Asking for Money

I know this might seem a bit crass, but the rules don't seem to be clear on this.

Are we allowed to put a little "send me money" thing in our sigs with a PayPal email? Not offering anything in return, no explanation, just blatant "I want cash for Christmas."

I just looked through the rules, and, as did you, I couldn't find anything even remotely related to the topic in question.

But I would guess not, just from a gut feeling. I'm curious what the staff will say, though.

I'm basing my answer off of this topic, this topic, and instances in which members have asked for donations for relief efforts, for example.

There used to be a clause in the Ad Guidelines stating that linking to commercial sites was not allowed. As you'll see see in the "Linking to charity organizations?" topic, non-profits were not considered commercial by the guidelines. This means, of course, that for-profits were excluded. What you're proposing would be a for-profit type of thing, technically.

However, since the overhaul of the Ad Guidelines last summer, anything mentioning linking to commercial sites has been taken out of the topic. It is likely that the whole for-profit/non-profit distinction is now null and void. Furthermore, members have, for instance, received donations through PayPal links to help with recovery costs. What you're proposing is, of course, not the same as that example, but what it comes down to is the following: any rules forbidding such a thing do not exist anymore.

My answer, then: it's allowed, unless Black Six comes in and says otherwise.
