    Aquazone Sets

I recently got in an order that was a first for me in a couple of ways. 1: I bought it from out of the country; from good old Canada. I'm not sure that I'd do it again; shipping was expensive and it took forever to arrive. Stupid customs... 2: I actually purchased some old, used sets in their entirety. I got two Aquanaut sets (Sea Spirit 9 and Crystal Crawler) and an Exploriens set (Planetary Decoder). This is my first Exploriens set. (Sadly, I got into Space as it was kind of dying out in the 90s, so I only had a couple of UFO and Insectoids sets) I wouldn't say I'm too impressed by the design, but it has some nice elements in cool colors. I'll keep it together for a while, but it'll prolly be scrapped for parts soon. The Sea Spirit 9 is kinda pathetic as a sub goes, but it has some octagonal bricks and cones, a blue windscreen, and my favorite Aquanaut minifig (hey, that head piece looks familiar). I've already torn it apart and incorporated its pieces into my large sub. The Crystal Crawler, on the other hand, it a very nice design; nice enough that I might just review it in my blog soon (need pictures of it to do it right). This one has not been torn apart yet, because I do like it alot. Funnily enough, I think that with all the pieces I've bought to build my sub, I could create all the Aquanaut subs from all the sets (well, just the sub from the large one... because I don't quite have enough to build the undersea headquarters) I might do that after the convention season this year... depends on how attached I am to my large sub by then. (But hey, I have the bulk of it designed on LDraw, so I could always just rebuild it) Anyway... I've been pondering buying these sets for the last two months... actually bought it earlier this month and have waited over two weeks for it to show up... so now I'm happy. Broke, but happy. Because money can't buy you happiness... but it can buy you Lego bricks, which is just about the same thing.

    Mask Collecting

Between my many brick orders for my sub MOCs, I've snagged a couple of masks too. Now I am just one away from having a full set of original great masks. Ironically, it's a mask I've been wanting for the longest time; a Green Hau. I must get one somehow. I know that it's been over a decade since the mask collecting craze started... but gosh darn it I will have all my great masks! I'm also doing well on the noble masks; have all the orange and dark grey ones. Ideally, I would also like a lime Rau and light blue Komau before BrickFair so I can make the Chronicler's company. Anybody willing to trade / sell these masks would be greatly appreciated by me. (Y'know, for a fair price... I'm not spending $5 for a mask + shipping)

    Sub W I P Part 5

Not much to say. I got all the parts orders in, so any changes to be made are pending on my paychecks coming in... and I need to start working before that can happen. A few things I would like to change... 1: Raise the middle up a brick. I'm thinking about adding some 33 degree blue slopes to raise up the top of the sub. But that would mean I'd have to buy the slopes, since my currently collection has run out of them. This would give it a better rounded feel, whereas now it seems kinda flat-topped. 2: The orange HF armor is a placeholder until I can get my hands on some blue elements. 3: More blue octagonal bricks to color up the tubing on the bottom. I would like to do more, but those pieces are expensive, so... Additionally, maybe find some better cone pieces. I might have some in my collection, but it'll be a pain to search for a pair, and I'm just not feeling up to it right now. The next step is to get some decent, detailed pictures of my two subs, the crew, and mini subs. This will probably require some time and potentially a new picture area. School ends in a couple of weeks, so I'll probably get started by then. Also, I am still fathoming the idea of creating subs for other Aquazone themes, such as Hydronauts, Stingrays, and maybe even Atlantis. One idea is for the original green and black (and trans lime green) Aqua Raiders 1. I can see a non-streamline sub with construction equipment, like cranes and shovels, attached to the sides. Additionally, I think it would be awesome if it had some conveyor belt that ran down the length of the sub, transporting crystals collected at one end to a storage unit on the other end. However, this idea sounds complex, would require some design work and specialized pieces, and would likely cost a ton. (Plus, I've never actually build a conveyor belt before, and totally lack the pieces for one) So, for now, this is just a cool idea... although I know that is what I said about my original sub project.

