  1. [original sketch] | [Lineart] Long time no see! Felt like drawing something BIONICLE-related again after what must have been... months? (even if you do count the odd sketchbook scribble). And who would make for a better motive than the one and only Roodaka? =D I actually went and grabbed the old set to reference (I mean obviously, I took some artistic liberties, as always), but tried to make the design my own. She didn't turn out quite as menacing as I had originally intended, but I am nonetheless happy with the outcome. It's a digital artwork because I liked the original sketch too much to ink it. Comments and criticism are most welcome and appreciated, as always! :]
  2. Roodaka (Bionicle) by Artemiy Karpinskiy, on Flickr "Always remember this, little hordeling... though I am not a Visorak, I too can weave a web." — Roodaka to a Boggarak, Shadow Play Roodaka was a treacherous female Vortixx in Bionicle canon, who worked a double agent for both Brotherhood of Makuta and the Dark Hunters, was a key figure in one of the major story arcs, and a generally unpleasant villain to deal with. Inspired by Demitsorou's design.
  3. Roodaka Roodaka by Toa TimeLord, on Flickr Roodaka by Toa TimeLord, on Flickr "Leaders are judged in time by the quality of their enemies. History teaches us this." This is my version of the evil Queen herself in a G2 style. This version of Roodaka has custom hands, torso, and boots. The main inspiration for this build was the cap piece and the boots the rest of the MOC centers around those concepts. She is by far one of my tallest MOCs and actually has a very stable foot.
  4. A young Vortixx hailing from Xia, Roodaka has traveled far and wide across the Matoran Universe to lend a healing hand to those in need. With her extensive knowledge of medicine, she provides cures to a wide variety of ailments, from the poison of Lerahk to the venom of Visorak. Her staff generates a protective barrier to block incoming attacks, while her Rhotuka can restore anything to its original state. Her reputation is so great, the name "Roodaka" has become synonymous with "mercy". No one is sure why a Vortixx, a member of the race that deals only in business and profit, would go out of her way to act so altruistically. Rumors have circulated that she once saw a vision... a dark mirror of the person she could become. Perhaps then, Roodaka has adopted this solemn duty out of determination to never follow that path into darkness. ----- When BS01 announced their "Legends and Infamy" contest, I immediately had an idea for which villainous character would be fun to reimagine as a hero. Turned out it was quite the popular idea, since two other entries also tackled the same subject. With a villain as memorable as Roodaka, that shouldn't be too surprising. The canonical Roodaka is the archetypal seductive femme fatale, visually illustrated by her design that emphasizes certain features. With that in mind, my method of taking the character and making her heroic meant distancing her from her original sultry appearance, especially since there's a certain trope for associating heroes with modest clothing and villains with revealing outfits. Therefore, if the original set looked like she was wearing a silver bikini, then this MOC would be wearing a white dress instead. That's where I got the idea for a more angelic visual motif, since the good pure angel is about as far as you can get from the evil sexy seductress. In turn, interpreting the design of an angel in a series with a futuristic aesthetic led to some loose inspiration drawn from Mercy in Overwatch, as you might be able to tell from this MOC's name. I even sketched some quick concept art just to get my thoughts down on paper. I considered including more angelic qualities such as a halo or wings, but I thought this would risk taking it too far; still, I decided to keep the visual motif by incorporating the design of feathered wings into her staff and dress. Imagining the MOC in my head was the easy part. Actually building it was an entirely different story. Since my entire BIONICLE collection is currently boxed up in storage, I was restricted to using LEGO Digital Designer and its limited library. I put together an initial "sketch" model, just to establish the "bottom of the barrel" and see what needed improvement (basically, everything). As goofy and terrible as the "sketch" model looks, it was actually really useful for teaching me what I needed to focus on, such as anatomy. All in all, I'm very satisfied with the end result. I haven't done nearly as much BIONICLE MOCing since the end of G1, so the BS01 contest gave me a good opportunity to stretch these muscles. I think I've struck a ideal balance between building an original model from scratch and keeping it recognizably Roodaka, with several pieces (such as the gears in the staff) chosen specifically as a callback to the original set. It's far from perfect, and the other contest entries blow mine out of the water... but for me personally, this was a very successful MOC, and I'm happy with how it turned out. 5. So I found some old drawings I thought I might upload. This happens to depict the traditional method of courtship on Zakaz, which is presenting the flower of the Spiked Dagger Plant. Such a flower is difficult to obtain, but a determined Skakdi will either find a way to harvest it or die trying.
  6. Roodaka Master of Manipulation (BBC #69 Entry) Front - Back - Back without skirt/cape - Side - Side 2 - Side 3 - Above Catcher Claws - The "Rhotuka" Blaster - Both weapons Head - Torso - High heels She's cunning - She's cruel - She likes spiders - She steals masks Structure (minus 2 8-tooth gears that should be on the blue pin-axles) Shells - More shells - Gear System - Alternate Eyes Some - More - Pictures Gallery Roodaka is a master of manipulation. She is cunning, cruel, and deceptive. She prefers to use lies and tricks to defeat her foes, rather than brute strength. She is the mastermind behind many evil plots, and is always using others to carry out her plans, as she pulls the strings in the background. She craves power and wishes to become the ruler of Okoto. She has a fascination with spiders, and keeps a Skull Spider as a "pet". She carries a sharp-edged weapon called the Catcher Claws, as well as a powerful weapon she calls the "Rhotuka Blaster", which is as able to fire a strange substance that can mutate its victim. She has a strange shard she wears on her chest, which for some reason resembles a protodermis cage, which is strange, since the only known protodermis cage in the Okotoverse is where Zigben was defeated and encased... Functions: Roodaka features a gear function with friction, and her Catcher Claws work just like the original's. The Rhotuka Blaster fires studs just like any of the Protector weapons. Part count: 185 pieces. feet: 26 - legs: 28 - arms/hands: 28 head: 17 - torso: 13 - gear system: 31 Total (minus weapons): 143 pieces Catcher Claws: 21 - Rhotuka Blaster: 15 (not counting ammo) - Ammo: 6 In comparison, the original had 233 pieces and cost $20. Mask Maker Vs. Skull grinder has 171 pieces, and it costs $30. So I think I succeeded in making this a titan-sized set. Height: The model stands taller than any of the new 2015 Toa, and Tahu's head is just under the "Makuta Stone". The moment I read the hint at what the prizes would be for the 69th BBC Contest, I knew I had to enter. I wondered what I was going to build. I looked around and saw my 2015 Tahu. I built a cute little Jaller revamp with the golden mask. But it was too small, and you could have entry, so I started looking around at my parts. I found lots of black, silver, & gunmetal. And then the idea came to me. I started with the torso, because I knew I had to get that to look right. After that turned out well, I began work on the head, which also had to look right as well. The next struggle was the high-heels, which I wanted to preserve from the original model. Roodaka is actually quite stable with those shoes, and I think they turned out well. I'm not entirely satisfied with the lower back-armor, but the skirt-cape fixes that for me. I wanted to keep the original's Catcher Claws, and since they used the same gears as the new Toa's gear functions, that wasn't too hard. Lacking a Rhotuka launcher, I had to substitute one of the Protector stud launchers for it, and I think the result turned out looking pretty good. I wanted to make Roodaka sleek and slim, and the CCBS made that easy. I managed to use only a total of4 parts from the original Bionicle building system, so I think I succeeded at building this in the style of the new sets. The "alternate eyes" were actually going to be the finalized eyes, until I discovered that Angry Kitty from Emmet's Construct-o-Mech has given me 2 drills/horns I could use as eyes instead. I hope you liked my Roodaka revamp! Comments & (preferably constructive) criticism are welcome!
