IC: why did she absolutely nothing twice? Am I losing it

"If we're looking for stuff to happen, shouldn't we hit the center of town?" he ventured, dutifully bowling over nine months of pondering in the story's equivalent thirteen seconds. "That's always a safe bet."

IC:

"Center of town sounds good. We ready to roll, guys?" Saeva looked around, bouncing eagerly on the balls of her foot now that a course of action had been suggested. "Red? Tor?"

IC:

The Akiri watched Agni go, and prayed fervently that the Toa could turn something up.

The Ta-Matoran leaned against the hallway's wall, letting out a slow breath with half closed eyes. Solving problems this way... It wasn't his first choice. He wanted to help, needed to help. He probably was too close to this. But Drigton needed his help, whether she wanted it or not. And he owed it to her, his duties as Akiri be . Waiting for the verdict was almost physically painful, so he forced himself to breathe. Relax. Getting too worked up wouldn't help anyone.

He needed to wait.

Ta-Wahi- Beach- In the Time Before Time

"Ame's back!" "Ame's back!" "Ame's come to visit again!" Several Matoran shouts echoed around the tents. The campsite was a temporary settlement filled with Matoran of nearly every element. Many had come here to wait to be accepted in the newly-finished Ta-Koro. Others, feeling they didn't fit in with the other Koros, had resorted to a semi-nomadic life and were just stopping at another temporary settlement along their endless path. A few were here to provide aid or lend their survival skills to ensure the vagabonds didn't starve or fall ill. All of them were cheery, all of them helped their brothers and sisters, and all of them thanked Mata-Nui for their wondrous lives.

As Ame walked through the main entrance, a mob of smiling Matoran swarmed around his waist. "It's good to see you all again, my friends!" Ame was a Toa of Plasma. Friendly to his core, Ame loved spending time with the Matoran and getting to know each of them on a personal level. He was able to know many of them across the entire island due to his Mask of Speed. Ame felt it necessary to visit with the Matoran due to the scarce number of Toa even present on Mata-Nui. In his opinion, the Matoran needed to see their protectors so they could work with a peace of mind. The Turaga shared with these Toa a legend stating that these Toa weren't destined to stay with the Matoran. These Toa were created by Mata-Nui to oversee and protect the construction of the six Koros. With the final settlement, Ta-Koro, finally completed, Ame hadn't seen or heard from his brothers and sisters. He worried for them, and for himself. "I'm glad to see you're all doing well! I'll meet with everyone later tonight by the center bonfire. I have some news to share with everyone." Ame finally waded past the Matoran and began walking towards a particular tent. There was one Matoran among these vagabonds whom Ame felt he could truly call his friend.

"HELLOOOOOO DID YA MISS ME?!" Ame hollered as he swung open the entrance flap to a large canvas tent. Inside, a plethora of shiny knick-knacks and collectible Kanohi lined the shelves and tables. A Matoran jumped out of his seat, spilling a glass of water. "Ame! Good to see you again, my friend! I was just about to head out to explore a cave I found the other day!" The silver-and-blue figure was Baden, a Matoran of Lightning, and known adventurer. Baden loved exploring the island of Mata-Nui and oftentimes shared the many treasures he'd discover with whatever community he was currently living with. "I just stopped by to say hello. Don't take all day spelunking; I've got important news to share with everyone tonight. Join us at the central bonfire, okay?" Before Baden could reply, Ame had exited the tent and could be heard joking with other Matoran outside.

Baden cleaned up the spilled water, grabbed his favorite walking stick, strapped on his backpack, and jogged out of the camp and into the forest. After an hour or so, he reached the mouth of the cave he mentioned to Ame. Thick vines crawled across the entrance, but Baden worked a few of them apart and squeezed his way inside. Drawing out a lightstone from his pack, Baden ventured into the caves depths. He was careful and quiet, in case any sleeping danger await ahead. But Baden found nothing, only a central tunnel slowly descending into Mata-Nui's deeper layers. "This cave must lead to something," Baden decided. "The walls are too smooth and there's no other passageways. There's an end to this cave, and I bet there's a Kanohi waiting for me there!" He quickened his pace. Soon, he entered a large, hollow chamber, bare except for the far wall. "I knew it!" Baden hurried to the opposite end of the room where he found a carved hole. "A key? I need a key? Maybe I can cheat." Baden removed a few carving tools from his pack, and before long had whittled a stone roughly into the shape of whatever would fit into the hole in the wall. Baden shoved the stone inside. BOOM! Baden felt tremendous pain before everything went black...

