  1. Almost a year ago I wrote a short story set on Voya Nui, focusing on some of my original Matoran characters. It was called Despair. It was soon followed by another called Tidal Wave, set during the Mahri Nui exodus and the revival of Mata Nui. Looking back, I found that while I still hold Tidal Wave in high regard, I grew to dislike Despair. The plot went by too quickly and we barely got to meet the main characters. I also realised I made a timeline oopsie - I envisioned the story taking place before LadyKopaka's Hope, but found that this story (supposedly) takes place before the sinking of Mahri Nui (not that you could tell). This was barely a problem, but it still bugged me. With all this in mind I decided to bring it on the same level as its sequel story. Despair is now longer and canon-compliant. I hope you enjoy it. I know I do now. DESPAIR A lone Matoran stood on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Voya Nui Bay. He was a Ta-Matoran named Kapua, one of the oldest residents of Voya Nui. He had climbed the mountain path to check on the weather. Kapua was renowned among his Matoran peers for his knowledge of weather phenomena and his remarkable ability to accurately predict coming storms. Up on the cliff he had a good view of the horizon. The sky was clear and only a slight breeze blew between the rocks. Kapua was about to head back down when he saw something move further down. A small grey figure, possibly another Matoran. What was he doing up here? Before Kapua could think of a reason, the figure vanished. The Ta-Matoran did not dwell on what he saw. He grabbed his Lightning Rod and slowly started to descend. *** In the place of the Bay there used to be a large Matoran settlement called Mahri Nui. The settlement, resting on a mass of volcanic rock, created not long after a deadly cataclysm, was one of the most populous and most industrious regions on the island. Was. It had only been a few years since it sank. Kapua had many friends from Mahri Nui and it was still hard to believe they were gone. But there was no time to grieve, for another storm could come and destroy what little Matoran life was left on Voya Nui. It was up to Kapua to see it coming. Lately, storms seemed to be getting more and more common… The Ta-Matoran was back on the cliff. He had a bad feeling the calm weather was a harbinger of something far more destructive, so he started taking daily trips up the mountainside. Every time he came, a slight wind blew and there was nothing on the horizon. But he did see someone roaming up and down the Bay. A De-Matoran with a mismatched orange arm. He seemed to be looking for something. Kapua saw him again that day. The Ta-Matoran stepped carefully, trying to make as little noise as possible. No doubt the De-Matoran could hear him regardless. And he did. He looked and saw the Ta-Matoran approach. Kapua addressed the wanderer with a careful whisper: "Hello." *** Two Matoran sat on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Voya Nui Bay, engaged in silent conversation. The De-Matoran turned out to be named Vinurr. When asked by Kapua, what he was doing in the mountains, he simply replied: "Looking". He was shy and didn't talk much, but he seemed to appreciate Kapua's company. The Ta-Matoran was more than happy to stay by his side. "There was this Fa-Matoran I met on a voyage once." Kapua entertained his new friend with stories. "He was the captain of an old cargo ship. Farda, I think his name was. He was the best navigator on the continent." Vinurr listened intensely. "He only had one functional optical sensor, but he still knew where was north and where was south. I travelled with him a lot. He taught me how to recognize storm clouds. You see, it's all in the colour. Storm clouds are much darker than ordinary ones. Hah, Farda used to say that's because Makuta- Hold on." Kapua thought he saw something on the horizon. Something dark and foreboding. As if on cue, a strong wind blew, almost knocking Kapua back down. Below, the water crashed against the cliffs. Kapua felt a sense of unease pass through him. He knew what all these signs meant. He turned to Vinurr. "Come," the Ta-Matoran said gently. "We must go and warn the others." *** Garan blinked. He couldn't believe what his Ta-Matoran friend was telling him. "A hurricane? Are you sure, Kapua?" "I'm more than certain. It might be in a few days but it's going to hit us sooner or later. I saw the signs." The Onu-Matoran crossed his fingers, considering the warning. "Alright," he said. "We'll begin the evacuation immediately." Kapua nodded. The last time they had a hurricane on Voya Nui was several hundred years ago. The Matoran knew how serious the situation was. They lived through it. Garan saluted and ran towards the village centre to sound the alarm. Kapua meanwhile glanced at a startled Vinurr. "It's okay," he said to him. "It's only a storm. It'll be over before you know it." Vinurr smiled weakly. *** The weather worsened in the following days. The wind was strong enough to break trees and lift roofs. A heavy rain pounded at the ground and widened streams. There was no doubt: a hurricane was about to pass. Kapua was huddling under a rocky overhang with the other Matoran. He was nervous, but not because of the storm. He sought Garan. "Where is Vinurr?" When he saw confusion on the Onu-Matoran's face, he added: "The De-Matoran, the one with an orange arm. Did you see him?" Garan shook his head. "I didn't see him anywhere." Where could he be?!, Kapua thought to himself. Then he gulped. He ran out of the shelter towards the mountain path. *** Kapua ran as fast as his weak legs would allow him. If he was right, then Vinurr would be at the Bay. He climbed, digging the tip of the Rod into the harsh rock. As the wind roared, he remembered the first ever hurricane to hit Voya Nui almost a thousand years ago. The blasted stone. The ruined houses. The mangled corpses of Matoran. Kapua screamed. He never wanted to see anything like that again. He stopped, searching for Vinurr. At last, he saw him, wandering on the cliff where they first met. The De-Matoran was holding his hands to his head. The sounds must've been unbearable. "Vinurr!" Kapua was shouting. There was no use in whispering. He grabbed Vinurr by the arm. "Come! It's already begun!" The two Matoran ran slowly and awkwardly. Kapua cursed Karzahni for the horrible work he did on his legs. Vinurr held his hand to help him navigate the rocky terrain. Not far away was the overhang. Kapua let go, much to Vinurr's surprise. "Go!" he ordered. "I'm slowing you down. You might make it in time." "No!" De-Matoran weren't known to raise their voice, even in the worst of circumstances, so the shout that came from Vinurr took Kapua by surprise. "W-what?" "I can't lose another friend!" The two Matoran stood in a silence ravaged by screaming winds and stared at each other, one in disbelief, the other in defiance. Lighting flashed. In that moment, a dawning realisation struck Kapua. "There was a reason you were wandering up the Bay, wasn't there?" Vinurr's head drooped in sadness. "He was a Po-Matoran from Mahri Nui. He sank on that day with all the others. I… I don’t why I keep coming here. Maybe to see him one last time." Kapua gently placed his hand on Vinurr's shoulder. "He was the only friend I had." "What was his name?" Vinurr slowly raised his gaze. "Suru," he whispered. It was then that a hard wind hit them both. *** When he awoke, Kapua was lying in a shallow pool of water. His armour was scraped and his back ached from the fall. In his lap lay his Lightning Rod. Staggering and groaning, he stood up and leaned on his weapon. He was surrounded by the many inquisitive faces of the Matoran from the overhang. They were all there. Except for one. "Did he make it?" The Matoran were confused by Kapua's question. The Ta-Matoran looked around. Not far away he saw a small grey figure lying on the rocks. A small grey figure with an orange arm. "VINURR!" Kapua dropped his Rod and limped towards the De-Matoran, hoping against hope that he was still alive. He fell to his knees and checked Vinurr's heartlight. It was no longer flashing. *** A lone Matoran stood on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Voya Nui Bay. He was a Ta-Matoran named Kapua. He had recently lost a friend. In his hands was a cracked grey Kanohi. The Matoran of Kapua's native land had a custom, where they would remove the Kanohi from the dead and give it to their friends. Vinurr didn't have any living friends, at least none that Kapua knew of. But there was another… Gently, he dropped Vinurr's mask into the waters of the Bay. As it made a barely audible splash, Kapua hoped that the De-Matoran's spirit would finally reunite with his fallen friend.