  7. Roodaka plodded along helplessly next to Botar’s replacement. “Why, exactly, are we still being held here? Surely you have better things to do than cart a prisoner around-“ “Be quiet, fool” Botar’s replacement scowled. “This is my duty. Now get back in line!” A Dark Hunter, pleased at the delay, launched a Rhotuka at the replacement. The flames from the spinner were enough to burn a hole in his armor. Delighted, Roodaka used the opportunity to stun Botar’s replacement with a small amount of shadow energy, then leaped after the being, landing solid blows. A quick kick crashed him into a rock, knocking him out. Spinning, Roodaka snatched the spinner launcher, aiming it at Botar’s replacement’s throat. A second later, the Order member disappeared, reappearing behind Roodaka. Lifting the former Visorak viceroy into the air, the replacement formed energy bindings around her, giving her no way to aim her new launcher or to harm her opponent. Growling, he reached out his arm to seize the launcher – just as Roodaka used her power to disrupt the bindings just enough…the spinner struck his arm, and he was no longer Botar’s replacement. Glaring down at the new Keelerak next to her, Roodaka knelt, whispering into his audio receptors. “Come along with me, you fool, and I might see fit to reverse the mutation, or you can take your chances out there. I won’t look for you.” The reply, in the language of the Visorak, was one of pure hatred. Roodaka allowed herself a smile, and as she sauntered off toward the forest, an obedient Keelerak trotted along at her side. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Vakama, Turaga of Fire, sat in a quiet place for contemplation and reflection – by the surf of the newborn ocean that had once been Aqua Magna. Propped against a small shade tree, the veteran Turaga began pondering through recent revelations…the Great Spirit, a giant robot…the Order agent’s takeover of Metru Nui and then Makuta’s efforts to control the city…the city that was the very center of power…the Great Spirit’s sacrifice and his words…Slowly, Vakama walked through years of ignorance and doubt, fitting piece after piece into the puzzle that brought him here. How could I know so much, he thought, and yet so little? Perhaps we are in yet another place that only knowledge will break us of. Ah…there is no hurry…we have plenty of time to discover our future here…Time, yes… The Mask of Time! It is in the hands of the Shadowed One. I suppose the matter should be brought before the Toa, although they have enough matters to deal with, and probably will not be able to help. Frustrated, he stalked away, slowly easing out of the emotion and facing his inability to act. It took a Makuta, a Toa, and an army of Rakishi to defeat the Shadowed One and Voporak before, and even if I was…stronger…it would not matter. “Turaga?” * * * Roodaka was in a bad mood. For someone accustomed to the mountains and factories of Xia, the high towers of captured cities, and expansive fortresses, this forested area was just a little too … unsettling. Cowering in said forest to avoid detection by her potential allies, however, was supremely frustrating. “This will do quite nicely for a fortress, don’t you think?” The Shadowed One nodded to Sentrakh. Sentrakh said nothing. He didn’t really mind this particular spot, seeing that it was on a tall hill. But the trees around this clearing would have to be removed – to many places for enemies to hide. Sentrakh wasn’t sure whether he would favor that fact or not. “That question” said the Shadowed One “is one I would like an answer to.” “Perhaps” said Sentrakh. “The trees.” “Soon, Sentrakh, we will have no enemies. They will all be frozen in time.” Sentrakh nodded cautiously. As he did so, he spotted a metallic bit of green that skittered away. Then he heard the sound of running feet behind him. He whirled, the two Dark Hunters churning off in the direction of whoever had been listening. * * * “Turaga?” “Yes?” It was a Matoran, somewhat fatigued. Standing next to him was a colossal figure, armor of white and gold, and disturbingly familiar… “Who are you?” “In the universe that I come from, they call me Makuta Teridax.” Vakama’s eyes narrowed. “What do you mean?” “He’s from an alternate universe where the Makuta banished all the darkness from inside themselves…” Mazeka related the tale that had brought them here. “I suggest you return to the universe from which you came.” Vakama said. “The Toa will not welcome you here. I will not welcome him here until he can prove that he is one with the light.” “What would you have in mind?” Vakama smiled. If this was one of Makuta Teridax’s tricks, he was going to regret it. * * * Roodaka dodged tree trunks, vaulted brush, and swung from tree to tree (humiliating!) to evade pursuit. Nearby, a Keelerak crashed through the vegetation, making a racket even a deaf Turaga could hear. Somehow it was managing to avoid the flashing eyebeams and wheels of energy that filled the forest. The only problem was that it was now flying through the air, crashing toward the water… “Incoming!” * * * Roodaka plunged into the surf. She hated water, but the prospect of getting sheared in pieces by a pair of eyebeams was not as fixable. It took a couple of seconds for her to process the voice she’d heard as she raced past the figures on the surf. “Roodaka?” Vakama’s voice. She bolted back to the surface, startled. The Shadowed One launched his eyebeams at her, only to be stunned by a blast of light to the face. He staggered, blinded, but Sentrakh launched a Rhotuka spinner at the Makuta, which he barely managed to dodge. Mazeka leaped onto the Shadowed One’s arm, trying to dislodge his staff, but the veteran Dark Hunter merely tossed him away. His vision restored, the Shadowed One launched his eyebeams to destroy the Makuta’s armor, which were defected by a Rhotuka. Irritated, the Shadowed One moved in on the Makuta, leaving Sentrakh to face to face a Turaga, Roodaka, and the Keelerak – who, due to the exposure to the water had gone crazy and was shooting off spinners in every direction at a rapid rate. Sentrakh was forced to dodge or parry the spinners with his own, that and the ones Roodaka was carefully launching, in between her own acrobatics to avoid the paralyzing spinners. Meanwhile, to evade being permanently blinded by his new adversary, the Shadowed One used his staff to form barriers around himself, repairing it as fast as Teridax could smash it, which wasn’t too slow. “The Shadowed One, indeed.” observed the Makuta. “Can’t stand the light.” He blasted the interior of the structure with light, drowning the Shadowed One in it. Furious, he blindly smashed at his structure, shooting a Rhotuka of his own at the source. “You obviously know who I am. But only a fool could have placed you together – something that does not exist with a thing that should not exist. Next time, Toa of Light, find a better disguise.” Teridax scowled, blasting what remained of the structure with chain lightening. Sparks made shallow ridges in the Shadowed One’s armor, but the Dark Hunter leader was unmoved. He launched eyebeams at his adversary, blasting through a good amount of Teridax’s leg armor. Only a last minute application of his dodge powers saved his leg from being completely lost. “Whatever you are, you’ll have to do better than that!” “I can” said Teridax. Concentrating his power, Teridax slowed down the Shadowed One’s reflexes. Quickly, the Shadowed One did the only thing he could, slapping the Mask of Time over his face in a vain attempt to ward off defeat. Speeding up time inside him, the Shadowed One regained his speed, warding off the Makuta’s attempts to slow him down. However, use of the mask required his complete concentration… * * * Sentrakh backed away from the Keelerak. Suddenly Roodaka was standing on a very narrow spire. The slightest movement would send her toppling… The