Ame was helping a Ko-Matoran assemble a telescope when everyone froze in place to stare at a tremendous bolt of lightning descending from the heavens. It struck somewhere in the forest. "It's barely cloudy... that wasn't natural.." Ame's Toa instincts raced. He knew this meant danger. The answer rushed through his thoughts. "Baden!" Ame dropped what parts he held and raced out of the encampment with his Kakama. He scoured miles of the forest in seconds before he found a cave with vines covering the entrance and fresh Matoran footprints in the mud in front of a forced-open entrance through the vines. A quick run around the cave revealed a powerful blast had indeed struck the roof of the cave, incinerating everything within a few feet of the blast, and generating a deep crevice in the rock and soil. The ground shook beneath him. Without a moment to lose, Ame raced inside the cave, descending down the same path towards the hollow chamber while he dodged several falling rocks. The smoke was still rising off Baden's unconscious body when he arrived. "He's still alive," Ame let a hundred different scenarios cross his mind. Baden was dying, the cave was collapsing, and Ame wouldn't make it back to the village with him in time. He had to act now if his friend was to live. "I must do my duty..." Ame placed his hand over Baden's heartlight and forced his energy inside the Matoran. As he felt his body changing, Ame noticed Baden's face was different. "What happened to his mask?" Baden wore a Tryna-shaped Kanohi, but it no longer resembled any mask Ame had seen before. His observations were interrupted by Baden's chest expanding, along with a brightly-glowing heartlight. A sense of relief overwhelmed Ame, but soon that feeling gave way to a feeling of sadness as Ame watched his Toa hand shrink. He was a Toa no more, but Baden had become one in his place.

"Ame? What are you doing here? Wait, you've changed!" Baden sat up, then looked at his legs. "I've changed!" Before any more words could escape either mouth, the entrance to the chamber spewed dust and rocks and the ceiling of the cave dropped down to the floor. Though the ceiling had some large cracks, the hollow chamber itself seemed unaffected by the cave in. "We're trapped.." Baden began to panic. "Calm yourself, Baden. You're a Toa now. You must learn to control your fear. Consider this your first Toa lesson." Ame stood up and paced around the former entrance. "Here's lesson #2: patience. I'm sure the villagers will come looking for us, and sooner or later we shall be freed."

But they never were. The pair waited, and waited, and slept, and waited. After what felt like a week, Ame began to train Baden in using his new powers. Together, they tried to bore a tunnel through the cave wall, but electricity proved ineffective, and Ame's plasma was too diminished as a Turaga. Eventually, they hibernated. Then awoke and trained and hibernated again. Over and over they repeated this cycle, until they would hibernate for years at a time. Time itself lost all meaning, and the pair forgot nearly all of their past lives.

After one long sleep, Baden decided to force his mask power to reveal itself. He concentrated for hours, until his mask spoke to him. "My powers won't help you." Baden jumped back in shock. "I can only teleport you to places we can see." "You can talk?" Baden and Ame both couldn't believe it. After some time, they learned Baden's mask had gained sentience from the lightning strike. It called itself Kualsk, and never had much to say. It slept while Baden slept, and over countless year Baden and Kualsk learned to work together. Eventually, Baden could rapidly teleport all across the room. But the room was small, so that's as far as they could go. Together, Ame, Baden, and Baden's strange Kanohi lay down to sleep again. They would not awaken for quite some time...

Ta-Wahi- Charred Forest- Present Day

Baden awoke first this time. He let his teacher sleep. He went through a routine of kicks again, focusing on exerting tiny electrical blasts at the tip of his feet with each strike. After working up a mild sweat, he turned to nudge Ame awake. Instead, he saw a Hoto Bug crawling across Ame's lap. "Look above," Ame's kind voice instructed. On the chamber's ceiling, several more Hotos were crawling around, with even more appearing through the rock. "They're tunnelers, Baden. They're our way out of this cave." It took all day, but Ame softened the rocky tunnels of the Rahi before Baden blasted them apart. Eventually, they climbed through the tunnels to the surface.

For the first time in ages, the pair felt the fresh breeze blowing across their faces. They embraced each other for several minutes before Ame spoke. "This is a forest of ash and destruction. We should leave this place." Baden hoisted Ame onto his shoulders. "Where should we go?" Even without direction, Baden took the first steps towards leaving the cave behind. "A name is coming to me." While Baden walked, Ame concentrated, allowing words to enter his thoughts that hadn't appeared in years. "Va... Vako... Vakama.." he finally worked out. "Vakama is the Turaga of Ta-Koro. He is wise, we should go to him. He will know what we should do." Before long, the pair came upon a path, which they followed until they reached a sign pointing them in the direction of Ta-Koro. "Won't be long now."

:OOC

Let me know if I should change any of these origin details. The Anxilia mask of Baden was approved by Ghosthands. Both Turaga Ame and Toa Baden are new characters by me. They'll be in Ta-Koro by next post and I'm open for interaction after that. If anyone wants to position themselves near the Ta-Koro gates, that'd be swell. Neither of them remember life before the cave. Their personalities haven't really changed, but Ame can sort of remember a few proper nouns if he really tries, thus his guidance towards Ta-Koro and Vakama, who I realize is dead but Ame doesn't know that yet ;)

IC:

Ame and Baden had been walking for several hours by the time the road open up to a large gate.  A Ta-Matoran guardsman stopped them.  "Halt!  What business do you have in Ta-Koro?"

Ame did the talking.  "We've been trapped in a cave out in the forest for... too long.  This world is unfamiliar, and we just want a place to stay while learn what's transpired in our absence.  Could you take us to Vakama?"

The Ta-Matoran stared blankly at the pair.  "Vakama... Our Turaga died long ago.  All of them did.  They were murdered.  Each of the Koro's are now led by an Akiri, with Jaller being the Akiri of Ta-Koro.  He's busy at the moment.  There's been a murder and some mystery here recently, otherwise I would arrange a meeting.  Wait here." The guard disappeared into a room.

