IC: Pae - Ta-Koro

Pae nodded to his companions before turning around and walking towards the village gates.

He could make it there on his own before nightfall, but with Jin and Nika, using the Kakama wouldn't create an ideal situation. Not to mention, he was exhausted from all his work that day and he suspected something similar from the others.

Upon leaving the village and crossing the bridge over the lava-flow, Pae kept close to his team-mates and waited before they found the trail and began walking. Upon reaching the beaten path he glanced to his side and looked to his companions, "I approve of you both," he said, finally deciding what to think of the other two, "Very competent."

Pae turned ahead again, "I had strong doubts. I avoid others in my work."

IC: Nika / Ta-Wahi Path

"Good policy," the Vortixx said, pulling his hood back with a free hand. Trust Pae's words? he wondered. Jin has secrets, connections to the case she won't talk about. Trustworthiness debatable for her. Pae is unknown. Gave us contact in Guard, but we did not enter the Headquarters with him. Gives us stamp of approval verbally, but is a man who seldom speaks. Must be significant; for good reasons, or ill?

"Never know who one can trust."

A cigarette is gripped between the fingers of his other hand, drifting lazily next to his leg. Whatever case may be, give them no reason to doubt your trust.

"Glad to hear that you find us acceptable, however."

IC Yasurek- Ta-wahi bay:

Yasurek was relieved to see Lohkar by one of the wrecks. He had half-expected the captain to have attracted the attention of an angry sea monster. As Lohkar beckoned him and Gunner over to his position, Yasurek's thoughts turned to the wreck the captain was examining. What could Lohkar have noticed about this wreck compared to the other ones?

IC: Jakawa and Mupo (Ta-Wahi Bay)

"Look! Fellow shipwreckies!"

Turning my head, I realize what the Karzahni Mupo is talking about (At least this time). A shipwrecked boat with a Lesterin of Water (Lohkar), Toa of Air (Gunner) and Matoran of Ice (Yasurek) surveying the remains.

"I'm not sure "shipwreckies" is the correct term, but whatever."

We start walking towards them.

OOC. Skipping Drae and Mariko ahead in time to catch up with the rest of the plot and make up for lost time.

IC (Mariko):

With no more clues to be found, the two Toa had abandoned the search for the killer of the Matoran and given an anonymous tip to the authorities, so that somebody would come by and lay the dead to rest properly. With that done, that investigation had officially ended and after a few hours of wandering the ash- and dust-covered streets aimlessly, quietly discussing the options for their next move, the two Toa decided to refocus their efforts on tracking down Kohra directly. Somebody like her had to leave a trail. If not one of direct clues, at least patterns would emerge if they kept their eyes open.

But even after splitting up to cover more ground, weeks of excursions, questions and cross-referencing what they knew already revealed little. The trail had gone completely cold. How cold?

Ice cold.

A fact they only learned after well over a month had passed. News from the west reached Ta-Koro of the fall of Ko-Koro and that the Vortixx who had given them the slip for so long had been one of the attackers that had brought it about. Now they needed to decide what to do with the information. To that end, the two Toa were sitting in the Magma Lounge at a table with a map of the island spread out on top of it, drinks in front of them and the basic framework for future plans forming in their minds.

"The village of ice has become a refuge for dark creatures." Mariko said, stating the obvious as he was thinking out loud. "Echelon chose a place he can defend effectively. Any direct assault would be a massacre, any covert operation a death sentence if uncovered."

"What do you think, Drae?"

We start walking towards them.

OOC: Interacting with Lohkar, Gunner and Yasurek.

OOC: They're underwater. :P

IC (Lohkar)

Lohkar indicated the gun-hatch he'd been examining. It looked as though this ship's complement of heavy disk launchers was still mostly intact. He then pointed upwards, back towards the surface, before kicking off in the same direction.

IC: Gunner / Ta-Wahi Bay

I felt a weight lift off my chest when Lohkar started swimming for the surface; I mean, I don't like feeding into elemental stereotypes or anything, but, uh ... I suppose you could say that bein' underwater weren't the best thing I could be doing with my day. Not exactly a favourite past-time o' mine, y'hear? Given my lifetime o' luck, I'd say that being in the water for any significant length was pretty likely to end in one of my mates drowning in me drowning. I know we'd all hate to see a Gunner whose was too full of water to talk anymore, now wouldn't we?

