bound to it. Familiars, in turn, are rahi who are tamed by the Witch Doctor, and kept as loyal pets. This particular Witch Doctor once caught a newly hatched Visorak, tamed it, and enchanted it so that it will never grow in size. Witch Doctors often live in huts or hovels deep in the jungles of their homeland. While the homes of the Shaman often mirror their denizens and are thus unique, one constant in all such homes is a ritual altar, which functions much like a table. Witch Doctors are keen collectors of all kinds of oddities, so seeing various Kanohi, old weapons and even kraata around their altars is not unheard of. All Witch Doctors carry a special staff, which they adorn with the heads of those whose Kanohi they collected. The Shaman are capable of using not only the Kanohi they wear, but also those on their staff. They also all possess ritual daggers, used in the art of Voodoo, as well as other rituals requiring living sacrifice. flickr album: https://flic.kr/s/aHskGwEAtw Thoughts and feedback much appreciated!
  11. Back in this topic I asked you guys what you didn't like about G1. Now, I want to know what you did like about G1. What made it special? Where did it shine? If one moment contained the essence of all that was good in G1, what was it? Thanks in advance for enlightening me!
  12. Taito was an adventurous if clumsy Ta-Matoran living in a remote village somewhere in the southern isles. His adventuring was considered odd by his fellow villagers, and thus he became something of an outcast. On one of his travels, he encountered a Toa stone. He vowed to look for the Matoran for whom it was intended and help him fulfill his destiny. Little did Taito suspect that he was the intended recipient of the stone. During one of his travels, he encountered an old, abandoned Suva, and upon inserting the stone into a receptacle, a beam of energy turned him into a Toa. Taito became one of the Undestined - Toa who, lacking a concrete destiny to be fulfilled, were tasked with travelling throughout the various islands of the Matoran universe, seeking evil wherever it may preside. Around the time Taito became a Toa, a number of other Matoran - five, to be precise - also became Toa. All were without Toa teams, and eventually drifted together to form an unofficial team, called the Toa Voya (meaning "voyage", to signify that they are not assigned to any one island). Taito wears the Kanohi Arai, the Great Mask of Fortification in the shape of a Hau. The Arai combines the powers of other masks, such as the Hau and Pakari in smaller doses, allowing the user to more effectively hold their ground against an overwhelming force. Taito is unlike most other Ta-Matoran or Toa of Fire. Though his element is characterized by brashness, hotheadedness and arrogance, Taito is curious, adventurous, and well mannered. This moc started out when I wanted to come up with my own Matoran build. Then once I was done, I thought I might as well build a Toa version, and then I thought I might as well add him to the new Toa team I was putting together. Further members coming soon! 13. Hi, guys. I have been wondering about the G2 characters. We know that the Toa Mata are recycled as the Masters while Makuta Teridax as Makuta, but there are so many new other characters introduced in G2. So, my question is this: why there are the new characters? Why not the old ones? Usually, when I see reboots, they recycle protagonists, their friends/allies, and main antagonists. Examples include The Amazimg Spider-Man movies, Spider-Man TV shows, The Incredible Hulk in 2008, Captain America movies in 2011-2016, Teen Titans Go! TV series, this year's The Powerpuff Girls, and the Transformers TV shows. Some of them also recycled old villains and some introduced new ones. Bionicle G2, however, is one of a few reboots that I know that only recycled the main protagonists and main antagonist, not the heroes' friends/allies. This reminds me of Transformers' Beast Wars and Beast Machines TV shows, and this year's new Ghostbusters movie. Bionicle G2 also is like a reboot mixed with how Indiana Jones: Temple of Doom has all-but-one-characters-are-new idea (the character, Indiana Jones, is the only recycled character in the movie and his not-rebooted-at-all franchise). I know that Lego is trying to make new stories for Bionicle, but why put new characters that we are not familiar with from G1? Some of these new characters, however, remind me of some old G1 characters. Here a list: 1. The Protectors - the Turaga of Mata Nui 2. Ekimu - Mata Nui (being), Artakha, and Takanuva 3. Skull Spiders - Visorak (mixed with Infected Kanohi and Krana) 4. Lord of Skull Spiders - Fenrakk 5. Skull Slicer - Nocturn and the Glatorian 6. Skull Scorpio - the Nui-Rama and the Skopio X-V1 (the name) 7. Skull Basher - Kane-Ra 8. Kulta - Brutaka (the whacking-all-six-Toa-in-one-hit action) 9. The Elemental Creatures - the Rahi and Element Lords 10. Umarak the Hunter - the Dark Hunters 11. The Elemental Beasts - the Bohrok 12. People from Okoto - the Matoran and Agori So, why didn't Lego use the old supporting characters as well? Would it have made a difference for G2? Imagine the Turaga helping the Toa get the Golden Masks while going commando on the Visorak instead? Toa fighting the Fenrakk at the City of the Mask Makers? Toa awakening Mata Nui the being (not the giant robot form and just a Toa-sized form) or Artahka in the City? So, what do you think? Got any ideas about why the new characters in G2 replaced the old ones in G2?