    Turtles

So I saw tonight's xkcd comic about turtles. And I thought to myself "The last time Randall Munroe put up a cool animal comic, I decided to make a vignette out of it." So I decided that I must rise to the challenge and build a turtle at minifig scale, and put it next to a stressed out minifigure on the computer. I mentioned this idea to Swert, and we had an intense competition on who can create a small turtle design. But in the end, I had a new idea. Why just have one turtle? Turtles are awesome. Thus... what is needed is an army of minifig scale turtles that can be displayed at BrickFair! Idea, yay or nay?

    Power Cord

So a couple of months ago I bought a spare Laptop power cord to use at school. Like the first day I used it, it sparked when I plugged it in. Shortly afterwards, it died. SO I started using my old laptop power cord that has worked for me for the last three years. I brought it to school and plugged it in the other day. It sparked. Now it's starting to die. And I'm not looking forward to buying another one because, well, they're expensive.

    Sub W I P Part 4

No, no, I did not completely revamp my idea. This is a second, sister sub. And by sister, I mean evil twin sister. Yes, an AquaShark submarine! Back story: I never had any Aquashark sets... I must've got my Aquanaut set a year after it's release, because when I really started getting into Lego the new themes were Hydronauts and Stingrays. But having constructed my Aquanaut sub to near completion (still waiting on a few pieces) I decided that I might as well work towards an opponent sub... and who better than the AquaSharks? This sub is made on a smaller scale; it's still about 80 studs long, but it's not as tall and not as wide; thus, it has less bricks in it. So far, I've only made an average-sized order to get some of the specialized pieces, so the bulk of this sub is elements that I already own. (As compared to the aquanaut sub, which was made of only like 20% of parts that I already owned) Obviously, I'm still missing a few key pieces, like the octagonal bricks on the bottom, so I will need to make a few more parts orders. But the basic design is finalized, and now I just need to fill in the gaps. (FYI, the color scheme is black, blue, and trans orange. All the yellow / trans lime parts are stand ins and will be replaced.) Onto the design; again, I compartmentalized this sub so that it can split into separate sections for easy transport and such. They are as followed: Section 1: The head. The main idea was to create an elongated nose with the classic trans orange Aquashark screen. While I like the basic idea, the bottom of the nose (the chin, neck, whatever) is way to bulky, and thus I need to rework this design. Alot. But I Like where it's going, and the trans orange hinge panels offer a nice space to store stuff... like boxes of crystals. Section 2: The arms. I again used Hero factory limbs and armor to work together some arms, with the same claw and magnet (to be added soon) design as my last sub. Sadly, I don't have any blue armor, so I may force myself to go purchase Surge to get some. Also, since I want to brag about it, I DID use trans orange glatorian heads as the arm sockets. Hey, it works. Section 3: Quarters / Fins: I got this cool new piece; I 1x4x3 window brick that has an octagonal bracket attached. It was used in the original Aquasharks sets to attach the octagonal windscreen to the side, so I ordered one and put it on this sub. I still need the trans orange windscreens, but the design works. I also added some fins to the side to make it more shark like, and I bulked up the propellers to make them sit on nice and secure. I also create a neat pattern on the top using the display plates that came with the collectible minifigs. Seriously, I had like 50 of those plates, and I managed to use about 40 or so on this MOC. WOOHOO. Section 4: Storage and Tail: The tail is a basic windscreen design; sadly, the screen I ordered was a little busted, but it fits on, so I just won't be opening and closing it. There will be two fins on the end of the tail; I don't have the bottom one yet, but when I get it, it'll look shark like. The big area in front of all this is the storage area for a small water scooter, which will fit under a windscreen (current one is a placeholder until I can get trans orange ones). And on the wides, I'm using SNOT with this nice long wedge that I got in one of the Exo Force sets they were handing out at the conventions. It has alot of what would be boring bricks, and gives a nice flow to the body of the shark. Overall, this sub is somewhat smaller (and much lighter) than my Aquanaut sub. And while the other sub is an exploratory sub, made for discovering and transporting crystals, this one is a fast, mean sub, meant for attacking and stealing crystals. My only problem is the crew; I don't have any AquaShark minifigs. Anyway, hopefully after a few specific and (cheap?) parts orders, I can have this one completed too.