  2. Do you think that, just like it was for G1, we may, sooner or later, get writing contests whose winning entries will enter the official G2 canon?
  3. Here is my entry for Contest #7: Memoirs of the Dead. Word Count: 4442 ----- "No! No! No! This part’s too vague and this whole section is completely wrong!" Those were the initial words of complaint that I remember Nuju uttering in what would be the first of many lessons with me. I wasn't surprised. I had read his many academic evaluations shortly before he had appeared before me. All of them spoke very highly of him; many of the Seers who had taken him under their wing believed he was destined to become a fine scholar. Indeed, he was believed to be one of the brightest and most promising students Ko-Metru had seen in decades, maybe even centuries. However, there was a catch with taking on a student like Nuju - I've found there usually are in these sorts of things. For all his cleverness, he was said to be... well, 'impatient' was the politest word I managed to glean from twelve of my peers. And while firm in his convictions (a promising characteristic in any student), Nuju was said to be particularly stubborn - more than a few teachers had said that he struggled to see things from other perspectives. But then, of course he was struggling! He was still young after all, and bright ones like him always had so many hills to die on. From his desk, the young Ko-Matoran glowered at me coldly. I took no offence at his harsh gaze; among us Matoran of Ice, it was all too frequent a response. To the outside eye, it seemed as if we viewed silence as a perfectly adequate greeting. But among us, silence was its very own language, conveying moods and emotions as loud as a Le-Matoran commentator at an Akilini tournament. And in the silence between teacher and student, there was much being said in the unsaid. Nobody likes to be proven wrong, but Nuju's eyes gleamed with something worse than frustration. They glowed with disappointment. He held out the tablet he had just finished reading. "This cannot be a useful learning tool, Ihu." I walked to where he was sitting. An array of stone tablets were scattered messily across the top of his table, each lecturing on a different branch of philosophy or science. Nuju held out his hand expectantly, offering up the tablet he was specifically displeased with. I took it and examined it closely. “Nuju, you are critiquing a highly-acclaimed document," I began. "This text compiles the notes of some of Ko-Metru's finest scientists. I do not see how their shared thoughts on the Kanoka creation process could be inaccurate, especially since their ideas have been in practice ever since." "The information is hundreds of years old," Nuju grumbled. "In the centuries since, scores of mask makers have proposed new and better techniques to create Kanohi. These techniques are obsolete and outdated." "And what do those mask makers base their progress on?" I asked him. "They will always refer back to the initial data in some way. The technology that created the first Kanoka, regardless of how old it is, laid the foundation for an entire industry in this city." Nuju grumbled for a moment, his eyepiece whizzing back and forth as he re-examined the tablet in much closer detail. I smiled at my new student courteously, despite the icy glare he shot at me. He still had so much to learn. "Why am I studying this anyway?" he demanded, daring to sound almost defeated. By now, his face had contorted so fiercely and with such frustration that one could be forgiven for believing he was wearing a different mask. "I am not here to be starstruck." I considered this and smiled at him, from one stargazer to another. Dodging the irony, Nuju pressed on. "If I were," he continued, "then I'd be down in the schools of Onu-Metru. I know when I am right, and I know that Kanoka has no relevance in either the study of the future, or my own future." I had expected this much from Nuju. My smile fell from my face, leaving behind an altogether sterner expression. "You ask me why this is relevant, why it matters. It matters because Metru Nui's greatest advancements have almost never relied upon stargazing or solving cryptic puzzles." I turned away from him and began to pace across my observatory. Beyond my essential stargazing equipment, the room was spared any of my personal effects. I have, for many years now, been of the belief that a workspace serves equally as a reflection of its occupant's character. For this reason I had made sure my quarters revealed as little as possible. And for this moment in particular, perhaps it was all the better for that. I came to a stop near a massive window that overlooked the spires of Ko-Metru, a glass empire framed by a crystalline skyline. Nuju, naturally, frowned at my silence. "But studying Kanoka does not help us learn about the future." My shoulders heaved with a sigh. “To understand the future, we must understand the decisions that led us here in the first place. We can never truly dismiss our past, it's the rudder that guides us towards our destinies. It informs the way we understand it." When I turned to face Nuju again, he had a look of pure, incredulous shock on his face, as if I had just muttered some foul Po-Matoran curse in the Great Temple. "With all due respect, Ihu, the past is something we leave the Onu-Matoran to bumble about. Any Seer worth his work knows our future is determined by ever-changing patterns in the present. The past merely tells us what has gone before. It cannot guide us into our future." I frowned. "Without history, how do we study the future? Our past shapes us into what we're going to be. Every mistake we make affects the way they look ahead. What are our lives, if not a dialogue between what has happened to us and what we hope will happen next?” Silence. Nuju's stare again, which had now made the complex leap from annoyed, to exasperated, to white-hot Nova Blast of undergraduate contempt. In the unsaid, Nuju's face was saying something to the effect of: What in Mata Nui's name are you talking about? What does any of that even mean? Are you being serious, are you an idiot? Which, when he returned to the spoken word again, translated into: "This explains why your peers don't like you, sir." I couldn't help but grin at the comment. "I see they are being polite again." It was true, that the name ‘Ihu’ carried with it as much acclaim as it did derision. For years, I had endured the white noise that comes with being one of Metru Nui's leading thinkers. It was an inflated reputation, but I could only blame my own knack for prophecies for that. Many times over, I had deciphered Metru Nui's most cryptic prophecies with a standard that had never been matched, though in more recent years, I had become far more suited to the lectern than the observatory. Many of these were expected stops for a Ko Metru scholar - the Knowledge Tower celebrity speaking circuit was a well-worn path - but more recently I had been called upon to lecture in places well beyond my district – the schools of Ga-Metru, the Onu-Metru Archives and even in the most private chambers of the Coliseum. However, a personal philosophy that was all-inclusive of the past, while popular with Onu-Matoran, did not sit well within the elite circles of the Ko-Matoran. Personally, I did not mind their gawping and gossip. It makes my job all the more fun, truth be told. I gave Nuju a friendly smile and pressed on. "Those peers you refer to are the stubborn and narrow-minded, and I assure you I am neither. But for now, if I've done my job, you should have plenty to think about. We’re going to have many more lessons like this, so a change in perspective might go a long way in making them all the more enjoyable." Nuju snorted as he raised himself from his desk, then left the room without another word. It appeared 'Thank you' or 'goodbye' were to be a luxury. I went to my window and considered the horizon before me. He wasn’t my student, not in mind or spirit, but he was still new to the Knowledge Towers. He would need a helping hand through his first few hurdles, especially with Ko-Metru’s finest watching with hungry eyes. I would be more than happy to help him, but it would be