Keelerak collapsed. Sentrakh sighed. He prepared a Rhotuka spinner for launch. Roodaka leaped forward off of the spire, and crashed into Sentrakh, Rhotuka flying into the air. The spinner destroyed some nearby sand, creating a pit, which Sentrakh promptly slid into, carrying Roodaka with him. At the last second, Roodaka felt a strain on her arm, but whomever it was’ grip was slipping rapidly, and only swift reflexes enabled Roodaka to add her own grip to the stranger’s before losing it entirely. Sentrakh had a grip on her neck and was pulling her down. Desperate, she flailed about with her one free arm, but the only thing was one shade tree with weakened roots. The tree came crashing down, and Roodaka saw a firestaff come down on her neck. Then she saw nothing. * * * “Roodaka!” Someone was kicking her in the side. And saying her name very loudly, right in her ear. “Ow! Which side are you on?” Roodaka said. “Oh, Vakama, I’d thought I’d never see the day.” “To answer your question-” “Not important. Not at all.” * * * Makuta Teridax, unfoiled, switched powers, forming a vaccum around his opponent. The Shadowed One launched his eyebeams again, but this time Teridax was able to evade, the bolts only singing his armor. The Shadowed One charged in, trying to catch his enemy off balance…and was hit by a spinner. The paralyzing power was only enough to momentarily stun him, but it was enough for Teridax to trying slowing again… and for Roodaka to run past, snatching the Mask of Time from his claw. Teridax teleported away. Weakened and infuriated, the Shadowed One vented his anger with a burst from his eyebeams, destroying the tree which hid his talented bodyguard. Sentrakh climbed out of the pit, brushing sand off his armor. Neither said anything for a long time. The Shadowed One simply gestured for him to come along as they began the slow walk back to camp. * * * A small application of Teridax’s power revived Mazeka. The two watched as the sunset breathed color into the sky and the combatants deserted the battlefield. As they watched, a slender female form emerged from the forest in a clearing adjacent to the battlefield, a diminutive Visorak trotting alongside. A Turaga appeared, moving in. “Allies” mused Mazeka. “No” said the Makuta. “Even enemies with a common foe will be allies, but these are not friends, nor foes. Their history is complex, one best told on a cold, dark, night…” * * * Roodaka passed the Mask of Time to Vakama. “Catch” she snarled. “I’m sure you could find a use for this” Vakama said. “Are you sure?” “I don’t want any baggage.” Roodaka waved her hand. “And that’s just the thing, Vakama. I can always count on you.” They walked in silence for a bit. “You don’t have to be weak anymore, Turaga.” Roodaka gestured to her spinner launcher. “I am not weak. I am as I should be, and I still have my duty.” “Of course, Vakama. You have the Mask of Time. Nothing is impossible now.”

  9. "Call this a fortress? I've seen sand castles that could be broken into less efficiently than this."The seductive quip slithered through the air like a Doom Viper, ensnaring the ears of those who still had the brain activity necessary to hear it: the number of people who fit into this category could be counted rather easily on one hand. More specifically, two fingers: in a matter of thirty seconds, Lariska had utterly obliterated the life forces of the dozen or so "highly trained" Brotherhood "operatives" that stood guard over the armory."Uh, boss," one of the grunts (which, really, was the most adept word that could be given to these lower-level pigs; recruiting standards for the Dark Hunters had fallen substantially since the murders of Nidhiki and Krekka) said. "Your boss said that we should avoid any un...unnece..unnisisiri..."Lariska snorted derisively in laughter: to her chagrin, Thing 1 and Thing 2 laughed with her, though the confused looks on their faces betrayed the fact that they didn't know why they were laughing."Unnecessary deaths," finished the erudite Dark Hunter. "The boss wanted us to avoid any unnecessary deaths. Add that term to your lexicon, big guy. It might come in handy some day."The Dark Hunter would have scratched his head if he weren't carrying a double-barrel shotgun. That was something Lariska couldn't deny, as much as she wanted to; these two muscle-bound Toa of Iron were no doubt going to come in handy. Their target was ruthless, yet sneaky, educated to be nothing more than a shadow amongst shadows, unable to be seen unless you weren't looking for her. In short, she was the worst kind of opponent, and for that, they'd need the big guns. Unfortunately, the only people qualified enough to carry the biggest guns were the biggest morons."Is a lexicon like a new type of gun or something?" asked Thing 2, his dull drone boring into Lariska's brain like a hammer. Not for the first time, she contemplated killing these two invalids, but no. Better to let the mark do that for her; it meant less paperwork, and red tape was the last thing she wanted to cut through after a job like this. Ever since the Brotherhood had so stupidly seduced the Dark Hunters into a war they both knew would inevitably end in a stalemate, there had been enough red tape to deal with."Just...just forget it," she growled through gritted teeth; the primal look, when combined with the taut and seductive posture her body gave off when tensed and full of adrenaline and bloodlust, gave her a Kavinika-like demeanor. The silent threat that the dark and dangerous bounty hunter gave off was lost on Thing 1 and Thing 2. "Let's just reload in here and then move. Her room is on the third floor, and sunset's in twenty minutes. I want her dead by the time the moon ascends.""Hey, boss! When this is over with, can we go buy a couple lexicons and start shooting people with them?" said poor, excitable Thing 2 with a stupid grin on his doughy face. The childlike glee did nothing to improve his looks: if anything, the tidal waves of fat and muscle that pushed east and west over the lines of his face as he smiled only helped to make him look more pig-like. "I'm sure the boss won't mind!"Lariska couldn't help but give a dry sob and pluck a pistol from the wall. ***** "Have you come to make an example of me?"Lariska laughed as the target sat up a bit straighter, began to feel the air around her and stretch, began to search for a weapon to use. The Dark Hunter was not fooled: this woman was prepared, much moreso than she was willing to let on, and she was dangerous. Dangerous enough to make Lariska think that three Dark Hunters might not have been enough..."Hello, Roodaka," she said, betraying none of her own private insecurities about this mission. "It's been a rather long while, hasn't it? I seem to recall you turning one of your best instructors into a glorified Fikou.""Obviously, this can only mean you need better instructors," said the Vortixx, spinning around in her chair and trying not to smirk at the two bags of flesh flanking Lariska. "And better enforcers. I mean...really, Lariska? Tweedledee and Tweedledum couldn't capture a fly with a force field."Thing 1's face contorted in confused fury: the look was not a flattering one, even to his partner, who looked at him with slanted eyes and a slack jaw."I think she just called us dumb!" Thing 1 yelled indignantly, charging forward. Roodaka smirked and stood up to meet him. She was surprisingly tall, almost meeting the Dark Hunter's eyes; her smirk and his roar, however, were a fleeting, momentary study in contrasts. The emphasis rested on the word fleeting, as Roodaka brought her fist up immediately into Thing 1's jaw and smiled innocently as a hidden blade underneath her sleeve jutted through Thing 1's head. His brain was cut in half, the skull completely decimated by the velocity of the blade shooting forward: death came for the brute in two seconds flat. Lariska raised an eyebrow, impressed against