Oh, I knew this was going to happen. I tried to avoid it, but it happened nonetheless... So for my online diversity class, we were given a big group project. My group decided to do a short, informative movie on domestic violence. Funny thing, none of them knew how to make movies except for me. So I volunteered to make the movie in the end. Now it's the end. The thing is due in two days. And my group really dragged their feet since we got this project three months ago. They were supposed to do research, and lots of it, and then I would get to come along and put it all into a movie. Instead, what they did was send me a couple of sheets of random-ish facts and high expectations for what it should turn out to be. Since we're worrying about copyright stuff, I had to go do my own boatload of research to find the right music and pictures to use for this movie, and then interpret, rephrase, and organize all the data they sent me into something meaningful. I've been sending them WiPs of the movie, asking for advice. So far, all they've come up with is that I should do a whole lot more stuff that they didn't research but would be great for the overall project. And I'm frustrated 'cause I've been doing a lot of work already, and this is really stuff they should be doing. Gah. (And of course, their communications have been brief and somewhat vague) So yeah, that's been what's annoying me this weekend. Mind you, this is a college group project, and some of these guys are looking to graduate soon. So yeah... Also, I don't like the course in general.

    Sub W I P Part 3

Boo Yah! So as you can probably tell, my sub has now grown larger than my current MOC picture area. heck, it's almost as long as my entire dresser. Sure, it's narrow, but still... I got my last parts order in. Or well, the last one for now; I'm expecting a few more bricks to come in that could be added to this. It's about 98% complete; my last blink order was missing all the inverted slopes I paid for... and that was at least $2, so I'm expecting replacement bricks to show up or I leave negative feedback. I ordered extra in another order, so now my sub's only missing a few, but still, they're a necessity. I may tweak the design a bit between now and BrickFair. I'll come out right now and say it; I don't like the section between the front bridge and the big sphere in the middle. It's too... boring when compared to the rest of the sub. However, the whole functionality of the hinge doors opening calls for such blandness. And the hinge doors work wonderfully; I've got magnet connectors inside so that the sub can store up to 3 trans orange boxes with crystals in it. So if I want to spice up the middle design with windows and such (you can see that I've already tried) then I might have to lose on the hinge doors function. So is it a good compromise? Time will tell. Also, the extra vehicle underneath the large dome will need work. What I currently have is small and simple, but it leaves a lot of space underneath it that is otherwise inaccessible. So larger vehicles / mechs are still possible ideas. Otherwise, I am satisfied with the sub's outcome. Although it's built in sections, in connects very well, with only a few troubled areas in the middle (where there's the most stress on it, I believe). Now the question is... what next? Perhaps I should build an Aqua Sharks sub to rival this one. (Seriously, something that's black, blue, and trans orange, with more fins and weapons, but also perhaps only half as long. Eh, it's an idea for the future.) Anyway, at some point soon, I'll try to take more detailed pictures of it, maybe even post it in a topic. ( ) There's a lot of detail to be seen, and I wanna show it off.

    Brick Fair Locations

So, being officially paid up and stuffs, I was looking at what my brick badge will say. And I know some ideas have been thrown out about coming up with creative locations. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to set it to custom locations. I know some other people have set theirs to small countries, and if I went that direction I might go for the Falkland Islands (which I did a report on back in high school while everybody else in class chose bigger, more important countries). I dunno, any BrickFair attendees have ideas for themes we could do on our badges? I have enough old ones that I wanna get creative. Also, yes, BrickCon's system was easier. They said "What do you want on your first brick? Your second brick? Done."