up to Nuju to accept it and do the most important thing that any Matoran could possibly do. Listen. ---- I was standing in the lobby of my Knowledge Tower, one of the most distinguished of the Towers of Thought. Apart from the mechanical chirping of the nearby Vahki drones, not a single word had been uttered. That said, even if I had wanted to speak, I would have no doubt have been escorted off the premise - the nickname "the quiet Metru" was a surprisingly literal one. That said, it was almost a relief to know that the nearby scholars were bound by silence, if only because it refrained them from talking amongst themselves. It had been two months since I had become Nuju’s mentor, and needless to say, he had not been responding well to our lessons. My theories appalled him and my heresies outraged him, while my life's work was little more than the scribblings of a jumped-up hack. Nuju had attempted to dethrone me more than once in my own classroom, much like many of my colleagues had when I myself was a young Seer. He had not been the first to try and was unlikely to be the last. Many times over, Nuju had presented me hours of work that I had dismissed with the wave of my hand. There were always small oversights - too little attention to detail, too many presumptions in his arguments. He did not hate the fact that I criticised his work, he hated that I was right. Now, it seemed, it had finally gotten to him. I approached the group of Vahki, keeping a wary eye on the huddled scholars that dotted the corners of the room, their eyes boring holes into the back of my head as I approached. The squad leader, clearly of the Keerakh variety, split off from the rest of its team and approached me, taking long, calculated strides as it came closer. Beside it stood a serenely blanked-faced figure I recognised as Nuju, who was staring up at the ceiling with a placid, wide-eyed interest. I sighed as I realised the cause of Nuju's mindset. The Staff of Confusion was said to be the most merciful of the Vahki stun tools, far more compassionate than the Staff of Erasing. However, I had always found it unnerving to see the aimless drifters borne of the Keerakh's power, idly wandering in the streets. The Vahki commander turned and issued an order encoded in a mechanical whistle to its comrades. Immediately, the other Keerakh turned to the huddles of Ko-Matoran watchers and began shooing them off. I looked up into the empty blue eyes of the commander, who stood firm and motionless. I cleared my throat. "I heard of what Nuju did. I do not condone his actions, but I want your assurance that he has not been harmed." The Keerakh titled its head slowly, its mechanical eyes never flickering off me. A short pause ensued and a sinister silence clutched us. All the while, Nuju continued to stare at the ceiling. I cleared my throat again once I realised how long I had been rooted to the spot. "Well, thank you for your assistance. I will escort Nuju back to my observatory." The Vahki didn't reply. Instead, it broke itself from its motionless stance and made its way to the lobby entrance with the rest of its unit. Within mere seconds, they vanished into the blizzard outside. I frowned for a moment, then turned and herded the confused Nuju through the tower's winding passageways. We strode past several rooms of prophecy, ancient centres of learning and far too many laboratories. Along the way, scholars and students scowled at me disapprovingly, though I paid their judgments no thought. By the time we had returned to my observatory, near the very top of the tower, Nuju was back to his old self again, though he refused to look at me until we were within the safety of my inner sanctum. I seated him down in one of my armchairs before turning on him sternly. At times like these, it helped my office was soundproof. "What was that?" Nuju shrugged. "A protest.” I fought back the urge to pull a face. “A protest? Screaming down the corridors of the Towers of Thought is not a protest, especially when all you're doing is complaining about me." Nuju shrugged. "Sounds like a protest to me." "Not when you're disturbing other scholars in a no-speaking zone! You know as well as I do that the Vahki monitor those buildings around the clock, they'll arrested students for making even the slightest noise. What you did out there wasn't smart or clever, it was petulant and it was stupid! And what did you hope achieve with this? Humiliate me in front of my colleagues, make my teachings seem foolish?" Nuju began his explanation, but his confidence was already in retreat. "What can I say? I'm beginning to think they're right about you--" "If you were looking to embarrass me, then you succeeded: I was quite the fool for taking you as my student." A stunned silence. Nuju did not say a word, but I could see the hurt in his eyes, and I immediately regretted what I had said. My anger subsiding for guilt, I sighed and took a seat beside the young Seer. It was a long time before we spoke again. "I'm sorry," I finally said with a heavy heart. "I didn't mean that." Nuju did not look back, but I heard his voice. "I'm sorry too." A great pause. The unsaid filled the silence yet again. When it became unbearable, I looked to him and this time caught his gaze. "You have a brilliant mind, Nuju, and it will take you very far. But you're doing yourself no favours, carrying on like this. Maybe you were right to be angry at me, but whatever point you were trying to prove, this sort of will go such a long way in hindering you. You know that, don't you?" Something changed in Nuju's eyes in that moment. It was subtle of course, but the change was there nonetheless. "Yeah," he mumbled, a quiet but earnest concession. I savoured this moment, small as it may be. Nuju had not been my most yielding of students, but I had never wished him any ill. This moment was fraught and unsteady, but maybe after so much resistance, after so much anger, maybe now I was getting somewhere with him. Nuju's gaze then turned to the great telescope that sat on my balcony. "Perhaps we should see what the stars hold for us tonight," he ventured earnestly. "Not tonight, I think." My eyes were fixed on the twin suns setting in the distance, the orange skyline joining them in the retreat. "You need to rest. The mysteries of the Great Spirit will still be waiting here when we return tomorrow." Like before, Nuju left without another word. Like before, I returned to the window, stared at the emerging stars and looked beyond. ---- A lot can change in the span of a year. Turaga Dume can create a new public holiday, Ko-Metru can even win an Akilini tournament for the first time in 1000 years, and In-between all of that, a mentor and student can become friends for the first time. From my most defiant student to my most avid listener, Nuju's stubbornness had finally been tempered enough for him to concede on at least some fronts. He was still as sharp as ever, and analysed everything that crossed his desk with unrivalled scrutiny, but he no longer did this to prove my folly. Or at least, not intentionally. Unsurprisingly, lessons had become much easier with him here in the Knowledge Towers. He had even been permitted back into the Towers of Thought. The intelligentsia of Ko-Metru had begun to forgive him for his earlier transgressions, which I knew from experience was not an easy process. The upside was that it had brought some much needed normality back into my classroom. Today, however, I had decided to do something a little bit different. Feeling the need to sweep aside any lingering tensions, I had decided to take him with me on an excursion to Ga-Metru. I myself was familiar with the region; many Ga-Matoran teachers had asked me to lecture here and had more than once offered me a position at their schools. All were very respectable institutions, but they were not suited to me - I could never really wrap my head around those Proto Level examinations. But coming to this district, and walking among its dazzling splendour, remains one of the great joys of my life. Unfortunately, however, Nuju was not quite as well traveled as I was, and was immediately thrust out of his comfort zone. Like many Ko-Matoran, he rarely left the Knowledge Towers