IC: Wokapu, Lekori & Wokiya – Kofo-Jaga Nest – Onu-Wahi

“It is good to finally meet you in person,” Darien said, shaking Wokapu’s hand, “Your sister has said much about you.”

“Good things I hope,” Wokapu said, chuckling softly. He then looked to Lekori.

“Perhaps the Great Spirit does see potential in us after all”

“Not just the Great Spirit. Miss Cael wanted me to give you a message,” Lekori said, “’Mata Nui does not create unqualified Toa,’ she said, ‘there are only those who fail... and those who choose to redeem themselves’”.

Wokapu raised an eyebrow, and rested his right hand on his hip, “Wow. I honestly didn’t expect that from her. Surely she hates me”

“A lot of people hate you, Wokapu,” Lekori said, “While I believe Cael to be an exception, I don’t think that’s an issue that we should take too much time thinking about”

“Agreed,” Wokapu said. It was a painful admission, but it also empowered him. As the Toa of Air stood before his new friends and family, it dawned on him how much he had done for the inhabitants on the island… and how much he would have to do now to make up for it. But did he really want to “make up for it”? Wokapu knew that he had done so many great things for the Matoran across the island without them knowing, and Niici promised him that she would lead the Gentry into doing even greater things for the tribes.

Wokapu shook his head. No. Wokapu had a responsibility. Maybe being a clean-cut, traditional hero wasn’t Wokapu’s forte, but the least he could do was take down a villainous organization while saving a few key innocents. Plus, Wokapu needed to uncover the traitor – the one who framed Wokapu and got him into this line of thinking in the first place.

When Wokapu encountered this person, he would thank him.

“We have to move,” Wokapu said to his group, “Wokiya, I am so glad that you are safe, and from the bottom of my heart, I apologize for the way I’ve been acting this last century”

“Our fiery engagements got us nowhere, except closer to being desert or Jaga bones,” Wokiya replied, that classic, kindhearted smile flowing onto her face once again, “Tell us where to go”

“Well, the first thing we have to do is get Niici out of the Gentry,” Wokapu said. He then turned to Darien, “I’ll explain on the way, but the aristocratic club of Ko-Koro, known as the Cultured Gentry? No-good; I created it upon the foundations of darkness. Everything we touched, no matter how much it helped the Matoran, was also touched by the Makuta. My alliance was as cowardly as it was foolish, for it was a servant of the Makuta who broke my back and left me in this Kofo-Jaga cave. Well now, I’m not going to just sit back and let a monster I created grow stronger. I’m going to expose the truth about the Cultured Gentry, because it’s only right that I be punished for my actions. However, it’s not right that I allow my friend Niici to be part of that. I brought her into this and I will get her out before I pull the rug”

Wokapu cast his eyes downward as soon as “Niici” escaped his lips. He still felt the ice cold spike that lodged itself through his heart when Niici (albeit kindly) forced him back to earth, a breezy infatuation put down by the frost. Wokapu tried to convince himself that these feelings were gone, but other parts of his mind would not let this girl go.

It was understandable; Niici reminded Wokapu so much of himself, as if they had spent a previous life together. She was the only one that Wokapu felt like he could understand, but maybe that was why he was rejected. Perhaps Niici did not want to merely be with herself.

Wokapu stifled a sigh. He couldn’t think about this now.

Meanwhile, Wokiya winced at the name. She hated to remind Wokapu of this, but the Ga-Matoran didn't particularly like Niici at all, for reasons she knew Wokapu would dismiss as erroneous.

“I know the way out of here,” Lekori said after peeking out of the cave entrance and down the tunnel, “There is a highway that goes to Ko-Wahi that’s rarely used. I can take us there.”

“Thanks, Lekori,” Wokapu said. The Toa of Air then turned around and picked up his golden armor that lay against the cave wall. A few pulls and clicks later, Wokapu’s golden shoulder pads, chest plate, and katana were on his person. The gray shin guards and gauntlets were also equipped.