    Sub W I P Part 2

I got some more parts orders in. They weren't big; they mostly contained a bunch of 2x8 yellow bricks, which I really needed. I have one more big parts order coming in, but even though I ordered it at the same time as the two that just came in, it has yet to ship out yet. Oh well. And the last order contains some crucial parts to add to certain sections. But until then, I can start building more of the sub. For the record, there are some stand-in pieces in here. Basically, anything that isn't yellow, black, trans dark blue, or trans neon orange is just a stand in until I get the same piece in the right color. This time, I gathered up a minifig crew for the sub. I have about 5 aquanaut torsos, and matching legs. To mix things up, I changed the color of the arms for each crewman/woman. Right now, I've got red, green, purple, pink, and orange arms on the characters. Sadly, I only have 3 white suits, so two of the crew have to stay inside the sub. Although in this picture, 4 of them are inside, so they don't really need their suits on. I am so far impressed with my component design. Each section of the sub fits together nicely, and my connection points are strong enough to hold it together. I know this because for a couple of sections, I'm missing the pieces to really connect it, and thus it is very loose. Sadface, but that will be fixed. Also, you can't tell how incomplete this sub is because you're only seeing one side of it. The other side is where all the missing sections are, which includes a couple of windows and propellers and such. There is one part of the design that I am disappointed with. The tail fins are only held in by three studs, and this makes them far more likely to fall off. I would normally try to reinforce it, but that would mess with the windscreen. So I can't really think of a good way to fix it. On the other hand, it looks good, so when it's on display I think I'll just leave it that way and hope nobody touches the tail. The Hero factory arms are another thing I'm trying out, since I wasn't able to add them into my digital design. Overall, I like the joints with Evo's yellow armor. I need to tweak the far ends of the arms to match the rest, but I do like how the claw turned out. They'll require some work, but I think the idea is good. Also, I've kind of given up on the idea of a mech and just made a small sub fit under the dome, similiar to the one used in this set. Actually, it's nearly identical, except I changed the colors to yellow. I can probably go on and on about this, but I'll zip it now. Hopefully I'll be able to post a completed version soon.

    Clip Art

For one of my new project, I will be including various character images to help tell a story. I want to do something different, so I was thinking about using clipart characters... but my current clipart library is limited. Anybody know a good place to find one for free that would have a lot of different people images in it?

    Tired

Tis been a loooooooong day. Longer than usual. Early morning group meet-up thingy, and then late night class. Normally I sleep in on Mondays. And if I could have my way, I'd sleep in everyday. The world really shouldn't start operating until after 11 AM. In Lego related news... um, my sub is still incomplete. But I have paid for BrickFair registration now. Add that to the plane tickets, and I happen to know a guy who knows a guy who knows that I know a guy who can drive us around DC. (And I suspect he also knows a few other guys, and gals for that matter). Next thing to pay for; hotel room. Also, I have three musketeers. Need one more. Also I have an idea for a sailor scene straight otta Monty Python. More later.

    In Crowd

Sometimes it infuriates me about how people form cliques and such and really do their best to distance others. High school is the prime example. I never seemed to fit in with any particular crowd even though I hung out with them: the popular kids in the AP classes, the drama students in the school play, the slacker students who sat in the corner during lunch. It was always like I was an outside observing, and if I tried to give input it was ignored or refuted. I didn't really encounter this in college at all, mostly because I didn't join up in groups. But I got it alot in work; I was the younger guy who wanted to do a good job, the other guys were somewhat goof offs that liked bending the rules a lot. (Heh, and funny thing is, the head park ranger said straight away that he'd never hire them again... and pretty much guaranteed me a job for this summer.) And of course you get it online too. And still, after some twenty years of living, I have still not found a way to fit in well with any such clique. So my blog is not aimed at a circular group of friends. I try not to disclude anybody for what they do or participate in. Rather, I diss on people based on the ways they think. Like people who are disrespectful, hurtful, hypocritical. I'm not saying I'm a prime example; at any given time I'm always degrading myself because I don't do things well besides procrastination and watching TV. (Which reminds me, I need to blog about a couple of news shows I've been watching. ) No, I'm not the best person around, and I don't expect you to be the best. But I would like to keep the worst out of my blog, so leave your undesirable characteristics behind or try and change for the better. No, this is not about that issue that's been going around the forums, which I was pretty much unaware of because I wasn't reading the topics and I've disabled signs. This comes from real life, and I felt like venting it out. I've leave this entry opened for comments for now, but if things go south I won't think twice about closing and deleting posts. Thank you for reading.

