It was a matter of seconds. Not even seconds, mere fractions of them, as Eisen soared over the inferno and his opponent rocketed upwards to meet him. The Maru's speed was inhuman, a power granted to him by the Parakuka affixed to his spine. There was irony there, that the dark Toa's opponent drew his power from one of Makuta's creatures. Not that he had time to think about it. He barely had time to register that Oreius had left the ground at all. The speed was terrifying, one aspect of the Toa of Fire's true might. He wielded his element in a region that deprived him of natural resources with ease, generated immense quantities of the hottest flames in an instant, and could move with such frightful rapidity. He had seen a Parakuka before, they were not exceedingly uncommon among Makuta's followers. It was very, very different to see its power in the hands of a Maru.

This was their might. Their raw power, the barely restrained fury of the hero of a wronged people. Oreius had not bluffed. His flames held the potential to decimate the region, and those that inhabited it. His Kanohi was an enigma granted by Mata Nui, and he harnessed the power of his most powerful foe to augment his frame. Eisen had barely realized he had left the ground before he felt one of Oreius' blades sink deep into his shoulder, one of the few regions not completely protected by his shield, and heard the other spark off of the aforementioned shield.

His foe had drawn first blood, and scarlet dropped to stain the snow below.

But Eisen's mouth quirked upwards. Not the feral smile of a Piraka, or the conceited one of the Necromancer, but the faintest expression of a predator that has spotted its prey. As little time as Eisen had been given to process Oreius' ascent, the Toa of Fire received even less to process the unseen force that slammed into his entire body and instantly reversed his trajectory. Rather than soar upwards, he rocketed uncontrollably to earth.

And the force didn't stop. Eisen had exerted the full effect of his Crast, designating Oreius' as the target, and it had dutifully flung the offending object outside of its sphere of influence. But Oreius could not be removed from that sphere; the ground was not far enough away, and Eisen's own trajectory brought him towards the ground. Trapped quite literally between a rock and a hard place, Oreius was caught between the Crast's effect and the ground experiencing tremendous pressure as the Kanohi tried to remove him from its space.

The projectiles Oreius had leaped to avoid now continued their original arc, only slightly altered, as they charged the suddenly grounded Toa. Eisen himself landed on his feet, albeit more heavily than he would have liked. The Toa of Fire's blade had bit deep, and he felt a steady flow of crimson leaking from the wound. But he would endure. Until the clock ran out, Oreius could not touch him; his Crast would not allow it. Even if he escaped the conflicting forced he was caught between.

"So, tell me, Mr. Tudor: Does the mask work?

IC:

Does the mask work?

Perhaps call it a heightening of intuition, a direct route from the mind to that "gut feeling" experts discuss being the answer to all conundrums. But there was no doubt, no lingering fear that whatever knee-jerk reactions blossomed in Sylus' belly, there, no, none at all, quite the opposite. He felt assured. Assured in a way that he had, perhaps, never felt before, not even when his father told him how his position amongst Saphirai Vod's empire would one day pass to him, because, after all, it never quite did in the way he expected.

Does the mask work?

Not in the way he expected. In fact, he didn't even quite understand how. It was a sensation not quite to be put into words, a sensation of pure knowing, like the voice of God whispering into his ear what was lie and what was truth

Does the mask work?

It allowed Sylus to know, although he could have determined simply from sheer physical proximity to the Piraka, all of Hakann's verbal reversals in a way that left no room for question. He knew, although he didn't understand how. His black eyes shone with wonder for a moment ... and then burned as brightly as his employers', his smile growing, smaller, but no less fiercely than the crimson devil before him. The devil who thought he was scaring Sylus Tudor with all of his lies, but who didn't realize the one final lie he had spoken that even the Rode couldn't pick up. After all, only one man would know it was a lie at all.

Does the mask work?

"Oh yeah," the Toa said, grinning. "Oh yeah, it works."

"Splendid. If you will follow me, we shall begin." I gesture to my selected building before beginning to move. Mind-Reading still whispers in flat tones, feeding me the streams of information slithering from the minds of the other Rahkshi.

Upon reaching the building's roof, I begin preparations and organise my Rahkshi. Silence and Mind-Reading, crouching out of sight of observers below, supply me with silenced weapons and crude situational awareness. The rest of my Rahkshi, preparing for combat, fly in two separate circles a fair distance away from my person, searching for the first signs of the coming violence.