her will; Thing 2 tried to mimic the action, but only succeeded in sending a roll of fat shooting across his forehead like an Airship through a chute. He drew his gun, ready to fire a bullet into her, but Roodaka whipped the dagger out of her sleeve and threw it with Sanok-like precision, sending it zooming right into the Dark Hunter's aorta. Thing 2 stumbled back in shock, touching at the dagger with widened eyes."I...I should have brought a lexicon," he managed to grunt, before his life's blood bubbled up in his throat and began to cut off the air flow. Lariska watched as Thing 2 dropped to the ground in the same manner as his partner, and then looked up to Roodaka, giving the Vortixx the courtesy of a slow clap."Very good," she drawled, as the two began to circle each other like alpha males fighting over domination of their pack. "I was half-ready to just slit their throats myself and be done with it; you just saved me six hours of free time.""Where you're going, assassin," Roodaka spat, "you'll have all the free time you'll ever need." ***** The two circled each other for several minutes, their eyes never even showing an iota of anything less than pure, undiluted hatred for the woman daring to try and stand in her way. Roodaka finally broke the silence with a laugh. If Lariska was surprised, she didn't show it; the inky black void of her eyes only seemed to darken and stretch, ready to suck Roodaka into it and send her into an abyss populated by only the very worst of nightmares, where any positive emotion, any flicker of the treachery that Roodaka was so renowned for, would be pounced on and ripped to shreds, along with its owner. To Lariska, that sounded like an objective enough deal. "I must admit, I did not expect the Dark Hunters to be bold enough to waltz right in unannounced. This was supposed to be one of the Brotherhood's most secure fortresses: had I known that three Dark Hunters would have been able to breach it, I might haven ever defected to begin with." Lariska gave a harsh laugh: the sound was like the death screech of a Rahi, the screams of a witness to a murder, the frantic sobs of a Matoran pleading for his life, unable to enunciate clearly with a gun barrel between his teeth. It was horrifying. It was chilling. It was everything. It was nothing. "That was always your problem, Xian," she drawled, clearly at ease with the situation; she spun the handle of one dagger around her fingers in a relaxed manner, though Roodaka was not fooled by this act at all. "You always flipped sides too soon. At the slightest provocation, the slightest twitch of action against your side, and you would flip like a gymnast towards anyone who paid well, anyone who promised your miserable hide another millisecond of safety. You don't even deserve the title of traitor. At least traitors have a cause. And you, Roodaka? What do you believe in?" Roodaka seemed to be at a loss for words at this: her eyebrows furrowed and met, and her lips pursed fervently. She didn't make a sound. "Exactly. You don't believe in anything. You're nothing. And I'm about to prove it to you." Without any semblance of warning, Lariska pounced, swinging the butt of her dagger at Roodaka's temple. The Xian twitched upward, and Lariska had a split second's worth of realization as a blade not unlike the one that had killed Thing 1 jutted from her other sleeve and swung towards her. The Dark Hunter tilted backwards in midair and watched as the blade hovered precariously over her face for what seemed like an eon in the guise of seconds: when Lariska's feet touched ground, time seemed to recover from the temporary shock of the two femme fatales going at it and decided to watch the proceedings unfold as they may. Roodaka swung a vicious elbow at Lariska, and as the Dark Hunter moved to catch it - as Roodaka predicted she would - the Vortixx swung her fist up into Lariska's face, slamming her knuckles into the center of Lariska's face. She fell back a step in shock, clutching at her face, and Roodaka took the opportunity to kick a blade out from her shoe and dig it into Lariska's ankle. The two went down swinging, both throwing punches and kicks and chops at each other: Lariska soon managed to slam a wicked cross into Roodaka's jaw, sending her flying back, and the injured Dark Hunter stood up and threw a dagger, cutting into Roodaka's shoulder and spilling her blood across the floor with a cry. Lariska smirked and moved for the dagger, but once again, Roodaka was ready. The traitorous Xian kicked out the blade from her shoe again and kicked Lariska in the cheek, cutting through flesh and scraping the bloody iron against Lariska's tongue. She cried out in pain, and Roodaka took the opportunity to move in on Lariska from behind and tear away her mechanical arm with a vicious pull. The Vortixx and her prize both tumbled to the ground in unison as Lariska cried out in agony and fell to her knees, clutching the newly-created stump that was connected to her shoulder. Roodaka walked up to Lariska and tilted her head up with one curved finger."Well, then," she cooed. "Looks like you'll be needing another one of those fancy little arms, Lariska.""And you another one of those fancy little heads," spat the Dark Hunter, sliding her own miniaturized pistol from her sleeve into her hand and swinging it into Roodaka's face. The Vortixx stumbled back for a second or two, which was all the time that Lariska needed to put two bullets in her opponent's chest. To her credit, Roodaka didn't drop - not right away, at least - preferring to stand tall with as much pride as she could feasibly muster."You...you've ended me..." she rasped, blood bubbling in her own throat as it had Thing 2's. "You wench..."Lariska merely smiled and pushed the gun to Roodaka's forehead."How about it, Roodaka? How about one last flip?"Roodaka opened her mouth, and Lariska jerked the gun downwards, firing a bullet through her throat: the momentum propelled Roodaka backwards in the air, causing her to land face first in a pool of her own blood, a large hole in the back of her head. Lariska looked down at the mechanical arm laying at her feet, then the pistol, then Roodaka."As gymnastics goes," she drawled, plucking the arm from the ground and walking towards the still-open door of the fortress, "not bad." ***** Disclaimer: Though the characters of Lariska and Roodaka belong to Lego and Bionicle, the idea for this little showdown came from my fellow genius/bestedest friend Aderia. 10. Dark Vanity Aderia ₪҉₪ “And you call yourself a Dark Hunter,” The Vortixx scoffed down at the unmoving opponent at her feet. The fallen figure was just one of many operatives that her old friend, The Shadowed One, had sent after her in the past few months. Even though she was no longer the Viceroy of the Visorak, Roodaka had never stopped being queen. Upon her return to Xia, they’d crowned her and celebrated in her honor. She was Xia. The skyline, stabbing into the sky as if to dethrone the twin suns was her crown. The overwhelming aroma of success and production thrumming through the streets was her celebration. The drumming in the factories and chorus of screeching assembly machines sang for her. The two celestial torches were just beginning to rim on the far horizon. With a dismissive flick of her armored boot, Roodaka rolled the face of being into the dirt. “Pathetic. I hope you enjoy your trip back to Karzahni.” She turned and walked away, hefting her Catcher Claw deftly. Maintenance crews would find the body and dispose of it along with the day’s scrap metals in the incinerators. Her hollow metal footfalls on the roof of the skyscraper clacked rhythmically, slipping in harmoniously with all that was Xia. It was her trained ear that caught the discrepancy in the tune of Xian life, the hushing scrape of armor on rooftop and the telltale singing of a blade being drawn. Not a moment too soon, Roodaka tucked into a roll and came up facing her adversary, who was now miraculously all better. “I have to admit,” she spoke evenly, but her blood pounded in her ears. It had been a very close call. “The Shadowed One has been sending more and more intelligent agents. Whom do I have the pleasure of meeting?” But she already knew. Roodaka always knew. “It doesn’t matter,” the being said. Her voice was like slippery leather. “Of course it doesn’t. I already know,” the Vortixx smiled, rising slowly to her feet, coiled tight as a viper. She slowly began edging out of the glare of the suns, careful to keep her opponent’s eyes locked on her own; eyes as cold and hard as black diamonds. “Flimsy armor, green like muddy leaves and blue like rotten bula berries. Stringy, like a piece of tendon stretched out too far. Frail like an old mother Ash Bear and a rusty robotic arm not fit for a dumpster. You must be Lariska.” Surrounded by even taller skyscrapers, nobody but Roodaka was around to see the shocking agility displayed by Lariska as she leapt into the air without a word or telltale sign.