"You're right about one thing - there's been enough talking" Lantz called out to the person walking away.

Lantz moved one foot back and raised an arm, adopting a common fighting stance. He concentrated his power, willing a singularity into existence. It was powerful despite it's area of influence being rather limited. The Ko-Matoran that had now twice refused him would feel a powerful tugging force pulling him back to Lantz.

Careful now....

Hormd Gronjkr- Kini Nui

IC: Since Hormd had never turned away from the Dark Toa, it was pretty easy for him to figure out what was going on. Before he was pulled very far, the old Matoran managed to make his way behind a fairly sizable piece of rubble. It was hardly a permanent solution, but he hardly needed one.

"If a fight it is you want, a fight you shall receive."

"I serve the weak. I serve the helpless. I am their sword and their shield. If you want to strike at them, you must go through me, and I am not so easily moved."

IC:

The Ko Matoran was hiding behind some rubble, probably backing against it to prevent being pulled closer to Lantz. Just delaying the inevitable, Lantz though to himself. Lantz moved his hand so that the palm faced upward.

The singularity shifted and gained strength. It was above the Matoran now, already beginning to lift him into the air.

"A fight? I want nothing of the sort. Like I said, I'd like some company to the Vault - for all my bluster, I'm scared of the dark you know" Lantz smirked.

IC: Savnung

Savnung snorted. She had been quiet during the exchange, but the dark To a was beginning to get on her nerves, especially when he was a threat.

"Proceed by yourself. We will not offer assistance."

It was not her wish to fight, but the Toa was obviously aggressive. If diplomacy failed, then there was little other choice.

OOC: Joske from Ta-Wahi

IC

Toa Joske

Location: Kini-Nui Temple complex

Chapter One: Crystals, Temples, Secrets... oh my.

There was a small pop as my body rematerialized from supersonic. It took skill to minimize the sonic boom that came when using this mask to its fullest potential, if not learned quickly enough the unfortunate Toa could find himself on the wrong end of several violations and citations if caught doing so in populated areas. I suppose I didn't need to have done so here, but it had become habit.

Besides, being discrete was a virtue, and clearly I still had some work to do in that department - and least when it came to relationships.

A never-ending battle...

The sun was high and the air pleasant, if not a little humid; the jungle always was this time of year. As I strolled along the grassy knoll towards the steps of the great temple something tugged on the back of my head. It kept nagging until I almost reached the steps. Then it hit me.

The grass was red!?

It took a moment to register, then another to remember. It was after the defense of the entrance suva, myself and a small band of Toa against Echelon and a hoard of infected Rahi. One of the Toa was a Toa of Plantlife, and in the aftermath as a monument to carnage used his power to forever turn a patch of the grass here red. I couldn't remember the name, but I definitely remembered the action.

I could never get that moment, let alone that single day.

With a greater sense of reverence I climbed the stairs to the top of the temple, noting the scars of that battle, still unrepaired since my departure. The half-gone suva, blast marks on the stone, cuts and streaks on the pillars... a moment in time forever etched into the granite architecture. One by one I relived the moments in my mind, replaying them slowly, my fingers gently caressing and touching the wounds in absent-minded fashion, walking from place to place like a being in a trance.

Such is the legacy of the Makuta.

Coming to a stop I crossed my arms, stating at the pillar I stood upon that day, the moment the sun rose and I got my second wind. What a rush it was... what a nightmare too. Despite everything that had happened since I left there were some things I hadn't forgotten.

I reverently gave a moment of silence.

IC Mahrika

Mahrika turned to look at the Ta-Toa that had pipped out of the ether, before turning her eyes back to the Temple. She seemed oblivious to the matters unfolding behind her concerning her companions; all of her focus was on the temple, imagining how it could be restored.

Lantz' attention turned to the new arrival. The Toa of Gravity had had no idea that the crumbling temple was such an interesting place to so many.  He wondered if it was like this everyday. He didn't stop supporting the small gravity well he'd creating, which would be lifting the Ko-Matoran hiding behind some rocks into the air.

"Ho, fast footed Toa" Lantz called out to the Ta-Toa. "Would you perchance like to accompany me to the Vault?".

Hormd Gronjkr- Kini Nui

IC: His now raised point of view gave Hormd and excellent point of view of the entire area, including the newcomer. Crossing his arms the white Matoran searched his mind for where he had seen the new Toa before.

That looks like...huh. Been a while since I saw him.

"Toa Joske." He called out, his clear voice cutting through the mostly silent air with ease. "You seem to have fared well since your time at the Massif. Mind helping me down? This troubled soul of a gravity Toa has decided that I shall be his guide through Mangaia whether I want to or not."