Lava Launcher once again spreading its hints of warmth through my hand, its hum now strangled by Silence's grasp, I wait to see if Sylus' new mask is as all-seeing as its reputation suggests. If the rest of the Maru's rescue mission hide behind disguise or masks of subterfuge, Sylus and I shall prove disruptive. Mind-Reading alerting Marfoir and Lunefeld as to my new position and intention, I wait and appreciate the sounds of the duel below.

They hardly had time to realize that they had struck first blood before their flight reversed and they fell to earth. The Toa of Fire hit the ground hard, the impacted snow hitting them like a fist and knocking the breath from their lungs. They struggled to rise from the crater they had made, but could not: they strained against an invisibly force, muscles bulging, but could not rise. And all the while Eisen approached, his armour gleaming under the stars.

Inu retreated at Oreius' command; strength could obviously not help them here. Their minds pulled apart, leaving each feeling strangely incomplete. Their opponent harnessed some powerful force akin to telekinesis, but somehow different. Perhaps it stemmed from his mysterious mask, or perhaps Echelon had, through his dark arts, granted his servant powers beyond knowledge. Either way, it was impossible to fight.

His elemental powers returned. Oreius felt the flames burn in his blood once more, ready to command, and not a moment too soon: Eisen was upon him. Drawing a short breath, the Toa reached out into the ground beneath his back and flooded it with heat. The ice melted and gave way, and his opponent's strange power sent him rocketing further down into the snow and out of sight.

A long moment passed under the night sky. Then, in a burst of snow and heat, Oreius sprang from the snow some twenty feet away. His armour steamed, and he was breathing harder, each exhalation carrying vapour off into the night.

IC: Agrona - Ko-Koro Streets

I watched the fight with great intensity. Frowning slightly at the injuries Eisen had sustained for himself. That would be something to fix up later. Hopefully it would be the only thing.

I turned my gaze towards the other gathered party members, but underneath my cloak, my fingers were working secretly. I discreetly had lifted off one of my vials from my belt, and opened the top off. I hummed a little tune softly, and the insects under my cloth and atop my skin moved about. I was preparing needles.

Eisen wanted to win the fight with honour. I didn't want to challenge my powers of resurrection on his charred corpse. As trusted and powerful as he may be, Eisen was just one man. Was I planning on using these darts I was preparing? No, not unless I had to.

I narrowed my eyes as I silently worked, the contents of my craft completely hidden from any potential onlookers. I looked at Oreius with great interest. A hundred questions raced through my mind 'what if-', 'how can we-', and 'what will we-'. But chiefest at the moment was

'what exactly was that mask?'

Body thrumming with power, Sylus stood next to his employer in the sky.

"In case you're curious," he said, eyes fixed upon the duel down on ground level, "we don't seem to have any invisible folks around here." His smile glittered. "Since I'm gonna assume that that's the reason you decided to give me this here Kanohi. Am I correct?"

"You are an astute man, Mr. Tudor, but you grasp truth only partially. There are uses to your mask beyond situational awareness, however great a use that may be. If you must know, it has been some length of time since I have had the pleasure of a conversation honest on at least one side." I will leave his mask to determine which of my words are laced with falsehood.

"History suggests otherwise, Mr. Tudor." Lava Launcher reaches final charge stage, stabilizing and preparing for eventual fire. A hint of a smile remains visible, semblance of life brought to my lips with each spoken word. "However, at this risk of sounding wistful, I admit it would make for a pleasant change."

"That hurts, buddy," Sylus said, gaze twitching down to the gun in Hakann's hands. "Still, I won't deny that two gifts in one day is a pretty good incentive for me to be honest with a fellow. Might be you'll be the first man in the history of Mata Nui to hear what Sylus Tudor actually thinks."

"Yeah I guess coping isn't one of my strong suits." I admitted. "I'm much better at doing my job when the island is in peril."

IC:

"It's simpler." The admission was quiet, slipping out while Krayn settled a little more comfortably into his chair. He clasped his hands on his lap, making sure his revolver was still in easy reach, and permitted the boundaries of his hearing to expand. Early warning, so to speak; a way to hear anyone coming long before they were an issue. His compatriots would be loud, uncomfortably so, but he could manage. The adjustment even gave him an excuse to be quiet a moment longer. "Black and white. When the world's in danger, there is no indecision. There is just what needs to be done, and the way to do it. No time for petty squabbles, no time for bickering, no time to reflect. Just action."

"When the dust settles, you have to think. See where you fit, figure out what your next step in life is. Uncomfortable truths you ignored in the action present themselves." Another pause, this one punctuated by a brief sigh.