he was admitted into, let alone the Metru itself, so to see his reaction to the stunning scenes of Ga-Metru for the first time was something truly special. We began our tour with a trip around the Fountains of Wisdom, followed by a tour of the Great Temple itself, and then went on an expedition along the coastline via a plucky service called Macku’s Canoes. By the late afternoon, Nuju had chiseled up what looked like forty-five pages of notes. This was not surprising. "Next time, I should take you to see the musicians in Le-Metru," I remember saying as we crossed an intricate bridge overlooking the beautiful Protodermis Falls. "Nobody makes up an orchestra quite like the Le-Matoran. Their symphonies are truly spectacular, provided the choirs aren't singing in Chute-Speak." Nuju grunted in acknowledgement and leaned against the railing, staring out at the orange suns and the rushing waters of the Falls. He had heard me, but he wasn't listening. Instead, he took a moment to soak up the atmosphere of the world before him. There was peace here, a harmony that couldn’t be found anywhere else in the city. Seconds ticked by as the two of us just stood there, watching the waters topple over the cliff tops. "Why did you bring me here?" he asked gently. I did not look at him. "To prove a point,” I replied. Nuju laughed warmly. "What a surprise!” Ignoring his sarcasm for once, I continued. "I wanted to prove to you that there's more out there than an office in a skyscraper with a telescope in the sky." "So should I give it all up and become an Akilini player instead?" I chuckled. "No, not at all. But the world is not beautiful so we can observe it through a keyhole. What do I always say, Nuju? What do I keep telling you?" Nuju smiled wistfully as he repeated my own words back at me. "All of life is a journey, and the journey is not about how high you climb or how far you walk..." I took it upon myself to finish the line. "...It is about what you learn on the way, and how you choose to use that knowledge." We looked out the water again, Nuju's eyes shimmering with thought. He looked to me and said, "I don't think Metru Nui will ever have a Seer quite like you, Ihu." I finally forced myself to meet his gaze. "And it's time you proved me wrong. You no longer need me any more, your destiny is your own. I have taught you everything I can, and you finally have the only thing I have ever tried to give you." My student seemed puzzled. "And what would that be?" Water rushed over the Falls. "An open mind." ---- "Ihu, you have a visitor waiting for you in your observatory." I turned away from the circle of Seers I had been talking with to face a young messenger. "Please tell him to make an appointment first." Ehyre stiffened none too subtly as he said his next words. “Sir, he says he's an old student of yours. A Seer from the southern end. Nuju, I believe his name is. He’s already waiting in your office.” I turned back to the messenger, a look of surprise etched upon my mask. It had been four years now since Nuju had left me, and since then he had gone on to enjoy a very successful career of his own. He was scarcely found outside his new observatory, where his restless mind could focus without distraction. "Tell him I'll be right with him," I said. Ehyre nodded solemnly and left without a word. I quickly excused myself from my congregation and hastily made my way through the crystalline corridors of the tower. Arriving at my observatory, I opened the doors to see Nuju standing out on my balcony, gazing up through my telescope. He turned at the sound of my entrance and nodded courteously, the ghost of a smile on the tips of his mouth. I smiled back to him and moved to tap a clenched fist in the customary manner, but was greeted instead with an open palm. We shook hands. "Nuju, my friend! How have you been?" The lens of my former student’s mask zoomed in and out as he looked around the room. "I am very well, Ihu. Plenty of new projects to keep me busy, some of which I can't even tell you about. If I did, it would be my turn to report you to the Vahki." Though it wasn't obvious, this was Nuju's version of a joke. The only problem was he never made it apparent when he was actually trying to say something funny. Nuju titled his head, noting the joke had not quite landed as intended. "And how have you been since we last met? Taken on any more students?" "Not this time," I said as I took a seat in one of my armchairs. "This old Gukko's wings can only stretch so far – and you certainly strained them.” Fighting back a grin, Nuju seated himself in an opposing chair. "So what do you do now?" My eyes trailed off over his shoulder as I thought of a response. "I've been poached for one or two projects myself. Many still value my knowledge of the prophecies, so I haven't run out of interesting work. I am, however, finding myself drawn to other ventures.” There was a pause. It was in no way awkward. Many Ko-Matoran paused mid-conversation to collect their thoughts and catalog their feelings. "You're going somewhere, are you not?" Nuju asked. I refused to dignify him with anything less than a perched eyebrow. He was spot on, of course. But he didn’t need to know that. "And what makes you say that?" I asked playfully. Nuju shrugged. "The packed bags were a clue." I chuckled lightly, more to myself for having made that all so obvious for him. "A group of Archivists have asked me to be the guest speaker at the opening of new wing of the Archives." Nuju’s grin disappeared with that news. "Typical. Another Onu-Matoran expansion with more funding than it deserves. One day, I'll make sure they come to understand the importance of our research." I rolled my eyes. "Well, when you become the next great pioneer of our future, remember to name something after me." Nuju smiled back at my joke. "Consider it done." I peered outside the window and stared at the suns, noting how low they hung in the ginger sky. Deciding now would be the best time to leave, I rose from my armchair and moved to my desk. "Unfortunately, I should get going. I don't want to miss my trip. You know what those attendants are like when you're running late." As I began to make my way towards the door, Nuju rose and extended a fist to me. For the the first time in all our years together, we bumped fists. "All the best with your lecture, Ihu," he began, his voice filled with genuine affection. Warmth even. "Have a safe trip." "Oh, Nuju," I said merrily with a wide grin. "I'll be back before you know it!" ---- And thus concludes my memoirs for the moment. Being a Ko-Matoran, I feel the act of putting chisel to stone both irksome and unnecessarily tedious, so I have devised a better way to amass my thoughts. Indeed, many will question my use of this Memory Crystal for such a purpose, but I could not think of a better way. The Memory Crystal's potential goes far beyond that of mere data storage. It could be used to record entire accounts of one's life without the painstaking effort of carving letters onto stone. Whilst my memoirs are currently incomplete - my tutoring of Nuju simply being a smaller chapter of a much larger work - I will properly conclude them once I return from my excursion to Onu-Metru. Until then, I leave you with these words I imparted to Nuju in Ga-Metru, one that had him thinking for days: Life is a puzzle that cannot easily be solved, the bane of every philosopher's existence. It takes time and patience to piece its intricacies together, and then to understand its meaning in a global vernacular. If these mysteries frustrate or confuse you, look to the skies above and keep an open mind. Your future is not a series of events set in stone, pre-determined by the forces of chance. Our pasts are alive; the defiant and impetuous navigators who live in our choices and chart our course, no matter what paths we were meant for. We may each have a destiny, but even those can be resisted, and in the most extreme cases, averted. Our future is determined not with solid certainty, but with careful consideration of variables. The slightest of miscalculations, shifts in temperature, even impulsive actions can throw the entire natural order out of balance. And such a world is something worth revelling in.
