IC: Korzaa

Korzaa followed her captor out the door, into the bustling village of Ta-Koro.

It’d been ages since she’d left Ko-Koro. She could barely remember the last time she’d been somewhere that wasn’t covered in snow and ice. Korzaa was not someone who traveled, too busy at home to spend time afar. But here she was, her village destroyed, in the midst of Ta-Koro, in disguise, placing her trust in the man who had kidnapped her. She could never have predicted this the morning before the attack.

Ta-Koro was different that she remembered, but again, it had been a long time. The air burned her lungs worse than she recalled, every breath feeling like she was too close to a campfire. The heat was more than she remembered too. Her armor warmed immediately, beginning to cook her, causing her to sweat profusely. The village was dark too, and the dissipated smoke of hundreds of fires stung her eyes. Waves of uncomfortable heat from the Mangaia seemed to pulse through the entire Koro.

This was why she didn’t travel.

The throngs of Matoran payed the two no mind as they passed through the busy crowds of black, red, and orange colored villagers. Korzaa, hidden well in her oversized cloak, scanned them for danger, her natural impulses keeping her on alert and on edge. In this foreign land, in a situation she had hardly imagined could be possible, she couldn’t help the vigilance. She walked in silence.

IC Sanguivox:

Sanguivox stood next in the queue to cross the bridge, awaiting the detective's call to come over. He remembered his Toa days, when he could have harnessed the power of his Calix and leaped across the pillars to the other side. He marveled with the rest of the questers at the beauty of the lava tunnels and their secrets. If multiple Matoran hadn't gone missing down here, he might have made a small summer home down here!

IC: (Kino Iho)

I was making my way to the Lavapool, weaving through the throng of matoran, Toa, and other species in the Ta-Koro Marketplace. Growing up in a humid environment like the Kumu Islets, the dry heat of the volcano was actually more comfortable than back home. Ta-Koro was a city of industry, of forges and choking black smoke. The marketplace was like any other, granted Ga being a coastal city had us beat in sheer variety, Onu-Koro was the other big marketplace, the biggest. Basically if things didn't go through Onu, they would go through Ga. Ta-Koro was a forge city, a city of creators. It felt good being a part of that, protecting that. I moved through the market slowly, easing my way around people. I needed to gather more knowledge about these "Piraka" and see what damage they had wrought upon us. I needed to know how bad the threat was, a solid understanding of my enemy.

I had a good thing here, good people, and to be honest it was the longest time since I had done some good. Most of my life had be a lot of bad, a lot of rotten things to atone for. Lot of mistakes that were made, things that still hang around my neck like a millstone, dragging me down. Here, in Ta-Koro, I could make up for that.

IC: Pae

The pair moved through the city, Pae feeling somewhat exposed without his cloak. Luckily, they weren't getting many looks.

Pae silently fretted anyways. He would've taken to the alleyways if he didn't have Korzaa with him - still a bit weak from Jin's shockers no doubt. Yet she walked alongside him, wrapped in a warm cloak. She must be tired. Pae glanced back to see her face half obscured under his hood.

She was watching the surrounding people intently, just like he.

Pae returned to his own watching.

As a child, growing up without protectors made life difficult and forced Pae to fend for himself. The world went wrong the moment he took his first step, slipping out of what could have been sturdy footing to something far more dangerous. He did this by predicting small events before they could occur. It made stealing food or clothes efficient. It also made defending himself much more manageable. It was a defense mechanism, born of fear. And there was plenty to be afraid of. He was good at it, but it never soothed him. Even if he could turn the clockwork in his mind off, he'd never stop fearing in his soul for his safety. He hid this well.

So out of fear, Pae's eyes skittered to and fro, compiling as much information for his mind to process at once. From person to person his gaze darted, counting knives and other weapons or finding purses and estimating wealth.

Pae was reminded quickly just how blissfully unaware these people were of the scope of the danger that would soon befall them. Ko-Koro was swiftly destroyed, and chances are that Echelon was marching out any that opposed the power of his church to be killed in the streets just like Korzaa - had she not been stolen from the village.