“Darien, I’m glad you’ve chosen to join us,” Wokapu said to the newcomer, “I should warn you now that I’m a fugitive, hunted by the Makuta’s servants. I cannot guarantee that this entire quest will go without arousing the notice of the Master of Shadows. If you’re willing to fight with me, then I would most appreciate it. Eventually, we all may have to confront the darkness. Perhaps we can help each other do that on this journey”

Wokapu paused for a beat, as if trying to think of something related to Mata Nui. The truth was, Wokapu didn’t really pay much regard to the sleeping Great Spirit, hence the alliance with the Makuta all those decades ago. What could a sleeping god hope to provide to the Matoran? As long as the Matoran were comfortable, let his brother rule. If the traitor had not come and utterly shattered the lives of Wokapu and his sister, the Toa of Air likely would have retained that mentality.

“Let’s move,” Wokapu said, moving out of the cave for the first time in several weeks, and following Lekori to the Onu-Koro Highway to Ko-Wahi.

OOC: Wokapu, Lekori, Wokiya, and Darien to Ko-Wahi…

IC:

A short distance from the assembly of council members, just across the road in fact, an Onu-Matoran sat still. His eyes were fixed on the building in front of him, but his gaze was hidden by the gray fedora perched low on his head.

For the first time in a long time, Tarnok had foregone most of his armor, instead wearing a simple black suit. It allowed him to blend in better with the slew of politicians both inside the building and mulling about outside it. But were anyone to see them, they would find that his eyes were very different from their's. No faux joviality existed, instead, they were filled with a barely concealed anger.

He had arrived back in his home little less than a week ago, only to find that in his absence, many things had changed. At first, the changes were welcome. Signs that the village's leadership had broken free from its stagnation were everywhere, signs of change for the future. It wasn't until he heard of the one leading the changes that he began to grow suspicious. A Xo-Akrainid, in and of themselves a rare species. But beyond that, it was one that the Onu-Matoran had never once seen in his village. A newcomer, so quick to come to power in the absence of the Turaga? Enacting changes that seemed too good to be true?

So he had taken a second look at the proposed changes, and found that not all of them were quite as benevolent as they seemed. In fact, many of them contained traces of a larger plan. More power was being given to the Ussalry, but who was it that controlled the Ussalry? Many officials had long been corrupt, and it would have been easy for the Akrainid known as Kyju to sway them to his side.

I came home expecting little change. And instead, a coup began in my absence. Once more, my village is under threat. But this time... It may not be an enemy I can fight. If this Kyju is who I suspect he may be, then I will have to find a way to prove it. But how can that be done when so many officials may be in the palm of his hand, and so many other mistrust the squadron I come from?

.... Perhaps there is only one that I may be able to speak with.

OOC: Leli from Le, sorry Void, but I've gotta keep her moving.

IC: Leli

The diffused sunlight streaming through the thick jungle canopy quickly disappeared as Leli had entered the Onu-Wahi Highway on her ussal.  The dikapi was still held tightly under her arm as she moved through the lightstone-lit tunnels.  She really, really didn't like Onu-Wahi.  It was cold, damp and so... Low.  Leli was used to being on the tops of trees, swinging from place to place.  to be so far underground was... Unnatural for a Matoran of Le-Koro.  Actually, it was just unnatural for anyone.  Or so she thought.

Her ussal, who she had chosen on account of its bright pink shell, didn't seem to mind.  As a matter of fact, the crab seemed almost happy to be beneath the ground.  At least someone is...

The trip to Onu-Koro didn't take that long with her ussal navigating the dark tunnels, and soon the green-armored Matoran was int he underground city itself.  It had taken her a bit to get used to walking around without the suns overhead, but she could get used to it.

"Oh Tarnoook~" came a sing-song voice common to those of the Village of Air from behind said Onu-Matoran, before the owner of the voice ninja-tackle-hugged the Matoran of Earth to the ground.