“Agile. You forgot ‘agile,” she called. By the time the Hunter had closed the distance between herself and Roodaka, the Vortixx had her clawed baton at the ready. With a testy swing, Roodaka aimed the club-like Catcher Claw end of her weighted baton at Lariska’s temple. Instead of ducking under and sweeping out in a kick like Roodaka had guessed, the Hunter raised a forearm to meet the blow, taking a step inwards and throwing an elbow at Roodaka’s windpipe. Gutsy, but not gutsy enough. Taking advantage of the close quarters, the Vortixx aimed a shadow-laced punch straight to Lariska’s face as the Hunter’s forearm got tangled in the claw. Roodaka’s fist slowed just short of Lariska’s face plates and burst open with a startling whoosh, releasing a burst of Shadow into the Hunter’s face. Lariska staggered backwards with a cry, her free hand clawing at her face. “Burns like acid, blinds you like a bat, and calls forwards your worst fears and most dreaded memories,” Roodaka chuckled. She knew the effects of non-elemental Shadow first hand. The Vortixx stepped with the Huntress, not willing to release her Claw. With practiced, dancing steps, she’d twisted Lariska’s arm taut behind her back, earning herself a cry of pain. “Welcome to the dark side of sanity, Lariska.” Without warning, the Dark Hunter dropped to the floor, and with iron grips on both ends of her Claw, Roodaka had no choice but to be pulled down with her. Lariska heaved her shoulders, rolling Roodaka over her to land with a cursing clatter on the rooftop. The Vortixx had no choice but to release Lariska’s arm from the snaring end of her weapon, but not without a painful twist of her own arm, bringing the Hunter down with her. The two femme fatales sprang to their feet at once, eyeing one another warily. Slowly, Roodaka moved her hand to her Rhotuka Launcher. “I wouldn’t,” was all Lariska said, and Roodaka only glimpsed a flash of movement before she felt a burning fire explode in her shoulder. With a cry, she chanced a look to see a throwing knife wedged between her shoulder and chest armor, deadening her launcher arm. But looking down was her mistake, because when she looked back up, she was met with Lariska’s roundhouse. The lithe Huntress packed a decent kick, and Roodaka found herself lying on the roof again, this time with a long, lethal looking knife pointed between her eyes.“Don’t try any-“ Lariska’s words were cut off with a yell of surprise and anger as Roodaka scissor-ed her legs at a painful angle and spun to a crouching position, one knee on Lariska’s throat, the other pinning her non-mechanical arm. Lariska’s mechanical arm was pinned against the knee-height wall that ran along the entire edge of the sky-scraper roof. The Vortixx wrenched the throwing knife from her shoulder joint, pushing away the searing agony and letting the blood drip into Lariska’s eyes as she held the weapon above the Huntress. "Not going to try anything, are you now?” she asked, her words jagged and her breath tattered, unable to keep the flood of pain from her shoulder out. She plucked the long knife from Lariska’s mechanical hand. Roodaka felt blood seep through her armor, spreading from her shoulder wound. With a wicked smile, she pushed the long knife slowly into the small gap between Lariska’s own shoulder and torso armor. The Huntress’s piercing screech drowned out all else. Once the Xian smog had absorbed and spirited away the cry of pure agony, Roodaka twisted the knife, shrieking with the new scream of torture, “I repay in kind.” “You… can’t defeat me. Not with my own blades,” Lariska snarled. Impressively, her voice was devoid of any suffering. She was looking to say more, but the words escaped as another scream as Roodaka pulled the knife out. The scream choked to an undignified gurgling as Roodaka cut off the Dark Hunter’s air supply with the knee on the windpipe. “Who said anything about simply defeating you? I mean to send you back to the Shadowed One in a body bag.” A spasm jolted through Roodaka’s entire frame suddenly, rocking her back on her feet, releasing Lariska. Every nerve ending was tingling with electricity and fire. It hurt. “Poison,” The Hunter coughed, rolling to her feet and trying to staunch her own blood that was streaming down her side. “Fun, isn’t it?” Roodaka crouched breathless in the shadow of the sky-scraper barrier, her vision turning white with the next flash of poison. But this time, she pushed it down. She detached herself. Through the fire and blood and agony, Roodaka stood. I am a queen. I am a queen! I will not be brought low by this weakling. “You are a fool,” Her voice was shaky, but she continued regardless. “I’ve commanded legions of Visorak, the stealers of life. Poison is their best friend. Toxin runs in my veins and venom to me is like water to you. Just like I can’t defeat you with your own blade, you can’t bring me low with what I know best.” And almost on cue, Roodaka watched as the same poison in her body now wracked Lariska’s frame. Using the Hunter’s own words, the Vortixx purred, “Poison, my dear. Fun, isn’t it?” Even as her vision whited out once more, and the burning in her veins flooded through, she stayed standing. It was time to end this. Roodaka was losing too much blood. With the next flash of white and pain, the white was hesitant to fade from her sight, making her dizzy. Tossing her Rhotuka launcher to her functioning hand, the Vortixx began charging it, watching Lariska fall down onto the barrier that ran along the edge of the roof. The Huntress was twitching and trying her best not to cry out. Obviously, she hadn’t bothered trying to build up immunity to her own poisons. Now she was paying for it, rendered helpless. Roodaka trained her launcher on Lariska’s erratic heartlight. Nobody would recognize her, but that would be their own problem. “It’s been a pleasure,” she whispered, and pulled the trigger. In a blinding flash of dark lights, like more Shadow energy, the Dark Hunter tumbled over the edge of the sky scraper, already beginning to mutate past recognition. It wasn’t until Roodaka heard the sickening thud on the pavement far, far below that she collapsed. The Vortixx pulled a knife, long and thin like the last, from her abdomen. The blade had rotten yellow residue on it. Another poison. The Dark Huntress had gone down fighting. Mustering only just enough energy to send a flare of Shadow energy into the Xian sky, an advocate for her dire need of help, Roodaka drifted off into a fitful and agonizing oblivion, murmuring to the Shadowed One “Well played, my friend.” ₪҉₪ A/N: Aha, well there you have it, my version of Lariska Vs. Roodaka. This can be considered a variant on fellow genius, author, and a great friend, Tyler’s story, Femme Fatality which I highly recommend.I hope you enjoyed, and as always, written for you.