"I serve the weak. I serve the helpless. I am their sword and their shield. If you want to strike at them, you must go through me, and I am not so easily moved."

IC: The Recluse

The Toa of Plantlife remained unaware of Joske's presence, too annoyed and focused on the Toa of Gravity. With a small trickle of energy, he conjured a pair of vines that anchored the Matoran's arms to the temple, preventing him from floating any further, then turned a narrow eye on his attacker. This one was violent and unstable, to make such blatant threats over the matter of being escorted. A worshiper of Makuta, no less. The one who had enslaved so many Rahi, his friends. Out of a crack between the rocks, he conjured a sturdy staff, in case things got ugly.

Toa Joske

Location: Kini-Nui Temple complex

Chapter One: Crystals, Temples, Secrets... oh my.

"Ho, fast footed Toa! Would you perchance like to accompany me to the Vault?".

The voice broke my contemplation, snapping me out of my walk down memory lane. At least it wasn't too violent, after so much training it was hard to drop my radar completely. That said my look on my mask was no doubt one of mild surprise as I finally notice a small group of beings nearby. Completely did not notice them on my way up. Were they here previous or had they just-

"Toa Joske!" A new voice called out called out, cutting through the mostly silent air with ease. "You seem to have fared well since your time at the Massif. Mind helping me down? This troubled soul of a gravity Toa has decided that I shall be his guide through Mangaia whether I want to or not."

I opened my mouth to speak, trying to wrap my head around the scene that played before me. A bunch of Toa, a rather rag-tag bunch if I do say so myself, more or less surrounding a floating white Matoran, apparently being help aloft by the Toa of Gravity that had called out to me first. But the Matoran knew my name however, and I was inclined to answer him first - that was, until another Toa decided to throw his Toa tool into the mix. A pair of vines shot up from the ground below, winding up the old stone walls before wrapping around the floating Matoran, anchoring his arms to the structure itself, preventing him from floating further in any direction, only to turn and bead a narrow eye on the Matoran's apparent attacker. I closed my slacked jaw and found myself smiling ever so slightly.

"Sorry little one, but you have me at a disadvantage. Most people know me, but I don't know them all back. Besides, this seems to be like a personal squabble." I raised my hands as if to back away peacefully. "I've gotten into too much trouble lately jumping into other people's business without asking first. Though honestly I wouldn't recommend going into Mangaia, guide or not. There are... things down there best left alone." I shook my head, unable to remove that faint smile still on my face. "Besides, last I checked, picking on someone smaller than you was generally frowned upon, at least last I checked; here I see two Toa playing tug of war on a rather helpless Matoran. You guys can do better than that."

IC: Darvin Le'Neer

After the debate with the group of fanatics, Darvin had found himself wishing to relax. And for him this was the past time of tanning. Despite the sun not actually tanning his body, there was a certain rush when the sun hit his body. With homemade tea in one hand, and a scrapbook with all his past articles in another, he made his way to the balcony of his home. He was soon leaning back on his deck chair, reading and generally enjoying the warm day that fate was kind enough to give.

Hormd Gronjkr- Kini Nui

IC: Somehow, Hormd managed to pull of a perfect bow while suspended in mid air and vines wound around him.

"Do not worry yourself with recognizing me. I was but a face in the background during your stay in our sanctuary. Not that he happen to be hiding it, but I believe that the one holding me up here is a Makuta worshiper. I would rather not go in to Mangaia with such a person even if it was not full of monsters."

IC: The Recluse

His vines contracted, pulling Hormd back to earth. His eyes widened, barely perceptibly, when he took note of the Toa of Fire. He had been there that day. Seen him turn the grass red. He had been wearing a different mask then- different colors entirely, as a matter of fact. They both had, now that he thought of it- that had been before he had had to abandon his Faxon. He would have been surprised nonetheless if he did not make the connection. Toa with bark armor were uncommon to say the least.

He made no attempt to gain his attention, however. The past was the past, and he looked busy. Instead the recluse turned his eye back on the Makuta-praiser.

Toa Joske

Location: Kini-Nui Temple complex

Chapter One: Crystals, Temples, Secrets... oh my.

That... changes things.

Unless the Matoran was lying, which I had no reason to believe he was, we had a dark Toa here, further supported by the tenseness in the air. I had felt it before, but now I noticed it, just how everyone seemed to be eying up the Toa of Gravity rather harshly - the stiffness of everyone's muscles, the controlled breathing, the hairy eyebrows. The Toa of Plantlife seemed to have things under control at the moment, the Matoran safely back down to a solid footing. That could change in an instant however.