IC: Tarnok

As he fell, the Onu-Matoran reflexively reached for one of his knives, only for two things to stop him. The first was the realization of who it was that had tackled him, namely, the very Matoran he had been waiting for. The second was a matter of practicality; He'd left most of his weapons at home.

Carefully, he readjusted his hat. "Hello, Leli. Been a while."

IC: "Hello, Gavarm." A trickling sound of liquid filling a container, followed by a clearing of the throat. "How are you today?"

"Excellent."

A pause. "You forgot the courtesy of asking me how I am at present--which is, incidentally, splendid. Are you quite all right?"

"Indubitably."

"Good. Now, let's commence with your report: Are 7th's members within the village once more?"

"Affirmative."

"Thank you." Another trickling sound, this time of liquid being sipped. "You've rendered an inestimable service to us all. By collecting that information, you have furthered our interests so that we might proceed." Then one more pause. "Salvation is at hand, Gavarm. Remember this."

"Indeed."

"A man of few words, are you?" A hearty chuckle. "Ah, but you are dismissed. We both have business to attend to."

Armor clacked on stone, protodermic pads resounding off floor in the exact echo of a kneel. "So you dictate, my liege." Then another clacking of armor on rock as a stride exited the area. It grew fainter and fainter until it disappeared.

All was silent. Crystalline emptiness in the air stretched on for seconds, minutes, days, years, eons of time without speech or noise. Dead air, without a trace of vitality or life.

Then a sound broke the void. Creation filled it, vibration brimming in the dark to make it light as fibers of the face produced a drawing of the lips.

"Rejoice.

"This is how an era ends."

The voice by Dendron sighed slightly. "Vhat do you know of ze ILF?"

Tarnok stood silently, almost absentmindedly dusting off his clothes, and glancing at the building across the way, the sounds of the party inside just barely audible. In contrast to the Le-Matoran's cheerful face, his expression was deadly serious.

IC. Kyju Speaks.Roughly two weeks later.Kyju lifted a tablet displaying news. Effects of last month's meeting had been near-immediate. The Onu-Koroans were as adaptable as the earth itself, and this instance showed that. Patrols throughout the city had been started that morning, and crime was brutally punished. But what went on just beneath the eyes of the law? With patrols out, less people were robbed in the city itself, but the highways were neglected to some degree. High-jacking was beginning to rise in criminal popularity. The very first day, an entire patrol squad had been murdered by a passing caravan. Though this caravan had been caught, they were sentenced t mere days of jail-time under Kyju's law. He had passed a bill limiting punishment over large groups to avoid "surplus imprisonment." The caravan was back on the streets the next week. "Intensive investigation" was an entirely watered-down version of what was going on. The Patrol Ussalry could enter houses without a warrant with "valid suspicion." This ranged anywhere from shady visitors to seeing a house that looked a little sketchy. This was similar to the lack of arrest warrant, which allowed them to bring in suspects without trial. Sometimes, trial was waited upon for days. And that was if your judge was fair. Criminals of petty crimes, such as thievery or vandalism, could face incredible punishment. There were murmurs of outbreak against the law, but these murmurs were muffled, gagged, tied up, and thrown into a jail cell. Things were hopelessly corrupt. Just as Kyju wanted it.He held a public conference, speaking to the irritated people of Onu-Koro. "Now, citizens," he said, "We know that this sudden increase in crime is unsettling, and we are doing everything we can to keep criminals from coming in your house, into your caravans, and into your shops. We are increasing work hours to make sure you are safe, even in the darkest cave, or deepest mines. I personally have spent sleepless nights strategizing against the criminal rebellion on the people of Onu-Koro. I believe I have come up with a valid way to keep our city from falling to crime:"He displayed a map of Onu-Koro."What you see here is a layout of Onu-Koro. We have hospitals, shopping centers, and mining operations, but I ask you: why is there merely one Ussalry barracks? Why are our patrol officers confined to one building, why commerce is abundant? I suggest that we place barracks here-" he pointed to multiple places on the map, "-and patrol towers here-" he pointed to even more, "-and military stations here, here, and here." He had wrapped up his proposal, and it was settled: there was to be some sort of military establishment on every street in the city. Work started the next day, and continued on into the weeks after. Taxes increased dramatically to pay for the construction, and even more to pay for supplies.Kyju was achieving true success. While the other members of his sect stood by and merely voted or supported, he was causing action. He was changing Onu-Koro. He signed off another contract: the initials KXR on another piece of parchment leading to the construction of his military buildings. He now had eyes over all of Onu-Koro. And it was all completely within the law. See, Onu-Koro was corrupted, but not by the criminals. Crime couldn't be corrupt, because it was always meant to he dissonance. True corruption was hidden within the law, which was never meant to be what Kyju was making it. However, nothing could stop it, in his eyes. But hidden without Onu-Koro was a power waiting to stop the corruption, simply sleeping, destined to awaken...

