  1. “There. That’s Merlin’s house.” Riku pointed just down the street to a plain-looking door, cut into the same grey and yellow stone as everything else in this part of the city. Cocking her head, Kairi asked, “Are you sure? How can you tell these places apart?” As discreetly as possible, Riku checked the piece of paper in his hand. “No, this is definitely it. You, uh…might want to knock first, though…” Kairi smirked. “I see…” “He’s right,” Mickey said, nodding. “I was here not too long ago. Merlin’s here, and I bet he’s already got everything set up for you.” He paused to turn towards her. “Kairi, you’ll be in good hands! We’ve gotta get going, but if you need anything, Merlin or the Three Good Fairies can get you in touch with Master Yen Sid in a snap. I hope your training goes swell!” “Thanks, Your Majesty,” Kairi said. She wasn’t entirely sure how to act, so she bowed a little just to be safe. Facing Riku next, she said, “When you find Master Aqua, come let me know, alright?” Riku nodded. “We’ll be back before you know it.” “Oh? Sounds like I should hurry if I want to be an official Keyblade Wielder by then.” “Heh. I’m sure you’ll blast through the lessons in no time. If anything, we should hurry so you don’t have enough time to get bored.” Kairi giggled, but ended up casting a sideways glance at the house. “Well, I doubt it’ll be boring…” Riku frowned. Before he could say anything, however, Mickey said, “Welp, we’re off! Next stop, the Realm of Darkness!” “Huh? Oh, right.” Riku gave Kairi one last look. She smiled, so he turned and headed back the way they had come with Mickey. Once they were gone, Kairi’s smile faded in an instant. She looked over her shoulder at the door, shuffled towards the edge of the street, and then came to a stop. Her gaze slowly drifted upward. It had been a very long time since she’d been here in Radiant Garden—not since she’d been cast into the sea between worlds as a child. She didn’t count the time Maleficent had used her and the other Princesses to open the Final Keyhole, since the world was very different then and she hadn’t even been in her own body for the majority of it. Her memories of the place had grown quite hazy after so long. Even just being here, though, she felt a certain sense of nostalgia not unlike when she had been able to return to Destiny Islands after its destruction. Just like that time, it had an oddly bitter taste to it. Kairi shook her head and leaned back against the closest building. So much had happened over the last two or three years, and it wasn’t over yet. She was eager to start training so that she could help put a swift end to all this chaos…but, at the same time, she was very hesitant. She trusted Riku, of course. If he said Lea could be trusted, then there wasn’t really any reason to worry, she told herself. Still, she might’ve listened to herself a bit better if he or Sora were there with her. But it was alright. She understood. Riku had to find Master Aqua in the Realm of Darkness, and she certainly didn’t want to delay that. After hearing the lost Master described, Kairi had remembered meeting someone similar a long time ago—here in Radiant Garden, actually—so she wanted to meet her again to be sure. And Sora…well, she hadn’t even gotten to see him when she went to Yen Sid’s tower, but she was sure he was doing something important. Kairi sighed. She had really wanted to see Sora, especially after hearing what had happened to him during the exam. If he needed someone to talk to about the trouble he’d gotten into, she wanted to be there for him. If only he hadn’t had to take that dangerous exam… But no, it was fine. She understood. Sora and Riku had to take the exam to be ready for what came next, to rescue those who were lost and to fight Xehanort again if need be. And Riku had been there, plus all his other friends, to bring him home. Well…all of his friends except for her, of course. She had been waiting back on the Islands. Kairi slowly slid down until she was sitting on the pavement. It had been such a shock to her, hearing that so much had happened in the time they’d been gone; if only she’d been there with them, or at least with the King and Donald and Goofy, so that she could have stayed informed. If only she had been close enough to know what was going on. She wished she could have been included in the ordeal somehow. But, really, she understood. It was dangerous, and Sora and Riku needed to know she was safe. She still couldn’t even summon her Keyblade on her own—not that she hadn’t tried again and again, but as she was now she knew she wouldn’t have been able to take care of herself, much less be of any use to them. The only thing she could do was give them the peace of mind of knowing that she was waiting back at Destiny Islands. She shrank inward. “Every day”, she remembered saying. Every day, she and Sora and Riku would be together, just like they had always used to be, before everything had become so complicated. But they had barely been home when news of some new adventure arrived, and they both ran off without her. And they were still running, stopping only to drop on her the immense expectations of quickly learning how to wield the Keyblade in order to save the entire Realm of Light, when until now they’d done everything possible to keep her away from any sort of fight. She understood. And she was so, so tired of just being understanding all the time. Kairi just wanted to be with her best friends again. Ever since the destruction of the Islands, she’d been almost constantly alone, sometimes at home, and sometimes as someone else’s prisoner. Sora and Riku would come to her rescue when she was in danger, but once that was over, they were off again, saving someone else, fighting someone new, and apparently not willing to consider letting her go with them. No matter how much she understood their reasons, it still hurt being abandoned over and over. And she couldn’t help but think that neither of them had a clue she felt that way. That only made the pain worse. She had hoped that things could be different now. She was going to learn to use her Keyblade, finally learn to do what they did and fight alongside them, so that they would be together no matter what happened. But just like that, they were off again. It was almost like they suddenly remembered her because it was convenient. She hated to think that way, but that didn’t make the feeling stop. And now, here she was, unceremoniously dumped into the custody of four people she’d never met before along with someone who had kidnapped her not too long ago, knowing that if she didn’t close the ever-widening gap between where she was and where Sora and Riku were (and fast), it could mean the doom of millions of innocent people. She didn’t know how to even begin approaching that. It was overwhelming. The pressure, the loneliness…but despite it all, this was her chance. Her only chance. If she could succeed here, then she could be with her friends again. They wouldn’t have any reason to leave her behind, and even if they tried to, there wouldn’t be anything they could do to stop her from going