Guess it's time to start practicing what I've been taught...

I became much more serious as I approached the supposed dark Toa, making sure to keep myself as non-theatening as possible. Gently I placed a hand on his shoulder, nodding to the Matoran.

"Look, there is no reason to be dragging along a Matoran who does not want to go, let alone would become mildly terrified over the decent. Unless he has explicitly stated otherwise, there is no reason to suppose he knows how to get there or more importantly avoid the dangers that lurk below. Even if he did I would still not take him." I briefly looked straight at the Matoran, still speaking to the Toa. "I mean him no insult, I have great respect for them, but I think here someone like him would be more of a liability to you than a boon during the decent. The last thing I think you want to do is protect two people down there." I gave a small knowing nod to him before returning my gaze to the Toa my hand was still on. "If you want I'll go down there with you instead; I was meaning to do a little exploring myself. I may not exactly know the way, but I can promise you I'm much more capable." I gave a small smile. "Besides, why drag him around when you can travel with more of an equal, hmmm?"

Hopefully I would be able to diplo everyone out of this despite my misgivings. I really didn't want to have a companion, but I wasn't about to have a couple of Toa go tearing over a Matoran either. I just hoped the little guy understood my strategy and didn't take my comments the wrong way.

"Wonderful" Lantz said cheerfully. He instantly released the energies supporting the singularity he'd created, causing the Ko-Matoran to come crashing down onto the ground with an audible thud. For his part, Lantz seems oblivious to any pain he'd caused.

"It makes little difference to me who comes along so long as there is someone. Matoran, Toa, even Skakdi if they don't smell too bad.

"So, Toa Joske I understand? Shall we begin the journey to Vault.

A thought came to Lantz' mind. He turned his head briefly to the group of builders hoping to repair the temple. "Oh, and don't call me a follower of Makuta. I would hate for my reputation to be ruined by people believing I worshipped a ghost."

Toa Joske

Location: Kini-Nui Temple complex

Chapter One: Crystals, Temples, Secrets... oh my.

It took every ounce of willpower not to cringe at the Toa's statement. Oh, friend, if you only knew. Makuta is quite alive and well... somewhere.

It's the not knowing where that terrorizes me the most.

"Yes, right, Toa Joske. Shall we?" I said, trying to bring myself around in a reasonable fashion to the task at hand. With a gesture I pointed towards the half-opened suva, the same way the Toa Maru took in their initial decent. Would also give me the best reference point to figure out the current layout of the place compared to what had been told. I began to walk.

"By the way, once again someone else has me at the disadvantage. Your name, Toa of Gravity?"

"Toa Lantz, at your service" Lantz said with a toothy smile and a theatrical bow.

And Skaarn.... said the weaker persona in the back of Lantz'd mind.

The Toa of Gravity followed Joske to the Suva, eyes opening in mild surprise when he saw it was half-open. Of all the places in Kini-Nui to hide the entrance to Mangaia, this would have been the last on Lantz' list.

"Ironic, and cliche" Lantz said in a disapproving tone. "The entrance to Makuta's lair underneath the 'holiest' spot on this island? I'm not sure which brother lacks more originality. I suppose that when one thinks himself the lord of all the universe, one cannot help but succumb to pitiful, grandiose actions."

They reached the tunnel.

"After you" Lantz said politely.

Joske jumped in, followed quickly by Lantz.

"Don't suppose you could provide us with a little light, Ta-Toa?"

IC: The Recluse

The staff receded into the ground as the Toa of Gravity vanished from sight. He was still surprised no member of the group had shown him the slightest bit of curiosity, simply accepting his presence as if he'd always been there. Not that he minded. Blending in had always been one of his strengths. Just not so much among Matoran and Toa.

Holding out his hand toward Hormd, he conjured a miniature wooden hut, offering to provide temporary shelter.

He nodded and walked a ways away. Finding a flat area, he reached out with his mind, bending the plants to his will. One large hut ought to do. With some effort, he coaxed wood from the ground. A thick tree, stout but short. Once made, he hollowed it out and widened it further, large enough to offer them all enough room to sleep comfortably. Having lived in the jungle so long, he lacked both a sense of architecture, and of basic Matoran living standards. In his eyes it was perfect.

Toa Joske

Location: Kini-Nui Temple complex; interior

Chapter One: Crystals, Temples, Secrets... oh my.