"The Turaga are dead?  Perhaps you're the only one alive now, Ame.  I won't let anyone harm you, I promise."

"Thank you, Baden, but I'm sure that won't be necessary."

"Well I'll protect you, no matter what.  This world seems dangerous.  Who knows what evil lurks within it.  Look, the guard's returning."

The guard came out while he was finishing a sentence with another.  The other guard observed the Toa and Turaga before going back inside the building.  "I can spare a few minutes to lead you inside Ta-Koro.  I'll take you to one of our house-arrest holding cells.  I'm sorry, it's hardly a room to live in, but we're not exactly overflowing with criminals, so it's available, and you'll be able to stay there a few days until you figure out your next step.  After I show you your room, I'll escort you to the Wall of History.  There, you can read about everything that's transpired during your absence."

"Thank you very much, sir.  We appreciate any hospitality we shall receive."  Ame and Baden walked towards the guardsman in time to witness a bridge rising out of the lava surrounding Ta-Koro.  The pair both stared in awe as they watched each spire rise into place.  "Follow me please."  The Ta-Matoran began walking across the bridge, with Ame and Baden close behind, each noting the warmth of the stone under their ancient feet.  The journey across took barely a minute before they reached the main gate of Ta-Koro.  A few other guardsman waved the group past.  Baden and Ame both went wide-eyed as they came into Ta-Koro's plaza.  Matoran bustled all across a marketplace as wares were bought and sold.  Some workers hauled carts between the crowd and a few entertainers drew an audience on some corners.  If there truly was a murder mystery unfolding, the average citizen seemed unaffected.

The Ta-Matoran guard led the pair into the police headquarters.  The inside of this building was much quieter than the bustling market square.  The trio walked down a hall and took a turn, before the guard stopped and turned to the two.  "That's Akiri Jaller up ahead, leaned against the wall.  Don't talk to him, he's busy."  And just like that, the three walked past Jaller before turning into another hallway.  The guard walked up to a door, unlocked it, then ushered the two inside.  The room wasn't too small; it had two beds, a table, a desk, and a few thin shelves along the walls.  No rug, though, or windows, or plants or any sort of decoration save for a small crack wiggling through one wall.  "Here's where you'll stay for the time being.  Now, let me show you to the Wall of History."

Ame and Baden were led back out of the police headquarters and through the city again.  It wasn't just Ta-Matoran living here, they noticed.  There were representatives of many elements, and even some Toa walking about.  In no time at all, they reached the Wall of History.  "I'll leave you two here. Read as much as you'd like before heading back to your quarters.  Don't feel like you're in any trouble or are a burden by being here.  We're always glad to have more Toa around," he said, nodding towards Baden.  After that, the Ta-Matoran bowed and began walking back towards his post.

"Do you think Ta-Koro will ask me to do Toa-stuff for them?"  Baden was clearly nervous as he asked his question.  "If you're needed, it is your duty as a Toa to answer the call, Baden.  I'm sure you won't be needed for now, though.  We should focus on getting settled, starting with understanding everything we've missed."  And so the pair began reading the Wall of History...

Some people really are gone though, a point eloquently made by Toa Rogers back when he stilled performed at the local theater. Remember the goldfish whatever bonkle fish are called, that died? The veritable saint had used it to explain death and loss to his younger viewers in a way that didn't gloss over it with silliness or a condescending tone, but rather spoke directly to the loss and sense of loss and how it was okay to be sad, but that everything still moved on outside your transient sadness soap bubble, and sitting in it and letting the world move past you in your little nitid horizon was the real thing to worry about.

IC: If anybody expected a grappling-based joke, they would have to wait until the next season.

"Yeah, from what I can tell there's usually a lot of nonsense happening in the seedier dives around there. Might run into some trouble if that's what you're looking for." the feral-looking Toa of Magnetism agreed helpfully. Having spent the past hour with the group, that was all he really expected them to be in search of. His current superiors had both gotten into scuffles with their green one, and the Ta-Toa that seemed to be their de-facto ringleader had by all rights narrowly missed following suit.

They were gonna fight something else today.

"We rolling too, ma'am? One of us is probably gonna have to carry the pipsqueak if so." he unceremoniously indicated Elly's uncharacteristic, silent form. "Think she went into the same sugar coma their big friend fought his way out of."

"Eh, drunks are small stuff, but I'm always ready to roll." came the voice of one Le-Koroan delinquent from the far side of the table, who had miraculously never kicked his feet up onto it to complete that classic image at any point. Could a Monkey be trained? Perhaps, but smarter money would be on something along the lines of "my heels have plenty of ash on them and I eat on this table" as a line of reasoning. He never responded well to training of the manners.

Not in the least because he considered every authority figure in his life to be either heavy-handed or absolutely smothering.

And they were! Especially Wukong. Soter was a smug thorn in his side in all of their interactions, but his grudge against her didn't hold a candle to what he had nursed for years before they'd met.

He rose, sliding out when he could, and stretched his sword swinging muscles idly.

"Think we run into something more fun, Sareta?"