with them. But, if she failed… Kairi shook her head. No. If this is my only chance, then I definitely won’t waste it. I’ll master the Keyblade, and I’ll help beat Xehanort, and then I won’t let those two out of my sight ever again. She took a deep breath. Just a little longer, and I won’t have to be alone ever again. She got to her feet and walked over to Merlin’s door. After hesitating one last time, she knocked, and a few seconds later a bearded man in gray-blue robes answered. “Uh, yes? Can I help you?” “H-Hello,” Kairi greeted. “I was looking for Merlin? Master Yen Sid sent me to—“ “Ah, yes of course!” the man interrupted. “You must be Kairi! Come in, my dear, come in—we’d best get started right away.” He went back inside, leaving the door open. Kairi tentatively stepped in after him. She tried to look around, but walls of books blocked her view; the old man (presumably Merlin) was halfway around the corner of one such barrier, talking excitedly to someone. When he came back around, three women floated out behind him, coming to a stop just in front of Kairi. “So this is her!” said the one in red. “Oh, aren’t you just adorable?” “Your timing is perfect!” said one in green. “We couldn’t decide, so we wanted to—“ “Now, now,” interrupted the woman in blue. “First things first, we should introduce ourselves.” “Oh, yes, you’re absolutely right,” agreed the one in red. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Kairi! The three of us are here to help Merlin train you. My name is Flora.” “I’m Fauna,” said the woman in green. “And I’m Merryweather,” said the one wearing blue. Kairi looked from one to the other, hoping she could keep their names straight. “Oh. It’s nice to meet you too! I’m really grateful that you’re all helping me like this.” “No thanks necessary, child,” Merlin said. “Now, if you’ll just—“ “Before we get started, though,” Fauna said, stepping forward. “We’ve been working on some new clothes for you. Since your friends all have garments imbued with our magic, it only seemed right to make some for you as well.” “But, we’ve hit a bit of a snag,” Merryweather said. “You see, we couldn’t agree on a good color. Personally, I think you’d look lovely in blue.” Fauna huffed. “She’s look much more darling in green!” “It’s always like this,” Flora sighed. “So, we wanted to ask you, Kairi. What color would you like us to make your new clothing?” “You’re asking me…?” Kairi muttered. She glanced over the three fairies and Merlin as they attentively awaited her answer. Kairi smiled. “Well, lately I have been thinking of buying something in red.” Flora grinned triumphantly, while the other two fairies exchanged a glance. “Well, if that’s what you want, that’s what we’ll do,” Fauna said. Merryweather leaned forward and said, “But if you ever change your mind, just let me know, and I can change it to blue in an instant.” “Alright, ladies, you heard her,” Flora said. “Come on now!” Kairi watched the three of them move a half-step away and ready their wands, while Merlin mumbled to himself as he flipped through a book. While she still didn’t really know anything about these people, she could feel that her nervousness was already starting to ebb away. For the first time, she thought she might actually enjoy her time here. “Are you ready, dear?” Flora asked. Grinning, Kairi nodded. “Yeah. I’m ready!”
  2. I'm going to need some time to put into words how unbelievably happy this makes me. For now just watch, I'll edit this later with more detailed thoughts. But first things first, look at Sora, Donald, and Goofy. They look like constraction sets, MAYBE...?! EDIT: OKAY SO -The trailer starts showing bits in Olympus and Twilight Town. We see Sora using a new shooter-style attack while rail-grinding, and some combination of Shotlock and Flowmotion to ascend a series of blocks. The dual gun Keyblade transformation, now named Double Arrowguns, reappears, and now shifts Sora’s outfit to blue, which we haven’t seen in III before. Seems this is a magic-focused form? Well, the super cannon upgrade is now called Magic Launcher, so…probably. I give Wisdom Form a lot of crud, but it still has some nostalgia for me, so yeah, I’m glad to see the blue threads back. -The Rock Ogre Heartless is on-screen, and it still looks awesome. -Aaaaaaaaaah, I love this. I love this so much. I’ve wanted a Toy Story world ever since I started playing Kingdom Hearts, and it looks gorgeous—I know they’ve been saying the Kingdom Shader is designed to make worlds look just like their respective movies, but it really does! I love it! -And again: Sora, Donald, and Goofy look like constraction sets. A bit more on the Galidor side, maybe, but it’s still ridiculously endearing, and I love it. I would love it even more if Disney actually asked Lego to make these into constraction sets, but…that’s probably not going to happen, huh? There are going to be models released of these forms, apparently. Lego would still be better. -Apparently this is an original story, where Andy and several of the toys have disappeared after Young Xehanort and the Heartless have appeared in this world. Not sure about timeline placement, but I’m super excited about this—the press release says this story was held to the same quality as an actual Pixar movie, and if that holds up, man… -Look at that Keyblade! The guard is Buzz Lightyear’s spaceship box! The blade is a cactus with a rope and a bandana and a cowboy hat! It has the Star Command emblem and the sheriff badge! And it transforms into what can only be described as King Dedede’s rocket hammer, or alternatively a giant toy drill! Look at Sora massacre stuff with that awesome and whacky weaponry! I desire it. -I can’t quite get a clear look at those new Heartless, but they look pretty cool. I’m excited to see what other new breeds might turn up. -So you might be thinking “Okay, is the part member going to be Woody or Buzz?” The answer is “Both. Both is good.” The display shows both of them, plus Sora, plus Donald and Goofy. That’s a party of five, all at once. That’s incredible. I cannot wait. -You go to a toystore and fight a bunch of mech suits. Beat them, and you get to jump inside the mech suit and use it to beat up the other mech suits. This is exactly the kind of stupid anime trash that gets me out of bed in the morning and I will love every second of it. -Young Xehanort shows up. I don’t think he’s been turned into a toy? Not really surprising, Xehanort breaks the rules of worlds all the time, plus it’d be…kind of weird to see him as a toy… -You know, back when KHIIFM came out, people dug through the files and found incomplete models for a Buzz and Woody Summon! Now it’s a full-on world, not to mention the very first Pixar world! This opens the door to an entire new group of world possibilities, and it’s the perfect one to do so! Gosh I hope they incorporate that lamp somehow, it’s only right. -Can we fight Zurg? I really, really want to fight Zurg. Thank God for this. I’ve been really stressed out lately and this makes me truly, legitimately happy. I just…I love this. I know I’m repeating myself, but I love this. So much.
