  1. I'm writing this entry during a free period at school. This is for anyone who plays AP, was planning to play it, or just wants to offer some friendly advice from one RPer to another. In short, I know that AP was a failure, but I had a lot of stuff planned for it before the downtime ruined everything. I still have all that stuff planned and I have a huge post that I'm almost finished writing up. But now I'm at a crossroads. I can take this post in two directions. Either I let the game continue to limp along in hopes of it picking up interest, or I can call my shots, throw in the towel, and end it with the biggest fireworks show an RPG has ever seen. My decision will be my own, but I want to hear your thoughts as well. Sincerely, -EF
  2. Vote Abyssal Plain in RPGC14! The finals are upon us. AP needs every one of your votes to succeed! The fate of the Matoran Universe rests in your hands.. and votes.
  3. Part 1 Part 2 The black water beckons as the light is quenched. There is only one way to go. Down. Step into the abyss, where there is nothing down below... Explore the world of Mahri-Nui as the Undercity is filled with turmoil. Join one of many different factions as you fight for freedom and power. This is the last stand of the Matoran race and all have been doomed to the abyss.. Read. Review. VOTE!

    How's It Going?

So, as RPGC 14 fast approaches, one has to think about the many possible amazing entries that will be going up around that time. June will be a rather sporadic month for me, so I won't be around to analyze the contest day by day. Inside, I'm still debating whether or not I should re-enter Abyss. Here's the situation: - I'm leaving homeschool, and going to an actual highschool next school year. This will dampen my time on BZP. - The school year starts in July because Arizonans are werd like that. - Abyss may not win. My question to you guys is thus: How do you think Abyss is doing right now? Do you think I should re-enter? Do you think I have a chance of reclaiming my title? I'll still make an independant decision on this. I'd just like to know what you think.

    Imagine

My new RPG idea. Imagine Today's dreams are tomorrow's realities.. What you guys know (rather, what I decided to tell): -Set in 2009 -Relates to 1960s -Involves tourism in a way -Utililzes Time Travel -Takes place in three places What I know: -Everything So if you want to add to the first list you can ask questions. I'll be taking them here, AIM, and the RPG Topic. Begin speculation!
  6. I posted an entry a while back about the sorry state of COT RPGs. It was mostly about the conformist attitude that seemed to be going on in COT. Now a new problem has arisen. Let's face it, the once glorious COT RPGs are now crumbled shells of their former selves. RPGs are dying left and right. The RPG giant, Reality, is closing its doors soon. Supposedly blockbuster hits like IF, Outbreak, Downfall, and Demonic Beginnings have all crashed and burned. What happened? Well, I think it's a combination of the rollback and a significant lack of originality among RPers, plus add the fact that many will be rushing to study for their finals, and we have ourselves a situation. The Rollback caused great damange to the RPGs. Reality lost more than half it's data, while entire series like Outbreak, or games like Pokemon were obliterated. There is also an originality crisis amongst RPers. It seems like every game can be compartmentalized into this category, or that designation. The only game that bucks this trend is Reality, which is dying because it's creator has left BZP. Finally, the time of year plays a part. With finals approaching, life catches up to people this season. When life catches up, you have to drop extra baggage, and RPGs are one of them. So the question, my fellow RPers, is this. What can we do to bring back the glory days of COT RPing? Who killed Cock Robin COT?

    Goodbye If =(

I just reported IF for closure. It was a good idea but failed due to a multitude of factors. Not the least of which was me. I may try again later, but for now, join me in the funeral procession and in the hope that every new game will be better than the last. Goodbye IF

