Custom Kanohi

Hello everybody! I decided to make this topic for people to share their thoughts and pictures on custom Kanohi that they have made or found. I will start off with this picture:

ignika.jpg

The topic is here: http://www.bzpower.com/board/index.php?showtopic=4354

As you can tell it is a 3d printed and painted replica of the VNOG style Kanohi Ignika. I think this is awesome just because of the lack of 3d printing used to make custom masks nowadays. Feel free to post pictures of your custom mask, 3d models, other's custom masks, and anything else that relates.

VV PM me if you have any of these masks! VV

Well, you've got to mention Modalt, because they are awesome. I got my order a while ago, and though most of them are just pieces for some special MOCs, I do have one that I'm really happy about:

Steampunk Akaku. How awesome is that?

Also, I've been working on my own custom 3D printed mask. It's still a work in progress, but here's what I've got so far.

Both of those masks are totally AWESOME! I wish 3d printing was done more often, maybe that could bring down the price ofcustom Kanohi. Unfortunatly, I don't have any awesome masks to show. Does anyone know of any sites where I could get some?

I totally agree. And unfortunately there does not seem to be a custom 3d printing mask shop anywhere that I have seen. The best thing I could think of is finding a good 3d modeler to make em for you.

VV PM me if you have any of these masks! VV

I don't know how Flintsmith made these, but they are truly amazing. I think he may have injection-molded them actually, just like Lego does.

According to this, they're actual LEGO parts that were treated with dye. There's a link to a now-blank topic in the archives that apparently explained the process before everything disappeared. (A Google search for "dye LEGO parts" still turns up several relevant results). If I had to guess I'd say the Kaukau was probably trans-clear originally, and the Akaku would probably have been white, as those colors would change more easily than most.

Oh wow. That's very cool. I might even try to make a few myself, now that I know you don't have to do anything crazy like injection-molding :D . I always wanted a purple Miru...

The one mask I always wanted to see 3d printed was this one:

Hmm. I didn't know that was possible. I've been thinking of making some translucent pieces lately for a project I'm working on, and this would be much preferred to molding the pieces myself. I'll need to look that up.

Well, I just picked up my own 3D Printer yesterday, so I may try that one out. :D

If anyone comes back to look at this topic... There are companies that will 3D print things for you. I've seen the work that Shapeways does and it's VERY good.

It sounds expensive, but compare it to the time and expense of running your own printer it's not too bad. They charge by the gram so try to keep your design thin. They can even print it in metal!

The colored masks I made were dyed. What I did to get the dye to not rub off was to heat the masks to close to their melting point. I did this by adding a LOT of salt to the dye to raise the boiling point. I was surprised to find how many different plastics LEGO uses in their parts. Some completely reject the dye. Some shrink when you heat them.

I also think that SteamPunk Akaku is sweet! Nice design and execution..