...

...

...

I'll take that silence as a yes.

So, yeah, I figured that the captain was out to discuss things on the surface, so I glanced over at Yasu and gave him a shrug, then swam up in Lohkar's wake. Long arms like mine, didn't take long before I breached the surface and was back with my old pal, Mr. Fresh Air.

Now, let's see what ol' Lohki's got planned....

IC Yasurek-Ta-wahi bay-soon to be not underwater:

Yasurek was quite relieved to see that the wrecked ship's weapons were still intact. He wasn't sure how to get them to the 'Vika, but that was probably what Lohkar wanted to talk about. He followed the others back to the surface.

IC:

"With what? 'Hey Cap, Ko-Koro fell, Joske told me how, but he also made me swear not to tell you unless you and I were up for bringing down another thousand years of primordial darkness onto our heads?'"

Angelus stood up and walked over to the single window of his office, reaching up to wrap his fingertips around the curtain rod and staring out at the village he had made his home sullenly.

"Jolek, you go to the Akiri. Escort Captain Korzaa. At least the news we have to bring him will be semi-decent." He turned halfway as he gave the order, with a stony nod to his partner. "Kino, stay. We have to talk now. Before things snowball further."

-Tyler

IC: (Kino)

I waited for Jolek and Korzaa to leave before I spoke. I was trying to avoid this, part of me wanted to rage at Pae, that the moment he came back into my life, this new me was the best thing that ever happened to me. That wasn't fair though, I could never blame Pae for anything. Whatever he did, he did because he believed in me. He was my best friend, and he had watched out for me for so long, heck it even seemed like it now, he brought Korzaa, rescued her from Ko-Koro to help the island. That night out with Angelus, I had no idea they would attack, I had no idea, that I would be the problem in Angelus' way, and even though I tried my best, I still seemed to caused as much trouble as I would have if I was the enemy, maybe I still was.

"I don't know really where to start, so how about the beginning. That's as best of a place as any, I guess," I sighed, he didn't look at me, I'd understand lies I told, people I tortured and killed. Groups I had helped to topple, and that blood, those sins were on my hands just as any other. For that matter any blood on Pae's hands with the Followers, I shared in that blood, in those crimes.

"My name is Kino Iho, and I was born in Xa-Koro. My father was Taric Iho, and my mother was Melria. I had a big brother named Valin. We were a good family, well initially, you see, there was something wrong with mother though. She got angry and aggressive with my father, problem was he was bit too much of a nice guy, so in her drunken stupors she'd lash out, and Dad, Dad never fought back. You see he was convinced she was going through a rough period, and he did his best to try and turn her away from the bottle, but she'd relapse, again, and again, and again. Each time worse than the last, one day Dad took Valin and I had with him to work. We came home to see our house burning, my mother had died inside, and when she died, something in Dad died too, so we moved out to the west side of city. Things were rougher there, crime ran rampant as it always did. So father set up a new shop, and while I was sad that I lost Mom, I was more sad how it affected Dad."

I paused, I didn't want to bring all of this up. I didn't want to lay these things bare, I'd feel more naked than I ever did with any clothing and armor, and yet keeping this things from Angel, they weren't right. But if he wanted to judge me, he'd get the whole story, not half of it, not just a portion so he or any of you could judge me in a vacuum, I needed to explain why I was who I was.

"I went to school, and found a young Toa of Iron one day, about the same age as me. He was all alone, an orphan. We went to this little school, it wasn't much, wasn't good like these villages, these cities. Not everyone who lived in Xa-Koro wanted to be there, there were good people there. Anyways his name was Pae, and we became friends. Each day we'd join and do all sorts of things together. He would come to our house, and Dad being the good guy he was, invited Pae to stay. Pae though, could never stay. But he'd always find me or I'd find him. We got older, and I got the bright idea to strike out against all the criminals, to be true Toa, to be like the Mata, like the ones I heard about here on the mainland. Pae joined me and we started doing things, helping people we kept our faces hidden, so they couldn't find us or the ones we loved. Except it wasn't foolproof."

