This topic is for discussion of rock / alternative rock bands (because alternative rock is too vague a genre to merit its own topic in my opinion). For the record, other genres like progressive rock, pop rock, punk rock, etc. aren't meant to be discussed here; indie rock and hard rock bands are pretty close to rock / alternative rock, though, so you might as well discuss some of them here, too.The main bands within the genres I listen to at the moment are Coldplay, Muse, U2, Switchfoot, OneRepublic, Counting Crows, Linkin Park, The All-American Rejects, and 30 Seconds to Mars (they're kind of rock / alternative rock).I find Radiohead a little overrated -- I think their album OK Computer was good but not great -- but I'll nevertheless try listening to their album Kid A, seeing as I seem to be into well-placed synths and sound effects at the moment. Linkin Park's albums Minutes to Midnight and A Thousand Suns are underrated in my opinion (but I dislike the profanity they've adopted). No hating or flaming, please. Discuss away.

So... I got Mylo Xyloto, Coldplay's new album today, and I have to say I really like it. First of all, if you listen to it all in a row, it tells the story of two lovers through the songs. Another cool perk about listening to it as an album is the fact that there are three "interlude" songs, each of about 40 seconds, that serves to break up the story and provide transitions. My favorite songs on the album, however, are songs 3 and 4, Paradise and Charlie Brown. I believe summarize the more surreal/melancholy side of Coldplay's music, which I happen to like very much. The album art is also very interesting, and I think it reflects the "theme" of the album, if you will. It's very clean on the outside, but inside the M and the X there is a complicated sea of color, which relates to the album's "window" into a possible life story. I don't know if that's how you all will see it, but that's how I look at it. And as an added bonus, the music video for Paradise is both funny and sad at the same time. So, that's my little music review for today. -CM