After that question I gave him a look, the kind that said 'You really think I'm going to use my power for that?' before raising an eyebrow, pulling out a lightstone, and with a tap flooding the circular staircase with yellow-white light.

"Pays to be prepared." I said with a chirp as I led Lantz down the staircase. The way the Toa said his name, his bow afterwards... I was beginning to understand why those above had quickly developed a distaste for the guy. Still, he was at least for the most part polite and so far it wasn't that bad tolerating his presence - minus those constant Makuta/Mata-Nui remarks.

"Originality, perhaps, but even you must give credit for it's location." I said quietly, using my free hand to stabilize myself against the wall as we descended the damp, circular, moss-covered stairs. "Hiding things in plain sight is a time-honored tradition, if not for the simple fact that it still works - how many hundreds or even thousands of years did it take us to find that entrance? And that's probably only one of many. If something works I highly doubt the owner cares if anyone thinks less of the method; the point has been proven and the results are unquestionable. Megalomaniac, perhaps, but effective. And in the end I hate to say it it's how effective your schemes are that counts, pitiful, grandiose, or not."

I somehow found myself enjoying this conversation despite the content. Probably because while not necessarily disagreeing with the aforementioned statement, it the reasoning and usefulness of it that was in question, and to be frank a rather useful mental exercise. Besides, I needed to learn get along with people at some point.

"So what exactly are you here fore? Curiosity, exploration, or more... private reasons?"

"Private."

The Toa continued walking, Joske's lighstone the sole source of illumination in the depth's of Makuta's abode. Lantz was not one to be afraid of the dark, not when he had served it not so long ago, but even he felt a creepiness as a whisper pass on the back of his neck. He suppressed a shudder, following along after Joske.

More footsteps, more darkness.

A low growl was heard in the distance, sound bouncing off countless side tunnels.

"Someone promised to give me something" Lantz said, deciding to break the silence. "They aren't currently able to give it to me, so I've decided to retrieve it myself." And with Makuta dead, he'll never be able, he thought to himself. "What about yourself, friend?

IC: Lash

Not for the first time, Lash wondered if this had been her best idea. She was new to this island, a stranger, which was good, since no one knew who she was or what she did for a living. But is was also a problem, since she had no idea what perils awaited her here.

After spending a brief time in a large settlement called Ko-Koro and speaking to some of the locals, Lash had inquired about the immense tunnel practically at the village's doorstep. They'd called it the Darkwalk, saying that it led down into the most foul depths of the island, where darkness dwelled and criminals hid away from justice. It was also said to be home of the Rahkshi. Lash wasn't sure what a Rahkshi was; it certainly didn't sound good, but she had to take the risk if she wanted to have any kind of success on this new island. If the tunnels here underneath the mountain called Mangaia really did serve as the criminal underbelly of the island, it was the perfect place to introduce herself, and start to ply her trade.

She'd already done a bit of plying, stealing several pouches of some volatile explosive substance called Stralix Powder, which she was sure would come in handy later on. She'd been walking for at least an hour now, and she knew she was deep beneath the mountain now. She could almost feel the oppressive weight of the place crushing down on her in the near darkness. She'd found a blood-coloured light-stone half-buried in the dust on the floor, and was using it to tentatively illuminate the path before her. It wasn't much good for seeing more than a handful of steps ahead, but it was enough for her to avoid taking any missteps. In this darkness, this deep underground, a broken leg or twisted ankle would be the death of her, and (despite the fact that part of her job description was to make other people stop living) she didn't have a death wish.

Something shuffled in the darkness ahead of her, and she hesitated. "Hello?" she whispered softly. She made out a soft glow further down the tunnel and allowed herself a smile. She'd found the other criminals already? There were two glows, very close together, and getting much closer. Very quickly. She threw herself to the ground as twin bursts of heat vision flashed past her. Searing heat radiated from them and washed over her. Once the beams subsided, she scrambled to her feet and flung her lightstone towards the source of the attack. It struck something metallic yellow and fell to the ground, casting the attacker in a pale bloody red light.

A nightmarish creature advanced, its serpentine head opening up and some quivering, glistening creature inside it screeching murderously at her. The creature broke into a loping run, and threw itself right at her, swinging out with some kind of bladed staff. She ducked the strike and came up behind the creature, almost losing her footing in the dark. She backed off and unfurled one of her whips, lashing out and looping it around the creature's arm. It screeched once more and tried to twist around to face her, but she yanked on the whip, pulling it back the other way. If the monster had had any sense, it would have let her pull it around so it could fry her with its heat vision. Instead, it continued its feral tugging in the opposite direction, and Lash was happy to engage in a tug of war she could easily win.