  4. Just added a new content block to my blog that features links to all ten of the stories from my The Biological Chronicle series of flash fiction. Been meaning to do this for a while, but just been too busy and lazy to take the time to do it. You'll have to scroll down to see it, however, as it's at the very bottom of my blog. -TNTOS-
  5. Back in the old days, the Short Stories forum used to be home to many songfics, which, for those who may not know, is the name for stories based on/inspired by certain songs, with the lyrics of those songs usually inserted in between the paragraphs of the story at certain points. An example would be if I wrote a story about 2006 with the lyrics from Move Along inserted between the story paragraphs (though the song doesn't actually have to be related to Bionicle to be used, obviously). Maybe my memory is clunky, but it seemed like songfics were all the rage back then. I didn't write any (always seemed like a silly concept to me, even if the songfic in question was very serious and well-written), but I always saw some in the Short Stories forum. At any given time, there were at least a few songfics among the regular fics, and they weren't just by new writers, either, but by some very good and very experienced writers (think Lady Kopaka may have written one, but not sure). As far as I know, there has not been a single new songfic posted on BZP within the last few years. None. Not even one. Nor have there been any reposts of older ones, to my knowledge.* So what happened to them? When did they disappear? Why did they suddenly lose their popularity? Why did BZP fanfic writers just stop writing (or at least posting) them? Were they just a fad? Were they too hard for most writers to do and so they just gave up doing them at all? It's not a huge thing to worry about. Certainly I don't spend all my free time obsessing over it. Still, the subject has been on my mind recently and I just thought I would blog about it here to see if anyone knows anything or has any idea about it. At least by blogging I can get this thought out of my head, anyway. *Note I said "as far as I know" and "to my knowledge." If there have been any new songfics posted recently or any old ones reposted, feel free to say so in the comments. -TNTOS-
  6. Welcome to Warnings. This is an ongoing anthology of short tales I have written as warnings for various life issues that you may or may not come across. Read on, as the first tale is about to begin. Story 1: The Orphan and the Widow A long time ago, in the time of lanterns and new ideas, there lived a little orphan boy. The boy was homeless, and avoided orphanages. He lived on the streets, begging and stealing to survive. One day, he overheard one of the many travelers walking in the streets talk about a city where there was work and shelter aplenty, and many shops in need of apprentices. The orphan was delighted to hear of such a place, where he could start a new life. However, the city in question was a very long ways away, and the only way to get there was by train. So, the boy tried to beg for the money he could to buy a train ticket, but was ignored by everybody, and when he tried to steal money, he was promptly noticed and driven away. After a week of trying, he was about to give up, and started to cry. Out of nowhere, a middle-aged woman walked up to him and asked him what was wrong. He explained his problems, and the woman decided to give him the money he needed. The orphan thanked her profusely for her kindness, and went to get his ticket. Years later, the orphan had grown into a highly successful businessman, having taken over the bank he had apprenticed in. Very rich, he had become full of pride and had a very large ego. One morning, he was out for a walk and came across an old widow, begging for money or food. By chance, this widow was the very same woman who had been so kind to him all those years ago. Once her husband had died, she was left with no source of income, and her children all lived very far away. Not recognizing the woman, the orphan-turned-businessman simply scoffed at her, called her a stupid old hag, and walked away. Beware your pride, lest it outweigh your kindness.
  7. The Ambage Short Story Review Pass (approved by Hahli Husky) To write well, you need constructive criticism. No writer is perfect--everyone can improve. Therefore, reviews are necessary. Everyone posts stories on BZPower to get feedback. This "Review Pass" system will help with that. A place where, if you review a story, you can get a review of your own story. Here's how it works: You review the requested story last posted. You then post one of your own stories for the next reviewer. The next reviewer will read your story and then post one of theirs for the next. Please see the first three comments by myself and Nuile as an example for how this works (however, all reviews must be new). Please keep in mind the following: First you post to claim the review. Then you review; only then do you edit your post and make your review request. No "I'll get to it later." If you do not edit your post with your review within a few hours, I will request that your post be deleted and another member is free to post. You may request a review for one of your own works or for the work of another writer. You may request reviews for the same story more than once, but bear in mind that you will run out of fresh reviewers sooner or later.Off Topic Culture stories are entirely admissible.Short stories only.See the Achievements blog entry for the achievements you can get using the Review Pass. All reviews must be new reviews. The first three posts were just an example for how the system works -- all reviews cannot be previously posted on BZPower. This is for Ambage members only. However, we allow anyone to join, so all you have to do is post in that topic stating your intention to join. Now then, get reviewing!