This could be the next Ko-Koro, taken by force to be used as a weapon against the rest of the world. This could be the next Xa-Koro, wiped from history in a manner of minutes to be sunk beneath sight and lost forever. This could even be the next Pala-Koro, walls destroyed with the flip of a switch. The inhabitants were killed ruthlessly and without reason there. It was a power move by the whim of Heuani and his master Makuta. So much death, so much conflict, and so much reason to be afraid.

They could have been followed. No matter how well he covered his tracks, they could have been followed. He could die here. Or anywhere for that matter. Korzaa too, nobody was exempt.

Not even Kino.

He felt his mind start to drift, wondering again - how could Vera Polzin lie (and lie so truthfully) about Kino's recommending him. He had so many questions, and not once in his life did he have the time to stop and ask them. It was anxiety inducing to say the least, never was there closure, and never was there a moment of rest.

Something caught him off guard. In the crowd, a face turned into view. A face few could forget, and even fewer given the chance to recognize.

Pae felt himself falter for just a moment. With the rhythm of his step stopping by half a second, he turned, craning to catch a glimpse of the grey eyes hidden amongst fools. There she was.

Pae for the first time in years, let himself slip by speaking without concern, "Kino."

He froze, as if the village of Ko, Xa, Pala, Ta-Koro would freeze with him.

With a glance to Korzaa, Pae communicated simply to be followed.

He pressed through the crowd, squeezing between the residents and market-goers. He felt his heart-rate increase as he took deeper breaths, focusing on the spot where she once was. Finally, in a great heave of relief, Pae emerged from the masses and stepped forward.

"Kino."

The world became calm, and for a split second Pae felt the simplest moment of rest as Kino Iho's eyes met his.

"Alright, so this is...six months or so before Xa-Koro fell. Ostensibly, we'd arrived to be the long arm of the law while Aurelia cleaned the city up. But I was a fixer, never a cleaner. I got paid to seduce variables, and erase them if they couldn't be seduced. By the time we'd arrived on the island, over half the team was in my pocket. That was when I got named deputy...and why I got these." I waved my three Protosteel fingertips and crushed the burned out cigarette in my mouth between index and middle finger. "So what does a walking time bomb of charisma and killer impulse do while everyone else is growing community gardens? They sent me to bust up the racketeering outfits. First place we hit was this casino, the...the..."

Something problem. The Nikarra Problem. The Final Nikarra. The Marks. Kiss it for luck.

"...Final Problem. The casino," I finished. "Family outfit, run by this guy Rickshaw. 'Bout as fruity as the community gardens, so he was my first target. But Grokk and I weren't even in the building when we found out that he had a cousin. A female cousin, who liked music, booze, and had a distinct lack of interest in guys. But I wasn't deterred. Gave her a fake name, a fake Guard badge, then a real name, and by that point she was mine. Wound up a Mark Bearer later. Nikki, she...when I think about it now, about all the people I killed, about how I was in the dark so long about what was happening in Xa-Koro, even about Vakama...what does it say about me that the worst things I ever did were to one girl?"

The group made slow (but, thankfully, uneventful) progress across the bridges. Here and there, they found that the path branched out to two or sometimes three different pillars before converging again further up, which sped things up a little as people spread out across the multiple routes.

The air, already stifling where they had entered, got gradually hotter and dryer as they continued. The cavern walls and ceiling gradually sloped inwards the further they got upriver, so by now the space around them was just under three-quarters what it had been before.

Miya, ever-enthusiastic, hopped onto the next bridge. She was too busy drawing to notice that the pillar at the end of it was particularly thin and fragile-looking.

Far below, the lava around the foot of the pillar suddenly began to shift and swirl, as though something was moving beneath the surface. The loud sound of cracking stone echoed through the cavern, and thin pillar swayed, broken at its base. The only thing keeping it upright was the two bridges connected to it, and the shrieks of their metal supports said they wouldn't be doing so for long.