  11. On the island of Odina, a grand fortress once stood. It had been terrifying not only in size and complexity, but also in reputation and legend. But now, in its place a solitary figure stood instead. She could not help but observe the debris and wreckage with a smug air of superiority. In her clawed hand, she held a single stone tablet. It was titled "Black Diamonds": Some beings foolishly carry around the superstition that finding a black diamond is bad luck. I have means to prove why that belief holds true for everyone but me. You see, I am fortunate to have my own assembly of these 'black diamonds' at my disposal. And while they wreak havoc and ill fortune on others, never have they brought me sour luck, quite the contrary, in fact. Let me clarify. To be as cold as the Knowledge Tower crystals, and to be as dark as Karzahni's heart, to be as callous and unfeeling as a stone, yet brilliant and accurate like lightning; all of these can be attributed to a black diamond. Yet, at the same time, that description matches my Dark Hunters. Each agent on the roster, with his or her own history, found in the rough and brought to me by a twist of fate. Some came here as nothing more than clods of dirt, and others dull and lifeless. Training and lifestyle here doubtlessly cut and polished my Hunters individually, working them to perfection. Missions and operations carried out under my name can be fulfilled with me trusting that I'm being represented respectably. Agents can be showcased under my authority, making it known that the Dark Hunters are not a force to be overlooked. Perhaps the best thing about black diamonds is that they are nature's immortals, taking forever to form and an even longer forever to fade. Even though we are all mortal, our legacy is not. -The Shadowed One The figure dropped the tablet to the ground, watching silently as it shattered. She had a long, complicated history in which the Dark Hunters were entwined. It was almost revenge served sweet and cold, standing here in the remains of her enemy's stronghold. She only wished its fall had been by her doing. Although the one to whom she was speaking had no way of hearing her words, Roodaka spoke them regardless, as she crushed the shards of tablet beneath her heel."You fool. I thought everyone knew that black diamonds are nothing but coal."

However, I have elected to post the full story here, and avoid a bunch of archive hunting. Archived Chapters: Prologue The Turaga As the night embraced the Matoran/Agori encampment, the six veteran Turaga sat in counsel, the flickering flames playing across the sandy ground. For many of the hardened warriors of Metru Nui, the flames transported them back to a time when darkness came from within as well as without, when they had been forced to do what every prideful hero dreads - ask for help. "To begin" said Turaga Vakama. "We must accept our ignorance. The Matoran of Metru Nui are asking for our guidance. But I am afraid, brothers and sisters that we have little to give." None of the Turaga spoke up to object to that. Finally, Turaga Whenua spoke up. “Vakama is right. We must learn from the past. Ignorance is our past-” “…and will be our future, if we do not act” Nuju finished. Whenua smiled and clapped his fellow Turaga on the back. “Anyway” said Onewa, glaring at the Onu- and Ko-Metru Turaga, “We agree that ignorance is a problem, so why are we sitting here talking about it? Let us explore this new world, talk to its inhabitants, learn!” “Onewa, that task is too great for us alone” Nokama said. “We are but Turaga, and this world is a great one.” Matau broke in. “Perhaps we should quick-ask the Matoran to task-help.” “Brother, we cannot risk harm to the Matoran. This world is full of dangers!” Nokama shuddered. “This is a job for Toa. Not for a group of powerless Turaga who must debate every point.” All the Turaga looked at Nokama. Then they looked at Vakama. “I know” he said “That we are not powerless, Nokama.” Slowly, he pulled out the Mask of Time from his pack and set it on the ground in between him and the fire. The six Turaga gasped. “I thought you said it was stolen” Turaga Onewa said. “Even we have allies” Vakama whispered fiercely. “It has been recovered.” “Who?” Nuju wondered aloud. “Who would align with a bunch of old fools?” “Us” said a voice from the shadows. “After all, most of us have little amusement these days, and taking on the Shadowed One and a few paltry threats from this new world would be…entertaining enough to preserve sanity.” Flame danced across her form as she advanced toward the fire, her eyes glowing in refraction, her body shrouded in shadow. “Vakama!” Nokama gasped. “What have you done?” Chapter 1 Roodaka Behind Roodaka, Makuta Teridax towered over a Keelerak and Mazeka. “Great” muttered Nuju, “All we need is an enormous Rahi…” A hissing sound came from the Turaga’s seat, and he…disappeared into the dark. Whenua’s Ruru revealed a giant Rahi worm curled around Nuju, its gaping maw closed around the Turaga’s throat. Before anyone else could react, Roodaka snapped her fingers. The Keelerak launched a spinner, paralyzing the creature, which flew away from Nuju, his mask faintly glowing as a Lorahk was consumed in flame. “Bad joke, horde-queen” growled Nuju. “Vakama, I hope age has not blinded you to her talents.” “It was not her doing, Turaga.” The voice of Makuta Teridax made even Vakama shiver, given what they were discussing. Onewa said “That’s right.” Matau looked around. “Why is the old Makuta-familiar wearing light armor?” “Vakama must have an explanation for all this” Nokama said. “Well” said Turaga Vakama, “I suppose I have a story to tell…” * * * “Not Roodaka” said Nuju. “I will not trust her near any of our villagers.” “Much as I think the Turaga of Ice has been disturbed by his unusual experience, I am inclined to agree” Nokama looked at the Turaga of Fire, wondering what might lurk beyond his eyes. But Vakama remained impassive as the other Turaga nodded their agreement to Nuju. “Very well” he said. The words carried no emotion, but all the Turaga saw what Vakama felt, a mixture of relief and sorrow and disappointment and delight. Roodaka turned and walked off into the shadows. Nuju glared. “Watch your backs. I’m sure we haven’t seen the end of her yet.” * * * Old memories run deep, thought Roodaka. Young scars last the longest and cause the most pain. She almost smiled at the thought of outsmarting her enemy, of knowing more than they did. Did they really think I was trying to get them to accept me, and then betray them? For what? There are many ways of defeating my enemy…but information is essential to that end. Wandering aimlessly through the camp, dodging the light of various beings’ fires, Roodaka wondered whether she could still call Vakama an enemy. Not exactly. That is the least of my problems. The thought of spending the rest of her existence as a wandering nomad with only a former jailer for company severely annoyed Roodaka, and the thought of aligning herself with the Toa and Matoran was next to impossible. She could return to her own people, but they were a species accustomed to hard work in factories in an area rich with resources to support them, not an unknown planet where any factories