The creature had superior strength, but she dug in her heels and held fast, pulling back with all of her might. The barbs on her whip were razor sharp, and she could see them beginning to saw into the monster's joints. The creature, which she assumed was one of the Rahkshi she'd been warned about, gave one final, defiant pull before its arm was ripped off, leaving a ragged mass of scrap metal caught up in the barbs of her whip. The Rahkshi snarled at her, clutching at the steaming stump of its arm, where blood-like fluid of some kind was beginning to leak out. She didn't wait to see what happened next; she just ran for it, coiling her whip in one hand and grabbing up the dropped light stone in the other as she ran deeper into the dark underworld that lay beneath Kini Nui.

OOC: Open for interaction... assuming Lash isn't the only poor, misguided soul wandering the depths of Mangaia. If someone could help me in finding the Piraka and their evil freebies, that would be nice too.

"We can fight it," came a voice that echoed through the tunnels towards Lash. In front of the sprinting Vortixx, Aurum appeared out of nowhere. One second, there was only darkness within the tunnel; the next, a flicker of black and gold had appeared.

Lash blinked. If she had any surprise, they drowned out the moment she noticed the Mask of Stealth on the Toa's face. However, as she sprinted in his direction, she noted that the Toa had no intention to run; all he did was stand there, eyes gazing at her; no, behind her - looking to see if the monster would be coming. Though Aurum didn't have a line of sight on the monster, nor did he know exactly where Lash had originally encountered the beast - the sounds of a feral howl that sounded, at the same time, sick and slippery - was more than enough of a tell.

Sons of Makuta... That's what the Rahkshi were?

Lash was seriously regretting not doing all of her research before blundering down into the tunnels. Normally, she planned out every aspect of an operation to get her hands on all of the facts before throwing herself into it. But this time, she hadn't really had the time, nor had any of the Matoran she'd questioned given her much of an idea about what awaited her down here.

She ran to the stranger's side, breathing hard, panicked and, admittedly, more than a little out of her comfort zone. She was used to having all of the facts, to knowing her surroundings: to being in control. Right now, she was none of those things. "We should go." she urged. "That thing's mad, and I'd rather not run into it again." Lash wasn't one to run away from a fight, but taking on an enemy in pitch-black darkness that could fry her with heat vision before she even saw it was not how she planned to die. She'd heard word about an alliance of various criminal agencies gathering down here, and she wanted to be part of it. What she didn't want was to be broken into smouldering parts and left to die by an angry, one-armed Rahkshi.

"I don't think so." The newcomer replied coldly.

"Fine." Lash stopped and turned back towards the Rahkshi, quickly tugging the Rahkshi parts out of the spikes of her whip, freeing the blades for their next taste of Makuta-spawn. The fiery glow of its eyes became clear in the darkness, and Lash knew what was coming next. "Move!" she shouted, pressing herself up against the side of the tunnel as the Rahkshi unleashed its heat vision once more.

Two red-white beams of energy lit up the tunnel for a split second before the shadows came back, eating up whatever light was created from the attack and shrouding the tunnel back to it's near-utter darkness.

Pushing off against the opposing wall of the tunnel, Aurum surged forwards, weapons in hand.

"I'll distract the thing while you whip it at range. If your whip can grate an entire arm off a Rahkshi, I'm sure you'll be able to tear it to shreds. And once that's done, we'll be able to move on."

The Toa of Iron raised his hands, and three finger length blades, about half an inch in width, extended in between the gaps of his fingers. With a flick of his wrist, the blades flew through the darkness straight and true towards the Rahkshi.

IC: Lash

Part of Lash wanted to just make a run for it now, while the wounded Rahkshi was distracted, but it was the small, cowardly part of her that she always ignored. It lived alone and unloved in the deepest, most forlorn part of her mind, right next to that thing most people called a conscience. She called it a nuisance.

While the Toa or Iron flung ranged metal spikes at the Rahkshi, she ran up close, unfurling both of her whips. In the tight confines of the tunnel ,they weren't the ideal weapon, but all she had to do was entangle the creature, and the razor-sharp spikes on the whips, modeled after the serrated teeth of the Takea shark, would saw through the Rahkshi's armour with relative ease. If the Rahkshi struggled, or tried to pull away, it would be even easier.