  3. Square Enix has been doing a Kingdom Hearts Orchestra lately, and apparently there was a show somewhere last night. They used this opportunity to display a brand new trailer, which can be watched . I guess this technically counts as its E3 showing, sort of? Thoughts I wonder…the text at the beginning mentions “dreams” and “dive”, and then we see Sora falling in a way very reminiscent of Dive Mode from 3D. Of course, the significance of that is questionable. The music is pretty sweet, though. It sounds like the final boss music from 0.2, maybe a little different? It’s awesome. The main draw here is a ton of gameplay footage. Flowmotion, Shotlocks, team-up attacks, they all make appearances, plus footage of Sora using his Keyblade’s shield transformation and a ton of other techniques through the new form changing mechanic. I’m starting to be more optimistic about using this system in place of Deck Commands. This looks pretty cool. There are some minor nods towards story as well, but…honestly, that’s my least favorite thing here. I think this is our first look at Maleficent and Pete (and Hades) in KHIII, and apparently they’re searching for the box that the MoM left behind in Back Cover. That whole plot point was kind of “Eh” IMO. I guess it’s consistent: Maleficent mentioned the Book of Prophecies in 2.5 and is involved somehow in X/UX (we still don’t know how). Still…”Eh”. And then there’s a scene outside the Twilight Town mansion with Sora, Donald, and Goofy talking to Xemnas and Ansem. I went really quickly from “Ah, Xemnas!” to “Oh, come on, why?”, since the dialogue is Xemnas asking Sora how he plans to bring Roxas back. I’ve gone on about how I don’t want them to separate Roxas from Sora, right? About how Roxas rejoining with Sora at the end of KHII and finding peace felt like a good end to me and that ripping him out of that would only serve to undermine that resolution? I have? Okay. It’s funny, just last night I asked myself if I actually still like Kingdom Hearts, and even after seeing a brand new trailer upon waking up I still don’t have a proper answer. Hm. The end promises that at the D23 Expo next month (July 15th, specifically) there will be a new trailer with a new world, which sounds promising. Hopefully this will be the start of a more consistent stream of updates, eh?
  4. So the new multiplayer mode of the KH mobile game just...isn't that good, IMO. I messed around with it a bit when it first came out and I just haven't even considered touching it since. This week, they're adding a new avatar costume you can only get by playing said multiplayer mode These are the most beautiful costumes I've ever seen and I take back everything I just said. I am going to play multiplayer until I drop. Not sure where they came from, but I'm really, really hoping they somehow turn up in KHIII or beyond because something this gorgeous deserves a canon appearance. UPDATE: They are now mine
  5. Recently Famitsu did a survey in honor of Kingdom Hearts' 15th anniversary, asking things like favorite characters, favorite scenes, what Final Fantasy characters you want to see (Bartz placed fifth!!), etc. More recently, Nomura responded to these results, and there were two things that really stood out to me. One: he is disappointed that Riku didn't place higher in the popularity poll and wants to fix that. I wholeheartedly agree. And two: (screenshot from KHInsider) Nomura has called American fans out on their impatient, entitled attitude, and it gives me life.
  6. Pahrak Model ZX

    Roxas

I’ve typed and deleted this a few times over the past few months, I wasn’t sure if I should spend time on it and on occasion worried that it sounded too much like a Tumblr post (my gosh I hope that’s just my imagination), but you know what I’m feeling needy right now so here. Probably not well-organized and contains spoilers for lots of Kingdom Hearts games, you’ve been warned. You probably already know that Kingdom Hearts fans love Roxas. The thing is, Roxas was created from Sora and, in the same game he was introduced, had to return to Sora, and so many fans want him to become his own separate entity once again. I disagree. Quick explanation of some KH mechanics: a person is made up of a Heart, a Body, and a Soul. When the Heart is removed, it is consumed by the darkness within and becomes an instinct-driven creature known as a Heartless, while the Body and Soul are transported to a different location and reborn as a Nobody. Nobodies retain their original consciousness and memories, but possess no emotions and are consumed by a desire to find their Heart and become a complete being once again. Roxas is Sora’s Nobody, but due to a myriad of reasons (and they might add more as the series goes on), Roxas doesn’t have any memories of being Sora. None of the Nobodies can feel anything, but they can remember what it was like and fake it. Roxas? He can’t even remember who he used to be. People keep showing up and claiming they knew who he used to be, and he is pushed into returning to Sora—becoming who he used to be once again, but even then it doesn’t quite feel right. Sora’s emotions are a little more subdued, and he keeps seeing things that make him sad without knowing why. Eventually, Roxas and Sora have a duel within their shared Heart/mind/metaphysical battlefield or whatever, where Roxas demands to know why everyone valued Sora so much more than him. And he’s right. The prologue of Kingdom Hearts II is a week of Riku and DiZ pushing Roxas back towards Sora, doing whatever they can to reawaken Sora no matter the expense to Roxas. They care about Sora, but Roxas? We need him gone to get Sora back. That’s all there is to it. They care more about who he used to be, making him into that person again no matter what, than about who he is now or what effects that might have on who he is now. And Roxas? He can’t remember who he used to be. They keep saying that person was better, but how can he know for sure? And what’s so wrong about who he is now? The thing is, lately I’ve started looking at this like it’s a metaphor for depression. Square probably didn’t intend that, and maybe I’m just reading too deep, but it occurred to me and I feel like I need to get it off my chest and see what others think or something. Roxas (and Nobodies in general) can’t feel emotions like a normal person, no matter how hard they try. Roxas can’t remember what he used to be like, much less how to make himself act or feel that way again. Everyone around him just wants him to go back to being who he used to be, and ultimately, he’s forced to become that person again in a flawed, unhealthy