  14. Note for anyone reading this: is there a place to save drafts on here? I don't want it stored on my local drive. Also, how do I see all the posts i've made? it's been a while since i've logged on haha. Introduction Yes, the title may have been inspired by a certain Netflix series, but this is a G1 epic. The setting is simply the Matoran Universe - not during a particular time or anything. Perhaps it's not even in the main universe, who knows - it's meant to be somewhat non specific. There are several differences from the established canon though, that I thought I'd document here in order to make the story less confusing: 1. There are much fewer elements: ice/water, fire/plasma, stone/earth, light/shadow etc. are the same element. Any differences between the matoran tribes is strictly cultural. Light/shadow are basically two sides of the same coin, although I don't think we'll really see that come up in the story at all, considering right now I don't have plans to include a toa of light. Iron and lightning are still elements, "the green" is referred to as Wood. Gravity, magnetism, sonics, and psionics are not elements. 2. MU anatomy is a little more fleshed out (no pun intended) here than in official canon, although I don't think it contradicts too much. Matoran Universe Inhabitants (MUIs) basically have organic organs and such, and a metallic, clockwork-mechanical exoskeleton. 3. Clothing is worn more often in this version than in official canon as well, mostly for the same reasons that it is in the real world. 4. Genetic material used to create new matoran comes from existing matoran/toa, (just like in the real world... well, not just like IRL...) so it is possible to have actual siblings - a little nod to the fact that in official canon, many characters refer to each other as brother or sister. 5. All gender/element correlations from official canon are out the window. forget about them. they don't exist. all elements have both males and females. 6. Memory crystals are the bionicle universe's version of pensives from harry potter. see author's note before the prologue. I may add to this list periodically as I think of stuff, but there's nothing too drastic to be changed. One other note: since it fits with the story, and I'm horrible at coming up with character names, pretty much all my characters will simply have nicknames. I'm going to try to have the characters use these as little as possible, given how cringeworthy they all are. This story is also probably going to be told out of order, similar to ABC's Once Upon A Time, if anyone is familiar with that. Characters Mister - wow, that's a bad pun if I've ever seen one. truly sorry for this one. (Mist? like water?) A male Ga-matoran scientist from metru nui who works for a laboratory. While traveling for work, he became a toa. Main character. Mata feet, inika legs/arms, faxon. carries a pair of bladed oars that can be used separately or attached together to form a staff. Frosty - oh jeez, can these get any worse? (yup!) A female Ko-matoran from metru nui, she also works for a laboratory, and goes on the same work trip as Mister, where they both become toa. main character. mata feet, inika legs/arms, kaukau. carries an elongated shield and a weaponized ice-pick. shield can be used as a sled. Rusty - I told you these would be bad... He's a Fe-toa from an unspecified island. he knows mister from the past when they were both matoran; i think he was his contact for work on another island. main character. Miru. carries two projectile launchers (they're totally handguns) and almost always has an ammo belt or two. (he's a total Rambo bada**.) Volts - sorrynotsorryanymore. a female vo-toa from... somewhere. she's with rusty. main character. undecided mask, probably a rau. carries an electrified pike, or, ahem, a lightning rod, if you will. Naho - omn (oh mata nui) a "normal" name! This is basically Naho from canon, sort of. she's a ga-matoran from metru nui, and is mister's twin sister. after the lab they both worked for found out that mister became a toa, and thus didn't work for them abroad anymore, she was sent to take his place and finish his work. Kakama. Table of Contents - subject to change. Prologue. Naho receives a gift from an unexpected guest. Chapter 1 Mister and Frosty sail towards their mission. Chapter 2 Mister gets a mission Chapter 3 Mister and Frosty meet an old friend. Chapter 4 The foursome work on their mission Chapter 5 Something goes wrong Chapter 6 Whodunnit? That's all I have time for now, this will be updated periodically. Please post in the review thread to talk about this. Does any of this make any sense? is anyone actually looking forward to reading this? here's the review topic link: http://www.bzpower.com/board/topic/23517-journey-for-two-review-topic/
  15. What fan theory would perfectly unite Slizers (Throwbots), RoboRiders, BIONICLE (G1), Hero Factory, and BIONICLE (G2) into a singe cohesive story/universe?