IC [Agni - Ta-Koro Guard HQ]:

With a final, brief nod of confirmation towards Jaller I was off, pacing out of the holding-cell area and made my way over to the morgue. Once there, I explained the situation to the examiner who led me into the morgue itself. Walking in there felt like I'd stepped into a different Koro altogether. Where the village of fire was basalt and obsidian bathed in a red glow, the chamber I found myself in was brightly lit and built from granite. It was also considerably cooler than the rest of the building.

Three granite blocks rose from the floor, their surfaces carved specifically for their purpose. Only one was in use right now. We stopped in front of the guard's body and my eyes lingered on it for a moment. The examiner took it as a cue and started to rattle off the injuries and cause of death. Truth be told I wasn't paying attention, my mind was back with Tuara in her cell. After a moment I realized he'd stopped talking and was looking at me expectantly. I thanked him and then went about the task at hand.

I put my hand on the body's wrist, took a slow breath to prepare for what I was about to see, then triggered the Kanohi's ability.

OOC: Thanks to Palm for providing background information for this post.

IC [Agni - Ta-Koro guard HQ]:

In my days with the guard, I'd seen my fair share of tragic fates. Not the slow kind, but the one that comes with the job. Also, we live in a volcano. Thanks, Vakama.

I used to wonder what the victims felt in their last moments. Were they afraid? At peace? I knew there was no single answer, but the mind cannot help but wonder sometimes. Eventually though, I learned that the truth was as it so often is, less dramatic: Most didn't see it coming.

Neither did this guard. And neither did I. Too much time had passed. If I'd been here when they found him, I could have told them everything the victim had seen, heard, felt. I couldn't read their mind, but it was the next best thing. And it was infinitely easier than doing it the old-fashioned way.

But now, things weren't so easy. As time went on, the mask could do less and less. What little visual information remained accessible, it was a blur. But the colors matched the Koro, so we weren't completely off the mark. Orange above, dark shadows where the buildings towered overhead, then a little orange again, where braziers and torches lit the streets. And dead center, a reddish blurb, bipedal. Taller than the point of view of the victim, but too slim to be a Skakdi, not tall enough for a Vortixx. So, a Toa, or similar. That much I could discern. Except it didn't do anything but confirm what we knew: Either Tuara or her brother Kitea had done in a fellow guard. And Tuara had copped to it. That didn't help.

But as fate would have it, the way the mask worked, the last sense to go over time was hearing. So while there was no clear face to put on the Toa, there was a voice. And it was one of the two voices I'd spent most of today talking to. My view of things swayed as the guard moved back and forth. So did the blurb, similar moving. Circling each other? But the orange above didn't move the right way for that. Feet crunched on gravel. So, pacing back and forth then - and talking.

...this isn't working...

                                                                                              ...we had an arrangement...

                                  ...and it's not working...

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      ...paid alot...

                                                                                                                                            ...what you're asking. Not enough...

                         ...then what...

                                                                                   ...I want out...

                                                                                                                                                                                                                           ...not so easy...

...I'm done...

These were the important bits that stood out to me. And the voice of the occupant of our holding cell. Nice to know the going rate for corrupt guards these days. A business arrangement that had gone sour. And the guard who's hand I was holding had wanted more payment. Which our perp refused. The victim then demanded an end to the arrangement, threatening to walk. That's when the blur suddenly moved, accompanied by a blade unsheathing, followed by a wet gurgle. One slash. Then my point of view changed again, as the guard fell. Just a gradient from orange to darkness at the shadows. More footsteps nearby, but now getting dimmer. Then the shadows crept in from all around, until only darkness was left and there was nothing left to witness.

I opened my eyes again, letting go of the cold wrist in my hand. The mortician looked at me expectantly. "So...?" they asked. The question hung between us for a second or two. "Thanks for your help." I said, and headed out the door.

I grabbed a notepad from the nearest desk I could find as I made my way through the headquarters, back towards the cell block. The pad in my hand began to smoke slightly, as I burned the transcript of the guard's final conversation into it. I walked briskly. By the time I returned to Jaller, the letters on the pad were still warm. As he read it, I instructed the other guards keeping watch to open the doors of both cells. I wanted them to be able to hear. Then I turned towards the one on the left and walked in. Our eyes met, and I didn't hesitate.

"I am placing you under arrest for murder, Kitea Drigton."

IC: Ame and Baden, outside the Wall of History

"So... a lot's happened," the Electric Toa surmized.  "We've been gone since time itself began, really."  He turned to look at his old friend.  "There's no place for us in this world.  Not anymore.  Truthfully, I don't recall if there ever was."

"Our memories may have faded, but that doesn't mean they never happened," Ame reassured Baden.  "We just need to find a purpose.  We need to figure out how to live in this new world."

"I'm a Toa.  I know what place I have."  Baden took a few strides forward and stared into the Ta-Koro market square.  "This Echelon guy... the guard earlier mentioned there had been a murder here.  I don't want to disturb the authorities or interrupt their work.  But this Echelon guy sounds bad enough to cause something like that."  Baden turned back towards his orange-and-white companion.  "And what happened at Ko-Koro... you read the horror stories.  They gunned down innocents who were promised safe passage!"  Sparks crackled from the Toa's clenched fist.  "I'm a Toa.  I'm supposed to fight evil, and this Echelon guy is as evil as they come.  I'm going to kill him and save the island."