The hard part was getting close to the enraged Makuta-spawn. It swiped at her, still holding its staff in one hand. She ducked under the blow, the staff nicking one of her hands as it passed, and she flung out her whip, catching one of its legs. She threw her other whip up and over the other arm, tightening a coil around its wrist. She pulled, but the Rahkshi pulled back, moving its foot backwards to brace itself as well. Her bloodied hand lost its grip on the handle of the whip, and the lash slipped from her grasp, still hanging from the Rahkshi's wrist. It swiped at her with the staff, and she let herself fall onto her back, the staff cutting through the air over her head. "What's that, you want me to leg go?" she taunted with a snarl, grabbing her remaining whip in both hands and pulling.

This time, the leg didn't come completely off. Last time, she'd managed to get her whip around a gap in the armour, in the joints. This time, she basically shredded the entire lower part of the limb, grinding it into twisting shreds of scrap that blocked the blades, anchoring the whip to the limb. The Rahkshi teetered for a moment, but with another tug, Lash pulled it's leg out from under it. It fell over backwards, eyebeams firing aimlessly up into the ceiling of the tunnel.

Lash let go and scrambled away from the enraged creature, giving herself more room to move.

It was down, but it wasn't dead yet.

Toa Joske

Location: Kini-Nui Temple complex; interior

Chapter One: Crystals, Temples, Secrets... oh my.

"Private."

Interesting... I thought quietly to myself. I couldn't dwell on the thought long however as a low growl echoed in the distance, the sound bouncing off countless side tunnels. Once more it became deathly quiet, and after a short while it was Lantz who broke the silence.

"Someone promised to give me something. They aren't currently able to give it to me, so I've decided to retrieve it myself." He paused momentarily, not willing to divulge any more. "What about yourself, friend?"

"Me? Call it a mixture of business and pleasure." I said with a distracted voice as I pulled my little device. "A combination of morbid curiosity and answer-getting. There is a lot of history here and I wouldn't mind sorting some of the fact from legend." I paused as I looked down at the screen, several simple schematics tabbed. I could see Lantz trying to look around my shoulder to see what I was doing.

"Just an iStone, nothing special." I said quietly, keeping at that perfect position where he knew I was using it but really couldn't see what I was doing or what it said. At least I was being truthful; I had turned off the advanced functions earlier. Any close scrutiny would reveal your basic taskpad, but even so I didn't want to take that chance. I could tell by the quizzical look on his mask he was curious as to what I was on to, so I continued to be honest.

"Let's just say I managed to meet someone who had been here before, someone more than willing to give me some maps of the place. That said, it has been a long time since he had been here AND he was doing it by memory so these apparently aren't the most accurate, judging by the fact that despite the schematic saying there should be a hallway there is nothing here but a wall."

I raised my lightstone, and lo and behold, a wall. Wonderful. With a look I glanced back at the map, taking note of the anomaly. Judging from my own memory of how far we've walked it would appear that about seventy-five percent of the maps were accurate, though we could have just gotten lucky and hit the only area that was correct. Still, I was willing to put my faith in the little device if only for one thing: the secret passages it suggested.

They might be even more secret now than they were before if everything had gotten severely remodeled.

"I will say this now there might come a time here soon when we split paths. Something tells me that despite our need to travel together our goals are vastly different, and it would not surprise me if they laid in opposing areas of this here underground maze. That said I still think we should stick together if not for the fact that I do believe we are still in Rahkshi territory, and safety is in numbers. Shall we?"

The moment the Rahkshi's legs - one of which was now literally in tatters - gave in to Lash's yank, Aurum surged forwards, bushing past Lash with unnerving speed. Without stopping, he pointed his lance downwards, and thrust it with all his body-weight as well as momentum towards the core of the beast.

IC Lash.

Lash ducked down as her ally rushed past her with reckless speed, stabbing downwards with a lance towards the Rahkshi's body. She could see the creature feebly raising its weapon into his path, and she acted instinctively, rolling across the ground towards the trailing end of her bloodied whip. she grasped it firmly in both hands and pulled, ripping off the Rahkshi's hand, literally disarming it.

The stranger drove his lance home and the Rahkshi let out a wordless cry of agony, somewhere between a screech and a wail, that reverberated loudly in the dank, dark tunnels for several kio in every direction. When the echos finally died, so did the Rahkshi.

Lash let out a sigh of relief and picked herself up. This was definitely one of the most intense fights of her life. She was an assassin, talented in surprise attacks and indirect confrontation. This had been well out of her usual system of operation, and she hadn't enjoyed it. But it had been a useful experience, to say the least. She knew where she needed to improve, and would spend time in the future bettering herself. It was what she always did when she was inadequately equipped to deal with a situation; she found a way to change.