    Sub W I P Part 1

I got a parts order in. Roughly 400 pieces. I thought the $10 shipping was a little much, but turns out the shipping did[ cost that much... so I guess it's cool. Sadly, there were some complications. About 12 or so bricks weren't present. BUT the guy gave me a $1.50 refund and there were a few pieces which I didn't order, so I guess we'll call it even on those grounds. BUT then, some of the pieces were dirty. So I cleaned them best I could. And then some were chewed. And I concluded that if you buy cheap, you get cheap. I'm still a good 200 bricks away from having all I need to build this sub. However, I tried to get started on a couple of sections. Even so, when building them, I realized I was still missing a few crucial elements, so I hastily replaced them with what I had on hand... I'll pull them out for the final version once I order the right parts in the right colors. Thus, the two middle sections. My technic for connecting them together has worked out well; it's fairly stable but still comes apart easily for transport. I'm also impressed with the octagonal bricks on the bottom, which are working out well. (This is good, since they're going to be the ground support for the entire model) And, as you might guess, there's a lot of room beneath that dome, so now I'm thinking about how to build a good under mech / robot to fit in there. I still have a lot of pieces to get, and I kinda need money now, so I won't be ordering them any time soon (I am such a liar), but it's nice to have some of the model physically built now.

    Brick Fair

What he said. Boy, I was flip-floppy about whether I was going to go or not. Yeah, I'm still broke, even more now than usual, but hopefully by the time summer roles around my job will help make me less broke.
  17. Okay, first of all, I must give credit to CF for inspiring my to do this because he was building such a cool ship and I wanted one of my own. My theme is Aquanauts, and while I am far lacking of the pieces to construct this in reality, using a Lego CAD program let me work on my designs. Of course, this is still a WIP, and I would like any opinions on it. (Not that I'll listen to all of them... after all, I do want to keep some of the tacky portions that appeared in the set line back then... but I'm keeping an opened mind here) This is made up of 7 different sections; 5 main ones and two connecting slots. Overall, it is 101 studs long, normally 8 studs wide with a max of 40 studs at the tail, and a max of 19 bricks high. The Sections 1: The Ship's Bridge. I really want the three-way blue bulbs, but I admit it is a bit of a weird shape. 2: Storage Unit. The bulk of this design was based around the hinge doors that came with the original sets. This is designed for it to open up and have space for hanging magnetic boxes that store the crystals. It turned out to be much taller than all the other pieces, so the two connecting sections are on both ends of it to increase the flow of the design. Also, there's a ball-joint socket for an arm; more details on that below. 3: Dome. So far, this is just a body design meant to support the big glass dome. Ideally, I will be able to fit a smaller vehicle inside; possibly an underwater mech. I like how this design worked out. 4: Living Quarters. This is mostly a boxed in portion with the side windows. But I think it turned out alright. 5: The Tail. This is the one that's given me the most trouble. Ideally, I want the two tail points with compartments underneath the glass for people to hang out. I like that portion and then the tail wings with the propellers on them. But the problem is to get the two tail tips to converge back into the single body. I had some plates that work wonderfully for that. BUT I'm having trouble bulking up the plates. I have two basic designs: here and here. I'm not quite pleased with either, although I'm leaning towards the latter. (And FYI, those green bricks are supposed to represent a bent octagonal bricks that the CAD program doesn't include, so I made them stand out a bit to remind me when I do the parts count) Any advice on how to improve the tail would be greatly appreciated. To Be Added Arms: The original Aquanaut sets came with these flimsy hinge arms. As I went to rebuild my set, I found most of those pieces were broken. So with this size increase, I also plan to revamp the arms with a more modern technique; YES, ball and socket joints. Specifically, I'm thinking about Hero Factory joints with lots of Evo yellow armor. There will be two arms; one will end with a basic magnet connection, and the other will be a claw of some sort. I'm still working on that design. Mech: I need some basic vehicle to fit under the doom. Since I have limited space lengthwise but lots of room vertically, I am thinking about some sort of mini-deep-sea-walker. This design will probably come after everything else. Trans orange antennas: the original sets had a ton of these, and I plan to add plenty to this sub. However, I've only really added them in on the tail piece, so expect more trans orange to appear elsewhere More tubes: Again on the tail, you might see some yellow and black octagonal bricks underneath the main plates. I will be adding these to the bottoms of all the main sections, but I just haven't bothered yet on the program. Minifigs: there's plenty of space for them. However, all my old Aquanaut figs have been worn out. (Like, I didn't know a torso piece could split in half like that!) I have one that I purchased last year, but I'd need a bunch more if I want this ship to be run smoothly, so that's another thing to put on my list. The Parts: I have not bothered to try and organize the parts list and see what I have and what I need to get. I will have to buy a lot of the window pieces for sure, as well as the specialized side panels and octagonal tube bricks. And then I will have a bunch of little things, likes spears, knives, and antennas, and goodness knows how many black and yellow plates, bricks, and slopes. I don't think this would be an impossible project for me to undertake, but with the amount that I'll need to purchase, I can certainly not afford it now. Maybe in the summer after I've gotten a couple of pay checks. But for now, I'm still finalizing the design. Comments and suggestions for improvement would be appreciated.