  16. So I'm not exactly sure if S&T is the best thing for this, since this is more of a discussion on a "what if" scenario rather than the actual canon story, but hey, I guess it fits here. I'm sure this thought flashed through most of your heads at one point or another, but how would you have envisioned the G1 storyline after 2008 if it would have stayed in the GSR? What if Teridax miscalculated and the Toa Nuva were successful in awakening the Great Spirit in the Codrex, and when the heroes gathered in Metru Nui to celebrate, the constellation in the sky showed them the symbol of the three virtues instead of a Krahkaan? I actually think about this a lot. I would have loved to see a whole new toa team, preferably of the secondary elements, like Sonics (make Krakua a set and main character!), Plasma, Iron, Gravity, Psionics and Electricity maybe (I know there are more of them). It would have been interesting to explore some of the locations we only got glimpsed of in spite of being told that they're really important, like the large northern and southern continents, or maybe something of a island-hopping adventure on the many southern isles. What if, with a bit of 2008 retconning, the energy storm didn't only wreck Karda Nui, but caused all kinds of natural disasters throughout the GSR. While the main cast is all happy on Metru Nui, celebrating and getting drunk off Madu Pálinka, say an earthquake wrecked a prison or something on one of the southern isles, and an inexperienced rookie Toa team is sent to re-capture the escaped Dark Hunters or other baddies. The whole storyline with the Shadowed One and his virus would be continued, eventually making him the next big baddie with Teridax gone (for good), and the new Toa would be mixed up in it due to their pursuit of the fugitive Dark Hunters. I also noted that, in spite of elements and elemental powers being a big thing in Bionicle, the story never ever pulled something where a character tried to achieve control over multiple elements. A new storyline could even have focused on an outlaw Toa who was banished due to killing an opponent and thus violating the Toa code attempts suicide by way of energised protodermis, however instead of dying, he/she is mutated into a new being with the power to gain control over any element if it consumes a user. So initially it would have no element, but if it consumed (via shadow hand or something) a Toa of Fire, it could control fire. If it consumed a Toa of Air after, it could control Fire and Air, and then it would go on a murderous quest to become the master of every element, causing it to target, say, Takanuva, since he is the only Toa of Light. Seeing as G1 had a tendency to become multi-layered and complicated in terms of story, both could be weaved together in some way. Anyhow, that is my personal take on a potential story set on the GSR post-2008. If you were put in charge of coming up with such a story, how would you do it?
  17. One defining factor of G1 was the different kinds of builds that were introduced with each new wave of sets. Each season was guaranteed to introduce a plethora of new pieces... At least until 2006 where things became more formulaic and recycle-y. In my eye, no sets exemplify the evolution of G1 better than those portraying Toa and Matoran, the two most iconic, recognisable and important kinds of characters in G1 lore. So I want to know - What was your favourite Toa build, and your favourite Matoran build? (Note the date ranges - You can vote for builds if they apply to Glatorian, Agori or STARS sets if you so wish. Also, I haven't listed anything to do with polybags, just boxed/canister sets.)