I didn't want to go back here, bodies in pools of blood flashing in my mind like after-images of the sun burned into your cornea from staring too long, and I remember staring too long for far longer than any young girl should have.

"After one seemingly successful theft, I came home to see my father and brother lying in pool of their own blood. They were stabbed and beaten, so many cuts, so much blood, so much bruising. I could barely recognize them. And-and-and we had to leave, I ran way into the woods, I didn't want Pae's blood to be on my hands, even now when I look I still red on these hands of mine. I hated Mata Nui, how could he make a work in where people were so ####### up? Why would he let some stupid girl, put her family in harm's way like that. I was a stupid girl, I still am it seems."

I would have preferred to have been dragged through glass than talk about this, I would have rather burned to death, screeching like an animal then stand here on trial in front of Angelus, feeling like I betrayed him. Feeling like I was close to that edge, where I'd lose it all, again. I wiped away the wet spots on my face and pushed to get through this.

"So I ran away, I barely survived, one day where I was on my last legs, I found something, I found Makuta. I found my resolve, Makuta symbolized power, and to me that's what I wanted, what I needed, with each passing day, then week, then month, then year I got stronger. I came back to Xa-Koro and killed the criminals, the gangs responsible for my family's death and so many others. I made an example of them, Makuta gave me what Mata Nui never did, license to go as far as I wanted, as far as I felt I needed to. I found Pae and we joined up with the Followers of Makuta. We struck a blow against the ILF, we hurt people, people that didn't deserve it. I thought I could do what for myself what Mata Nui never did for me and the others, but it turned out I was just as stupid when I was younger, when Makuta brought Rahkshi to bear on the villages I could tell he wasn't taking prisoners, that he would destroy families, kill children on a whim, him and the others all consumed by a lust of power. So I quit, I fought and helped as best as I could, I became a mercenary, looked at the ruble of the Islets of what used to be my home. Pae looks like he left that life behind him, which is good, it's my fault he was there in the first place. I shouldn't have left him with them, it's my fault. He's a good person, I'd die for him, you'd have to hurt me, before you did anything to him."

"I came here, I joined the Guard, became a detective, and felt like a good person for once in my life, fell in love with this city, fell in love with you. I can't go back to who I was before, I don't want people to see me as I was. I don't want you to hate, I don't want any of you too, but I think you do. And I probably deserve it for not telling you, but I was afraid, afraid of what you'd think of me. That you'd never forgive me. I don't want you to hate me Angelus."

IC: "Welp. Let's get moving, then, Captain." the Fa-Toa said casually, ushering Korzaa out the door and setting it shut behind them. Taking a slight lead and keeping her to his right and always within his peripherals at the worst, they hit the streets, making the short walk down to the Akiri's hut.

Mangai Volcano - Ta-Koro

OOC: Po-Matoran Doseki & Nui-Jaga Scorpio

IC: The Ta-Koro Guards didn't know what to think as first. While they have seen Nui-Jaga in the wilds of Mata-Nui, they have never seen one up close and so under control. They gave Doseki back his badge before huddling into a tight circle. Two of the Guards kept their spears trained on the Nui-Jaga who was none too pleased and started fidgeting and waiving his claws and tail back and forth to get them to back off. Scorpio was not able to fully defend himself as every time he tried to open his claws the restraints Doseki placed forced them shut. Doseki turned around to see what the commotion was and he had to step between Scorpio and the two guards antagonizing him. "You two should be ashamed of yourself. Picking on a defenseless creature. I am willing to bet you would not be so brave if he wasn't restrained." Doseki gave a sly look from behind his mask as he questioned the two guards bravery.

Several of the Other Guards broke the formation and walked up to Deseki. "We apologize for these two. They are new, carry on your way, just be sure that thing stays under control." The Ta-Koro guard pointed to Scorpio. Doseki gave a nod before mounting up and climbing on Scorpio's back. He then walked past the group of Ta-Matoran and entered the Square...

OOC: Prowl, Fulmen is in the square.