way that causes lingering damage that still needs to be properly healed, all because DiZ had plans that he needed Sora for. Through all that, Roxas finds out that there’s at least one emotion he can feel: anger. Anger at everyone who cares more about who he used to be than who he is. Anger at Sora, for somehow being inherently more important than him. What is it that makes who he used to be so much better than who he is now? Why was he forced into being that person again? “Why did he pick you?” So the way KHII ends Roxas’s arc is really important to me. After confronting Sora, the two of them are able to understand each other and truly become one. They’re whole again—they’ve healed in a better way—and Roxas finally knows peace. The emptiness and anger and pain and inferiority are all gone. He’s seen for himself that who he was (and is again) is someone he might actually like to be, and more than that, who he was (and is again) has met him, tried to understand him, and validated him. Sora didn’t think any less of Roxas for being his Nobody, and expresses regret and not being able to meet him properly. When Roxas and Namine (Kairi’s Nobody) say that they still want to be together even now that they’ve returned to their original selves, their original selves take their desires seriously and set out to fulfill them. That’s more consideration than Roxas can remember ever being given, and now he has emotions again and can actually enjoy it. This post is probably terribly written, TL;DR I just really empathize with Roxas in KHII and love that he gets to be at peace in the end and feel like taking that away from him would undercut his arc and be really unfair to him.
  7. I won’t be getting to play it anytime soon (PS4s are expensive), but now that I’ve watched and processed 0.2 and Back Cover I wanted to gather up my reactions and speculations in one place because…of reasons?
  8. Someone has provided English subtitles for the entirety of the 0.2 section of 2.8, so I watched that. Master Aqua is even more my hero than she was five minutes ago, we don’t deserve her, she’s got to be one of the most awe-inspiring protagonists in video game history. Something else that really caught my attention, assuming the subs are at least approximately accurate there are some interesting lore implications brought up.
  9. 95% Guilt! (No, seriously, first try!) I've never seen Guilt this high, let alone on a Medal this good. At this point it's more sensible to wait for Magic Mirrors than fuse another one! Thank God I might actually be able to get some Adamant Ore now. EDIT: My gosh I just noticed Jack what are you doing. Why the sneak.
  10. Kingdom Hearts Unchained X continues. One of the recent additions was a school uniform (on a Raid Board), not exactly a costume I was looking forward to but there was a Cid on the other side so, eh, I’ll pick it up. …I actually kind of like the way it looks. But on a less tsundere note, I’ve actually leveled up quite a bit recently, because this month’s Weekend Raid Boss If There Isn’t Another Event Raid Boss is THE GUMMI HOUND I saw this on the Wiki a while back and just think it looks so cool. It’s a giant dog mecha piloted by numerous Heartless, with cannons that shoot other Heartless and, as I just discovered, ROCKET POWERED FISTS. Also it’s purple. Like, what’s not to love? Not only is fighting it easier than that 30 million HP Fortress Crab (the Hound starts at only 3 million), it also gives out way more Lux, not to mention I finally figured out when Bonus Hours are in my timezone and they just added the once a day Lux Up button. There won’t be one this weekend since the Trident Tail with the school uniform Raid Board is still going on, but man, I’m looking forward to fighting more of these. Also I’m so close to being able to equip a full set of 6 Star Medals, maybe then I can start getting more Adamantite and power up my relatively weak Keyblades. Divine Rose is awesome though, like it’s only at +18 and it already has a much higher strength than any other Keyblade I have. And it looks lovely.
  11. I was playing Unchained's latest update today and encountered a Trident Tail Omega. Level 1 so it wasn't too bad, but I am a bit puzzled. Now, Trident Tail has an interesting design, and the general color scheme of the Omega works I guess, but... Did you really need to paint flames on it...?
  12. Kingdom Hearts Unchained X is doing a bunch of special events to celebrate the new II.8 trailer and demo at E3, as well as being released all across Europe! -For starters, 25 new story quests were added! This wraps up the Olympus Coliseum story (already?) and gives you another Orichalcum, so there are now just enough Orichalcum to get all five currently-available Keyblades to their third tier! (Third-tier Olympia looks so cool, and it has 16 gauges!) -The 600 jewel Daily Deal has been enhanced, now guaranteeing five star medals! This is of course a limited time offer, and be aware that the medals you get from this won’t necessarily be…good. I got a 5 Star Tidus today. -There’s also a new VIP quest for those who buy the 3000 jewel pack, giving you medals to evolve and boost your medals, but who can afford that? -For a limited time, ALL AP costs are 1! Every single quest, no matter what it is, even Raid Bosses, only costs 1 AP! Time to grind! -Perhaps best of all, just log in over the next week and you get a free HD Aqua Medal! This 5 Star Medal depicts Master Aqua’s II.8 render, has great stats (at about half-way to Level 80 it’s already outclassed two of the Magic Medals I’ve been using), and its special deals 7 hits at x2.90…and only costs 1 special gauge!! (The only downside is that it only hits one random target, but that can easily be worked around!) Seriously, I just saw someone who got it to 6 Star Level 100, and it has 7000 strength and nearly as much defense! Master freaking Aqua, everybody! This is great and I love it and I need to go level up and evolve this Medal now bye. UPDATE: They just started up another event, this one giving you a chance to get three new Medals: KH3D Sora, KH3D Riku, and Meow Wow! Unlike the Snow White and Dwarves event, these evolve like normal medals, so the bare minimum number you'll need to Guilt them is seven of each. Which is good, because it is not at all likely you'll be seeing many Soras or Rikus. You will, however, find yourself with dozens of Meow Wows. Thank God everything's 1 AP right now...anyway, I'm told they'll be really powerful Medals, but they are Low Tier Guilt and their specials all cost a whopping 4 gauges each, so it's up to you. You might as well Guilt them if you can, though.
