IC (Jin)

As I left, I saluted my partners with two fingers to my temple. "See you there."

OOC Jin out of region.

IC:

Cloak? On body.

Daggers? In belt.

Rifle? Over shoulder, probably armed.

Nika watched as his fellow Vortixx departed, his lazy gaze shifting from her form to his Toa companion. A moment of silence followed, whereupon he reached out for Pae - then jerked his hand back slightly - then patted the massive figure twice on the arm.

"Good luck, Pae," the Vortixx said, turning to the door. "See you in Ko-Koro. Try not to ... die, or anything."

And with that, he was gone.

OOC: Nika out of region.

IC: Pae - Ta-Koro - Abandoned Warehouse

Pae said nothing as Nika left.

He stood silently after the door closed shut; much longer than he usually would. Minutes passed before he gave a sharp intake of breath. There was a lot to think about. But there would be time enough for that later. Right now, the priority was to rest. There hadn't been much of that for days now. Rather, there hadn't been much of that for a life-time.

Always running, always planning, never stopping.

Pae - if he weren't so disciplined - might have sighed as he lowered himself down into the shadows, and wedging himself into a darker network of crates. He closed his eyes, and almost immediately fell fast asleep.

* * * * *

What seemed to be instantly, Pae began to dream. He stood in a featureless room without walls. With an attempt to move, he was greeted with a pair of hands on his shoulders. Their grip was hard and cold and they felt bony. Before he could react, they slid up his shoulders and around his neck. He reached up in a panic to pry the hands free but found no lodging in their squeezing form. He open his mouth to gasp for air instinctively, but instead, salt-water fell from his mouth, splashing onto the floor and running down his chin and chest. Pae began kicking wildly.

That was when the whispers began.

Pae writhed in the grasp of his killer, and when he kicked his head back he saw the face of Echelon, clad in black and smiling something sinister. Pae tried to reach above his head to grab Echelon's face - maybe force his fingers into the madman's eyes - but found no lodging as the dark toa simply moved his head and neck away. With every choking sound, Pae seemed to spit out water. He felt as if he was fading away, but just before everything went dark, he felt Echelon bend forward and kiss him.

Pae then reached for Echelon's throat, but before he could squeeze the life from the man kissing him, the whispers turned to shrieks. It felt as if the screams were rattling his skull, pounding his ear drums until they shook themselves apart, felt by every fiber of his being. And as quickly as the voices escalated, multiple hands began to claw at him from every direction, peeling back his skin, dripping blood onto the ground. With Echelon now vanished Pae tried to enter the fetal position and cover his ears, but every time he reached for them, the same hands ripped his palms back down. "N- * no!" he let out. But the voices only seemed to grow in volume and intensity.

Bony hands grabbed his legs and pulled them away from his chest. Pae let out a grunt as he tried desperately to close himself off once more, "Don't!" Fingers jabbed below his sternum, and Pae tried to call out, but once more when he opened his mouth he expelled sea-water. The fingers began to press harder and harder. The cacophony of voices began to grow again; this time groans of pleasure accompanied them.

Just before he felt the hands enter his stomach cavity, he saw Angelus reaching out to join the murderous claws, a serious look on his face.

* * * * *

Pae awoke with a very sharp breath and a hard jolt; his legs slamming against the warehouse wall they were positioned against. Sweat was dripping down his face and staining his armpits. His mouth tasted of acid, as if his unfed body had thrown up in the middle of his feverish dream. Of course he couldn't get any rest either. The dream felt like an eternity, but with a glance to windows across the way the sun had hardly moved. It must have only been minutes. Pae leaned against the crates again to let his breathing rate fall back to normal.

He hung his head and put his face into his open hands, and in them, Pae began to cry silently.

IC: Mimira

Mimira quickly drank through her straw, until her cup was empty and the sound of air sucking into the straw was clearly heard. Then she slid the cup over the same way Gunner had.

"Okay all done!" She exclaimed proudly.

IC: Taleen

There was nothing else to be said, Taleen simply gestured for Plagia to follow her as she quietly headed toward the exit.

IC: Pae - Ta-Koro - Abandoned Warehouse

Pae didn't go back to sleep. Instead, after a few quiet moments, he made his way outside again. On the outside, nothing about him had changed - minus some slight puff in his eyes - but inside Pae was quivering. For somebody who focused so heavily on self-control, when things as irrational as dreams could penetrate his focus or stability, it only made him feel weak. In his mind Pae knew that it meant nothing. Dreams rarely held significance. But that didn't make the fear he experienced insignificant.