  18. By Epigo, Southern Continent Gazette BO-KIMA, TREN KROM PROVINCE—A reclusive Bo-Matoran (name unknown) was forcibly taken from the public square several bio outside the local Suva by several Toa, one of whom operates from said Suva. Confirmed reports state that at least three Toa, as well as two unidentified bipedal Rahi, rushed and apprehended the Matoran. --It is unclear exactly why the Matoran was detained. Bo-Kima’s own Turaga Drekka came forward with a statement saying that the Matoran was arrested for “illegal experimentation on Matoran and Rahi of the Southern Continent,” with no further details given. The local Toa involved with the arrest could not be reached for comment. Requests to disclose the Matoran’s name were also ignored. --Several Matoran in Bo-Kima offered their own theories, the most popular of which links the arrest to the mysterious disappearance of a Ta-Matoran named Luqyr three weeks ago, who was discovered about a kio down the Tren Krom River with his heartlight missing and his chest armor removed. Official investigation into this apparent homicide is “still ongoing” according to a statement given last week by Turaga Drekka. Further inquiry into the status of this investigation has been ignored. --Two independent reports state that several large and unidentified footprints were seen in the mud and flora near the Suva around the area of the arrest. The reports also state that the Bo-Matoran appeared to struggle with thin air prior to the appearance of the Toa and Rahi. These eyewitnesses claim to have seen the Bo-Matoran in question “knock his mask sideways” on something. “It must have been completly [sic] invisible,” one of the reports state. However, none of the witnesses saw a Huna—a Mask of Invisibility—on any of the Toa involved in the arrest. --“I always thought that he was strange,” an anonymous Matoran told the Gazette, referring to the arrested Matoran. “He would always keep to himself. I talked with him a few times and he always seemed nice enough, but just a little … odd.” --Other citizens expressed similar feelings, and no one seemed to know his name. --“I always thought that he always wanted to keep something for himself, you know?” a Ga-Matoran, Puone, told us. “This community is so tight-knit that I always wondered if he was just an outsider, just wanted to be left alone.” --When asked about the claims of “illegal experimentation,” the citizens were mixed. --“Yeah, it makes sense that he might be involved with Luqyr’s death,” Puone said. “With the town mostly made of Bo-Matoran, those not of that element are outsiders by nature. It makes it even weirder that he was an outsider to everyone.” --The Matoran’s whereabouts are currently unknown, leaving prominent Matoran activists in the Tren Krom River province aghast. --“The actions of the Toa and Rahi against a member of the Bo-Kima community cannot be overlooked,” said Hakoar, a Vo-Matoran and right hand of provincial capital Kima-Nui Turaga Qaiu. “There is no accountability or oversight to their actions and given the lack of official statements, no evidence that the accused will receive a fair trial for his alleged crimes. Those responsible for his arrest should come forward for the sake of transparency.” --More to this story will be added as the case unfolds. ■ ------------- Review Topic
  19. Hello, everyone! As we all know, G2 has sadly come to an end. In commemoration of the entire BIONICLE saga, I've decided to offer this series of two prints as my contribution to its legacy. Each print is 10 inches by 10 inches or 25.4 cm by 25.4 cm. They are printed on Kodak Endura Metallic and mounted on 50pt matboard. All prints are signed by the artist on the back for no extra charge. This Kodak paper is a favorite of mine- both because I'm from Kodak's home turf (Rochester, NY), and because of its incredible responsiveness to lighting changes. While they are mounted and fairly sturdy, you may also wish to frame them to protect the print. Each print is $15, unless you are buying the Generations Set. Payments should be made through Paypal. I will provide you with shipping costs once you give me your address. PM me if you have any questions or concerns. Prices: GENESIS (2001): $15 FOCUS (2016): $15 Both (GENERATIONS SET): $25 GENESIS: $15 USD Print One is a rendering of Tahu (2001)'s Hau, entitled GENESIS. (Photos of print) FOCUS: $15 USD Print Two is a rendering of Tahu (2016)'s Mask Of Fire, titled FOCUS (Photos of print) Q: What do they look like on a wall? Thank you for looking at my prints! -Haecceity