  13. The time has come…the Thirteenth Darkness has finally been revealed!! Well, we’re finally done with that.
  14. Well, for starters, I decided to suck it up and go to an 11 PM showing of Star Wars on Thursday. It was an excellent decision and if you have not yet seen the movie I highly recommend you do so. There’s basically nothing else I can say about it, because I’d rather have friends than spoil it. Also, it was announced that Steven Universe is going to be back on January 4th! Not just that, but it’s going to be a full-fledged Steven Bomb, and the brief descriptions we’ve been given for the episodes are sounding pretty interesting already! Oh, and then there’s this event going on in Japan right now, Jump Festa or something, and I guess Square Enix is there and released a new trailer for Kingdom Hearts II.8 and III. Wait…actually, that’s kind of a big deal!! -The II.8 part of the trailer starts with some footage from (what I assume to be) the introduction of 0.2, showing Yen Sid explaining the situation to Mickey, Riku, and Kairi and saying they must find Aqua, Ventus, and Terra. Mickey then confirms he met Aqua in the Realm of Darkness, and…that’s that part. Then they do a bit for Back Cover—basically the same as last time, it flashes a few shots of the Awakening platform with the Union emblems and the Foretellers are speaking about how there’s a traitor. And then of course there’s some shots of KH3D HD. -After that, we get a bit of KHIII gameplay footage! Seems to be set in Rapunzel’s world if I’m not mistaken, it reuses a few old scenes of Sora fighting dandelion Heartless before showing him fighting a group of the new Nobody breed we’ve been hearing about! We don’t get a close-up, but it’s still super-obvious they were under Marluxia’s command. There’s also footage with the Buzz Lightyear Blaster Attraction Flow. Also, it looks like Sora’s using something like a Shootlock, although when he dashes between the enemies its styled like how they’re presenting Flowmotion in KHIII, so…I dunno? And there appear to be new variations of those floating mage Heartless! The one looks a lot like the Yellow Opera but might have a new design on its cloak, and it seems to summon a ring with four sharp points along its edge. There’s also one that looks to have a pinkish red cloak, and it also creates rings, though its look a lot like Axel’s chakrams for some reason. Not sure if there’s a reason for this, but it’ll be interesting to see. I sure hope the rest of my weekend is this good. (Oh, and I should probably mention that Cartoon Network is airing the new Pokémon movie tomorrow if that’s something you’re interested in.)
  15. Square Enix: (2006-2013) We are working hard on several new Kingdom Hearts titles, two will have major plot developments and one will retcon the story to show things involving fan-favorite characters, everyone’s putting in a lot of effort. Fandom: But none of them are called Kingdom Hearts III! Why do you hate us you should have called the fourth game in the series Kingdom Hearts III since you called the third one Kingdom Hearts II I’m going to completely ignore everything you’re doing because you didn’t. Square Enix: (2013) We only just started development on Kingdom Hearts III, but we were able to just barely pull together an announcement trailer to give you an idea of what you can look forward to! Fandom: UGH FINALLY! *five seconds pass* JUST RELEASE IT ALREADY I mean how long can it take to create a game?????? Sqaure Enix: (2015) Yeah, there’ll be some KHIII news at the D23 Expo later this year…haha actually we already have this cool trailer to show you at E3! Sorry it’s not longer, there’s a bunch more we wanted to show but couldn’t due to time constraints. Fandom: OMG wow that’s so cool but hey wait no release date?! HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO US?! UGH YOU ALWAYS DO THIS IT’S LIKE YOU DON’T EVEN CARE ABOUT US SQUARE!! Nomura: (in an interview a few days ago) I didn’t originally intend for there to be such a wait between KHII and KHIII, I was working on other Kingdom Hearts titles that whole time, but fans just kept asking “where’s KHIII?” Interviewer: (which you’d think would imply a degree of professionalism) Yeah it’s so great that now there’s a “legitimate sequel” Wouldn’t it be great if we actually appreciated what creators did for us instead of complaining and getting angry at them for not totally conforming to our narrow demands in an abbreviated timeframe? It probably would.