    *gloats*

MWAHAHAHAHA! After months of preparation, my victory is nearly complete. I have won the RPG Contest Now I just have to wait until it ends >_> Looks like my cheating device worked this time. Last time, I tried pressing the win button and it broke half way through the finals, leaving me in fourth place. These win devices are on sale at Wal-Mart. You can see a picture here. I think B6 caught me sending one to Robo via UPS, and that's why he was DQed. Good thing 6 didn't realize who sent it. I forgot to add the return address on the package
  9. Here's a little poem I wrote about the 13th BZPower RPG Contest. I plan to write one about every contest here after. Try and find the mentions to all 30 contest entries hidden in the words. SHADOW ENTITY Who can be trusted to carry on? I can’t break my strong chains The shadows will reign I’m riding the night with a fire within My heart’s door is shut No one can get in There are walls all around me I’m the shadow entity I invade in the night It’s your darkest day Eclipsing your fears with this infinite pain It’s an era of crisis in this barren land There’s insurrection, and uprising More war is at hand There are walls all around me I’m the shadow entity There’s a new regime now I reign in your heart. As your soul falls into the abyss of the dark A land built on chaos Twilight, it will stay Your great coffin is ready There are walls all around me I’m the shadow entity As I fight for survival, the wind blows with hate Is it really my destiny, my trail, my fate? I have walked this bleak place for days upon days It’s a province of shadow A school of hate My heart’s door is shut No one can get in There are walls all around me I’m the shadow entity -EF
  10. Head here to vote for the next three Bionicle RPGs. Thanks B6 for getting these polls up.

    Blaargh!

May I draw your attention to this utter copy cat. Nevermind how amazing the RPG listed there is, or how good the creator is at RPGs. Only focus on the fact that said creator ripped off my blog entry! And please don't vote for Robo's RPG unless you vote for mine as well  I'm glad we reached an agreement. -EF
  12. Robo killed George Washington as noted in the afformentioned link. Well, technically I made the killing post, but Robo's char did the work. It was all very simple. Easiest assassination in history.
  13. We're only waiting for B6 to get off his freakin plane Now, to make one final sales pitch. My RPGC13 entry is known as Abyss. Below is a quick summary of the game. The full version can be seen by clicking the banner. In Abyss players will explore the underground world of the Undercity in the midst of an emerging civil war. The Matoran immigrated to the Undercity 500,000 years previously in order to escape Makuta's wrath. Now they have evolved to more perfectly fit their environment. Their entire history has been forgotten, and the three virtues no longer hold any place in their hearts. It is up to the players to dive into this world and bring back (or not) unity, duty, and destiny to the Matoran. The Undercity is pictured above, but players will also be able to expand and traverse the innards of the planet. Highlights: -Underground setting. -Evolved Matoran with interesting abilities. -Enhancers and PEAs add diversity and power to the Matoran. -The Player Driven Story allows for non linear, player created plotline. Players may follow the main plot or choose to strike out on their own. Special thanks to all who made this possible: Crimson Jester- For coming up with a much better title. Kagha- For the wonderfully beautiful map. Taka Kun- For giving inciteful criticism and support. Robo- For consenting to be staff amid all his IRL struggles and RPG cutbacks. And to every person who chooses to vote for this game I give my heartfelt thanks. You are the ones who will truly make this dream a reality. Thank you for that. -EF
  14. In case anyone’s wondering: I do plan to start the NRPG again. Since I saved the first post in Microsoft Word I can always just repost it (once it gets approved of course). The main problem (but actually not a very serious one if you think about it) is the lack of NRPG v. 3 or 4. That means we pretty much have to continue using just our memories. This also means I can’t finish the Naruto RPG timeline since I can’t see what happened in v.3, so some of the newer players might not know what happened before they joined. Still, I worked really hard on my Project Revolution storyline and I’d like to see it through, so we’re going to do the best we can and continue RPing in the Naruto RPG.