He gave his head a little shake as the now cloaked Pae exited the alleyway.

Inside his soul, his fists shook and his body quaked, but his body glided through the village streets.

I watched Mim slide her glass across the counter, just like I had, and wondered whether my son would have picked that motion as quickly.

"Let's go," I told the kid and, turning to the barkeep, nodded. "Thanks for the drinks, miss."

IC:

For once, I was glad not to be the centre of attention as I followed Tal outside.

Easing the door closed behind us, I glanced over at the girl of the hour (also, surprisingly, not moi) and asked, "So ... now what?"

Mimira waved goodbye to the nice lady bartender. "Bye! Thanks for the drink! I promise to come back someday when I'm all grown up and drink like an adult!"

IC: Taleen

Taleen gave Plagia a shrug. "To be quite honest I didn't think that far ahead. I don't usually sneak away to avoid uncomfortable, social situations. Usually I sneak away for...other reasons. And I don't usually bring someone with me either, this is uncharted territory."

Taleen crossed her arms. "What do you usually do in situations like this?"

So, alcohol. Best thing ever or best thing ever? No, you don't get any other choices because then you'd probably pick the wrong one. After a few drinks, all of your problems just melt away. You no longer care about your past and all of the terrible CENSORED that's happened to you, all you worry about is if you can afford another drink. Hey, you might even find some good company too, someone just as drunk to talk with. Those conversations were always some of the best. So long as the drinks kept coming, everything was good.

If there was one thing i'd learned from my experiences, it was that sobriety wasn't anywhere near what it was cracked up to be. It wasn't by any means pleasant or tolerable. It sucked the fun out of life. It was time to fix that.

Pushing open the door of what I was 99% percent certain was a bar, I stepped inside.

OOC: Sooo... I'm old and haven't been here for a while. I have no idea what bars are still running now or if some new ones have popped up to take the old ones' places. If anyone can help, I'd greatly appreciate it.

"Aw can it Ril, you're gonna make me blush." I say, seating myself by the bar and sliding a few widgets across the counter. The bartender doesn't miss a beat and snags 'em right away, and within a few seconds there's a cold one sitting right in front of Ril. I settle for water since I've had enough to drink this evening. Also, no one's gonna insult me for drinking water; it takes a special kind of ###hole to do that.

I swivel my seat around, back against the counter with one arm resting on it. Must've missed Plagia and Taleen leaving 'cause clearly they're not here anymore. A tad disappointing, since I know Taleen'll probably try to make a move or something, but I forget all about that the moment I see their replacement pop into the bar.

"So Ril," I start, a suggestion in my tone. My eyes are still on the Le-Matoran with the flashy yellow Miru, strutting around without a clue about what he just walked in.

"You wanna do me a favour?"

OOC: Thanks, TX Wade! I think I vaguely remember the Magma Lounge.

IC: Kirgon

So, the Magma Lounge. That sounded like the name of a place that would have alcohol. Maybe a drug den. Perhaps a terrible poetry club. All three options could account for a great deal of amusement. Besides, who hasn't wanted to heckle a poet at least once?

As soon as I entered, I knew I was right. You could just smell it in the air, the sweet smell of utter intoxication. The depressed, the happy, the lost, the lonely, the addicted, the heavily drunk, the classic bar-travelers. I could easily guess which category each person fit into.

It was a thing of beauty, one I hadn't experienced in far too long. I walked toward the bar seats, a smirk breaking out across my face. It was time to get drunk. You see, I'm something of a master drinker, the king of all drinkers, if you will. I've taken on heavy-drinking Toa before without a loss, much to his utter humiliation and despair. Heh, Kinika. Hadn't thought of that loser in a while.

You see, I'm not just the dashing example of perfection you see before you. I have a tragic past, ladies.

Forced to flee my home as a youth, having to take care of my sisters on the deadly journey across the waves, surviving the attack of not one, but two groups of pirates.

I've trained in the Gukko force, but I was too much of a loose cannon to play by their rules.

I've traveled across the desert countless times.

I've fought against... my sister about her being too annoying and always being on my case... and she left in tears... and I haven't talked to her since...

