"Okay then, to the markets," Sena said. "I think we should look to the sellers of antiques first. They could probably be our most reputable source."

Iola first walked with a stead stride to a doorway along the hall's side. Through their great twin doors was the Library of Clan Angavur. Towering to the top of each wall were shelves upon shelves of books. Arsix could see that there wasn't a single text in tablet form, all were leather, with pages of vellum. They ranged in age from seemingly ancient to freshly bound. Around them, Elders and youths alike read in silence.

 

"My people are too often thought of as uncivilized barbarians. When in fact, we have a civilization as old as yours. In antiquity, our people controlled all of Oki, and vast stretches of Odaiba. Our tribes never were unified, at the very least for long. Instead, they were confederations of clans called Hordes, ruled over by great warlords from both sexes. In the most ancient of those books right above our heads are epics, poems and songs that even today we read and celebrate. It's one part of our country we maintain with quite some fervor."

 

She couldn't help but love the place.

 

"As I believe you know, the Empire whittled our Hordes down, and fought us until our subjugation upon Mount Koshiki. Yet we still hold on to our traditions, while making steps to progressing into the modern world.... Now, to the armory?"

IC: Ageru Tamachan (Mahuika Hall)

 

Tama was rising upwards as she saw the slash come at her from below and to the side. The Menti was at this point completely in the match, ready to fight or flee at a split-second's notice.

 

She couldn't go up, she was too far up to get a decent height to her jump, she couldn't go to the sides or back, that left only one direction...

 

Forward!

 

Her legs, still on the move from earlier, kicked off as Tama's hands shot out towards Viitkha's shoulders. The Blademaster would soon feel Tama's full body weight on her as the younger Menti vaulted over her to escape her blade.

 

Tama rolled once across the floor and got back to her feet, turning to face Viitkha with sword and shield back in their proper places.

IC: Viitkha

 

If it weren't for the fact that both women were constantly in motion, Tama might have noticed the smile that played across the Soulsword Instructor's face. Viitkha seemed completely unsurprised by the Menti's acrobatics, in fact, she turned at an almost sedate pace as Tama righted herself from the vaulting flip. There was no flourish of her glowing psychophysical blade, something which the younger Soulswords had taken to, as she readied herself. Viitkha simply raised her sword, rotating it so that it's curved blade hooked to her left. She made no other motion, nor any indication that she was going to reinitiate the bout.

 

Viitkha was of course, ready, even as she purposely, and rather obviously for one of her caliber, shifted her weight to her back foot.

Chiyo decided to be more cautious this time. She assumed a traditional guarding stance with her bokuto (gedan-no-kamae) and waited for Higashi to make her move, ready to parry.

 

IC: Sora

"Do anybody we know have access to a printing press? We could do some quiet pamphlet distribution. Satire, propaganda, straight up defamation; it might help exacerbate negative feelings towards the Imperials. Not sure if anybody would hire us to do that-waut, there is this one Saihoko that recently moved out..."

 

IC: Ichi

"Normally, anybody but the richest Saihoko can't get a direct audience with the Toroshu on their own, unless there's something more than that?"

I snorted.  Kulrik was even more obvious than me--get rid of me, leaving him free to “investigate” with miss exotic barbarian.  While I was slightly disappointed that I wouldn't be able to needle him for a while, the thought of him causing a major diplomatic incident by being improper to the most powerful Taajar in the Empire was just as satisfying.   (Yes, I hate politics, but I like to know who people are.  It gives me an advantage over them, since they try very hard to forget I exist.)

 

“Well then, Kulrikky, have fun,” I said, leering at him.

 

I blew a kiss and promptly headed for the palace, totally oblivious to the Important People behind me.  Or yeah, maybe I just didn’t care about bowing and scraping and asking their honored opinions.

"Though you must allow me a small time for reprieve," she said to the Vilda, before turning to Inokio.

 

"Yes, Lord Inokio?" she said politely.

 

IC: (Iolatra Angavur)

 

Iola quietly led the Toroshu out of the library, and into the other wing. The armory came before the barracks, and went back behind them quite a distance. There was everything stored within its racks. Mainly it was Taajar weaponry, Katar, Kris swords, cavalry scimitars and bows. But further down were large numbers of half-pikes, coated in a small layer of dust. The Taajar villagers were, nonetheless, expected to go to war if needed, or defend the village from attackers.