She knelt in the dirt to pick up the red light-stone that had been her only source of illumination. If she got out of here alive, she might hang onto it as a souvenir. She raised it over her hand, noting the deep cut on the back of her palm, and quickly wrapped the wound in a scrap of cloth from a pouch on her belt.

"We need to get out of here," her new-found ally advised, while she calmly and carefully retrieved her whips, picking pieces of broken armour out of the gaps between the spikes on her whips. She could see tiny slivers of metal caught between the serrations as well, effectively blunting parts of both weapons. When she had more time, she would have to go through and painstakingly clean and sharpen each one. "Other Rahkshi would have heard this one die. They'll come searching."

"Well, I don't see any further reason to stick around then." Lash replied, straightening to her feet and hanging her whips from clasps on the armour of her upper legs. "I'm Lash, by the way. I don't think I caught your name?"

IC:

"Aurum," The Toa of Iron replied as he pulled his lance out of the Rahkshi. Splatters of blood remained on the tip. Eagh. Disgusting. As he stepped back away from the Rahkshi, his left hand reached outwards for a moment as he focused on his ability to absorb metal, before he swiftly turned back towards Lash. "A true.....pleasure to meet you."

Indeed, that was true; throughout the course of his time upon the island, he'd never seen a person with a fighting style or weapon similar to the person beside him. Serrated whips weren't something he'd ever thought up; the risk of hurting yourself was already there when utilising such a weapon, but adding to it jagged edges and the risk you posed to yourself was one that could only be alleviated through absurd amounts of skill and mastery.

And to think that this person could utilise two at once...the capabilities of the weapons were absurd. After all, the fact that a Rahkshi had been injured to such an extent - arm torn off due to excessive cuts from the movement of the whip, legs mangled for the same reason - was testament to Lash's expertise.

It didn't look like this was the only thing she could do either.

Aurum quickly glanced at the Vortixx. Within the dimness of the tunnels, her armour was nearly pitch black in color. Spikes extended from certain joints, and he noted the thickness in her gauntlets; most probably, some of the technology that made Skakdi and Vortixx famous were hidden within.

Dangerous? Very. Better make sure where her allegiance lay.

"So why are you down here?" Aurum questioned as he began walking further down the tunnel, holding his lance up towards eye level. As though undergoing metamorphosis, the blood-coated edges of the weapon slowly peeled off, revealing the shiny clean metal underneath, created through the absorption of metal from the corpse of the Rahkshi. The peeled sheets of metal, galvanized with blood, slowly fluttered onto the ground like a petal on wind.

IC: Lash.

"I've only been on the island a few days." Lash admitted, rubbing absent-mindedly at the back of her injured hand. Blood was begining to seep through the flimsy improvised bandage, and she took a moment to find a more sturdy piece of cloth, tearing it off the hem of her satchel and winding it tightly around her palm, compressing the wound and reducing the blood flow. She'd stitch it up herself later on, when she had time, and then she'd get to repairing the gash in her the armour of her gauntlet as well. The Rahkshi staff had cut through her armour as if it were nothing. Which gave her an idea...

"Where I was from, I was very good at my job. Namely, making people dead. Or stealing their stuff, or stopping other people from killing or stealing from my employer." Lash continued, picking up the Rahkshi staff and turning it over in her hand. With a bit of effort, she managed to snap the shaft, and stuff the actual blade into her pack. She might find some use for it later. "I operated under a lot of job descriptions. Mercenary, thief, assassin, I did it all. Except, one day I went on a job that went wrong. It happen's in every criminal's lifetime. Circumstances spiral out of control, and one of two things happen. Those with a plan get out of dodge and find a new place, or get caught and spend a very long time in a cell, if they aren't killed on the spot."

"You had a plan?" Aurum guessed.

"Get out of there, and find somewhere new. I left my home island, stole a boat, and followed the currents to this lovely little island paradise. I got talking to the locals, and started hearing a lot of stories about some big-league criminal groups of terrorists, or cultists or something, who were gathering down here for some kind of big alliance. For me, it's the chance of a lifetime, to be part of something bigger instead of just working alone. I'm not planning to miss it for the world. My only problem is... I have no idea how to find them. A few made mention of a vault of some kind; is that where I need to go?"

"Of course" Lantz said with a saccharine smile.

A mixture of business and pleasure?  More like a combination of crazy and stupid, thought Lantz. It was impossible Joske had maps of Mangaia - Makuta would have never let any explorer, not even the bravest of heart, walk around his tunnels making little notes of forks in the road here, possible pit stop locations there. The over pompous Dark Spirit would have set his Rahkshi on such a being, or even dealt with the annoyance himself. Unless...?