  16. Ratings systems for RPGs rarely work, mostly because RPGs are hard to rate. Personal opinion plays a large factor in the final outcome of the game’s rating. Let me go through a popular rating system and point out its inherent flaws. Writing Story (20) NPCs and Regions (15) Style (10) Technical Grammar (5) Rules (15) Format (15) Bonus Originality (10) Look (5) Bonus (5) On the surface this rating system looks great. I beg to differ. This system relies heavily on personal bias towards an RPG and probably won’t reflect the technical aspects of the game. Problems with this system: • The rating points are too large, sometimes assigning high grades to low quality games. For example, it is still possible to score above 80% and have a zero on Story. This does not inspire the GM to work harder for a better score. Tthey assume they already have a good one. This, to me, shows that it is too drawn out. • Seemingly extraneous ratings. Some things are almost exactly the same. In fact one reviewer couldn’t tell the difference between look and format. Bonus is also extraneous. If they earn a Bonus, it should have no impact upon the out of 100 rating and instead should be a completely extra addition. • Personal bias is inserted too often. Unfortunately, this is unavoidable with any type of review. It is my belief that a more compact and precise ratings system, where every lost point truly hurts, is more efficient. I have designed such a system. Story (15) This is a collective score of everything in the category under it. All scores in the Story category are added together to get the Story score. The same is true for each of the other categories. -Writing(10): How does the story flow together? Does the GM use correct grammar? Is the story believable? Is it entertaining? -NPCs(5): The main question here is, do the NPCs expand the story? Are the detailed? Are they believable? Gameplay(25) -Factions(10): What groups are in the game? Are there any groups? -Locations(10): Tell us about the environment. Is this someplace we’ve seen before or is it a whole new world? -Technical(5): This portion is for rating the rules and other technical portions of the game. Anything new or interesting would go here. Presentation(20) Initial Reaction(5): Is it eye catching? Does it contain a banner? Are you automatically sucked in or is the first thing you think, meh? Use of BBCode(5): Does the GM make a pleasing atmosphere of pleasant colors, bolds and underlines? Formatting(5): Is each section put together in a easy to navigate way? Or does the RPG feel scattered and unconnected? Grammatical(5): Are paragraphs spaced neatly, or squashed together like jelly? Does the GM use proper grammar? Is everything spelled correctly? IMO this is a much better system than the other one. Each point lost hurts much more and makes the GM actually thing about what they did wrong. This is my kind of system.

  18. The stars. The nightlights of a darkened sky. For centuries they have done nothing but good for us. They guide us in our journeys. They light our path when we cannot. They foretell of things to come. For all time Matorankind has been enthralled by the stars. Times have changed. Makuta’s reign of terror swept over Mata-Nui. For over two thousand years the Matoran fought bravely against the Makuta and his Rahi. They were driven and slaughtered until only one option remained. Led by Ta-Koro, the Matoran escaped into the ground, leaving the lights of the stars behind them. There, they hoped, they would be safe from Makuta. The Matoran created an extensive tunnel network. They had all that they needed for survival, but not for life. Slowly, but surely, those who remembered the world above died. The culture of years past slipped away. The Matoran became more technologically capable, and the Undercity grew more advanced than even Metru-Nui. What’s worse, they forgot the stars, they forgot Makuta, and they forgot the three virtues they had fought for. Five hundred thousand years passed in relative peace. Makuta was regarded as a mere myth. The Matoran lived in happiness and harmony. Until, that is, one Koro went too far. During one of their expeditions to find more lava, the Ta-Koronans delved too deep. They burst open an underground cave and unleashed the horror within. A pillar of black flame burst up through the roof of the caves and into the Overworld. The top came crashing down and the lava farmers struggled to escape. Only one survived. The next Inter-Koro council meeting was tense. Reports of strange Rahi were surfacing all through the Undercity. There was a water shortage. One by one the Koros turned on each other. The Onu-Matoran refused to supply Ga-Koro with protodermis if they didn’t receive water. Le-Koro blamed the Rahi attacks upon the Ta-Koronans, because their miners had opened up a hole to the world above. Ko-Koro withdrew itself from the council without another word, and Po-Koro was left to fend for itself amongst an emerging war. Whatever happened to Unity, Duty, and Destiny? Civil war has sprung up and you are caught in the crossfire. The virtues are dead. You must rely upon your wits and your strength to survive. We have forgotten our past, the present is in shambles, and we might not live to see the future…
  19. In RPG Topic: ZOMG Edition Bunda asked whether a Mass Effect RPG was viable. I told him it was. I told him the market for Sci-FI RPGs was open and that ME would do well. Oh how wrong I was. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «Super/Sci-Fi-22 75% Mecha-2 6% Sandbox-2 6% Fantasy-5 13% WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE? When 75% of all your RPGs deal with superpowers and space ships you know you have a problem. COT Role Players! We need to expand our outlook. An RPG is not great because it has "the ownedage powrz". People are obviously tiring of these forms of RPGs. Whenever someone creates a new game, people click on it to see if it's good. Then they see the words "In the year 2233, American scientists....". They promptly backspace as fast as possible. The majority of RPGs in COT are FAILING! They are failing because they are not ORIGINAL. Currently, the most successful RPGs in COT are Reality, Heroes, To Save The World, and Transformers. Reality has been around for ages and has the sandbox factor. Heroes is based off a popular series. Like Reality, TSTW has been there for ages. And Transformers is riding off the success of the previous RPG. These are 4 RPGs. There are 29 total RPGs in COT. We can do better than this. I know we can. I want all RPers to think up something original. That is why I have decided not to approve RPGs unless they bring something new to the table and are not just a rehash of last year's fodder. I encourage the other judges to stand with me and save COT from emminent doom!