"Baden! Don't be senseless!"  The Turaga hurried to Baden's side, and grabbed his fist.  "We have no idea just how terrible Echelon is!  A foe like that-"

"You think I'm not strong enough?"

"I know you aren't experienced enough.  Don't rush to your death, Baden."

The blue-and-white Toa turned again, and began walking into Ta-Koro's public square.  "Even if I die, it won't be for nothing.  I could hurt him, I could even stop him!  A Toa's duty is to protect the innocent.  It seems there's a been a shortage of that recently.  I need to do this."

"And you're the one who will fix that?" The Turaga followed next to the Toa as they began descending one Ta-Koro avenue.  "This is too sudden, Baden!  You're going to be overwhelmed and killed!  We don't even know if this Echelon guy is still down there!  For all we know, something worse could've shown up and killed him!  This Makuta could even have faked his death and is down there plotting his revenge!  Or maybe it's just an empty cave down there!  You might survive long enough to witness how pointless this whole endeavor is, but then get lost in that labyrinth and still never make it out!  Please, Baden, listen to me when I say you should not go looking for trouble at Kini-Nui!"

"A Toa should seek out evil, rather than wait for evil to make itself known.  Whatever I find, I'll deal with it.  Besides, no one knew we even existed, so no one will even notice my death."

"Except me, who will be left alone in this world."

The pair walked in silence for a minute.  As they passed a bar, the Turaga spoke again.  "Baden, if you're this sure of yourself, I can't stop you, but come with me for a minute.  Let's sit and share a drink.  A little refreshment before the road to Kini-Nui."  There was a sadness in his voice, and a tone of desperation.

Baden sighed, and stopped.  "Okay, Ame.  We'll share a drink, for your sake."

The pair entered the bar, which seemed a little rustic.  They picked a table by the door, and Ame went to the bar for drinks.  As it turns out, hibernating in a cave for unknown centuries doesn't build any good credit to open a tab on.  Ame grabbed two waters instead. On his return to the table, he noticed a group of people at the farther, shadier part of the establishment.  "Ignore them, Baden.  They seem like the sort of crowd best avoided," he said as he placed the glasses on the table.

The two sat quietly until their drinks were as half empty as their hopes.  "You're really going to go down through Kini-Nui?"

"It's better than just sitting around in town.  When I come back, perhaps we can collect a reward that'll help us get our own place.  Maybe we could find some steady work, even."

"That would be nice.  We could have our own hole in the wall."

"I'm going to be back, Ame.  I won't leave you alone in this world."

"And what if you do?  How am I to live if I lose my only friend?"

"You'll live."  Baden took a long draw of his water.  "You'll find new friends.  You'll find a place to rest your head and kick up your feet.  I know you're going to make it, Ame.  We survived that cave, we can survive boring life in town."

"I know you'll make it too!  I'll ask a final time: please don't go down Kini-Nui.  You can have all of that life too!  You have the whole world ahead of you, please don't throw your life away over a hunch that there may be some bad guy who you may be able to defeat."  Ame let his hand rest over Baden's.

"I've made up my mind, Ame."  Baden finished his water and stood up.  "When I return from the caves and tunnels, will I see your smiling face?  Or will I have only the clouds and the birds to watch for?"

"You'll not only see me, but I'll give you the greatest hug there ever was."  As Ame stood, members of that aforementioned crowd began to make their way out of the bar.  "Let them pass," he warned Baden.  They waited for them to leave the bar before they themselves exited.

OOC: Interacting with Razgriz and Krayzikk's group if ya'll want.  Otherwise, in your next posts just acknowledge The Toa of Lightning and Turaga of Plasma walking past you, and Baden and Ame will zoom over to Kini-Nui.

"Sure we could find somethin' more fun."

The Ta-Toa answered absently, staring at a strange duo that also inhabited the restaurant. Unlike her electrically oriented pal, she hadn't eaten so much she felt sluggish. And she'd been waiting eagerly for everyone to hurry up and get up, shifting impatiently from foot to foot. In lieu of anything else to look at, the Toa and Turaga had been a... Strange sight. And even stranger conversation to overhear bits and snippets of.

All kinds, she supposed?

"Come on, come on, let's go! Red if we don't move soon I'm gonna make you carry me so I can nap. Tor, get your fat butt up and going!"

IC:

Does she wanna nap? She just got up, I thought...

Wait, of course she must have just gotten up. They'd all crashed at the same place and left together. Duh, Red. Clearly the mental anguish of falling in glorious gastrointestinal combat to anyone, even boss Saeva Sareta, was weighing on him; the added stress of being forced to watch Saeva haphazardly toss her own widgets on the table was an added failure, and he would have spilled his own guts with a saperka if it didn't mean drowning the place in waffles and beer.

"Yup. Sure thing, Saeva."

He flung the Toa of Fire over a shoulder so she could nap.

"Hey, Erzu, you need a lift? You don't look that heavy--" He stopped and tilted his head slightly. "Have you lost weight since I watched you guys at the Crucible, E? You doing okay?"

I thought he was a heavyweight...