IC (As Fulmen): "Not a single vo-matoran selling batteries here. Darn..." Sighed the sand blue matoran as he walked through the square, looking at the ta-matoran doing their shopping. "I should buy some food at least and check for any jobs that might be available in this town." He said to himself as Fulmen noticed a sign. "Kane-Ra steak? I suppose that will do..." The matoran of lightning walked into the butcher and waved to the ta-matoran in charge. Fulmen dug out 10 widgets and requested a slice of the Kane-Ra steak. A few seconds later, the vo-matoran walked out of the shop with some more food. The matoran could see a tan object in the distance. "What is that?" He asked himself as Fulmen squinted his bright yellow eyes. "RUN! IT'S A NUI JAGA!" He shouted as the matoran sprinted into market, causing a panic.

The three thirds of Angelus were in open rebellion:

>Well, that was all I wanted to know.

>>Kino come on don't cry it's not a big deal

>>>I uh...I only wanted to talk Antidermis

Was he supposed to do something? Girls! Why didn't the jungle grow girls!? Or why couldn't Kino be a particularly venomous berry? Maybe she was. That was the ticket. Kino was a really poisonous...lime.

A lime that looked good in leather, and laughed at his bad jokes, and handled herself in a fight well. He had spent the night in her apartment. She had turned him on to ice cream parlors. She just said she loved you, dude, GET IN THERE!

He half-sat on the desk and wrapped both arms around Kino's neck, hugging her with as much encouragement as he hoped you could pump into a hug. He looked for a few words of comfort, something that could accurately communicate that he didn't care how she'd spent her past, and what was important was that she and Pae were here to help now, and that if anything she could atone by using what she knew of Echelon to help them out here. What, he thought, would let Kino know I care?

"Uhh...flananagle."

IC: No sooner did Doseki arrive in the Ta-Koro square did a riot break out from seeing the Nui-Jaga that was under his butt. "Well this is just cute. You would think they never seen a Nui-Jaga before." Doseki pat Scorpio just behind his head to try and keep his friend calm. At the current moment in time the furry of panicking inhabitants was agitating Scorpio and activating his predatory response. "Try and keep calm old friend or we are going to have a lot more explaining to do." Doseki tried to pull back on the reigns to limit the Nui-Jaga's movements as it was hissing and chattering about as it waved it's claws around and skittered from side to side.

OOC: Liuth, Prowl,  a Nui Jaga isn't going to cause a panic. Nor would it overly agitate the Guards as a whole. If either of these things were true, it never would have been allowed past the gate. :P

IC:

Several Matoran did begin to run... Until they actually saw the Rahi in question. As a whole, Ta-Koro wasn't a place that frightened easily. The mere fact that the shops were open the day after the Piraka attack proved that, and in truth the Matoran weren't running away... They were moving to get out of the way, in the event that the Guard came in to pacify a potential threat. In the decades that Makuta had ruled the island, such things had become commonplace and one learned very quickly not to congregate around the issue when the Guard might intervene. It made their jobs harder.

One such Guard placed a hand on Fulmen's shoulder, looking very exasperated.

"Can we not start a panic over nothing, please?"

OOC: Po-Matoran Doseki & Nui-Jaga Scorpio

IC: The crowd started to calm down after a few moments as did Scorpio. Once the commotion had ended Doseki slid off the back of the Nui-Jaga and onto the Ta-Koro ground. "Well that was not fun." Doseki patted Scorpio's side to further calm him down then threw a piece of meat into the Nui-Jaga's mouth where it quickly vanished. Doseki then walked over to the Guard and Fulmen. "If I may offer my apologies for the ruckus. My name is Doseki of the Po-Koro Guard." Doseki showed the guard his badge. "I was in the area and needed some repairs and supplies to my equipment. I hope we didn't cause too much trouble." Doseki then looked at the Vo-Matoran who seemed to have started it. "So what's your name? I take it you have never seen a Nui-Jaga like mine before. I am not surprised. He is very unique member of his species."

IC: Pae - Ta-Wahi - Road to Ga-Wahi

Pae continued, "Korzaa knew very little. At a lapse for guard rounds, an assassin slipped into the abandoned building Matoro often worked in and killed him with his present assistant's tablet and chisel. He fled to leave the assistant with the murder weapons and was found later. Korzaa said the killer had bit down on something - coin likely - and was killed by subsequent poison. Korzaa exhausted resources trying to find more information on the dead killer but found absolutely nothing."