 

"We do not trade many Taajar weapons, except to our vassal clans who wish to buy them. Most weapons our artisans carve are of Imperial type, Katana, Naginata, Jian. All are made to last as long as possible, and hold a razor edge for years. For example, many weapons stored there saw action in the last Fursic rebellion, a few the one before. If you or your guard wish, take any weapon of Imperial design, as a token of good will. I think even there are some in yellow."

Ic: Inokio nudged the Tajaar. "A word, if you have the time."

"Yes, Lord Inokio?" she said politely.

Ic: The teacher nervously scratched his neck and tipped his head to the side to lead Senavysh aside as everyone else seemingly filed out of the room to follow Vilda Kulrik on his adventure. "I need to be able to speak with you privately." Senavysh gestured around them and the now-empty room, pointing out that then seemed as good as any, but Inokio didn't have it and shook his head. "No. There are always spies in the common areas of the Palace, and in a library even the most discreet whispers can echo like gossip; what needs to be said can't be said here.

 

"I speak in the Empress' voice on this matter. If you have the time—and I'm sure you do—come to the council room adjacent Her Majesty's throne room." Inokio folded his arms and rested his chin on one hand as he mused.

 

"And, personally, I would travel with an escort, Jahagir. I don't mean to offend your own abilities, but when doing business with people like that," he said, tipping his head again, this time at the door, "it doesn't hurt to have several rings of defense. That's how the Palace has remained so unassailable. That's my personal advice as a Battlemaster, though, so take it or leave it.

 

"Now, my invitation?" he posed, expectant.

The Eiyu have chronicles our Empire since its founding, and nowhere within those chronicles is a time much different from now. Our virtues, supposedly given by Zuto Nui herself, is the justification for all of the things we do."

 

"There've been people who found ways to tip the scales, just a little, from time to time. I owe my own standing, meager though it is, to one of them. But nothing sticks."

The young Menti cocked her head on one side. Her curious spirit was difficult to keep down for long.

 

"Who tipped the scales for you?" she asked.

Ooc: That was an awkwardly placed line on my part, but he's essentially "inviting" her to a secret meeting. It's not really an invitation, though, as he hinted there's really no option.

 

Ic: "I imagine it's less a counseling and more, ah... she would like to parley in private. That means this has to do with matters more important than adding to the Rora's herd of horses. If you could be there at an hour after noon, it would be appreciated." 

 

* * * * *

 

The room was rectangular, fitting with a long table with a dizen chairs on either side, but it had been a long time since all the seats were filled. Roras in centuries past had ruled from the head of that chamber, hosting meetings in which dignitaries from all the noble clans came to attend. She would dispense her gifts, diffuse situations and maintain her status quo as she deemed fit, but it had been a few roras since the sovereign held that much sway on her vassals. 

 

The room was still used, primarily by nobles who waited for their name to be called into the adjacent throne room but also desired a chamber far more suited for intimate conversation, or the occasional servant who ate a meal there but scurried away at the first hint of footfalls, hastily cleaning her mess up. 

 

​Inokio wafted to the head of the table and stood by the empress' chair, which stood taller than all the rest, and stroked the table's surface with a finger, wiping a small rivulet residue of grease left by the previous lowborn user into a long streak. He frowned at it, then finally wiped it off with his cloth belt. Senavysh would be there any moment.

 

He took a seat in a chair beside the rora's and waited.

Senavysh had a letter made to Kulrik, to tell him she'd meet at a punctual, but later hour. Meetings such as these came quite rarely, and it would be dishonorable not to attend. So being flanked by two Zrupgars, she came into the palace, and into the meeting room. Inokio was there, alone. Silently, she dismissed her guards, and took a seat.

 

"Hello, Lord Inokio," she said curiously. "Might I ask, what would you wish to discuss?"

Ic: Inokio made a pained expression. "Her Majesty was, unfortunately, unable to attend," he said and pointed to the empty throne beside him. "Being Rora requires a lot of time, as you can imagine, so Yumiwa can't make every appointment.

 

"The purpose of this meeting is to, ah, discuss the future of your culture and the Throne. As I mentioned earlier, I speak with her voice as her advisor, and act in her stead now. Is this agreeable to you?"