IC: "I'm good, man. Always looked like this." Monkey saw, and monkey did, quirking his head at a similar quizzical angle to his gigantic compatriot, as though a funhouse mirror. "Least I think I did. Haven't felt any hungrier, that's for sure."

Forget Erzu, he knew he was resilient with sweets—was Red okay?

I dunno if he's all there just yet.

IC: This could take a while.

Where was all that energy you had no more than an hour ago, sending me off on a snipe hunt?

He busied himself with waving a hand in front of Elly's eyes, idly regarding her with the same mild confusion that one might a stopped alarm clock.

IC:

Wait no Red it was-

"Oof."

Big Onu-Toa shoulder hitting her sternum killed the rest of that thought, sending it out with the air exiting her lungs. The big guy meant well but he wasn't always bright. She kicked her feet a little, something that bothered Redhot very little, and pulled herself higher to sit more comfortably on his shoulder rather than drape like a sack of Saeva. His head made for an easy arm rest, too.

"Hyperbole, Red, I was exaggeratin' how low they were going. I'm all good."

"I am placing you under arrest for murder, Kitea Drigton."

IC: Tuara Drigton - Ta-Koro Guard HQ

Tuara had been staring at the wall for what felt like days. She knew it had only been hours. She thought it could have been a few hours. It could have been minutes. However long it was, it was long enough for her thoughts to fully set in. She was a stew of emotions in a stone room, brewing hotter and hotter. She looked down at her sweaty glistening palms and curled them up into fists. These hands were the force of the law once. The very hands which struck down villains. The same hands to fill her glass. The same hands to pull Dorian close. To push him away. To push everyone away. To strike the piano in anger. To slam the door hard enough it would be torn from its hinges. To smash the bottles against the wall. To-

Tuara slammed her fists against the table.

Here she was, once the deputy of Ta-Koro's guard, sitting with hand-cuffs and a stone mask in an interrogation room. Right now, Agni was probably at the scene of the crime, Jaller off speaking sadly with any number of officials or old friends, and Dorian was... gone.

'You earned a long, happy life, Tuara Drigton. Live it right, every single day that you can. Cause you really blow at trying to live mine.'

She should be out there with him right now, off doing... whatever he was doing now. it. It didn't matter. He could be descending into karzahni right now.

Tuara slammed her fists against the table again, her vision beginning to blur, obscured by sober tears. She reached her hands up to strike the table once more, but the chains kept her wrists anchored. She struggled against them, letting out a choking sound as she began to cry. She struck the table again. And again.

'
You earned a long, happy life, Tuara Drigton...'

Again.

'...Live it right, every single day that you can...'

Again.

'...Cause you really blow at trying to live mine...'

This time the blood from the handcuffs splattered across the table.

Tuara stood up, and brought her fists up and down. She pulled against the cuffs, tearing away at more skin, the tears fully flowing, completely obscuring her vision. She couldn't contain it any longer. The heat of the room had risen dramatically, and the wellspring of fury and pain and shame began to overflow. An entire lifetime of hurt and grief came to the forefront, a dark and angry molten core bubbling to the surface, tearing the ground asunder, about to burst. Tuara exploded.

A fury she had never known before was unleashed on this table. If only she could break it in two, run after Dorian, tell him not to go. Make him stay. Beg him to let her go with her. She could fix it all. If only she could break these chains. Tuara placed a foot against the table and pushed hard. The poor table creaked, trying to keep her hands in place. Tuara could feel the table about to give way, to release her. But just as the force was at its apex, something else gave. She let out a howl of pain as her wrist snapped.

It was hardly a moment before she began the punishment again.

Kitea made no betrayal of his inner thoughts at Agni's entrance. He stated calmly, "So be it."

IC: "How's the view up there? Find Torana's willpower yet?"

In a dazzling feat of self-control, all he really did in response to Saeva's unceremonious hauling upon to the shoulder was snort at the relative absurdity of the image. Everyone was honestly just too full to be really combative— rematches could wait until everything was good and processed.

IC [Agni - Ta-Koro Guard HQ]:

My eyes lingered on his face a moment longer. No visible remorse. "I thought she hit rock bottom - but then you showed up." I scoffed, turned around and approached Jaller. I handed him the transcript of the late guard's final conversation. "It's conclusive. It's all there." I simply stated. I was done here. The Akiri nodded. At least we had clarity now. He'd handle the rest.

I was just about to step outside, when I paused once more at the cell door,  not looking back at it's occupant. "She was better off with Shaddix than with you."

The door was shut behind me by one of the guards, leaving me alone in the corridor. And that's when I heard the pounding from the other cell. I knew Tuara wouldn't take it well. But the heavy thud and cry of pain that followed got me alert. The door was still ajar so I got a move on.

"Hey - " I entered the room, but the words got stuck in my throat at the sight of the marks on the walls and table, the bruises and the obviously broken wrist. I didn't even feel myself move, just knew the next moment I held her - more a long overdue hug for an old friend, rather than restraining a suspect - to keep her from injuring herself further.

I didn't know what else to say, and much less how she would react. I braced myself for anything, from reconnecting with an estranged sister-in-arms to getting headbutted.

IC:

"Nope! Still missing. Wake up, Tor."