  16. It’s common knowledge that Kingdom Hearts keeps using “new” characters that turn out to be new iterations of old characters, best summed up by that classic graphic explaining the series: “Everyone is Xehanort. Everyone else is Sora.” There’s even a point in the series where Xemnas (a Xehanort) taunts Sora (a Sora) about how all these other people made Sora who he is and asking if he is really his own person. Sora brushes it off, and I was wondering if maybe that line/idea could come back later, with Sora turning it around against Xehanort, and as I was wondering how that might or might not work I finally realized an important difference between the two. The core of Sora’s situation is succinctly described when he decides to leave Destiny Islands again to kick off the plot of KH3D, saying, “I am who I am because of them.” Sora takes in a little piece of everyone he meets and grows because of that—he is influenced by so many other people and would not be the Sora we know if none of those people existed. Then we have Xehanort, who from the very first game has always been focused on finding new people to possess, finding others who he can turn into new Xehanorts. His reasons for this and how these plans have expanded can only be related through recent spoilers, so I’m going to skip over that for now and try to condense the point. Sora allows himself to be changed by others. Xehanort changes others into him. And I feel like this could be an allegory telling us that we shouldn’t force our own views on other people, coercing them into being more like us. Instead, we should take in what others have to offer, let them influence us, and grow as a person because of that interaction. I’ve seen people interpret Aqua’s storyline from Birth by Sleep as having a similar message to this, so it might not be coincidental that she ends up being doing better against Xehanort than Ven and Terra: both arcs might be saying that only someone who understands the benefits of having an open, receptive heart can stop someone with an open heart that aggressively seeks its way into others. We’ll have to wait to see where Aqua’s character goes, but Sora has already accepted his connectedness and embraces it without hesitation. The scene I’m thinking of is near the end of KH3D so I don’t want to give too much away, but of the two Xehanorts who hear his declaration, one is baffled and a little frustrated, and the other seems unaffected and silently activates Final Boss Mode. The idea that these connections can be beneficial is completely lost on Xehanort, and I’m going to go ahead and predict that that is why he can never win. (You know, in the end. He’s definitely doing pretty well now.) Maybe it’s cliché and cheesy and whatever, but if a villain cannot comprehend a hero’s power, then there’s a pretty good chance that power is going to be their undoing; said power being some variant of “the power of friendship” certainly doesn’t hurt either. But, that’s a whole thing in and of itself. My point is that I never fully grasped how Sora and Xehanort were being set up as opposites, and that the often-noted similarity does have a little more depth than is immediately apparent. And I thought that was kind of cool. (Though I guess this doesn’t really account for those characters who were spawned from Sora? I mean he still encourages them to be their own person, but I don’t know?)
  17. Looking back, I'm quite amused with how Square Enix announced the title of KH3D. At that time, some of the most recent titles were "358/2 Days" and "Birth by Sleep". We had been told the meanings would be clear after we played the games, but they weren't, so interviewers ended up asking Nomura what they meant and he gave answers that still only made limited sense. So then they announce "Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance", and they decide to just cut to the chase and say "the meaning we were going for is 'the distance you fall when you fall asleep', we know it's not grammatically correct but we went with this to get the three Ds in the title" long before the game is even out. I just find that rather humorous.
  18. (Some spoilers of course) While I do hope the upcoming Kingdom Hearts announcement has to do with X and its potential localization, there are a few other possibilities I’d like to see explored in Kingdom Hearts games. Not sure how likely any of them are to be this new smartphone game, and if not, then they’re probably not going to happen because we probably would have heard something by now, but…you know. Something that a lot of people have proposed is a game with Kairi and Lea training to become proper Keyblade wielders, and it’s a great idea. Lea has a lot of experience and is fairly powerful, but the Keyblade is still new to him so he could surely use some practice; and it would be so, so nice if they gave Kairi a chance to catch up to the others so she could jump right in when KHIII starts. Having a game dedicated to these two (or even just one of them (KAIRI)) would be a much smoother transition for bringing them onto the main stage beside the other Guardians and give them a chance for some extra character development, which is never a bad thing. The Drop system in KH3D works wonderfully, though they’d probably tweak it to fit the new theme/story. Still, the technology exists. I just feel like it’d be more natural (and fun) than having them be sort of in the background for the first part of KHIII while they train, which is fairly likely. (Alternative 1: They trained during a timeskip (works but isn’t any fun); Alternative 2: You get to play as one or both during a prologue or intermission (definitely a step in the right direction, but if you ask me a game dedicated to this has more potential)) Of course, it’s no secret I’m Kairi-biased so eheheheheh. But another game I would love to see is a Birth by Sleep-esque flashback game with a trio of playable characters, starring Eraqus, Xehanort, and Yen Sid during their training days. It looks like we’ll be getting at least a glimpse into this timeframe during KHIII, but again, it would be so much more fun to have a whole game dedicated to it! Eraqus has only been in one game thus far—he really deserves more screentime and character development, especially since they basically set him up as the Square company insert to rival Yen Sid’s Disney company insert. Yen Sid has gotten a good amount of screen time, but it’d still be nice to see him develop some more, and to see how he fought before he retired. (Also I’m still not sure if Yen Sid trained with Eraqus and Xehanort or if he had a different Master, so I’d like that cleared up.) And Xehanort, well, I think a lot of people would jump at the chance to play as him. A game like this would provide a great opportunity to expand the world and give us even more insight into the old Keyblade order. The only thing I’d definitely want in the plot would be a certain quest for Xehanort: given what was said about his Keyblade in II.5, I’ve come to believe that he must have sought out that particular Keyblade, and I’d love to see a game chronicling that search. Not entirely sure where this would leave Yen Sid and Eraqus, but if this did happen I would like to be surprised by their arcs. And I guess there’s the cancelled Birth by Sleep Vol. 2, which I would love to see rise from the ashes. Of course, the chances of that happening are basically zero, huh? But come on, the implications were that it would show Mickey’s journey through the Realm of Darkness during the first game, and that he might travel with (or at least encounter) Master Aqua! Why was that cancelled?! Since Kingdom Hearts III is going to wrap up things involving Xehanort, there’s not much chance of any of this happening afterwards. But…maybe there’s not a whole lot of chance they’ll do it before then either. So I guess this is all just a bunch of fanfic ideas ahahaha…