    Nostalgic Older Sets

I got in the mood to rebuild some sets today. But this time, I wasn't interested in Bionicle sets, but rather old Aquazone sets I had gotten as a kid. These are among the first Lego sets I ever owned, and the yellow Crystal Explorer Sub was my first large set ever. The other green green Aqua Dozer was one of the first sets I saved up my money towards. (All previous ones had been gifts... ah, if only my parents knew that I would eventually get hooked to LEGO Bricks...) These are some of the coolest sets I owned from the 90s, but they haven't actually been in set form in my room for probably a decade. So I took it upon myself to try and rebuild them, using instruction scans I found online. In some cases, I had to work around missing or broken parts. For the yellow sub, I have long lost the original orange antennas, and most of the original arm joints have broken on me. To make up for this, I added in some Bionicle-ized arms. (On, and early on I accidentally snapped the main 6x16 baseplate in half... but luckily I have since acquired an extra that I used today). I was also missing a few green elements on the dozer (they might be hiding somewhere in my collection, but after hours of searching I could not find them) Additionally, I am low on all the silvery knives and spears that are supposed to be placed around the sets Yet in the end I was fairly surprised that I could find most of the pieces, and in good condition. (Some of the hinge pieces are starting to show wear from overuse, although by now they've survived over a decade of heavy play, so props to them!) And for the most part, the sets are fairly accurate to the originals. (Heck, the scoop on the still have the original stickers on it! Yeah, they're starting to peel off, but they've been there for at least 12 years!) I may buy a few replacement parts to help fix up these creations, since they've been some of my favorites. I'm also inspired to build my own Aquanaut sub, using the same yellow / black / dark-trans-blue color scheme. I have some ideas for making a really big one... but that will require a lot of planning, AND then I'd have to go purchase a bunch of specialized pieces on line. I've already spent a lot this year, and a big project like that is unlikely to happen. (Unless, of course, I don't go to BrickFair... but I've been looking at plane tickets and everything, so there's a lot of potential for me going... but then if I don't go, that'll be $500 I'd be saving... which I would then probably spend on textbooks next semester... blah, I need a steady income for just Lego bricks...) Anyway, for now, I have some slightly-revamped classic 90s sets on display in my room; what more could you ask for?

