It’s funny how you never see the end coming.

It was a strange day to me and my friends when the Toa named Yli arrived in our city. News had travelled fast even before his arrival, so we all knew he was not a regular Toa. Yli was stronger and had powers no one could explain. According to rumors he could control all of the six main elements of our universe, but I think that is exaggeration.

Enough about his greatness, though. My story doesn’t concern that. Quite the opposite, really.

One of my best friends, Kynsi, has always hated Toa. Therefore his reaction to Yli’s arrival was a very different one. That’s the important thing.

I always felt Kynsi had become obsessed with Yli, for his power outmatched that of even normal Toa. I didn’t realize that he had taken secret lessons at the sacred ability of power transfer before he gathered his best friends, me included, and told about it.

Of course we were all amazed, me and the three other Matoran Kynsi considered to be trustworthy enough to spill his secret to. No one had to ask him why he had wanted to learn that ability.

I wanted to object. I have no love for Toa, but Kynsi’s plan was madness personified. I did talk about this with the others, but they simply shook their heads and told me everything would be fine.

So what happened? The next night happened to be a stormy one, so me and Kynsi and the others hurried to find Yli before he would command the clouds to stop. Lightning was crucial to the plan.

Kynsi was carrying one of those fancy mechanical tablets with him. Our city is a very advanced one. Not everywhere do they have so fancy things.

Kynsi found Yli.

He explained something to him that me or the others could not hear. We were hiding, that’s why. We were to come out at just the right moment.

There! Yli channeling electrical elemental energy into the tablet!

Power transfer requires four sacrifices. I did not know it at that time.

Kynsi’s spell was as powerful as it could be. Yli failed to shut off his power as Kynsi put the ancient magic to use.

The job of myself and the others was to be near so the power would travel through us first, so as not to overwhelm and kill Kynsi. I still have no idea how we all survived. Kynsi had not been expecting that either.

And there he was, standing tall and mighty with a heavy new armor on, a hulking titan towering over most. Even his face had changed to resemble that of a monster. His hands had become giant claws that could rip protosteel with ease. His feet were as thick as tree trunks and his eyes gleamed with the power he had stolen.

Me and the others were lying on the ground, hurting but alive. One of the others had lost both of her feet, while one had lost an arm. I was happy to find all of my body parts in their correct slots.

What became of Yli? He ended up a Turaga or something like that. I’m not sure how things work with power transfer, but it looked like Yli could not even lift his head off the ground. Kynsi had won.

Kynsi wanted to rule everyone in the city, but the Matoran refused. Kynsi could’ve easily killed them now, but he didn’t. Instead he left the city, taking me and the others with him. It was just as well, for none of us were allowed back inside due to our evil actions.

Events would eventually lead up to now. Today, when I am sitting on the ground and carving this story of the day my life ended. Now I am nothing but a servant to Kynsi. Well, actually I’m supposed to call him “The Claw” now. That’s what he renamed himself, and no wonder. Those claws sure are the most noticeable thing about him.

Once I had a life, a home and friends. Today I exist to serve a madman who used to be my friend. It is a miserable existence, and all of the others agree with me.

We never wanted that, any of us.

We never wanted.
