Spirits of the Ice (Link to Discussion, Link to Profiles)

It has long been a fact of life, to us, that what can go wrong will go wrong. And what went wrong for us, it went horribly wrong. Where before we were just a happy little farm island, now...now we're just trapped in some icy wasteland, snow as far as the eye can see...

How far is that?

About ten feet.

About four, maybe five hundred years ago was when it all fell apart. The island had been just farmland, then, exporting crops to those who'd come along to us, taking from them in exchange whatever we needed. Temperate, warm, a place where everybody could get along; the Ko-Matoran stuck to their mountaintops, Ta-Matoran and Fe-Matoran worked the forges, Ga-Matoran the docks, Po-Matoran and Le-Matoran and all the others worked the fields, Onu-Matoran constantly making new contraptions for them to use out there. Winter had been right around the bend, back then.

Well, winter came upon us faster than we'd been expecting it to. Froze almost everything, and the Ta- and Fe-Matoran could hardly keep their forges open due to a lack of fuel, and none of the Toa were able to help, because they were off trying to gather everybody back together, bring them back to the port city. It was obvious that the winter was going to be a hard one, and that it wasnt going to leave quite easily. A lot of us figured it was time to leave. As soon as we saw the boats frozen in place, with the ice steadily creeping further out to sea, we knew we were stuck.

We all camped out around the forges. Po- and Fe-Toa all helped build some more permanent structures, and a heating system, to get everything warm enough for life to keep going. Toa of Fire and Plantlife helped out to keep the forges and fireplaces all running, able to keep heating the settlement. Eventually, the Ko-Matoran and their ilk cleared a path on down to us, from their settlements. Told us that this winter wasn't going to let up anytime soon.

Back then I wasnt sure, but now I am: When they said that, it was almost as if they all had a smug expression, and some happy tone of voice. Like they wanted things to be like this. From that point on they led the searches for food and resources, helped to lead the two cities, both Forge Town - Ta-Karda they called it then, Heart of Fire, and their own up in the mountains, Ko-Metru. They were like spirits of the ice, able to do whatever was needed to keep us alive and running.

And I think they loved it. I think they were the ones who first suggested we rename the island Ko-Nui. Great Ice.

But I think we're almost due for a change of weather.

-Toa Maira, Year 523 of Winter, Journal Entry

Player Info

On the island that is now called Ko-Nui, about 500 years in the past a catastrophe occurred: the island was plunged into a mini ice age, with temperatures falling far below freezing on average. Due to this, Matoran, Toa, and Turaga of Ice came to hold most of the power over the island and its inhabitants, being the only ones with the natural ability to survive in these conditions; Ta-Matoran and their group fell to the bottom of the status quo, meanwhile, being nothing more than sapient heaters now. The other groups do what they can to survive, the few Skakdi on the island having taken up the mantle of hunters and trappers, catching whatever food they can to supplement what is grown in indoor-farms; Vortixx are extremely scarce, generally working with Onu- and Fe-Matoran to try and improve conditions. Most everybody else either works the indoor farms, works the forges - now to keep the heat going, with metal work being a side pursuit - or studies the weather, searching for patterns that could reveal any return to older, more temperate conditions...As it stands, though, food is starting to run a bit low. And a lack of food means an increase in fighting, something that seems about ready to kick up. As well, in some places, the weather seems to be warming up, though extremely slowly. In others, packs of Kavinika or groups of Frostelus are coming together, and they're giving the hunters some trouble - and the hunters say that they're coming closer to Ta-Karda each day.

Where You Come In

It's simple, really. It's up to the players to either maintain the status quo of the island, or to search for - and hopefully fix (or destroy) - that which has caused this localized ice age. The plot will be there, with a basic skeleton - but it'll be up to all of you guys to determine where it goes and how it all works out. Of course, it'll also be up to you to protect the towns, either from wild Rahi or groups within them trying to steal and hoard food, stuff like that.

Locations

Ko-Nui: The island itself, Ko-Nui is of roughly circular shape, though the south-eastern part of the island has a long, thin gulf running into it, almost to the center of the island; Ta-Karda resides right at the tip of it. From that gulf, a few islets spring out, reaching out almost to the edge of the island's ice-sheet. On the western side of the island is a large mountain range, and Ko-Metru is found built up in-between a space where three peaks converge, with the wealthiest living inside the hollowed out mountains.

Ko-Metru: The city of ice, and now the capital city of the island - if such a term could be used to describe it. Situated in between three mountains, the visible part of Ko-Metru is home to some of the less wealthy Ko-Matoran, Toa, and Turaga, and most of those of other elements who live there. Inside the mountains, meanwhile, is the largest portion of the city, where most everybody living in there lives in comfort. The only way into the visible city is through a treacherous pass between the north and east facing peaks, while the only way into the hidden portion of the city is through a cave entrance in the south-western oriented peak.