would have to be built and resources found, a process Roodaka found boring and tedious. The Visorak here might not remember their queen’s treachery, but they would have to be tracked down and trained to obey, which was too slow – by then, the Matoran and Agori would have spread across the landscape, leaving Roodaka no land base. The Spherus Magnans, however, might prove willing and useful subjects, if Roodaka could convince them to obey her. Toward the western side of camp, three beings sat around a fire, shielded from the incoming night wind by a large piece of prototype robot leg armor. Roodaka approached slowly, staying well out of view. The smallest of the three beings nodded. “The excellent location will allow all the villagers to travel an equal distance from their homelands, so that there will be no dispute.” “And” said the being on the right, “The Fire Matoran and Agori will be able to settle near this ridge. I’m able to vouch for some of the those Matoran’s skill in weaponry and defense.” The tall being on the left sighed. “We are all in agreement on the site for New Atero. But those two passes will have to be guarded, and scouts placed on that ridge.” “What exactly are we defending against, Ackar? All the threats against us have been defeated, and we’ve been out here, in the open, vulnerable for weeks. They fear us.” “No, Raanu. They are simply biding their time, plotting their next move.” Raanu threw up his hands. “Whatever you think is best, Ackar. But I think you are imagining shadows and swords where there are none to be found, having lived under the eyes of your enemies for centuries.” “Perhaps” said the third being. “But better to fear imagined swords than to be crushed by real ones.” He had the marks of having lived in Roodaka’s universe, and something about him seemed vaguely familiar. It was at his point the conversation seemed to falter between the three beings, and the two Spherus Magnans left, presumably to get rest, and seeing that there was nothing more to be heard, Roodaka left. She found a place outside the camp, unable to forget the expression on the Toa of Fire’s face - furious, burdened, and very much alone. * * * The light of the flames of Solis Magna slowly crawled across the encampment, slipping across a certain Agori’s eyes. A few minutes later, he was making his way across the encampment. He walked past a curved piece of prototype leg armor, then redoubled back, looking down at the map Toa Tahu had spread out before him. The Toa of Fire looked up. “The site for New Atero is here.” He quickly explained the map to the Agori, who quickly darted away, toward the far side of camp, zigzagging as he went. More Agori and Matoran joined him, threading their way into the area where Thronatus were parked. Several Agori leaped onto a vehicle, and the one who started it all drove the party away. * * * Roodaka stood on a small hill, observing what went on below. Hands on hips, armored feet on two boulders someone – Mata Nui, in Roodaka’s opinion – had jammed into the sandy mound, the former Visorak viceroy never saw the dark figure behind her until she felt the sting of the sword in her back. Fortunately, Roodaka was able to roll with the force of the blow, snapping the long sword in half. The wound was poorly delivered, but it had severed some armor and tore through some of the muscle in her back, making it difficult to stand. The Keelerak, approaching from behind, launched a spinner at the newcomer. He slumped over, paralyzed. Roodaka sauntered over and lifted him up and smashed his head up against the rock, grimacing in pain from her wound. Laying him out flat on the rocky hill, Roodaka knelt to examine him. Mutating things requires a certain amount of knowledge. True, Roodaka could just launch a spinner at a form and will it to become another, but the more dissimilar the form, and the less Roodaka knew, the more energy it would require. Attempting too complex a transformation could be fatal. Fortunately, due to her training with the Dark Hunters, who had more than their share of dead enemies, acquiring a good deal of knowledge on Matoran Universe inhabitants was simple. This being had all the marks of a Spherus Magnan, and Roodaka had thought to get a basic idea of his anatomy before releasing him. Organic Tissue, Roodaka thought. This being is completely organic. They just embedded the armor in his tissue to protect him… The Keelerak chirped in the language of the Visorak. Five Skrall warriors surrounded the ridge. Roodaka scowled. The Keelerak fired two acid spinners, disarming two Skrall, who ran away. Roodaka leveled her spinner launcher at the remaining Skrall, firing toward the lead Skrall, who dodged easily. Outnumbered, Roodaka retreated off the ridge. However, she kept her spinner launcher leveled, watching as the leader approached the ridge, the other two climbing over the rocky sides. Once they were inside the ridge, Roodaka gestured to the Keelerak. Six more spinners and sixteen minutes later, the job was done, the details of which would make the Shadowed One smile. Suffice it to say that there was one very dead Skrall and later, three very confused Agori. What Roodaka didn’t know was that she had made a very serious mistake. * * * Cautiously, and with a deal of pain, Roodaka mounted the mysterious machine. It wasn’t overly complex, but it took her a few minutes to get used to the controls. Intensely aware of her surroundings, the Vortixx eased the contraption through the encampment, increasing speed as she left it, flying over the sand to new realms to explore and conquer… The air in front of her shimmered, and Roodaka, unable to see ahead, wrenched the transport to a dead stop, trying to clear her vision. The golden armor of Makuta Teridax appeared in front of her, emerging from his teleport right in front of the astonished Vortixx. “All right” scowled Roodaka “You drive.” Chapter 2 Mazeka Mazeka was miserable. Obviously, being a Ko-Matoran, standing in front of a fire wasn’t exactly comfortable, but he had willingly had endured worse things during his Orader of Mata Nui training. The bigger problem was that his mind was full of questions and no answers which had always annoyed him. Roodaka had been sent away. If Vakama’s history was complex, these other Turaga’s relation to her was simple – she was an enemy, and they wanted nothing to do with her. He had seen the same look of contempt on agents sent to interrogate prisoners. Whatever complex history Vakama had, it raised Mazeka’s suspicions. He knew from experience how deadly a traitor could be. He needed to discuss this with Teridax. Unfortunately, private discussion wasn’t a luxury he could afford, due to the Turaga in front of him and their discussing a plan, which he would soon be involved in. Nokama was advocating a settlement not far from the original camp at an estuary, which the other Turaga reluctantly approved. Matau still wanted to explore the Great Forest with a contingent of Le-Matoran. After some debate, it was decided that they should go, but take a number of Gukko Birds and scouts, and to seek out some Glatorian to go along. The other Turaga sought to explore the mountainous lands to the North. By now Mazeka was lost in his own thoughts, but the