It had been a busy day for Kyju, as the days had increasingly become, but he never stopped working. Even in his own residence, Kyju schemed away; he was poring over his newest plans for a military building near the Ta-Koro tunnel when a rap came at his door. "Who is it?" Kyju called out, not looking up from his blueprint.

"Nuparu," the Onu-Matoran at his door replied. "May I come in?"

Of course, when Tarnok opened the door, he probably did not expect to see a Matoran-sized hole in the corner, with noises emanating from it.

IC:

A lonely Pianist sat in the corner of a quiet bar In Onu-Koro.  A thick, smokey haze could be noticed in the establishment, obscuring it's occupants.  It's not like you could see them anyways - The dim lighting made anyone without some form of enhanced night vision practically blind.  There were few lightstones, for new taxes left the bartender no choice but to save some for himself, rather than illuminate his business.  You could often tell if a table was occupied solely by the embers of a cigar, seemingly floating like fireflies in the murky darkness.

Anulhi's fingers danced on the keyboard of the old piano in the corner.  The solemn notes added depth to the conversations, for the music reflected the dark tone of that evening.  Criminals had spread like wildfire in the highways, crippling the trade to an extent.   This, combined with new taxes for buildings to enhance the military's reach, was driving prices upwards.

Things were never like this under Whenua's guidance, thought Anulhi, who continued to drone away on the piano, trying to add some vividness to the cold and unforgiving room.

IC:

Nuparu sat down across from Kyju; the orange and black Onu-Matoran was dwarfed by the immense frame of the Akrainid, but he sat without apprehension. "I'm an engineer of this Koro," Nuparu began, orange-armored hands folded in his lap. "I have been crafting machines designed to better the lives of my peers, to yield more ores, to illuminate tunnels more brightly, for as long as I can remember. I know the people of Onu-Koro." Kyju nodded, accepting the engineer's statements and encouraging him to get to the point.

"That's why I can tell you that the new identity you force us on, Kyju, is not the best one for Onu-Koro, and it is not one that will stick" Nuparu continued. Kyju kept nodding casually, but something in his eyes became colder. Nuparu saw his hand shift, but stopped it with his words. "Don't call your guards to take me away just yet," the engineer demanded with a surprising amount of what almost sounded like scorn. "I wouldn't do that, not until I'd heard me finish." Kyju, who seemed a little amused by the sharpness of the Matoran, gestured for Nuparu to continue.

"Thank you," Nuparu said, shifting in his chair. "Like I told you, I know the people of Onu-Koro. I know what they like, I know how they think; I know how they work, and perhaps most importantly, I know where they are best applied. You are not playing to our strengths, Kyju."