    Japanese Tsunami

Holy moly. I mean, I've seen other footage of tsunamis before, but the stuff they're getting in from Japan right now... that is amazing. And frankly a little scary. I do hope most people were able to get out of the way in time, since Japan does have its share of earthquakes and knows how to deal. But an 8.9... at some point, there's not much you can do if you have a 30 foot wave coming towards you. My heart goes out to those who are affected by this disaster. But it's not over yet. Now that big wave is headed in my direction. (Pacific Northwest)

    I Have A Pirate Ship

On a lighter note, yesterday I finally purchased a Lego Pirate Ship. Read one for more details... Yes, look on in envy! Gotcha! It's a neat little set. Good design, interesting game play, and plus I needed the 16x16 base plate for a MOC. I might do a better blog review of this later. I've kinda already scraped it for parts.
  21. Okay, I don't know all the details, but it looks like the only fatality on the US side of this natural disaster sparked by the 8.9 Japanese quake is some guy who got washed away on the Californian coast by the incoming tsunami. Yeah, it's sad, but it also shows that he was STUPID. I was watching the news this morning when the first couple of wave rounds struck the Oregon coast. There was a tot of effort put into evacuating people to higher ground, and the news people show many police officers patrolling the beach to keep everybody out of harms way. And then, minutes after what was considered the first wave washed on shore, there were people walking down to the wet sand on the beach. I changed the channel, and when I went back, the people were gone (likely were called back to shore) and an even larger wave was washing up the beach. And I guess the waves got even larger as the morning went on. So it wouldn't surprise me if the people who continued to hang out on the beach did get washed away. I don't speak about this as some annoying blogger with no experience with ocean waves on the Oregon coast. I HAVE been struck by a sneaker wave; I was playing chicken with the waves with a couple of friends, and we jumped on top of a log as one came in. What I remember is falling forward into the surging water, and when I resurfaced I was on the other side of the log, and have to resist the pullback as the waters receded. My friends and I were extremely lucky we survive that. We could've been swept all the way out to see, or we could've been pinned under the log we were climbing on, since that was also shifting in the water. The only reason we escaped that fate was because it was huge and we were next to the root-ball, which was anchored securely into the beach. But we could see other logs really tumbling in the waters. And that near death experience was caused by a sneaker wave, which is actually a common occurrence on the Oregon coast; lots of people get caught by those each year and there are fatalities. So when one hears that a tsunami wave is heading in, even if it's not estimated to be huge or anything, then they should have the smarts to not hang out on the beach. I am sad that the one guy got washed away, and my heart goes out to all the people in Japan who endured a far worst disaster. After seeing the footage of the tsunami over there, I can hardly think of a way some people could've escaped that wave, especially if they only had 10 minutes to flee after the quake hit. But, come on, those of us over hear had at least 10 hours of warning. We should know better than to play chicken with the Pacific Ocean. Because it usually wins.
  22. So I'm a fan of Chuck. And today's episode had a subplot involving Morgan trying to mature... kinda. Anyway, that's not important. Morgan is showing off some of his Star Wars figures that are placed on the mantelpiece. Not toys; collectibles. And next to the really big ones are some smaller things. But one got my attention; it was the Attack in Cairo Indiana Jones Lego set! So take that! Lego sets are in TV shows. And not just in kid's room; they're on the friggin mantelpiece! In the living room! In a spy's house! SO COOL! Sadly, no Bionicle figures in sight. Maybe next week.