IC:

"We were coming to let you out. This... This is just crazy."

The Akiri's tone walked a fine line between concern and anger, never fully falling to either one but veering between them with every word. The key dangled from a finger on his left hand, and the pad Agni had handed them was held in his right. His face, on the other hand, definitely spoke of frustration; it all but screamed it. Wrinkles started to appear in the paper with his tightening grip. Jaller rapped sharply on the door frame, and muttered for the guard who stepped into the door to find a medic. Someone with a Mask of Healing. Whichever he found first.

"What the Karzi, Drigton?" It was definitely anger, now. "What, you think the metal's going to break before bone? You know how many times you watched a routine like this? I can't keep track, can you Agni? Is breaking out going to change what Kitea did? Really, I'd like to know what the Karz is going through your head. Do you think we're going to kill him? He deserves it, but no, that's what what we do. You know that. He's not going anywhere, Drigton. He might even have visiting hours. So what's the plan here."

The Ta-Matoran paced angrily, face slowly morphing into a scowl.

"Vakama could come in here and get you to figure things out yourself. I never got it. Maybe you did, Agni, but I never got it. How he did it. But it was important to him. So I've tried really hard to do things his way, to be patient, to be unerringly karzing kind. And look where it's gotten us. Being your friend didn't work, you showed that all by yourself. Maybe Agni has a better idea, but I don't." The Ta-Matoran pulled the chair opposite Tuara out roughly. "There's still a Guard in there somewhere, Drigton, so if you want listen to your friend you're going to listen to your CO."

Jaller sat down hard and dropped the key on the table between them.

"I can patch you up fine, now. And I'll do it every time until you finally do something we can't fix, and I don't think that's far off. I've seen it happen to people weaker than you. But right now, you're in my building. In my village. And you're not going anywhere until I believe you're not going to be that rash." The voice that came out now was low and brooked no argument, familiar to anyone who had ever passed through Guard training in any village. It was drilled over, and over, and over until the sound could make you stop and listen no matter what was going on. It was something every officer would respond to until the day they died, like it was etched into their very being. It was the last thing he could try to get through to her.

"So unless Agni's going to drag me out of office, you're not going anywhere until I get a satisfactory answer. I discharged a Guard this year for daring to disrespect me, disrespect you, and disrespect the Guard you and I both have worked our butts off to build. I let you back in, no questions asked, and you threw it in my face. I came here as a friend, and you threw it in my face. You threw it in Agni's face, you threw it in Angel's face, you threw it in Shaddix's face, and every Guard who has ever respected you."

His voice softened, a little.

"We're all trying to help you. Why won't you let us?"

IC: Tuara Drigton - Ta-Koro Guard HQ

Tuara felt Agni wrap his arms around her, squeezing firmly. At first, she struggled against him, yelling incomprehensibly, kicking her legs and twisting her shoulders. But de-maske
d, even someone as strong as Tuara could not free herself. However, as helpless as she was, Tuara continued to struggle throughout Jaller's speech. It wasn't until the end that she finally stopped, breathing heavily, completely exhausted by her outburst. The pain from her broken wrist was slowly setting in.

"We're all trying to help you. Why won't you let us?"

Tuara hung her head low, watching the last of her tears fall. "Maybe I don't want your help." She looked up at Jaller. "Maybe I'm not worth it. Maybe I was supposed to be buried with my family. Maybe I should have died when the Rahkshi attacked, or when the Mark Bearers..." she trailed off, unable to say it. "And I know I'm wrong. I know I'm supposed to throw myself into your arms. I know I'm supposed to get better. I know I'm supposed to stop drinking." Tuara looked away in shame, "But I also knew I should have stayed with Joske and Angel on their mission. I knew I should have stayed in the Guard. I knew I should have never left Dorian alone. And I knew I should have never tried to leave Ta-Koro with Kitea."

She grit her teeth, "But we all know what I did instead, don't we?" Tuara felt her fists clench again. Her voice began to raise, and she felt Agni gently tighten his hold. "It doesn't seem to matter what I know! Look at me!" She looked down at her hands, covered in blood and tears. "I'd rather destroy myself."

"So unless you want to get caught in the way too, maybe it's best you all forget me."

IC:

"You don't get to make that call. I don't even get to make that call. You have friends, and they don't stop caring because you do something stupid." The Ta-Matoran spun the key idly around a finger and pinched the bridge of his nose, thinking. "You think that Mata Nui's grand plan is going to get messed up by a couple of Ta-Koro Guardsmen? If you were supposed to be in the ground, you would be. Awful spiteful to try and put yourself there anyway."

"But people screw up. You screwed up, big time. You can't fix it if you're dead." Jaller gestured to Agni. "He won't let you do anything that stupid, either."

"You feel ashamed. Can't convince you not to, so make up for it. Pulling yourself together is gonna be the hardest thing you've ever had to do. Do it anyway."

His mouth quirked a little.

"And no, Agni's arms will do just fine. You can hate me, if you'd like."

IC [Agni - Ta-Koro Guard HQ]:

There was a lot I wanted to say, thoughts that wanted to get out. But the lump in my throat prevented that and I could feel something hot well up around my eyes as I just stood there, providing what comfort I could while listening to Jaller's attempts to get through and Tuara's gut punch of a reply.