  8. Gotta calm everyone down after all that drama in my last blog entry, gosh. Here's a nice story, super short and junk. I even illustrated it myself. IT'S ABOUT FISH
  9. It appears that my story library's first (and thus far, only) post is full because whenever I edit something new in, the end of the post disappears, leaving a summary of an SS that is only half-complete.So I was wondering, can I make another post in my library that is basically a continuation of the first post? I want to be able to add more stories to my library, which I really can't do in its current state, so I would like to know if that is against the rules or not. As far as I know it isn't, but I just want to be sure so I don't accidentally get into trouble.-TNTOS-
  10. 11. So after joining 55555's Short Story Write Offs which later became Velox's Short Story Ambage, I decided to keep track of what I write and post them here. All stories will have a G to PG-13 rating for reference and a name. It will be constantly updated so feel free to leave any comments. Most of the short stories were thought of and written after being given a random "theme". Then I had fifteen minutes to write the story before I sent it in. It's not as easy as I thought it would be. Coming up with an idea that matches it well but not too obvious, and sometimes I want something completely different. And writing it is a completely different story. You have to rush through it in certain areas, and save yourself time to reread it and edit it... However most of these stories are unedited so bear with me.Fewer short stories that were written specifically for the Ambage Challenges, I'll also place here and eventually color in a distinction between the Write Offs and Challenges in the below contents. 12. As you look around the room, you see a dark being emerge from one of the chamber's shadowy corners, his appearance silhouetted by the lone candles upon the wall behind. His eyes glow a bright, piercing blue, the only shapes discernible against his shadowed form. The mysterious being begins to slowly descend a flight of stone stairs, but turns and beckons for you to follow with a wave of his hand before continuing. You follow.Torches on either side of the passage light your way, and in their amber illumination the being is thrown into relief; his armor glints of bronzed brown and silver, and two gleaming swords glisten upon his back. Upon reaching the bottom of the staircase, he stops, looks cautiously to both sides, and pulls out an ornate and ancient brass key from his cloth back-pack. He advances to a large wooden door, warped by time, at the far wall of the room, slowly pushes the key into the lock, and twists. An audible click is heard, and the heavy door swings open, revealing nothing but darkness. After taking a torch from its bracket, he beckons to you once again to follow with a silent motion of his hand. The portal opens into a massive octagonal room, with a tall, spired ceiling. The cathedral-like room is dark, its eight walls shrouded from view. The only source of visibility radiated from a gigantic iron chandelier, filled with candles, slung high from the roof's zenith. The mysterious being moves slowly to the side from the door, making his way toward a short stone wall set slightly inside of the outer wall. It is hollowed at the top, and this canyon is filled with a glistening liquid. As your guide sets the head of his torch to the fluid, and it catches flame, you realize that it is oil.As the spreading fire rockets around the chamber on its eight-sided trough, the walls are finally revealed to your gaze; they are lined with bookshelves, all filled with countless old and worn books. The shelves extend upward seemingly endlessly, a tall, sliding ladder the only form of access. The being with you observes the room's unveiling briefly, but doesn't hesitate. He strides over to a nearby shelf and plucks one of the elderly volumes from its home, handing it to you.Although he never said a word, the sparkle in his dark eye seemed to speak to you: Read. ~ :: Short Stories :: ~ The Tower :: [New! ~ COT] A quick view of the main character (Detective Calvin Duster) in a (series of) novel(s) I am planning, showing a bit of who he is and the values he has. 13. I'm hoping we can have a Library discussion topic, for anything concerning the Library Forum on BZP. If anyone has ideas they'd like to talk about, such as before writing, or while writing Short Stories or Epics (and Comedies though I'm not familiar with writing them myself), discuss here. Some start off questions I have:What ideas do you like to portray in your Bionicle Stories? A lot of my stories have to do with letting go of things and moving forward. Or probably redemption for things done in the past. I like to write those stories the best because there is so much room for character development, whether the character will learn their lesson and use it for good, or if they won't.What's your favorite genre to write about?Adventure with character examination throughout and a touch of mystery. :3Why do you post stories and when do you find time to read other entries? People have given better reasons below then I have, so I'll be taking their words to help explain it. Writing is satisfying whenever I'd like to get points and my own reasoning across. I enjoy writing these huge illustrations just to reach an ending that people can relate to in real life. (even if the entire tale is about robots that fight eachother in another giant robot)I try to find time to read other entries by friends on BZP, and even if I don't know the writer. Only differences is I know the authors I enjoy reading, have good stories to tell. For those I don't know, it can be a wild card, so that makes it a little difficult to get through, if it starts off slow or uninteresting.Do you enjoy Epics or Short Stories more and which do you enjoy writing for overall?I've written two Epics, one not finished and many Short Stories. My short stories tend to be very long, but I enjoy writing them over all. If you can write on that has so much emotion in it, over characters you'll probably never see again but wish to, you've done something write. And I enjoy epics, but it's hard for me to create a complete plot to cover it all and hold a reader's attention.Contest ideas for the Library? There have been some great Contest ideas down there, but that one on Co-Authoring sounds unique and interesting. The most difficult, the longest, shortest and easiest written and published stories you've done? Well, the most difficult story I've written was probably Moment of Fragile Courage. I redrafted it many times, and I just couldn't get the overall feeling of it write until it was published. Even after that, I changed the ending around. It got good feedback though, so I guess it was okay. The longest Short Story was probably Divided We Fall. And longest Epic was Second Chance (Co-Authoring).Shortest story was actually for a member created contest where you had to write a story under 600 words. That was tough to do, but it came out okay. It's called Sight.Easiest story I wrote was something that took me two months to write. But I wrote half of the story in one day, forgot about it, and when I found it later, wrote the second half in another day. So it took me a few hours to write overall. :B Return. Very easy, the plot and all the meaning was just something I could type up fast.Short Stories and Epics that are your favorites?Wow I have a lot, and I know I'm going to forget some...Anything by Peach 00, Aderia, Velox, Cederak, Sumiki and a few other people I've forgotten. ;-;Recently, I've very much enjoyed An Aftermath, Time and Tide, Redemption, Between Two Eternities, The Islander, Care, Perfectionist and To Fly. Before BZP went down I had a lot more. :/I've seen a large amount of Library discussion on the Blogs before, so discussions by the authors and readers on BZP shouldn't be too hard to muster up. =D