The supports snapped. Miya screamed. It was only Teide's swift response, grabbing the girl by the shoulders and pulling her to safety, that saved her from joining the bridge as it plunged into the molten rock below.

Everyone was safe, but they now had a problem.

"How the karz are we going to get across?" Loraan asked grimly.

"...what does it say about me that the worst things I ever did were to one girl?"

Oh.

So he's treading into that kind of territory.

I wonder if I can put my comforting face on.

As each syllable poured out of Dorian's mouth, a tiny knot formed itself within Flay's mind. To her, she had zero experience with any of this comforty-sadness stuff. Nada. She was a guardsman - but she guarded people from the dangers that mean to do harm to the body. Not the insecurities and fears the body itself produces illogically. The closest thing she might've had with trying to console others was basically the events after the Lavapool Inn's bombing; getting all the injured to treatment and giving all the people who had basically been robbed of a home to sleep.

And that was nothing close to consoling a...friend?

Enemy?

What was Dorian to her?

Eyes gazing at the ground beneath her, Flay thought about that for a second - and gave up before her emotions started getting out of whack. There was talking to be done, after all, and this was Dorian conversing with her.

"Well, you're not exactly defined just by the things you do to a specific person, are you. There's a big picture to be seen, and that picture's still being drawn."

....Was that okay or is he gonna call me out for being cheesy?

IC: Corex (Mangaia Catacombs)

The bridge was out!

Our goal was further along the shrinking tunnel!

We had to cross it somehow!

With a problem to focus on, I was happy to get to work. Looking around at the group, I tried to get a sense of what he had at our disposal.

A clear majority of the expedition were Matoran, and those with powers I did notice couldn't fill the need for a bridge, at least not immediately.

"A Toa of Air would be very helpful at this point!" Sanguivox remarked for all the group to hear.

The Turaga was right, at least somewhat. That would depend on how skilled said Toa of Air was, and we only had one of them...

A problem like this could only be solved by teamwork, so I would have to rely on my completely unknown fellow expedition members if I wanted to cross the lava flow... it wasn't a very pleasant thought, but it was nevertheless the truth. The truth truly does hurt sometimes.

Alright, enough moping, back to work!

"If we can't make a new bridge out of nothing, we'll have to take what's at hand" I began, thinking as I went.

"Two Toa of Fire, that should do"

"What if we break down one of the earlier bridges and use it to repair this one?"

"Perfect" Tharros nodded

Without wasting time he thrust his already glowing sword and plunged it into the wall.

Slicing through the edges like a hot knife through butter, he removed a hefty chunk of rock. Utilizing his Pikari his lifted the boulder over to the edge of the cliff, melting the border that seperated the two bodies of rock

He took no joy in working alongside water, but his duty took precidence over pride

IC MIRIN: Mirin took great pride in her control of her element. At the Ta-toa's word, she drew a small amount of moisture from the air. There wasn't much, but it was a start. Reaching within, she added her own energy to the small droplets, then pushed outward in a stream of the purest element. She directed it at the joint where the stone still glowed a red ember, cooling and sealing it to form a new bridge.

IC Drararius:

Observing the work of the two Toa, Drararius decided it was time that he spoke up.

"How will we return? We are simply transferring the substance of one bridge to fill the gap.

"The method we are using right now, although effective, is time-consuming, and will require these Toa to expend some of their elemental energies. There is no guarantee that they will have enough power for this by the time we come back. And suppose that we are being chased. How will we all get across if we need to wait for the bridge to be reassembled?

"If we are to be prudent, let's decide on a way to cross that would be quick and not taxing on anyone's powers."

I was flat on my butt, looking a bit dazed as some Ga-Toa chick was apologizing for some dude that had apparently just ran me over.

Except said dude was nowhere to be found, the ###### had run off! "Where is he!? I'll kick his ###### and then I'll-" I got a better look at the Ga-Toa, she was kind of hot.

"Uhhh...so where'd this Aeolus guy disappear too? Least he could do is apologize." I mean really, getting a nice girl to do it for him, the nerve.