-Sub-Location: Administrative Palace/General Court: Where the island's main leadership meets and resides, and where any who wish to submit any sort of complaint or bill or suggestion or such must go in order to do so - as well as being where most criminal cases are tried. Open to the public as per executive order.

-Sub-Location: The Senate House: Surprisingly, not a political area, but rather a restaurant and bar in the middle of the city, where most of the social elite meet with each other - and where most others meet with each other in Ko-Metru, as well.

-Sub-Location: Ko-Metru Armoury and Guard Headquarters: Where the police force of Ko-Metru meets and resides (when not on duty in Ta-Karda), and where most prisoners are held until their trial can commence.

Ta-Karda: Originally the island's main trading hub and foundry town, Ta-Karda is now home to the majority of the island's inhabitants. Administrated by a Ko-Matoran governor, most who live there don't live in an excess of comfort. Conditions are spartan and heating costly, as most warmth is directed towards the indoor farms. Rather close set and with quite tall buildings - after all, heat rises - it is starting to sprawl outwards, and some of the buildings aren't kept in great repair. Its only a matter of time before one of them falls.

-Sub-Location: Indoor Farms: Heavily guarded, Ta-Karda's indoor farms are the main source of food for the island. This is where most who live in Ta-Karda work, and serves as a general social area as well.

-Sub-Location: The Barracks: A rather simple name for a rather simple place, this is where the guard force of Ta-Karda resides, and where most weaponry is stored and small-time prisoners are kept.

-Sub-Location: The Icicle Inn: Despite the unfortunate name - chosen by an innkeeper with a sick sense of humour - The Icicle is the premier bar and inn in Ta-Karda, rivaling the Senate House in Ko-Metru in terms of food quality and general warmth, as the building is well heated. Those able to afford the cost will stay here, in relative comfort, compared to the rest of Ta-Karda, and the poorer parts of Ko-Metru.

Game News

The Frostelus and Kavinika and other cold-adapted wild Rahi living near Ta-Karda and Ko-Metru both seem to be getting more restless as of late, and reports from travelling hunters have confirmed that they seem to be moving closer to the cities, and the more intelligent Frostelus seem to be indicating a wish to attack. The cities are preparing their defences as of the current time in-game.

Factions

There are really only two factions to this island and game. The group that wishes to maintain the status quo, and the group that wants to return things to where they were before. Of course, there are also those oddballs who want to flip the status quo upside down but not return things to the old days, and such; really, it all depends on what your character is like, what they want, and who they end up friends with.

Allowable Species

Matoran, Toa, and Turaga: The original inhabitants of the island and by far the largest group, Matoran - and their Toa and Turaga subspecies - are the ones who do most of the work on the island, and control most of it. The basic six elements - Fire, Air, Water, Stone, Earth, and Ice - have the largest representation, though the other types are rather common as well. Typically they live in the cities, though some few go out as hunters, trappers, and gatherers.

Skakdi: An originally savage-seeming race, easily angered and warlike, their tempers seem to have cooled with the island's weather. They don't fight with each other quite so much anymore, as more of their attention is devoted to survival; most of them live out in the wilderness, hunting and trapping whatever game is available, and coming back to Ta-Karda when they need to.

Vortixx: A tall, enigmatic race of inventors, Vortixx are extremely uncommon on the island. The few that can be found are some of the wealthiest living in Ta-Karda, though a small amount do live with the wealthiest in Ko-Metru. They generally work with the Fe- and Onu-Matoran to develop better technologies to make life easier on the island, though they generally resent the Ko-Matoran dominance, and some of them are propagating the theory that the island's ice age wasn't natural, but was rather caused by some technological creation.

Steltian (Sidorak's Species): Similar in height to Vortixx, the Steltians are a powerfully built species that were rather used to being the ones in control on their island. Similar to Skakdi, they could often be a warlike race, though now they've all banded together to try and survive, and if they can, throw off the Ko-Matoran dominance - and set themselves up as the rulers.

Steltian (Krekka's Species): While they aren't quite the matches of their brothers in height, the lower-class Steltians are definitely their match in strength. Often viewed as unintelligent brutes, perhaps due to their general employment as nothing but brute-strength providers, this isn't so - they have the same chances for intelligence or unintelligence as any other species. While their higher-class brothers resent the dominance of the Ko-Matoran, these Steltians manage to simply ignore it - and the cold - going about daily life as they can, either as hunters in the wilderness or workers in the cities, taking advantage of every opportunity possible to enhance their position. They generally separate themselves from the other Steltians.

Note - Custom species can be created, though they need to be rather well described, and you need to provide a reason as to why they might help flesh-out the game beyond "they're cool and provide another species."