  19. When I beat Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix a while ago, I made a big deal about Aqua’s final line: “There is always hope.” Now, one can get nitpicky and say that isn’t really the final line of the game, there’s still that thing with Sora and Riku after the credits and then you could count the Secret Movie and the Secret Episode, but for all intents and purposes let’s just treat “There is always hope” as the final line of Birth by Sleep since it’s not in a secret thing and serves more as closure to that game than revealing a thing that ties into the other games. Also it’s the last line before the credits, so it definitely counts (Marvel fans, back me up!). Anyway, that line really hit me, but after seeing some things online and looking back, I realized that that line is new. If you go watch the ending of the original Birth by Sleep, Aqua instead says “There is always a way.” A summary of the release history: Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep was released on PSP in 2010. The Final Mix version was released about a year later in Japan only, and this version was then included in the second HD collection (II.5) released on PS3 late last year, which did make it to Western shores. I can’t be sure if the change occurred in Final Mix or in II.5, and I guess really I can’t even be sure that this doesn’t only occur in the English script, but either way, at some point someone decided to change that line, and that makes it stick out to me even more. The final line of anything is a big deal, so deciding to change it, even if it’s a tiny change, can have a huge effect on its impact. Sure, the context remains the same, but even a slight difference in word choice can give a different impression of the character or sound different to the player. “There is always a way” is perfectly fine as a final line. It shows that Aqua has regained her determination and has resolved to fight on no matter how bleak things look (and they look super, super bleak), and we see her as a remarkably strong individual. So why change it? Naturally this is all my opinion and I could be biased, but I do think the line in II.5 is better. Saying there is “a way” sounds more…not exactly cold, but logic-based, I guess? “Hope” cuts right to the emotion of the situation/decision. I guess it feels like they dropped the pretenses and let it blatantly include the emotional layer that was a little more implicit previously. You could also argue it makes us feel even closer to Aqua, knowing that she feels not only determined, but hopeful as well, which is all the more impressive and does more to assure us she’ll be okay. At the risk of oversimplifying, “There is always a way” sounds more like a stock shounen protagonist thing; “There is always hope” sounds a little deeper. Not that there’s anything wrong with stock shounen protagonists, of course, but…well, you know. Or, put differently, determination seems easier to me, partly because I’ve seen it so much and partly because it can be derived from many different emotions. Hope seems a lot more difficult, and is a very specific emotion with little to no margin for error. This is almost certainly bias on my part, though—I’m probably just jumping on the keyword. But the added clarity might still be valid for giving us a more targeted look at Aqua’s character? If so, then it really was an excellent decision, given it’s been 4/5 years since our introduction to Aqua and she’s certainly going to return to a prominent role in Kingdom Hearts III. (…Right?) I always worry about the final line of anything I write, so in that way I can definitely relate to whoever took the opportunity to improve upon Aqua’s final line. And I have to say, they made a fantastic choice, and now I’m looking forward to Aqua’s future story involvement even more.
  20. (Unmarked spoilers ahead, I’ll try to keep them…light.) I read Mr. Thornberry’s blog entry and it got me thinking about Kingdom Hearts well more than usual. The representation of light and darkness in Kingdom Hearts is…mixed, I guess. If you just take a cursory glance at the series, it’s the good guys keeping light safe from villains wielding the forces of darkness, and that’s not wrong. Heck, that’s literally the mission statement of the old Keyblade order as we find out in BBS. (Granted the game implies that order has some grave flaws, which might be why it ends up destroying itself…) But the series does try to say that darkness is not inherently evil, you just need to know how to use it. In , about 19:21, Xemnas asks Sora, Riku, and Mickey why they hate darkness, and Mickey and Riku say that darkness is a natural part of the world and there’s nothing wrong with that; the problem is that people just love to abuse it. (Sora just stands there trying to look menacing with his anime key, his major is in friendship not darkness.) The first game is pretty black and white on the subject, but since then they’ve tried to take a more neutral approach, primarily through Riku’s character arc: in the first game he fell to darkness and was possessed by Ansem, and ever since he’s been trying to make up for his mistakes and come to terms with the powerful darkness inside of his heart. This really comes to a head in Kingdom Hearts 3D, where he and Sora take the exam to become Keyblade Masters. Riku is using this as a chance to evaluate himself on a more personal level—is he really fit to wield the Keyblade when his heart was so weak in the past? (Of course if he wasn’t then it wouldn’t have still been with him, in-universe mechanics work like that, but he needs a little more than that, I totally don’t blame him.) The game answers with a very clear YES by having Riku succeed in becoming a Keyblade Master (the first new Master in about a decade) while Sora, due to having no experience with darkness, nearly gets dragged into a situation even worse than the one Riku found himself in during the first game. Riku, with his mastery of darkness, is essential in saving Sora, and the villain in this game (a new form of the villain who possessed him), outright says that Riku can now trap darkness in his heart and can no longer be manipulated. (I like to think that was a huge spirit-booster to him but I digress.) Riku made some mistakes with darkness, but he learned from it, and now he’s one of the best heroes we’ve got because of how good he is with darkness. So that’s a plus. It’s not just Riku, though. The first Keyblade we see Mickey wielding is a Keyblade from the Realm of Darkness (so far the only one from that Realm we’ve seen, and he doesn’t always use it, but he still has it); the Gravity and Magnet magic players can use are said to be dark spells, and you’ve got Ventus using them even with his heart of pure light; and, again in 3D, the Dream Eaters in the Realm of Sleep are made of darkness, and while some of them are evil, there are at least as many friendly ones that join Sora and Riku as Pokémon-esque party members. (And they’re adorable.) There are plenty of instances proving that Dark is Not Evil in Kingdom Hearts…but, they’re not entirely unbiased. For one thing, we haven’t really gotten to Light is Not Good at any point. The villain, Xehanort, likes to say this, but, I mean…he’s the villain. You could maybe cite Roxas, who controls Light and works for a villainous group for a time, and maybe Eraqus, who firmly believes Light is absolute and attacks his student (and adoptive son) Terra when the latter becomes soaked in darkness, but neither of them are really evil, and are almost always portrayed sympathetically. (I know Roxas is super-popular, and I can’t bring myself to hate Eraqus since he’s a Jedi Samurai Paladin who looks like Hironobu Sakaguchi and is voiced by Luke Skywalker.) Maybe you could even mention Sora’s Heartless from Re:coded, which is behind all the chaos going on in the datascape and, while it is made of darkness (being a Heartless), it does use some light attacks in its battle with Data-Sora. But it’s Re:coded, so who cares? Plus, pretty much every villain in the series does use darkness to some extent. I mean, the very first villain is Ansem, Seeker of Darkness, and now they’re calling the new Organization the XIII Seekers of Darkness, and their plan is to unleash a flood of darkness upon the world, and the apocalypse in the origin myth was all about the birth of darkness, and then there’s Vanitas, and…yeah, there’s actually a lot. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays into Kingdom Hearts X, the (currently Japan-only) browser game set at the time of the origin myth. The world is filled with light, but people are fighting over it, and while it hasn’t gotten too bad yet, the myth tells us it’s only a matter of time. The Foretellers, leaders of the various factions fighting over the light, all have a symbol associated with darkness on their Keyblades, so it seems like they may very well be villains in disguise. This could be a case of Light is Not Good villains…but, the game also says to watch out for “seekers of darkness disguised as guardians of the light”, so the reveal might be that they’ve been going for darkness this whole time instead. We’re gonna have to wait and see, I guess. So basically, KH says and I think definitely believes and means that Light and Dark are not necessarily associated with any particular moral stances, but the archetypal associations you’d expect are still very, very much there. This might change after Kingdom Hearts III, which is supposed to be the end of Xehanort and his Seekers of Darkness, but for now our main example for stepping out of these associations is Master Riku. He does a heck of a job, though. Related: while The World Ends With You doesn’t have thematic light and darkness like Kingdom Hearts does, a certain character who is up to no good does have powerful light-based abilities. He’s not evil, but he’s an antagonist, surely. Make of it what you will.