    Current W I Ps

I went out of my way to build some things today. For once, I'm dealing with system, and half of my "building" was also sorting the parts. I have a couple of projects that I wanted to work on. Three of them are mostly finished, although some tweaking is in order. I'm working to get some better photos of them, but I have a few WIP shots, so I might as well post those. And regardless, these will probably be at BrickFair, if I go or not. (If I don't go, then I'll just send them in) Battle of Helm's Deep: Legolas Surfing Down the Steps Easy one of the best moments in the whole battle sequence. I wanted to recreate it in Lego, using my two elf figs. (I got a second one recently) The bulk of the design process was in finding a way to create the stares... and I thought the pieces I used made it work well enough. The rest was just stacking up my supply of light grey bricks until I had some form of a wall to go behind the steps. And then I put in some characters. The men and elves were easy enough, but I had to be creative with my dwarf and orc, since I don't have any of those figs. (And I would like to buy some, but they're expensive!) This is mostly finalized. I did add another layer of bricks to increase the height of the wall, since the pictured version seems kinda low (especially if a character wants to walk underneath the archway). Also, if at some point I can acquire an orc or dwarf fig, those will replace the ones in the current pict. But the surfing elf is going to stay. King Kong As soon as I saw that the Gorilla suit guy was being released, I knew this scene had to happen. And I have seen some people already use this idea and put their Gorilla Suit guy on their Empire State Building model. But now it's my turn. Since I don't have the official model, I had to design my own. And then I added a biplane to attack him. I have been told that the proportions are off, and yes they are, but I don't feel like changing them, and they work well enough. Of course, there's a lot to improve on the pictured image, and I've already done that. I tried to reconstruct the tower to look more like a skyscraper and less like a tan rocket. I took the wedges on the sides and used them to expand the base out front, giving it some more depth. The plane has also been improved slightly, mostly because I found the piece that I didn't have when I took this first pict. Additionally, I included a police car at the base in the same scale as the plane. And to really make the scene, I included a camera man, making this model a movie set rather than a movie scene. ... okay, yeah, I need to take a picture of the finished model, but this one here gives you the basic idea. Warehouse 13: Dark Vault and Gooery Sorry, this one has no picture yet. Anyway, I created some WH13 figs for BrickCon, but the Warehouse scene I created was cluttered and not too appealing. This time, I put more effort into the scene instead of the characters. It's a two level vignette featuring two scenes from the season one episode "Breakdown"... basically, the Dark Vault (on top) and the gooery. The gooery is fairly basic; I attached a few gears to the walls (and they all move together) but then I used the yellow tube from Meltdown to clog it up... remaking the silly string incident from the episode. The top layer is split by a wall and doorway. On one end, there's the door to the vault (with the Ninjago Skull stickers on it) and a handful of dodgeballs bouncing around to pummel the next person who walks by. On the inside of the Dark Vault are the creepiest artifacts that I could get together, including the Alice mirror. I've placed my Pete, Myka, and Claudia figs in various places on the model. My original design for this had a lot of space around it, which let me put in more artifacts but which also make the model unstable and top heavy. So I shrunk it down to be on a 8x16 base and about 10 bricks tall. It's a little cramped now... but that kinda works for the scenes. And I tried to take pictures... but they didn't turn out, so until next time. I'm also considering making the Escher vault from the Season 2 premier. It would incorporate the Artie, McPherson, and HGWells figs I made, and would have all sorts of crazy stairways and such. BUT I don't quite have a solid design down, and I don't think I have enough good bricks to successfully pull it off. But BrickFair isn't for another... many months, so there's still time to work on this, and come up with new projects! Okay, that's the end of my MOCing ramblings.
  25. So my next animation assignment will require me to create a "How To" animation. Basically it has to be instructions / tips for certain situations, like how to change a tire or fix a leaky faucet. My idea will be "How To Survive A Raptor Attack." Some of my ideas include: Fortify windowsBe aware that raptors can open doorsKnow raptors are faster than you, so run at the right angle to maximize survival timeGet the raptors eaten by T-rexes (coming soon, how to survive a T-rex attack)Don't let the raptors get lightsabers Obviously there will be lots of Jurassic Park and xkcd references. But I could always use some more good ideas.