  24. What makes a good and sucsessful RPG? The question is often tossed around and no one can seem to find the answer. I've managed several RPGs. I've played in even more. After observing most of them I think I can boil a good RPG down to five principles that go hand in hand with each other to form the skeleton of an RPG. Activity: Probably the single most important aspect of an RPG. If an RPG is not active it will not survive. Activity means story promoting ICs, not just enough OOCs to carry it past the revival deadline. An inactive RPG has no heart and runs on mere life support. Clarity: Clarity means well thought out and easy to understand. The opening post is the main object of clarity, because it has to detail every aspect of an RPG and cater to every player. An unclear RPG becomes confusing, hard to follow, and subsequently hard to manage. Unclear RPGs have a severe learning disablity. Interest: If players are not interested in your RPG it will not gain activity and thus not survive. Even the most well thought out and clear RPGs will not succeed if the player is not enthusiastic about your concept, story, or design. Interest is the body and head of an RPG. Rule Following: Every RPG must comply with the rules of the forum it is contained within. But this extends far beyond that. Without a solid set of rules or a good reward and punishment system the RPG will be unable to move without disorder and chaos. Making sure that players follow the rules and that the RPG management does as well is essential for the RPG's survival. This is the basic structure of an RPG, the arms and legs. Play Promoting: An RPG is a playable story, key word: playable. Being playable means that the RPG can advance and become the story it was meant to be. If the rules, story, etc. do not promote playability then Players will loose interest, activity will decline..... Playablity is the hands and feet of and RPG, for without it you cannot move or shape the game. And so we've built our RPG Person. Any RPG that contains all of these parts will succeed. As long as the GM keeps managing it and so forth. Of course that doesn't mean an RPG without one of these parts will die immediately. A person can live with a disability or without legs. But they will never be as sucsessful as the RPGs that contain every part. Happy RPing!
  25. As some of you know, I'm one of the mods of the Naruto RPG over in the Completely Off Topic forum. After having done this for a while, I have a pretty good idea of what I like in an RPer and what I don't like. This will be a short series of blog entries in which I outline exactly what I expect in an RPer in the Naruto RPG I help run, and what I don't expect. The RPG Etiquette Series—Examples you should (or shouldn't) follow: Chapter 1 First, let's start with the problem kid. This player constantly makes trouble for the mods and players alike, alienating the other members with his or her negative attitude and immature role-playing. This person is the sort that will usually get banned pretty soon after joining. The problem kid's profile: Everyone makes mistakes with their profiles, it usually can't be helped. But what differentiates a good role-player from a bad one, is when the player doesn't change their mistakes after asked. You can usually tell by reading their character profile that they just skimmed the rules. As you can see, this member clearly didn't spend much time on their profile. They just saw the title of the RPG, thought, "this might be fun", and scrolled down to the profiles, completely ignoring the rules and other important stuff. Then they skipped the instructions telling how to make each part of their profiles, probably because it was too long, and just added stuff in. Let's dissect this member's profile and take a closer look. Name: narutomaru Here we have the first problem. "Narutomaru" by itself isn't a bad name, if a good member came to us with that name we'd probably approve it. The problem comes when the member disregards our rules. We asked that the clan name come first and the given name last, but the member apparently didn't bother to read that one simple sentence. We're not even sure if "narutomaru" is his first name or last name. Age: 12 Nothing wrong with that. Rank: the highest one Now, there is something wrong with that, and you can probably tell what it is, so I don't need to explain. It's just further proof this guy didn't read the rules. Or follow common sense, for that matter. Personality: just like naruto Uh, no. Those of you in the NRPG havee probably all had me tell you to make your