IC. Kyju's home."Now, Nuparu," he layed a hand on the Matoran's shoulder, "I wish nothing but the best for you and your fellow Matoran." The coldness in his eyes had dissipated, revealed to be naught but of the moment. Though he indeed dwarfed the engineer, he certainly did not impose in any ominous fashion. For an Akrainid with an affinity for the cold, he radiated nothing but warmth and care. "Understand that I care for those I serve. I love Onu-Koro and its inhabitants. I will not throw you to the guards for your views, my young friend. As such, pray tell just how you believe Onu-Koro would be best applied."Though Nuparu could not hope to come to such knowledge, he had narrowed down on just what Kyju was planning. The Koro was already rotting at its core, and the engineer was beginning to see that. Surely this meant that Makuta saw this as well. Kyju had planted himself perfectly, and threefold. Politically, militarically, and commersely. If one were to knock one or two pegs of the table down, it would continue to stand on its final one. And at this point, Nuparu and those like-minded could not knock down all three pegs.

IC:

Nuparu showed neither his doubt about Kyju's "love" for the people of Onu-Koro, nor his dislike of the Akrainid's condescension. Though he was an engineer by trade, Nuparu was also naturally a very good liar. This was how, even when making such a gamble as he was making, he showed none of his sensation of cold elastic bands wrapped around his ribs. He was outwardly as composed as ever, which was remarkably so for a normal Matoran addressing a being of such imposing political and physical stature.

But Nuparu had ideas, and he could think of little worse than to let a foreigner control or warp his Koro. Whenua was, as much as it pained Nuparu to admit, compromised, and their beloved elder could not be relied on to lead them any more, not when they had prepared guards and reinforced walls for his return; there was a very real power vacuum. Kyju had been very clever to see and fill that void, and he had erected a solid enough structure for himself to govern atop of. But Nuparu was an engineer, and the first thing you learned in his business was that every machine, every molded piece of metal, has a weakest juncture. This was really no different. Someone had to act against Kyju, exploit that flaw in his design, but not in the way that others had - bold-mouthed revolutionaries would be, had been, squashed.

Nuparu would be smart, and maybe he would survive. Since Kyju was talking down to him, Nuparu knew that Kyju did not consider him a threat. That was good. Nuparu had a brief thought about how easily Kyju could have him killed, saw in his mind's eye his own body horribly disfigured - but no, he regained his sense of purpose immediately. Onu-Koro needed a leader of its own kind, not a power-hungry giant, and Nuparu believed it was his duty to help that future leader to their rightful seat.

"You have been militarizing Onu-Koro," Nuparu said, still showing none of his processes or fears. "While the Ussalry is admittedly a strong force, simply duplicating a cavalry regiment is a very blunt strategy for making the Koro stronger. Fighting is for Ta-Koro. What we should be doing instead is turning, as a Koro, to our real affinities: mining and engineering. The wealth of the island is barely tapped, and not only lies in widget-metal. It lies in iron and copper, and in wood, and in lightstones. We would be much better applied to the advancement of technology and the construction of new machines than the continued pursuit of essentially ancient warfare."

IC. Kyju's Home.Nuparu saw a man blinded by his thirst for power. That concept blinded him more than any threat Kyju could imply. Though he was admittedly clever in his delivery and execution of his speech, Kyju looked deeper than his composure. After all, even very good liars could simply hide the truth. They could not obliterate it. He imagined Nuparu saw this like most things: a puzzle to be solved. Layers to peel back. Find what he assumed was there to find. So there was really only one way to counter it: let him find what he did not expect."Now, trust me, I beg, when I tell you that these thoughts have entered my mind. I have seen the fruits of my labors, and I have seen the worms they produce. So I ask you, though I may be of great stature, to find yourself my equal. I have traveled one path, and now I wish you to be my partner in traveling down another. You are more attuned to the thoughts of your peers, while I am a politician and can get things done."He could see a bit of confusion in Nuparu's eyes. The answer wasn't the one of the warmonger he may have expected. What he was accomplishing was simple. The militarization of Onu-Koro had never been his goal. Neither had becoming the most influential of men in his realm. He was already going down in history...now, he planned to change it. "Together, with the combined force of the Council, we can form Onu-Koro back to what it was always meant to be: a society based on the beliefs of the citizens. We can keep the law while focusing on mining and engineering."And so the trap is set.