  16. Credit to Chrome for the banner Welcome, one and all, to the newly revised and updated Short Stories Critics Club! However, there have been some changes made, so make sure to read this whole post before requesting a review! As many of you authors know, it is hard for someone to get a lot of reviews in the Library here on BZPower. Unfortunately, we cannot provide a lot of reviews. However, we hope to provide something better: One in-depth review by one of our very own critics that will help everyone grow as a writer. After all, everyone can always improve, no matter how good someone is. And that is precisely the reason this small handful of kind and helpful BZP members have come together: To help others become better writers. All you have to do is read this post and then post below using the correct format, and a review will be given! All authors must adhere to the Short Stories Forum Rules as outlined by the Forum Leader, Hahli Husky. Neither myself, nor any of the critics or co-curators are responsible for any short stories being closed because they violated one of BZPower's rules. Request limit ~ This depends on critic availability. We have a new system in place where as a request comes in, it is immediately assigned to an active critic. Critics will then have a week to complete the reviews. However, if all active critics are currently assigned to a story, then we will stop accepting requests until a critic has finished his or her request in order to make room for a new one. Check one of my most recent post (I'll also try to keep this first post updated) to see if we are currently accepting requests. One story at a time ~ We will only be accepting one story at a time from each member. Once your story has been reviewed you may request another story be reviewed, but please do not ask for reviews of more than one story at a time. Furthermore, stories will only be reviewed once.Civility ~ We will not tolerate any rudeness towards any of our staff. Also, please do not start spamming this topic with complaints of "My short story hasn't been reviewed yet!" and so on. Additionally, do not PM any critics along the same lines [or myself, for that matter]. This may, and most likely will, be considered harassment, and you will be reported to the proper authorities and taken care of. Not to mention we will never review your story. Please, no spamming in this topic. If you see an error, or it has been a while and no one has reviewed your story, you may politely myself or Snoopy82 asking whatever it is you want to ask. Make sure, however, that it has been at least a week since you requested a review. Of course, if we made a mistake when adding your story to the list, feel free to PM me any time, or post in this topic politely, pointing out the error. Short Stories Only ~ No, we will not be reviewing epics, comedies, artwork, or anything else that is not a short story. We do take COT requests, but it must be a short story.Back-Seat Reviewing ~ We've all heard the term "back-seat driving." This is what happens when a passenger in your car starts telling you what lane to turn into, when to brake, when to accelerate, etc. It can get really annoying. Back-seat reviewing is the same idea, where writers explicitly tell us how to do our job. We're here for you, but we also know what we're doing. So please, don't tell us how your want your short story reviewed. If you have a preference, you may explain such in your own topic. However, whether or not the critic reviewing your story takes such into account, the Short Stories Critics Club cannot be blamed. We're writing reviews how we feel will help you best. Only if the review you receive goes against the BZPower rules do you have the option of reporting such grievances to me [Velox], Snoopy82, or the Forum Staff of the short stories forum. If you have a problem with your review, please PM myself or Snoopy82 and we'll be glad to remedy the situation. Favoritism ~ Writers may not request that a specific critic review his or her short story. We're all hardworking people, and we're dedicating our time so that the authors of BZP get recognition. All critics are either handpicked by myself and Snoopy82, or have undergone heavy scrutiny and screening. We have full faith in them, and you will get a good review from all of them -- we don't let every critic in here. Begging ~ It is not alright for an author to beg for a review. I understand that you may not get reviews, or if you do all you get are reviews filled with spam, but that does not mean you are allowed to beg and spam. Don't give us that. Just post saying you'd like a review [following the guidelines below], and one will be given. This follows under the rule of Civility. We ARE currently taking requests! Copy and paste the following form into your post, adding in the necessary information: [url=(your story url)]Short Story Title[/url] - Author's name here You must link to your short story. Do not say 'It's in my sig.' Your request will be ignored if you do. Then, you must put your name under the 'author's name here' section. Either Snoopy82 or myself will check over each and every review, to assure that is of the appropriate quality. If we find one which does not give enough insight, then we will PM that critic asking them to edit their post and give them pointers how to improve. We value quality as a very high priority, and if you find that we have not performed to the best of our abilities, please, don't hesitate to PM either Snoopy82 or myself. Here is the list of current approved Critics and Curators/Co-Curators. Bios will be put up at a later date: Curators: Velox PM me if you have any questions, comments, concerns, complaints, etc. about the club or if you would like to become a critic. Cederak Feel free to PM him with any questions, comments, concerns, etc. We will be working very closely together to ensure that each critic upholds the elite status of this club. He will also be helping to make sure the club runs smoothly. Co-Curators: Snoopy82 -- He was in charge of the critics, but currently inactive. Lazzy the Spazzy -- Co-Curator Emeritus Critics: Velox Cederak Tolkien Yukiko Jedi Master J. Zaxvo Tyler Durden Zarayna: The Quiet Light Snoopy82 -- Inactive Critics Awaiting Approval: None at this point. Apply today! For how to become a critic, simply PM me (Velox) with your desire. Current critics must adhere to the rules in the post below. ~ Velox
  17. I will return The traveler went alone in the desert. He and the landscape were one and the same, their colors being mixed. He went alone, while his friends were watching him walking him towards their old homes. Some of them cried, others sighed. All around the crowd, silence. Even the wind was quiet, even the wild beasts were still, even the dry sun soothed its cruel light. He went alone, while they all thought the same thing: how possibly could such a small figure be master of… everything? As they saw his yellow, dirty, scratched armor disappearing inside their old homes, a young female started singing.---On Bara Magna, there was a famous song. Only the eldest ones did remember their grandfathers’ memories about when it was first sung by those who believed the Great Cataclysm wouldn’t have been the end, but a new beginning. They were great warriors, simple carpenters or blacksmiths and poor people, all sharing the idea that there was still hope. They said “There’s always hope”.---Her voice was strong as a rock and, simultaneously, clear like pure water. While she sang, their homes rose above the clouds. On her shoulder, a little beetle snapped its jaws, saluting the only one who understood it.The song went on.All that is gold does not glitter,The old robotic body stood high in the sky, towering on the ground. It moved some unsure steps; it seemed to be falling in few minutes. Not all those who wander are lost;Surprisingly, the titan finally took control of itself. However, it still looked like its old structure couldn’t stand so much weight. The old that is strong does not wither,Deep roots are not reached by the frost. The giant passed this trial, too. It was surely old, but it had been made by skilled people, by those it wanted to meet. From the ashes a fire shall be woken,A sudden, hard rumble broke the silence. Both small and high people watched to the direction where it came from and all fell in doubt: another giant was coming. But this was bigger and stronger. And driven by Shadows themselves. When it landed, the mountains quaked and the seas stirred, the trees prepared carpets of leaves for the ruler of everything and the rivers moved out of their banks to meet and serve him.The two giants stood in silence, then they spoke. The small one talked about joyful things, about peace and harmony; the other told him about power and terror. At first, the words clashed. Then came the turn of the facts. The two bodies fought, the smaller beings ran away, scared. The young voice went on singing.A light from the shadows shall spring;Beams of energy crossed the air, pulverizing everything in their path, and smaller, yellow creatures attacked the undefended fugitives. Some brave warriors tried to stop them, but they fell under the superior power of the Enemy. Though, an help came from the enemy giant itself and a few powerful warriors helped the inhabitants. One was clad in a golden and red armor.Renewed shall be Blade that was Broken,A lucky strike of the Enemy split it, but the desperate strength of the few won against the arrogant of the many and the Golden Armor was once again united.A powerful ray came from it and went straight on to the yellow beasts, killing them and distracting the bigger giant. In moments, it was gone forever. The crownless again shall be king. The other stood for the last time and filled the reunited planet with life. Then, the robot form disintegrated into dust and the spirit of Mata Nui went back to the Ignika. Agori, Matoran, Glatorian, Toa, Turaga, Rahi: they were all free.Kiina stopped singing. A tear slipped down her face and fell on the grass grown on the sands. As the Great Spirit pronounced his last speech, he thought: “ I‘ve set out to save the universe, and it has been saved. But not for me. This is my gift for you, for all your efforts.”The sun went down, just to rise again on a new world.Lotr quotes:“All that is gold does not glitter,Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither,Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken,A light from the shadows shall spring;Renewed shall be Blade that was Broken,The crownless again shall be king.”- The Fellowship of the Ring, Book 1, Chapter 10 “Strider”“There is always hope.”- Aragorn to Haleth son of Hama, The Two Towers ( film ), scene before the battle at Helm’s Deep“We’ve set out to save the Shire, Sam, and it was saved. But not for me.”- Frodo to Sam, The Return of the King ( film ), The Grey Havens scene