Basic Profile Template

Name: You know the drill. Make it seem Bionicle-esque, no Joes or Yolo Swagginses and such.
Species and Gender: From the allowed species list, or make your own; you can't have anything else unless you can explain just why I should let you have it.
Appearance: At least thirty words. I want a good description of what they look like. Alternatively, you can supply a picture.
Kanohi: No legendaries, no Komau, no Suletu, no Olmak. Use common sense for anything else that might seem overpowered and it's alright; but if I see somebody abusing it, it's gone for everybody.
Weapons: You always need weapons, yep. Not really. But they're fun.
Gear: This is only if you really want to describe the stuff. Not required.
Abilities, Powers, and Skills: Like the appearance. At least thirty words.
Personality: Same as skills and appearance. I mean, c'mon now. You can't just describe somebody's personality with generalizations, can you?
Weaknesses: You can't have a character who isn't weak to something, and it has to be something specific, not just 'he'll die if he falls from too far of a height.'
Biography: Guess what? At least thirty words, yep.

Example/NPC Profiles

Name: Maira (Mah-ee-rah, for those wondering about the pronunciation. Three syllables.)
Species and Gender: Male Toa of Fire

Appearance: While before he had been a regal-appearing champion of the Matoran, over the years working the forges Maira has ended up a grizzled old Toa, with numerous scars and burn marks running along his armour, his heavy musculature (from manning the bellows a lot) shows rather prominantly. His armour is solid and of a bronzen colouration (actually plated with bronze, the base metal is black iron), though tarnished with age and soot. His mask is shaped rather like that of Lhikan's Hau.

Kanohi: Maira wields a bronze-coloured Kanohi Pakari, though wear and tear has led it to become tarnished, covered with soot, and as with his armour, the black base metal is beginning to show in places.

Weapons: Originally wielding a long-bladed steel saber, Maira has long since cut his weapon down to a more utilitarian cutlass length. Its hilt is of solid bronze, the same colour of his armour - of what his armour used to be, as he has generally kept his weapon in much better condition than his armour - and the blade is of similar length to a machete, gently curved and ending in a devastating spear point.

Gear: For regular gear, Maira has a heavy cloak and very thick general clothing, to maintain his body heat, as well as a general utility knife (similar to a bowie knife in shape), and a satchel to carry his food and any trinkets and such. And, of course, his sword's sheathe.

Abilities, Powers, and Skills: Though he hasn't had much opportunity to practice his combat skills, Maira is still a deft swordsman, though - in accordance with the Toa code - he will never strike to kill, not intentionally. On the other hand, he's never lost his skill with his element, as he's had to use it - and his physical strength, which is rather great even without the Pakari - almost every day since the winter first started.

Personality: Though he was never a lighthearted Toa, in the long years of winter Maira has gone from being simply a serious though sometimes-jovial Toa to being a bitter, cynical man. Still, he's never lost sight of the code that he has followed since he became a Toa, nor does he put himself before others; as well, he has never once allowed his goals and ambitions to be crushed like he has been.

Weaknesses: Obviously, Maira holds a weakness to the cold; being a Toa of Fire, he was never comfortable in it, but now, after having worked in the furnaces and forges for so many years, he's become so accustomed to warmth that if his clothing is removed and his element doused, he will rather quickly succumb to the cold - if he doesn't panic first.

Biography: Maira was one of the first inhabitants of the Matoran Universe, created by the Great Beings as a member of the species for which that universe was named, the Matoran. He wasn't native to Ko-Nui, instead living on an island far to the North; eventually, though, he made the transition to being a Toa, and left to find a land and people to protect. Eventually, he settled upon a small farm-island in the southern reaches of the domes, with a thriving, mid-sized population. He made quick friends with a couple natives of the island, a Fe-Turaga named Verrus who was the leader of those on the island, and a recently-transformed Toa of Ice named Kova. While Kova protected the Ko-Matoran in their mountainous community, Maira remained down in the lowlands, protecting the farmers and workers. However, once winter came about, Maira found himself trapped outside, searching for others to bring back to the dock city. Still, he managed to power his way through to the dock city, relying on his elemental abilities to keep himself and those he had saved alive - only to immediately be put to work upon arriving back at what had been renamed Ta-Karda, as one of those able to keep the bellows for the forges going. As the years passed, he saw his friend Kova become the head administrator of Ko-Metru, he watched Verrus succumb to the cold one day, no longer able to remain warm, and his outlook and general mood gradually changed to a bitter one, a smouldering anger fuelling him more as each day went on.