"I decided on that next step, and they yank out the rug. Still going to find somewhere quiet after this. Grabbed everything I wanted from Le, no need to go back. Thought it would be Po. I have a feeling it won't be."

"Oh? Why not Po-koro? I mean I personally don't care for Po-koro either, it's a little too hot and dry for my taste, complete lack of shade, sand gets in your everything. Honestly if I was going to move from Le I'd probably go to Ga-koro, the weather is pretty much perfect except for the occasional storm."

"I think things might be a little too complicated there." The former Guardsman said simply, contenting himself with maintaining a quiet clicking sound at a consistent pace. "Ta-Koro, maybe. Or Ga-Koro, if I feel like being near everyone else."

"Well yeah but...you didn't toss me through the door of Stannis Maru's home!" I paused, realising what I said. "He literally used me as a battering ram and then left me there in the rubble." I blushed as it was kind of embarrassing to me. "T-The point is I never want to see his stupid face again!"

"I think that tops the list of sentences that I wouldn't have heard two years ago." Krayn commented dryly, idly beginning to spin the cylinder on his revolver. "But thank you."

Arankhe continued to remain silent.

She didn't have enough contextual awareness or knowledge to make a valid statement, so she continued silently listening, eyes drifting back and forth as people spoke.

How the did he hear about that!? Does the whole island know!? By the look on my face it was safe to say I'd lost my composure. I stuttered briefly before turning it into a nervous laugh.

"W-Well what you have to understand about that...the thing is uh...I was under a lot of...dehydration is a ain't it? Hahaha...."

They ain't buying it are they? Why am I so weird!? I held on to the false hope that everyone was tired enough to buy my story.

Curse you Ironshaper! This clearly wasn't working in my favor.

"What is this an interrogation? Don't look at me like that!" I had a feeling I wasn't gonna get out of this so easy. I gave him a pout. "You're not gonna let this go are you?"

I hope you're happy Kale! Karma would get him eventually, at least that's what I told myself.

"Yeah, you'll grow to understand that we're all insane and Krayn is only pretending that he has any sanity to begin with. I mean look where we all decided to camp out!" I tightened the blanket I had around myself.

IC (Agni):

"I wonder, Merror," I started, realizing I sounded very tired, "if it might be of more use to focus on Ko-Koro itself. We started this part of the mission before Echelon took over the village. I doubt he will be lounging in his old lair at this point..."

IC (Merror)

"It was never just about finding Echelon, Agni," Merror sighed, sounding just as tired as his fellow Ta-Toa. "Every time I've faced him, he's had an advantage or some means of escape. If we could get inside that lair, we could find something, anything, to give us an edge against him. And at the very least we could put a cleansing flame to the place, and destroy the sick experiments and Mata-Nui-knows-what-else he keeps in there.

"But you're right. We need to turn our attention to Ko-Koro. That, or regroup with Dorian. Perhaps both."

IC (Agni - Ko Wahi drifts):

I could feel my brow furrow as Merror mentioned the name. Dorian. I hadn't seen him for a while now, though it certainly seemed much longer than it really was in my mind. Originally my task had been to escort him and use his knowledge of the mercenaries on Mata-Nui to find the ones responsible for the Turaga's deaths. Inject a dose of Joske though and we had gotten involved in a hunt to find Echelon that stranded us in Le-Wahi before helping an old enemy find his finaly resting place. Let's just things got crazy and complicated and leave it at that. And now we were abandoning that hunt too. And I still was unsure what to make of Dorian Shaddix. Professionally speaking, his rap sheet and associations were enough to drag him back into Ta-Koro by the scruff of his neck. Or Scarf. Whatever.

Speaking as a Toa, I could also see him trying hard to redeem himself. Often in an almost insane way, but he did try. To sum up: He is one of the most frustrating people I have ever had to deal with and I consider him an ally for the most part. With that out of the way, I shoved my thoughts into the back of mind and concentrated on the matter at hand again. There was a village to liberate.

"Sounds like the beginning of a plan." I told Merror. "We should probably head to Ko-Koro's outskirts and scout out the perimeter. I am sure we're not going to be only ones making their way to the village - we're bound to run into some others along the way."

OOC:Had a whole Aitua bit written for this post, but then stupidly closed the tab by accident before autosave could do its magic - will have to rewrite that one at a later point.

"Maybe once or twice. If I have, it's been a long time. It seems... or seemed to be calmer than the other Wahis."

I crunch something in the snow. Using my Matatu, I uncover a snapped tree branch.

A small fire pops into my hand, and soon the log is ablaze.

I reach out with it to the Air Toa without looking at him.

"Here."