    Opinions Needed

Earlier I have mentioned working on a mini-epic called The Ghost King of World's End. I am still going to write it, but I have been thinking of changing the title. But I first want some opinions before I do this, just to see what y'all think. It will either stay the same and remain as The Ghost King of World's End or else will be called The Ghost King's Tragedy. I personally like the second one a bit more than than the first because it is more concise and dramatic than the first, but I want to know whether y'all think. No suggestions for titles, please. Just want to know what you think about the two mentioned here. -TNTOS-

  21. Welcome, one and all, to the first Short Stories Contest on the new forums! And so, without further ado… Theme: Take the title of a Bionicle Comic and use that as the theme of your story. See below for a list of names. That’s right – you take a title from one of the comics and you write whatever you want about it, as long as it ties into the title. Here is a list of the Bionicle Comic titles from BioSector01. To avoid any confusion, only use the titles listed on that page -- some comics have different titles on the cover, so just use the ones listed there. Also, be smart: Don't name your story "Lunchable Comic 1." ——— How to enter:The entry period lasts from Tuesday, October 25, 2011 (today) as soon as this topic is posted and will end on Friday, December 2, 2011 at 11:59 PM PST. This gives you a little over a month to write your story – no need to rush!To enter, simply post a link to your entry in this topic using the following form:Member name:Entry name and link:Any entry PMed to me or not linked in this topic will be ignored – no exceptions. ——— Contest Rules: [*]All BZPower Rules and Guidelines apply.[*]Your story must be new and never before posted on BZP. You can certainly have been working on your entry before this, but it must be posted on BZP after the start of the contest for it to be eligible.[*]No plagiarizing! Your story must be your own work.[*]No cheating. Simple enough, yes? You don't get anywhere in life by cheating. Also, if you suspect someone of cheating, PM me. DO NOT post here. [*]Keep it PG-13 appropriate. So no gory descriptions, excessive violence, inappropriate content, et cetera.[*]Your story must be Bionicle. This doesn’t mean you can’t use what some people call “human Bionicle” [where one writes as if the characters are simply humans with powers, similar to X-Men], but the story must contain Bionicle elements. Your story does not have to be set anywhere in particular in the Bionicle storyline, however, nor must it use canon characters.[*]The story cannot be a comedy – those belong in the Comedies Forum. You can have comic relief, of course, but the general story should be serious.[*]No flaming, bashing, or trolling! I shouldn't even have to say this at all, but if any of this occurs, you will be disqualified immediately.[*]Rule Change: You cannot edit your entry more than half an hour after it was posted. This is so that all the judges read exactly the same entry and to make things as fair as possible. (And note that this does not mean you can post your entry, get critique, edit it, and then enter. Any revisions to the story must be done before posting.) For clarification: Once you post your story, you are allowed to edit your entry up to a half-hour after posting it in order to edit formatting errors. However, any entries edited after the half-hour mark will be disqualified. If you must edit your story for some reason after that time, PM me and wait for my reply before doing so.[*]There is no minimum or maximum word count for this contest. Just be reasonable, please.[*]If your story is not posted in this topic with the correct format, your entry will not be entered into the contest. The contest hosts reserve the right to change, edit, or make exceptions to any of the rules. A violation of the rules will be judged on a case-by-case basis by contest staff. ——— Voting:Winners will be dictated by judges and all of you. The first round(s) will go to the judges. Once the judges have whiddled it down to 5 or so entries, the entries will go to the polls. However, the entries will also be judged again. Yes, that means that there will be two winners: a “People’s Choice” and a “Judges Choice.” Judges will be picked by the contest staff. Judges' names will not be posted until after the contest so I won't have to hurt anyone for bribing judges. ——— Prizes:Prizes will be announced later. ——— FAQ:To come.Other questions? If you have any questions about the contest not answered above, please post them in this topic. Chances are someone might have the same question, so if you post rather than PMing me, other members can read it the answer.First, however, look through this post to see if I've already addressed your question. But if you can't find an answer, or you think something is unclear, don't hesitate to post and ask about it! ——— Contest Staff:Contest Host:Toa_VeloxContest Assistants:55555 Ziko Friar TuckAgain, feel free to ask questions here if you have any. But most importantly, have fun and get writing! Here is a list of current entries.
  22. Hey all. I rushed a little on Chapter 2 - usually I do it in the morning before my classes but thanks to an alarm issue I slept a little too late to finish writing it. That said, I may release Chapter 3 this weekend if I get a chance. I still have a lot to do but if I'm free Sunday or Saturday I may finish outlining the chapter and release it outright. This isn't a guarantee though; if it's not here by Sunday at midnight don't be upset. Just assume it'll be here Tuesday (and it will). Someone mentioned a sequel to Nuparu's Greed in the short story topic. I'll consider it. It's a lot of fun developing a human character out of a Matoran. I can use it to convey a message in the story that the reader can look at and think about. Just a writing tip for the 5 people who read this blog: a message is important. I can get away with randomness in a comedy but in a more serious fictional venue you have to connect to your audience or they'll lose interest. Galigee's epics, for instance. All of them had a very human side to the characters and I enjoyed reading them. Bonesii (I think?) puts together some good stuff based on the canon but goes more into character development. Another good one I remember was The Turkey Shoot. I can't remember much about it, but it was awesome. If you have your own universe of characters, you'd better be sure you make them interesting or people will have no incentive to pay attention to them over Tahu or Kopaka. Also, Sunny was hilarious tonight. The looting at the end was hysterical.
  23. You check the address. It's correct: 142 carved on the doorframe. A set of wind chimes sway by the door, blinking in the evening sun.You pick up the muaka-shaped knocker and give it a few taps. After a few seconds, you can hear movement behind the door. With a groan, it opens. A tired looking, spotless Le-matoran stands in the doorway, blinking at you. "I suppose you're here to see Miss Yukiko. Come in." You step into a tight hallway. Wall sconces cast a soft light on the scene around you. As you follow the Le-matoran, you catch sight of sets of paintings on the walls by some of the city's artists. They're not originals, but very good copies and obviously well maintained. The Le-matoran finally comes to a closed door at the end of the hall. He knocks. No response. When another, harder knock fails to elicit a reaction, he opens the door, ignoring the DO NOT DISTURB sign. "Someone to see you, miss." "Tell them to GO AWAY, Rekki." "Are you sure, miss. They appear to be from the pub-" "AAAAh!!"You can hear a frantic shuffling of paper. "Why didn't you tell me that earlier?!" Rekki steps aside and motions for you to go in. The second you step inside, you are assaulted with papers flying everywhichway, clearly controlled by some sort elemental power. "Where are-AHA!" The papers abruptly settle, and you can finally see the speaker. She can't be more than a bio tall, and her green eyes are intensely fixed on your feet. She hands you a very clean looking manilla envelope, her eyes flickering up to meet yours momentarily. "Um...so...if you would please...ah...look at them in the sitting room? I'm kind of...busy right now..." "Of course," you say, smiling, as she practically leaps back to her desk. Rekki shows you to the sitting room. It is cozy space, home to several bookshelves stuffed to bursting with novels and story collections featuring artists from all around the city. You choose one of the firm leather chairs and turn the light on, opening the envelope. You take the first page out, and it shines crisp and white in your hand. 24. Hey guys, it's not GregF yet but it's a short story and I'm pretty sure it's one of my first cracks at one. It's about Nuparu as an engineer on Metru Nui. Go give it a look, the link's in my signature. Also, don't forget to give feedback on A Day in the Life on my blog. I'd like some pointers for the sequel.