He paused, "I cannot speak for you both. But my contacts are more than not associates of Echelon. I would ask them for information if it would not lead to our eventual hunting down and being killed. Are there contacts either of you could consult?"

IC (Jin)

I was about to say no, but then I remembered something. Or someone, to be more specific.

I slid into the chair across from the Matoran, looked him over. He was the bookish type: scrawny and haggard, not an ounce of extra weight on him. The parchment and quill confirmed that diagnosis pretty quick.

He looked up, his green eyes glowing softly, and smiled without showing his teeth, or showing any emotion at all, either.

“Good evening,” he said quietly. “How may I help you?”

For some reason, this guy gave me the creeps. He wasn't creepy, exactly, and seemed pretty normal overall, but every word he spoke was precise and measured, and the way he looked at me made me feel like he knew exactly who I was, and everything about me to boot.

“I'm looking for information,” I replied. “Someone told me you could help.”

Back when I was deputy of Bad Company (am I still deputy? was never officially fired...), Brykon took me a quiet bar in Onu-Koro to get some info. Our contact was a skinny, well-dressed Matoran who seemed to fancy himself a poet, cause our intel was written in verse. But I guess that kept it safe: a random grunt who happened to come across one of those spidery messages would find it impossible to understand. Or, even more likely, he'd just dismiss it as weird poetry.

Anyway, the guy'd had all the intel we'd needed, but I'd gotten the feeling, sitting across from him, that he knew a whole lot more than what he let on. Never mind that he'd known the location of the only Komau on the island, which was impressive enough. I guess I didn't work for Brykon anymore, but this guy'd probably sell us some info if the price was right, and Polzin's pocket's aren't shallow.

I cleared my throat. "I might know a guy. But I'd have to go alone."

IC: Korzaa

She nodded and clenched her teeth as she let herself get escorted out of the office, walking down the ash-covered path to another one. Again, she was being dragged along without control of her movements or direction, again her decisions were made for her, again she was out to engage in more futile planning. It irked her greatly. But what else was she to do?

Korzaa knocked on the door of Jaller's office.

"To random strangers, random friends," The Ta-Toa paused, just a moment, balancing a will o' wisp on her finger. Then she downed a substantial amount of her glass, before adding to her toast. "And the Lavapool Inn."

IC:

"I-" Jaller began, before being interrupted by a knock at his door. He visibly frowned. It was exceedingly rare for his secretary to permit anyone to approach when he was already in a meeting, especially with as many people as this. It wasn't Angelus, either. The Captain of the Guard had a very unique way of knocking (or occasionally not) at the door, and over the past few weeks he had become very accustomed to it. Someone else was at the door. Either someone important, or someone who shouldn't be there.

He gave one more quiet tap of the desk with his fingers, holding up the other hand for the Kalta to be quiet.

"Come in."

IC: Sheesh. I'm just doing my job, lady, no need to get so worked up over it.

Sparing Korzaa a glance over his shoulder as he turned back, Jolek retraced his steps at a brisk jog, keeping an eye out for any incidents along the way. Technically, though he apparently went through a very streamlined version of the training process, he WAS a guard now.

Anyone deciding to get naughty in his presence, well, he was now actually supposed to beat them into submission and cuffs.

A nice setup. Granted, he actually hadn't quite gotten to the cuffs and uniform and all, but he's get there after reminding Angel.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IC: "Cheers." came the wan note from behind the group, as their Bo-Toa made his reappearance official.

"Looks like you guys've found some of the good stuff, huh?" he asked rhetorically, taking a sniff of the very odorous air as he sat down with them, clinking the hilt of his sword to Saeva's glass.

Any other time, he'd have asked for one himself...

But he had first-hand accounts of what went wrong when he mixed booze and his family life.

He'd politely abstain, this go around.

"So, what else ya grab?"

The group quickened their pace on spotting the Matoran, and passed into the small cave. Those of them that took a moment to look at their surroundings saw that the space they had entered was roughly spherical in shape, with three passages opening off it: one they had just come out of, and two close together ahead of them. To their right was, as Vaisaga had already noted, a small pool of lava. Strangely, a number of what appeared to be darkly-coloured tubes or pipes of some sort ran up out of the lava and trailed away along the rightward tunnel. Was the lava being pumped somewhere?