  21. Because I woke up today and decided "you know what forget homework I'm going to write a nearly 4,000 word essay about a fictional weapon." ...It seemed like a good idea at the time. Anyway, like the title says, it's me rambling about the Keyblade and how I assume it to work, plus a few mini-theories sprinkled throughout. It does contain a lot of spoilers, and some of the jargon and situations referenced aren't fully elaborated on so it might not make complete sense if you're unfamiliar with Kingdom Hearts. (I mean it might not even make complete sense if you are familiar with it but you know what I mean.) So yeah, that's my contribution to the world for today, maybe tomorrow I'll do something that actually benefits society! Probably not.
  22. Well, I just beat Kingdom Hearts II, and since I did entries for the other pieces of II.5 I figured I’d do one for this too. This is my fifth time playing the game, so I don’t really have that many new feelings, there were just a few miscellaneous things I thought of. (Contains spoilers for II, coded, and 3D) And now I want to replay 3D. I really shouldn’t, though, with school starting, and wanting to do all the extra stuff in II and BBS, and new games coming out in the coming months, and that game from months ago I bought but haven’t finished, and that new copy of Mega Man Star Force I bought because it was $7 and I am weak, and… *sigh* Anyway, II.5 is great, I recommend it. I have a feeling it’s going to influence my next name change again…
  23. I decided to sit down and watch the Re:coded cinematics in Kingdom Hearts II.5 today. Coincidentally, I just saw a post on another site reminding us of that tiny bit of trivia regarding its origins, and it also had a link to an article which I perused. One line that stood out to me was one of the staff members being interviewed who, reflecting on the initial pitch of coded, said, "At first the plan seemed terrible, but at the same time interesting." And I'm laughing because that's really all you need to know about coded. ...Well, okay, that's a bit oversimplified. There were some neat things that got to me while I was watching, and if you have some spare time, sure, it's worth taking a look at. If you get the relevance of all the things its referencing, at least. And, really, a large amount of the dialogue is just strangely painful (and not in the wonderful way like BBS), and I feel like some of the voice acting is a bit off too. (Though I'll make special mention of Roxas, I thought he was voiced quite well.) Anyway, in the end Re:coded is...not my cup of tea, though I will be trying to go easier on it in the future. I'll probably continue to parrot that line from the interview, though.
  24. I finally cleared Birth by Sleep's Final Episode. I remembered what happened from when I played the game before, but for some reason I felt it a lot more this time. I'll admit to tearing up at the end of all three individual scenarios, but Final Episode made me actually cry multiple times throughout, and I still want to go cry about it. Part of me is kind of embarrassed to be crying over a video game, but as time goes on, I find more and more that this idea is kind of silly. Video games matter to people--they give us characters who can inspire us, and possess an interactive element lacking in other forms of media that draws us even closer to these characters. I think I'd care about Aqua even if Kingdom Hearts was a movie or book or what have you, but I also think it's a little different since I was just guiding her through an intense boss battle knowing that my choices (or mistakes) would determine the outcome. It's an interesting sort of relationship between player and character--admittedly no substitute for relationships with real people, but much less intimidating and with a clear outcome. Er, maybe I'm getting a little off-topic... What I guess I mean is that I want to stop being embarrassed about getting emotional over video games, because those emotions exist. So yeah, I cried my way through the credits of Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, and the next time I feel hopeless, I'm going to try to think about that final line. And maybe that's okay.
  25. For all the ridiculous nonsense in Kingdom Hears, it strikes me that people don't talk about Space Paranoids that much. I mean the simple fact that a game in 05/06 used Tron, from 1982, as a world is weird enough, not to mention that it's a world inside a world, but when you get there, Tron says that it is a copy of the original. Think about that for a minute. Ansem the Wise got onto ENCOM's servers (apparently in the early 80s), saw the Tron world there, and then decided to just copy-paste the entire thing into the Radiant Garden computer system. And then nobody even knew it was there, had any interaction with it, or tried to update it at all for at least eleven years, maybe more. Then Goofy, Donald Duck, and an anime kid with a giant key just show up and become Tron's best friends and ram Light Cycles into Heartless. Why don't we talk more about this?