Karz.

Now I really need that drink.

"Just to here from southern Po-Wahi. Not too much of a trek, but there's a lot to pack."

IC: Tezzek

Tezzek blinked twice, shaking his head slowly. "I'm sorry, dear companion, it seems I had zoned out there for a bit. My apologies." He turned back towards the panorama of gold and green, every crest now scorched orange by the late day sun. "That said, with a view like this, I'm surprised that there are no settlements here. Even as a tourist trap, a view like this is worth it." He said longingly, gazing at the landscape below.

OOC: Sorry that took so long, college classes started kicking my posterior.

Glancing towards the town at the base of the grumbling volcano, Tezzek sighed. "I guess you're right." He took a deep breath, squared his shoulders, and shot her a tepid smile. "To the village of fire, then. Lead on," he finished, gesturing forward in a wide, sweeping fashion.

Elly shook her head, still utterly confused, but not wanting to dwell on her missing waffles. "So, what's all happened? I have to buy everyone waffles apparently, but I think I missed something here..." She mumbled slightly, looking between the group, still utterly confused at what she missed.

What?

I never once claimed to be a good role model.

...

Still, though.

"Yeah, we'll see about that," I said, guiding Mim away by the shoulder.

IC:

"Normally, I drink, and when I don't drink, I fight," I said, glancing up and down the street. "But seeing as I am ... abstaining from booze until further notice, and I need my body at its optimum for Ko, that sort of narrows down our options."

"It would appear we have a choice between getting coffee and gambling. Any preference?"

IC: Mimira

Mimira appeared to be quite pleased with herself. Quietly humming some sort of tune as she picked up her hammer on their way out. She'd left it by the door, having been quite confident that no one would have been able to steal it.

IC: Taleen

"We could gamble in a coffee shop, or drink coffee in a casino."

"I like the cut of your jib, kid," I said, a smirk snapping onto my face double-time. "There's a place a couple blocks from here that's filled to the brim with gamblers. Called The Legitimate House to ward off cops. Doesn't have coffee, but I bet we could convince the owners to make a run to the nearest cafe for us."

IC:

I glared at the hammer.

If the hammer could have glared back, it would have. Mimira meanwhile seemed to be oblivious to Gunner's distaste for the hammer.

"I thought you'd like it," I said, looping an arm around her elbow and proceeding to drag her along.

IC:

"Good question," I said, slipping back into my coat. "Lohkar's probably still getting drunk with a Maru somewhere, and we've probably got a couple of hours of shore leave left. Where would you like to go?"

"I'd like to go to that ice cream stand over there."

IC: Taleen

"What are yo-" Taleen hadn't expected Plagia to loop an arm around her elbow, nor start dragging her off. It was making her feel...nervous? She wasn't suppose to feel nervous, she was trained not to be. Of course, she hadn't exactly been trained for social interactions such as this. She had no idea what she was supposed to do, she didn't like that feeling.

Then again, since it was Plagia that was dragging her off, it wasn't all that bad. Taleen wished she knew exactly where this place was though, just to be sure they were going the right way.

"How far is this place anyway?"

When both hands were sufficiently bound behind his back, and Elly's money had bought Saeva Sareta and Redhot Bomaye a plate of waffles covered in enough chocolate chips and whipped cream to pave the streets of Ta-Koro, he knew there was no getting out of this one.

Granted, he could out eat most people not born in the Lightstone District. You tended to rush through new foods you liked when they were that hard to come by. But Sareta...

I really hope I don't have to tell this story.

"Start eating in five."

Four.

Three.

Two and a half.

Two.

One and three quarters.

He looked to Erzu.

Zero.

"Wallahi, Sareta." As befit a friend and worthy competitor, he didn't bother hiding his natural accent.

Erzu's curious, surly "Go!" shot forward as fast as Solvi Soter's head, but Red hadn't noticed.

He lowered his head and began to eat.

IC: Red's got this. Erzu thought, as his eyes flicked back and forth between the two plates of waffles. A big guy like him has to be more capable of packing away an truckload of food than Sareta, even if she is Sareta.

That's just, I dunno, science.

Meanwhile, the eldest of the assembled three that hailed from Le-Wahi forked over one of his waffles to Elly's plate, content to eat at his own, comparatively less rapid pace.

What the karz have I roped myself into, though?