end result seemed reasonable. At least, that was what the Matoran remembered before he lay back on the sand to sleep… * * * When Mazeka awoke, he experienced that terrible where-am-I feeling you usually experience after reentering life at a different place then you left it. Fortunately, the feeling was transient enough – he was in a tent on Spherus Magna – and he stood, ever watchful and wary. “Good Morning” Mazeka’s fellow traveler looked up from his meditative pose. The tent was small, certainly not large enough for the armored colossus to stand, so he was forced to ease himself – backwards – out of the tent. If it had been any other person, Mazeka would have winced in sympathy for the person’s sheer humiliation. Well, he did wince, but he didn’t say anything about it, seeing as the veteran Makuta didn’t say anything about it. “Vakama” said Mazeka. “Yes?” “I think he could be a traitor.” “He was a traitor” said Makuta Teridax. “Long ago. But his heart lies with the Matoran, not with Roodaka.” “Yes.” said a voice from nearby. “I did betray my team - once – in times before. It is twice as painful for the betrayer as the betrayed, when you finally know what you have done…” He broke off, overcome by sadness. Mazeka put a hand on his shoulder. “You came back. You overcame the madness which I saw overcome another.” Vakama nodded bitterly. “If it is within my power to do so, you will not see it again. But I see that your eyes burn with curiosity, Matoran. Perhaps, when these immediate matters are settled, I will call Kopeke the Chronicler, and you can read the Tales of the Toa Metru. For I have walked the painful roads of memory once, and would not like to do so again.” “I understand.” * * * “I suppose we will speak with Toa Tahu and see what he can be done about getting us some transport to the North.” “Coward” said Mazeka. “Why don’t you talk to those Agori? I’m sure I could broker a deal.” “Mazeka, don’t” said Makuta Teridax. “There is…no need.” And the next thing the Matoran knew, he was standing on top of a machine of some sort, of the kind none of his kind had never seen. And Makuta Teridax was taking the controls from a certain renegade Vortixx. He spun it around, taking it back to the storage area. “So” Mazeka looked at the nearby Agori. “Mind if we take this for a spin?” The Agori looked around, confused. “You see, she was trying to steal this…and we brought it back…and if you let us use this we’ll take her away so she will never bother you again.” “Okay” said all the Agori. “Are you sure?” Makuta Teridax said. “Oh, no, it’s not a problem” The Agori looked at each other nervously. “Excellent” Makuta Teridax replied. * * * After they were a safe distance out of camp, Mazeka and Makuta Teridax clanked fists. Even Roodaka turned at the sound, and they could catch a flicker of a smile. * * * Miles passed as the Thornatus shot across the desert. There wasn’t much conversation, mostly because the occupants, whether feeling sorry for themselves, being overcome by the scenery, or concocting a new master plan, were lost in their own thoughts. As for Mazeka, he was cataloging motives. Why Makuta Teridax wanted Roodaka on board was beyond him – or maybe he just wanted to stop the theft of the Thornatus by Roodaka. Of course, what Mazeka had said had only made it worse. He wondered if their newfound speed of travel was worth their unwanted passenger. Soon, they had left the terrain of desert canyon behind and glided under a canopy of greenery, which, after an hours’ travel, gave way to a grassy carpet. To the left were ice covered mountains of hard stone, and to the right were shorter mountains which emitted steam and smoke. Various Agori were scouting the area, some scratching notes on tablets, others huddled in groups, pointing out various elements of the area amid much nodding. “The site for New Atero” said Roodaka. Makuta steered the craft toward the right, away from the river that cut through the ridge that the Thornatus had just climbed. Slowly, they slid off the ridge and to the base of one of the smoking mountains. “We’re looking for a site for the new Ta-Koro” Vakama explained as the group clambered off the machine, stretching stiff muscles and looking around for enemies. “Okay, so this is going to be quick” said Roodaka. “Climb mountain, make sure mountain is not a hazard, climb down, reverse direction, and I end up…somewhere.” The Keelerak sighed in disgust, muttering under its breath. Roodaka kicked it in irritation. “Move, you wretched beast, or I’ll throw you into the lava.” And so they climbed up the mountain. Mazeka didn’t particularly have much trouble – there were plenty of hand and footholds, and it wasn’t like he was a complete rookie at this. He was also beginning to like the chance to enjoy a simple challenge – until he saw Makuta Teridax using his hammer to clamber up the slope with Turaga Vakama on his back. “it is fair and just!” yelled Roodaka and Mazeka. Mazeka scowled and kept climbing, but he could hear Roodaka and the Visorak talking in excited tones behind him, which encouraged him to pick up the pace. A web shot past Mazeka’s ear. He looked to see Roodaka swing past him, holding two ends of a Visorak web in one hand and the Visorak in the other. As Mazeka watched, the former Visorak viceroy flicked her wrist, sending part of the loop over another rock on the top of the crater. The anchorage swung the Vortixx forward as well as up, allowing her to land in a low gap in the crater. “You cheat” said Roodaka, setting the Keelerak on the ground away from the Turaga of Fire. “I cheat.” “And I don’t have to” said Mazeka, marching in between the two, into the cloud of gas and steam. * * * White swirled around the Ko–Matoran. Mazeka kept walking forward, knowing that soon that the humid heat would be too much for him to tolerate. Just before he thought he’d have to turn back, a cool wind blew out of the north, and the fog around him sifted away…to reveal a sight that no other Ko-Matoran would ever see and live to tell about. He was standing half a kio from the center of a lava lake, on a long rectangular platform that protruded out into the lake. Directly in front of him, yet several kio away, lava cascaded out of a vent, perpetually filling the pulsing pool. Surrounding this, ribbons of pale blue cut through the dark rock, glowing in the evening light. But the sight was a comparably brief one – in spite of the breeze, Mazeka was already feeling dizzy from the heat exposure. He slowly walked away, and only strong mental fortitude allowed him to reach the side of his comrades before he was forced to rest on the rocky ground. Being a Ko-Matoran, he knew that he would have to leave the mountain soon or risk unconsciousness and death. He also knew that he did not have the strength to make the return climb down. So Mazeka watched as Roodaka and Vakama walked out towards the center of the lake, hoping that they would make their decision quickly. He watched the lava bubble, noting the fact that it seemed to bubble in some places and not in others. He saw the twin columns of flame leap up and melt through the stone in front of what Vakama stood on. He heard Roodaka say “Vakama.” and then, “Vakama!” as she dashed forward toward the severed end.