"So unless you want to get caught in the way too, maybe it's best you all forget me."

I thought of Valria, Dorian, Utu and others. I'd seen where this path could lead too many times, how few made it through to the other side. And now Tuara.

"No."

I didn't even know how I got the words out. I held her a little tighter, side of her head pressing against my cheek, lips near her ear.

"I refuse to give up on any more good people."

IC: Tuara Drigton - Ta-Koro Guard HQ

Good people.

Tuara was still for a long moment, listening to her own labored breathing and the flickering torches on the wall. With tear-stained cheeks she looked up at Jaller once more, resigned to his words and to Agni's embrace. There was a cold calmness emanating from her person now - the shock of a snapped wrist finally settling in. Tuara spoke in a small voice, one neither men in the room were particularly familiar with. "What can I do?" She looked about ready to crumple, and she felt herself reach up to Agni's forearms and return the hug as best as the cuffs and the pain would allow. Her face began to break again, as the tears started once more. Tuara asked a second time, "What can I do?"

Good people.

IC [Agni - Ta-Koro Guard HQ]:

When she reached out to return the embrace, the tightness around my chest actually let up a bit - I could breathe easier again. Wasn't sure if we'd gotten through to her, but if she was done breaking her own bones for now, it was a small start.

"Well...first," I began, right hand softly patting her back. I looked at her, blinking my own tears away. Carefully, I reached past her sides to undo the shackles, without further hurting her wrist. "Let's get that looked at, hm?"

IC: Sparky

Forehead firmly planted on the table, arms splayed out across its surface, Tor groaned as Saeva's urging bored into her semi-conscious mind, which barely registered the faint smell of yet more frying batter, the awful churning in her stomach, and the sizable currents of air displaced by the movements of Red's jaw. It took her a moment to realize that she was not, in fact, back in a Le-Koronan cell that had uncharacteristically begun softly playing jazzy diner music from somewhere in the back next to the dead rats the night guard was eyeing as a suitable replacement for-

Oh yeah no this is much more compromising, she thought as she raised her sticky face from some new-age modern art interpretation of the Shroud of Turin made exclusively of cloth napkins and semi-dried syrup, and spotted one Saeva Sareta draped lazily over the finely marbled slab of beef of a shoulder attached to one Redhot Bomaye.

"I'm good, I'm awake, let's go..." she muttered, adjusting her slightly-crooked mask. "We paid...?"

I just nodded in response, with the best it's alright look I could muster. I knew I could be abrasive - things I said often were harsh - sometimes unintentionally so. So I didn't quite trust my words. So instead, I took off my scarf and fashioned it into a sling.

"Here." I said as I showed it to her, indicating for her to shift a bit in her seat so I could put it on. It would do, until we could get her to a healer.

IC: Tuara Drigton - Ta-Koro Guard HQ

Tuara was uncharacteristically resigned. She moved over in her chair and held up her arm for Agni to wrap it. She looked at both her friends. First to Agni, gingerly placing her wrist in the sling, then to Jaller, sitting across from her stoically. With her other arm she wiped the tears away from her face. "I can't do this anymore. If I keep going I-" She shook her head, biting down on her lip, fighting off further tears. "I need help."

IC [Agni - Ta-Koro Guard HQ]:

"Alright. How about we start by getting out of this cell, hm?" I asked, looking briefly at Jaller, shooting him a work with me here look. In my experience neither of us were exactly known for being overly sensitive in how we dealt with others. The last thing I wanted to do right now was the usual guard-routine of dictating to someone in custody what they should or shouldn't be doing. Not that Tuara was in custody anymore, as far as I was concerned. And holding cells were not designed to engender good feelings - quite the opposite, in fact. So I wanted to get her out of the headquarters as soon as possible.

But it was her life we were going to get back on track, and call me crazy,  but I figured she had some agency in that. So I'd stick with making suggestions - but the final okay was hers.

"We can stop by the healers, get your wrist treated properly and then find someplace nicer. What do you think?"

"Alright, that works." He grinned in a manner most simian. "Now if we can get you in the door, we can surely get you an' them out the door— we decided on barfight near the center of town, yeah? And hope we run into something weird on the way."

He honestly did miss the Crucible in times like these— if you were ever feeling down, wayward, or just needed some fun #### to do, it was your one stop shop for booze, bets, and brawls. It was a constant in their lives for years, a nursery ground for young thugs and young vigilantes to come an prove their mettle until they'd blossomed into who they were today.

But, karz. You can't be in the nest forever, right?

The unknown had a dash of adventure to it, even if it just turned into another inevitable scuffle. It was an untrodden path, where life was free to throw whatever it could at you and you had to roll with it, you had to learn from it. You had to get better to survive it all.

Stuff like that was where a man truly grew.

IC:

Tor squealed briefly in shock as Red easily hefted the whole of her glutted body up in a single motion, a seemingly impossible task by any standard, but then again Red appeared to have been sculpted from the gods' clay and injected full of capsaicin so all bets were off.

Regaining her balance and ensuring that she was righted, the sluggish Vo-Toa turned to her fiery companion, now (physically) at the same level.

"Hey, Saeva."