  20. Almost a year ago, in this topic, it was discovered that a few combiner models of uncertain origin had actually been featured on the Bionicle website in late 2003. For those unfamiliar, these are the four models: The first model was comparatively well-known, since it was featured on the back of one of the comics from 2003, but the other models seemed like they had been mostly forgotten. Months ago, I tried to reverse-engineer and rebuild some of these models, and inspired by all the more timely Makuta-replicating topics, I finally got around to photographing a series of steps needed to construct these models. I wanted to share what I'd done: Onua Nuva + Pahrak-Kal / Pohatu Nuva + Nuhvok-Kal: http://biosector01.com/wiki/index.php/File:Inspirational_Model_3_Instructions.pdf Tahu Nuva + Kohrok-Kal: http://biosector01.com/wiki/images/a/a3/Inspirational_Model_4_Instructions.pdf I think that these reconstructions are mostly accurate, at least as far as I can tell from a single image. If anyone notices a discrepancy, though, please let me know. The Onua Nuva + Pahrak-Kal model does use one extra #2 axle, but I couldn't find a workaround that matched the photo as closely. Also, I'm curious if anyone is interested in trying to reconstruct the second model, built from Lehvak, Panrahk, and Kurahk. I don't have any idea how to rebuild that torso, but if someone else figures it out, I'd probably be willing to create a similar set of detailed photo instructions, if nobody else does.
  21. So now that the Flickr contest has reached its final phase, I thought I'd post this MOC in its own thread in order to get some feedback. I'll probably re-vamp it based on suggestions - not to enter it again in the future, seeing as most contest forbid that, but simply because it looked a lot cooler in my head when I thought it up, and want to squeeze as much out of the concept as possible. Full album: https://flic.kr/s/aHskAYaHyU Backstory: Korval, also known as the Blizzard Reaper, is a rare sight indeed. This being is the embodiment of death in the Matoran Universe, however he is something of a "newcomer". No record of him appeared until a few decades before the great disturbance. No one knows how he came to be - was he already in the MU, but in hiding? Is he the result of an unfortunate encounter with energised protodermis? Is he one of the vile creations of the meddling Makuta? Whatever the truth may be, Korval is feared by all. His mask, the only one of its kind known to exist, is constantly active, creating a violent snowstorm in a given radius around him. His Scythe is said to have a hunger of its own. Not many, not even Korval himself, knows the true extent of the Scythe's powers. It is was lends its wielder his great aptitude in combat. Korval has limited telekinesis exclusive to the scythe. Wherever the scythe may be, with a thought Korval can lift it and will it into his grasp. When embedded in an enemy, be they wounded or dead, Korval may control the victim's body as long as the blade of the scythe is not removed. He sees through the sinister eyes of the skull adorning the scythe, and the few who survived an encounter say when he speaks, a second voice repeats his words from the same skull. One of the most sinister qualities of the scythe about which no-one is aware, is that it cancels out the protocols of the Red Star. Any being in the MU slain with this weapon will not be resurrected. In spite of his grim task, Korval is not inherently "evil". His purpose in the MU is to compensate for the appearance of new, additional and dangerous beings within the machine due to the Makuta's experiments, encounters with Energized Protodermis or other causes. The internal ecology of the Great Spirit Robot is fragile, but necessary to ensure optimal function. Korval acts as something of an anti-virus measure. Dangerous creatures who do not fit into the function of the GSR are eliminated by him. While his scythe grants him special powers and augments his skill in battle overall, he is hardly defenseless without it. His mask-power alone, which causes a violent and disorienting blizzard around him can end weaker foes. His left arm ends in massive claws which rend flesh and armor alike, and his tail is also a formidable weapons. The appendages sprouting from his shoulders are also dangerous, however while they can move, he cannot independently control them, but like five-fingered being cannot move some of their fingers independently of one another, those appendages move due to the conscious movement of the arms. The many small spikes on his body excrete a venom which dulls the minds of his enemies. I tried to take inspiration from some of the Titan sets of the latter years, like 06,07 and slightly 08. I went with a white and red color scheme with some silver added as armor, since white and red, excluding Krika and Pridak, wasn't a scheme often seen in Bionicle. This MOC is actually a mix of two earlier MOC concepts. I started out with the scythe and only once it was done did I start thinking of what kind of character should accompany it. Initially I thought of a more straight up thin, skeletal reaper like guy. On the side, I was working on a bulked up Pridak revamp that started straying further and further away from the original design, becoming his own character. I've seen some extremely impressive and amazing MOCs both here on the site and in the BZP Flickr group. Would any of you skilled and experienced MOCists bless me with some suggestions, techniques and critiques?