But most attention was being paid to the body slumped against the rock between the tunnels' openings. As they approached they could already see that this Matoran, like the one before, had one of the mysterious plant pods latched onto the back of his neck.

It was not entirely the same, however. While the previous one's central orb had been dark and translucent like smoke quartz, this one's glowed orange. There was no mistaking it for some reflection of the lava, though it had the same fiery brightness as the molten rock: the light was definitely coming from within the orb at the centre of the plant-parasite.

IC: Torana

She wordlessly raised her glass to toast and took a sip as Erzu entered.

"Some help with these broken bones might be in order."

He motioned to his chest, wincing in pain as he shifted his posture slightly.

IC: The Kalta stepped back, Kalyss nodding. Vakua slipped on his headphones, half out of respect and half to avoid another headache from someone who didn't know to lower their voice. Of course, there was still communication occurring during this time.

Vakua, you know who these people are?

One is captain of the guard, judging from the stray sounds I picked up. I do not know the identity of the other.

Casanuva raised an eyebrow. The office was beginning to get a bit crowded, he thought, looking around him at the five other toa and single matoran besides the Akiri.

The times, they are a-changing...

IC: Mirra and Wisp.

Wisp shuffled back agaisnt the nearest wall to make more room, and Mirra moved to stand next to him. The office didn't seem built to accommodate so many beings at once.

IC: Korzaa - Jaller's Office

Feeling especially awkward as Jolek, who she thought was supposed to be escorting her, turned tail and sprinted away, the Captain entered the office. Jaller, unfortunately, was not alone, but surrounded by others, who were all staring at her as she slipped into the room. She felt very aware that she was a stranger and an oddity in this fiery village's bureaucracy.

"Am I interrupting something?" she asked, although it was very clear that she was.

IC:

Wait.

Wait I'm the escort.

Wait that means I take her back once she's done

He could feel the gravity of that little detail hit him like a ton of bricks. This was why he needed training, Angel.

With all the clairvoyance and forethought of a Cell Saga Goku, Jol spun on his heel and sprinted back the way he'd came once again, hoping to all hope that that mistake would be rectified-- she'd be talking there for a while, right? If he just got back and waited outside while she was talking, he technically wouldn't have screwed anything up!

Genius, Jolek, genius.

Once again, the hut came into view, and he took up a post outside, ignoring the amused glances from the Akiri's personal guards flanking the door.

Like they were never new, right?

...

Angel must never know.

IC Solvi

She sneezed. Was it the ash? Thoughts fluttered through her mind as she approached the Shaddix mansion. (She was a guardswoman, in case you had forgotten. Squatting is against the law and any officer of the law would do the same as her had they encountered a dormant building with such a... Lively, atmosphere)

They centered around the Dasaka in Ga-Koro. Despite their initial disagreements, they had seemed an amiable and able bodied group. Well, Sinshi had at the least. She had been quite irritated when the male foreigner had stepped between her the Labelle character... Her gut had told her to cut her down on first sight. Just as it had for the first thousand paces towards her home.

And for the next thousand paces.

She was confident the foreigners would visit Ta-Koro eventually, she would just have to trust their judgment and ability to defend themselves. I mean, it was probably a non-issue, wasn't it? What were the chances the deformed woman had actually attacked them? Quite low I'd have to imagine!

The door was quite the grand one. It's doorhandle was quietly (somehow) knocked off by a blow of her sheathed sword. Knocking would only alert any possible squatters to her presence. A repair can be commissioned later. She thought to herself.

...but close to it

"I think...this one may be alive. Be careful." the Wasp said, eyeing the strange plant-like attachment.

IC: (Mura/Jaller's Office, Ta-Koro)

The office seemed to be filling up with more beings, so Mura moved to one side...he suddenly just wanted to get out of here, and be on their way.

IC: Malik (Ta-Wahi Forest, Shaddix Manor)

Home.