personalities longer, when you yourselves submitted your profiles, so you know what's wrong here. At this stage I'd be pretty frustrated. By now I can tell this member is just being lazy, and that they didn't just make a few innocent mistakes. This guy clearly doesn't care enough to read the rules. Appearance: like an average person Lol, What? Fighting style/skills: rasengan justu, chidori justu, raikiri justu, clone justu, all the fire ones, flying, the justu that makes a giant toad, ninetales, and the one the green guy does Oh man. *facepalm* I'd probably think this would be pretty funny, except my pride has been hurt here. Advent, Neon Bird, Greed, and I all spent way too much time writing this up for it to be disrespected in such a way. I'm seriously considering just stamping this unapproved and ignore the rest of the profile, but I'll read through the rest of it for formalities. I've already decided not to list out the person's mistakes, there are way too many for me to list. I'll just tell him or her to read the rules. Weapons: shrukin and those knive things i dont no wut ther called Now, there's nothing wrong with not knowing what kunai are called, we all forget sometimes and it's hard to remember all the technical details of a fictional world. But at this point it's clear this person hasn't just forgotten, he/she really doesn't care. Definitely not someone I'd want in this RPG. List of jutsu: the same as the ones in the fiting style More proof this guy doesn't know what he/she's talking about. You're supposed to put the list of jutsu here, not in the fighting style. Come on, read the instructions, people! It's not that hard! Clan: susakes clan, ther the ones with the red eyes Pathetic. Now let's say this member somehow gets his/her profile approved (don't ask me how). And the first post he/she makes is: Ooookay…*facepalm* I would probably have told him/her not to put the rasengan (and all of the other jutsu too, there's no way I would let him/her keep those) in the profile, and here he/she goes, using it again. That's a warning right there. Second. No "IC" or "OOC"…though coming from him/her, I wouldn't be surprised. If this guy didn't bother reading the profile rules, why would he/she read the general rules? Still, that's another warning right there. Also notice the bad grammar and spelling I intentionally used in there. No punctuation at all, no capitalization, he/she even switches points of view in the post, going from third to first person and back again. I've saved the most obvious for last. GOD-MODDING. Where did the kegafakure whatever thing come from? Narutomaru's supposed to be an Academy student, how'd he stop him? And doing all that in one post? This member would get three warnings right away. And on his/her first post, too. *facepalm* Let's say I intervene. My post: The problem kid reads this post and is just mad. He/she doesn't realize their mistake, so they post a flamey response. Okay, so this guy just badmouthed me. I'm mad, so I want to punish him/her. But, you know, anger aside, this guy did just break the rules again. I have a reason. My post: Problem kid's next post: And then he/she goes on to IC again: *facepalm* Problem kid gives a lousy excuse for his/her flamey and spammy post, but not only that he/she goes on to do it again. How infuriating. My post: Problem kid, of course, ignores my latest post (because it's too much trouble for him/her to read), and posts again. You know the drill. I post again, telling the problem kid to quit it. He/she finally notices my post after I bold it, underline it, and make it red. His/her response: My response: Surprisingly, the problem kid listens to me. After the week's over, the problem kid comes back. I've been dreading this day, but I'll see what happens. Problem kid's post: Hmm…well, you know, it's still bad, but compared to the other posts? A huge improvement. I'm actually a bit proud. And then the next day problem kid deteriorates again. My post: Notice how I'm being a bit unfair and mean in my last sentence. I'll address that in a future section of my RPG Etiquette series. Anyway, problem kid responds with a spammy post. But before that, let's say Neon Bird posts with a Chuunin exams post. *facepalm* WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO!!!!!??? I try to keep calm and tell the problem kid to stop. Problem kid's response: I'd probably just report problem kid's posts to an admin by this point and just get him/her banned. So, there you have it. The [short] career of a problem kid. Now you know what not to do in an RPG. Chapter 2 coming soon