Lantz took a careful look at the Ta-Toa in front of him as they walked.

Unless Joske's friend was Makuta? Or one of Makuta's servants? From the short conversation Joske had had with the Matoran and Toa outside, Lantz understood that the Toa of Fire had fought against the shadow in some great battle. Perhaps Joske had once been evil and had a change of heart forcing him to confront the evil that plagued Mata-Nui, or Joske had an inside man on Makuta's inner circle? It was conjecture, all of it highly unlikely, but there was a chance Joske more about these dark tunnels than he was letting on. A lot more.

Lantz had wanted a companion in Mangaia as bait more than anything else - someone to trigger any traps that lay ahead or fodder for Rahkshi. Joske might still serve that purpose, only time would tell, but now Lantz needed something else from his 'partner.' A map of Makuta's lair would go a long way to securing his own desires.

"So have you been enjoying the 'peace and tranquility' brought about by Makuta's death? Wait, let me guess - surfing the the lava waves in Ta-Wahi, trying to keep the peace like a proper Toa while Mata-Nui's chosen Akiri were at each other throat's destroying the island?" Lantz asked sarcastically.

"It seems we have the same destination in mind. Yes, there's a vault on this island, and yes, it's the place we need to go, but.......as we walk, let me indulge you in the history of this island. The significance of the Vault lies therein."

And so, as they walked, Aurum went through a brief history of the island. Of the Makuta, of the events that had transpired that had led to shadow's loss. Of the other sinister forces on the island that he knew were at play - that he knew would be converging at the Vault soon enough. Of the Piraka, who had appeared on the Island some time ago and had managed the achieve the impossible, answering whatever questions Lash gave.

There were certain things he neglected, of course; his own allegiance to the faction that their leader called 'Legacy', for one, was something that didn't need to be flouted in front of others. His belief that all this convergence, as well as the sequence of events that had led to it, was a power play by the Makuta, was another. Everybody believed the Makuta was gone for good; to say the opposite was only going to raise suspicion to yourself.

Belief? No; this was more than just belief and faith. Those were words used by the cowardly and fearful to alleviate their own burdens. This was more than that.

"The Vault was the storage facility for the Makuta. All the treasures that an entity like him would have was stored within there; it's entrance was guarded by a riddle, and a secondary entrance was also discovered some time ago. This entrance had a guardian - a sentient machine who engaged in discussion with some, and blew to smithereens others."

"It sounds friendly." Lash muttered.

Aurum nodded. "Nobody had figured out the riddle, and nobody had gotten past the Abettor either. Well, that is, until........."

*          *          *

“Avak!” Zaktan screeched as he passed inside. “Collapse the—“

“Tunnel, he knows!” Hakann roared as the rim of the passage passed over his head.

“Yeah!” Avak hollered, both in agreement and in outrage for having been spoken for.

The moment the sounds reached Aurum, he'd automatically activated his mask. Within the darkness, within the vast network of caves, the Mask of Stealth was spectacularly useful - not to mention the only ones who might've noticed him were a bunch of monkeys who were too busy messing around with each other to notice the cloaked Toa of Iron following them.

All except the Green one. It didn't take a genius to figure out the Green one was their leader, and if that one had noticed that they were being followed, he gave it no attention and continued forwards - all the way to the Abettor's tunnel.

The flare of cerulean light that he'd heard of oh-so-many times once again flared up, deep within the depths of Mangaia.

Zaktan answered by raising his scissor arm and dexterously flipping his tool around in his hand, so that the pincer bearing the vial of Antidermis was pointed like a weapon at the Abettor. “Do you know what this is?” Zaktan asked behind a snakelike scowl.

“We do,” the Abettor clacked. “However, the Makuta’s favor does not equate with worthiness. We do not serve the Makuta.”

“Zaktan, are you sure we have the right tunnel?” Vezok asked, careful not to take any steps forward himself.

“It’s the right tunnel,” Reidak growled as he appraised the Abettor. “But Zaktan clearly lied about the Antidermis.”

Though he did not follow and see it, Aurum was certainly able to hear the words spoken. And oh........to hear the mention of Makuta.....of Antidermis.....Of the Makuta's favor.......

A gift in and of itself.

The Makuta might not be here, but it isn't gone. The knowledge of that was bittersweet, but it was still knowledge that truly reinvigorated Aurum to his deepest core. His master's influence still existed - and that was all he needed to know.

The shadow lingers. And this was more than just belief.

*          *          *

"Now. The people we're trying to meet......they're inside."