That's what I'm supposed to start off with right? I'm supposed to feel a degree of relief right? Ease? Peace? Truth to be told I felt none of that, probably because this place didn't feel like home. The closest thing I had to a home had been in Ko, Dorian and I used to play around in the icy wastes. I still remember that one time we had been in the Mt. Ihu drifts. I had the dumb idea to try scaling the mountains, thought it'd be nice to see the view from the top. However slippery snow makes it hard to scale a mountain and the raging blizzard most definitely did not help. If it wasn't for Dorian's quick thinking, I would have fallen from the Mountain side and his quick thinking saved us again as he figured out a way to navigate the snowy drifts.

I would have been lost and alone had it not been for my brother, but that was all in the past. My home in Ko was gone and so was Dorian. Reminiscing on such things just wasn't worth it. It only stirred up painful memories, memories that I did not care to relive.

Which brings me back to my present location. A home I visited only a handful of times during my childhood. A home my father represented our nobility, an absurdly foolish notion. Dor and I learned at a young age that there was little nobility in our family. Just a bunch of foolish old men playing make believe. Wealth existed in our family, but no nobility. A truth my father never seemed to have realized. This house represented a culmination of all of those foolish ideals, the extent of my family's so called "nobility."

Beyond these doors awaited a world of wealth and prestige, but I still cared little for any of that. I was here for the free room and board. The chance to sleep in the comfort of an actual bed. My mind and body yearned for a nice long rest, after all I hadn't treated it well at all. It almost made me want to apologize, but there was still work to do, there was always work to do.

My eyes returned to the doors in front. Carved and elegant, with the seal of the House Shaddix ringing out as those it actually possessed a degree of nobility. It was as pathetic as it was sad. Darkest before dawn? Those words held no meaning for Malik. This island was always dark, if a dawn was to come it would be on the blood and toil of those suffering during the dark. Always looking towards the dawn served to forget the sacrifices of the past. The dawn wouldn't rise on its own, it required the work of those toiling in the darkness.

Darkest before dawn was nothing more than a powerless noble's reassurance to his people.

A part of me wanted to turn back here. This house represented all the evils and foolish pipe dreams in my family, the memories I didn't want to relive kept flooding back as I stood upon this ground. Performing foolish pranks on villagers. Fighting alongside Dorian when they went bad. Reading novels of heroes and legend with my sister.

Dreams of an idyllic past that merely served to haunt me.

I had to laugh honestly, and a slight chuckle did escape my lips. Since when did my thoughts grow so dark. When did I get so dark? I was always the jokester, the naive fool in my family, and here I was brooding about how foolish my ancestors had been. It was as pathetic as it was laughable. Dor would kill me if he saw me like this. I'd probably end up with a punch to the jaw as my bro told me how much a whiny fool I was being.

The longer I stood here the more the forest served to darken my thoughts. The ash of Ta-Wahi wasn't the kind of place that inspired happy and serene views. I could either stand here, staring at the door of house I had every right to enter. Wasting away my time and ruining my name even further.

Or I could open it.

The answer should be obvious.

With a push I threw open the doors of the manner. I was the last Shaddix and I guess in odd sort of way that made me master of this house. Funny how these things end up working.

The master was home and he desperately needed to sleep.

IC: Just as he had sat, Erzu rose with alert eyes and an iridescent mask, raking a hand through the air to show he needed silence, now.

"Think we might have guests."

And what a time to have that new sword at his belt.

IC: "Well, could we start with the directions for the hospital in this city?" Kellin asked, giving Karaihe an odd look.

"We can worry about all those other ones later, my buddy here's trying to talk through broken ribs."

Jaller's eyes gleamed instantly, and after a moment's pause, he looked to the Kalta. "I'm afraid I have to ask you to leave. There are some thing I need to discuss with our newest guest that would not do to have heard by unknown ears. If you wish to be of assistance, take the cable car and travel to Ihu-Koro. Many refugees have gathered there, and I am sure the Koro's leader will need the assistance. I already have troops present there. They will house you if need be."

Even as he gestured to the door, he looked again to Korzaa. "Captain, please, have a seat. You look like you could use a rest."

Instantly, a grin reappeared on Saeva's face as she set the glass down, wreathing her firsts in fire.

"Ah, what the heck, I'm getting old anyways..." Sanguivox reached out with his staff, keeping himself as far away as possible, and tried to poke the thing on the back of the Matoran... well aware that he could be endangering himself.
