Hero Factory Knockoffs

Recommended Posts

Anyone come across any Hero Factory knockoffs? I've ran into a few on eBay. One common brand is "becool" from Hong Kong. Instead of doing 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0, they call their lines "Hero," "Hero2," and "Hero3." They all have the name "Star Soldier," which was also the name of a knockoff producer that made fake Bohrok. Anyone else spot any of these?

The brand is actually called "decool", and there're very common now around my region (SEA), and in China. The set quality's actually pretty acceptable for a knockoff. And their colours actually mostly stick to the original (hurrah!) Go find the Decool Von Nebula review on Youtube.

I myself have two Decool sets, one I've gotten many years ago (Toa Inika Nuparu) and one just last may (Mata Nui XL).

Decool didn't do too well for Nuparu's Rubber mask, and I had to crack his face a little (his face was completely lime-green) to fit it on. Besides that, the rest of the set was quite ok back then, though it had that rather strong plastic smell, and back then when there was that melamine scare, I washed my hands every time I touched it, haha. I took the set out again recently, but sadly, due to a lack of use, one limb connector completely broke at the socket as it was quite brittle :(

Toa Mata Nui, on the other hand, looks quite promising. I've taken the bags out of his box, but haven't gotten round to building it. I might post a review when I get to it... One interesting thing to note was that they modified his sword, such that it had a HF logo moulded onto it (not too bad) and it now lights up. Yes, like a Inika sword, and it has a nice blue light (batteries included too! :D) Can't remember how much I got him for, probably RMB130+? And he was quite a nice find too, as I don't think lego actually sold many of this set, or none at all (edit: in my region)...D: So I was quite happy to find him.

I've come across some Rahaga knock-offs before. They were called Brick Soldier and their Rahaga were exactly the same as Bionicle's except their heads were different and the pieces were much cheaper. Plus they went by the same name: Rahaga Kaulus, for instance!

I actually went and ordered a Decool BIONICLE Gelu just now just for giggles. I'll let you guys know how it is, if it ever gets here that is. Do they come in canisters or cardboard boxes?

cardboard boxes...the inka nuparu I got years ago was in a canister much like the original one. Nowadays they're all in boxes. Hope you'd get a pleasant experience, just dont get your expectations too high 8D

Do they use the same molds as Lego?

Not the exact same molds, per se. Most of these companies seem to make casts of Lego's parts and use them to mold inferior duplicates. Lego does a good job of destroying its own used molds specifically so other companies can't get their hands on them.

They seem to be getting better at it, IMO, and if you know Gunpla (gundam models) too, you'd know they can go to even almost being on par with the orignal. Haven't seen that with Lego Knockoffs though. One good thing with knockoffs though, their cheap (I cheap that way, but hey, there's a thrill in buying cheap stuff! 8D).

Can't companies just take the piece itself and cast a mold out of that?

That's what they usually do, but the resulting mold usually isn't as good as Lego.

It would likely be either one solid piece, or not included in the set at all... :P

Depends on the brand; cheaper ones may modify the set to the point it becomes totally different, while some would 'faithfully' reproduce the set in entirety.

Decool products tend to be pretty much the same thing.

So I just got my Decool Pyrox. It's pretty good actually and looks just like the real thing. It comes with a brain too, but it's slightly stiffer and more transparent. I have photos and a video review but I don't know how to post :P

I bought it online for $4 + $7 shipping from China to US, so not a bad deal. I think I might get Bruizer too cause I can't find it at all in stores anymore.

Video review of it if anyone wants to see the details. Well, I hardly go into any detail cause I don't usually make reviews and I have no idea what I'm doing XD but if anyone is curious about it.

Hey guys, as promised, and if you don't know already, here's a link to my review of Decool's Toa Mata Nui. Have fun! :D

Oh and thanks for the Pyrox review, haven't seen one from the Brain Attack Series yet; the latest I've seen is Breakout...

One lesson learnt from your review and my past experience though: Besides solid plastic, Rubberish pieces (eg: Inika Masks, Brains) from Decool aren't as good as the original...

I also got a BIONICLE Gelu, but that one wasn't as great. Joints were flimsy and color gradiants didn't work out. I wonder if they're doing Invasion from Below ones.

Apparently older kits tend to be of lower quality; I think Decool perked up its quality only quite recently...

You can bet they wont stop ripping off Lego as long as they can; it won't be long before you'll find IFB sets XD

IFB sets seem a lot more sophisticated. I wonder how they get the molds of the new pieces. (btw, has anyone heard of any Chima constraction figure knockoffs? Haven't seen any.)

I imagine to clone a piece they just obtain the actual set and create casts of the parts. It wouldn't be as refined, of course, but bootleggers aren't that concerned with maintaining the original's level of quality.

Wow, even though those are the biggest, most blatant copy-cat sets I've ever seen I'm kind of impressed by the look of the ninja masks.

Doubt it, they have ripoffs, then ripoffs of ripoffs.

Btw, I might sell the transparent brains that came with Pyrox and Bruizer knockoffs, if anyone wants them for MOCs or something. Not certain what they're worth yet.

Well knockoff are going to be around for a long time becasue I still see 1.0, so I think $0.05

Well how many people are actually going to be buying a set from China to get it?

I got my Bruizer Decool set and it was a butt to build compared to Pyrox. Also came with a brain that's much much darker than the original and the transparent orange parts actually look pink in the light.

Edit: Double post merged.