  22. We'll never get a set better than this set,
  23. A while ago I was thinking of the differences between the old and the new Kopaka, and eventually I made this. Link: I have to say there's something charming about the old Kopaka, something that the new one is missing. I liked how he didn't need a shiny armor or to be bulky to be one of the strongest and most resourceful Toa of the team. I thought about making one of these drawings for each Toa but I doubt I'll have the time... Comments are very welcome, please let me know what you think!
  24. Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but hey, it's about Bionicle, right? So, unless you've been living under a rock or something, you might be familiar with the recently released AR mobile game called Pokémon Go. The internet is overflowing with information about the thing, so I won't write a book here detailing what it is, but basically you use your smartphone to look for and catch Pokémon scattered around the real world using Google Maps integration. It isn't out globally yet, but it has been sweeping through the USA and some other regions where it has launched. This gave me an idea - what about the same thing with Bionicle? Obviously this will never happen due to G1 having been cancelled and Bionicle, even at its peak, not having been even near Pokémon in terms of popularity, but hypothetically, would you play? Various Rahi would be "hidden" in the real world, and you would need your Rahi-Go app to find them. Instead of a trainer, you would have a Matoran avatar, and instead of Pokéballs, you'd be throwing bamboo disks at the Rahi. You could "tame" them by knocking off the infected masks using the disks (so gameplay-wise it would be the same as Pokémon Go) and use them to level up. Instead of Pokéstops you'd have Matoran settlements, and Gyms would be replaced by Kini. Pokécoins would be widgets and so forth. Much of Pokémon Go's praise stems from the social experience, so for the sake of argument, presume this game would be just as popular. The three starters would be Fikou, Kofo-Jaga and Gafna, while the fourth hidden starter would be the Ussal. Imagine traversing your neighborhood hunting for larger Rahi like Nui-Jaga, Kahus or Muakas. You'd need to find a lake or river to encounter a Razor-whale or Takea. Further from urban areas, you'd find Kavinika or Ash-bears. I think there are enough canon Rahi to make the game viable in the long run, and instead of joining one of three teams, you'd pick one of six elements to represent. Thoughts? Ideas? Would you play this?
  25. I mean, obviously not, but this was a fun idea that popped into my mind. So in early G1, Mata Nui and Makuta were always referred to as brothers, right? What if Teridax's idea to take control of the Great Spirit Robot wasn't original, because someone else did it before? Say Mata Nui was a minor Makuta who, possibly by accident, found a way to take control of the GSR. The Great Beings didn't anticipate any of their creations to have such ambitions, so there weren't any (or many) obstacles in place. Seeing as the first "identity" or "soul" of the GSR never had any other body beforehand, when Mata Nui cast it out and took its place, it became an amorphous mass of living tissue barely capable of containing its mind. Meaning Tren Krom. If Tren Krom was the "first" great spirit, it would further explain why he ended up helping - "helping" - against Teridax. He didn't care who was occupying the GSR, but as long as it wasn't him, he hated them. As for Teridax, he found out about Mata Nui's success in taking control of the GSR and became jealous. Why should some minor Makuta turn into the most powerful being in the MU? However, Mata Nui suspected others would want his place, so he put some safety measures in place, making things much harder for Teridax. Of course this doesn't mean Mata Nui was evil. We know some Makuta were benevolent. Maybe life in the MU was much more "optimized" during Tren Krom's reign, during which the Matoran really only served an immediate purpose like computer programs, however once Mata Nui took over they were allowed to "live their lives" and such. Naturally, much of this conflicts with established canon, but it would more or less fit without changing much of the story.