Name: Kova (Koh-vah)

Species and Gender: Male Toa of Ice

Appearance: Kova is of tall, thin appearance, seeming to be quite a bit older than he actually is, when one looks at the lines on his face, how dull and cynical his eyes seem to be, and his almost frail body. With a generally pale white body, his armour and mask are grey with ice-blue accents. rather lacking in scars and wear that might be expected of any other Toa's equipment.

Kanohi: Kova wears a Kanohi Hau, with removable polarized ice-blue coloured eye lenses; he generally wears those only when he has to go outside.

Weapons: Kova wields a single-handed sword, similar to an arming sword, though with a longer, thinner blade, with an unsharpened ricasso and a spur on the back edge of the weapon; it has a prominent teardrop-shaped pommel, a large finger ring, and an outward-curving knucklebow to protect the rest of his hand. It looks rather like this.

Gear: Kova has a general utility knife, similar to a seax, and a shorter version of that knife - with fork and spoon - for eating with. He also has general writing materials, a fountain pen, ink, a brush, and paper - either in cut sheets or large rolls. His only clothing is generally a heavy cloak, and he has a satchel - that varies as a backpack - to carry his items. As well, obviously, he has a sheathe for his sword.

Abilities, Powers, and Skills: Kova is trained well enough with his sword to protect himself for a short time, though that's it - he isn't much of a fighter. He prefers to use his sword or element to defend himself for a moment, and then get himself and whoever is with him away quickly, rather than to fight. As for his element, he can use it in either general, large applications, or small applications with quite a bit of finesse. Beyond that, though, he is an excellent administrator, able to keep Ko-Metru in a rather stable state, though his influence is limited in Ta-Karda. As well, his survival skills in the icy wilds are unparalleled by any on Ko-Nui.

Personality: First off, it must be said that justice, the preservation of order, and the preservation of life are two of Kova's main goals. If somebody has commited a bad enough crime or is threatening the lives of others around them, Kova will not hesitate to either kill them or have them killed if there is no other solution. He never hesitates to act as he sees he must, and while he doesn't rule with an iron fist, he doesn't let anybody have particularly free reign, either. He is rarely happy, as his work - and the conditions of those on the island - drain him quite a bit; the most anybody sees is a man as grim and icy as the world around him.

Weaknesses: Kova isn't a fighter, preferring diplomacy over battle, and won't last long in even a one-on-one duel. He's not strong, he's not fast, and he doesn't take hits well. Beyond that, he has made a few enemies and might make a few more, as his views on preserving order, life, and giving justice have caused him to both neglect the Toa code and show little mercy to those he feels have broken from what is a proper way to live.

Biography: A native of Ko-Nui and a rather young man compared to some others on the island, Kova was one of those who first helped to expand Ko-Metru into the mountains surrounding the original city, as a Matoran; once Verrus (the island's original Toa) became a Turaga, Kova was one of those transformed to a Toa to fill his place. From then on he undertook the task of protecting the other Ko-Matoran and those who lived in Ko-Metru with them, though he worried about those who lived down in the farmlands - he had noticed that winters in the mountains had grown progressively colder and longer over the years, and feared that whatever caused that problem might cause the harshest of the weather to spread out and encompass the entire island. Once his fears were realized, Kova - already a premier survivalist on the island, and a gifted leader - took control of Ko-Metru and the Ko-Matoran host, first embarking on a rescue mission to Ta-Karda. It was he who suggested that the Ko-Matoran first lead the island, though his intention wasn't for them to remain in their position forever; he appointed the first Ko-Matoran governor of Ta-Karda, and he suggested that Ta-Toa and the other stronger Toa help to keep furnaces going to provide heat, until a better solution might be found. However, quickly conditions started to deteriorate further, for both cities, and so Kova tightened his hold on Ko-Metru and grasped harder the leash with which he held the governer of Ta-Karda, bringing order to the island in order to better preserve the lives of those upon it and give justice to those who need and/or deserve it, causing the island's culture to become what it is today.

Important Notes

-Protosteel is a very rare material on Ko-Nui, and is not generally available. I don't expect many to use it.

-High technology, in terms of computers and robotics and stuff like that, is unavailable.
-If you are not careful, you will die. This is a dangerous world, with dangerous things living in it - don't think you're invincible. I'm a very sadistic GM when it comes to disproving such notions.

-The GM reserves the right to add notes / change the rules if it seems necessary

Rules

First off, it is highly recommended you read Friar Tuck's Guide to Common Sense, found in the Official BZPRPG Rules and Index. It's a good guide to what you can and can't get away with. After all, it's only common sense.

Anyways.

1. No Metagaming, God-Modding, or other such blatant misuses of your own power as a player. Depending on the severity of the event, punishment can range from a simple warning to immediate suspension from play.

2. Respect the staff. Currently, that only applies to me; regardless, if other people get hired on, respect them as well. We're/I'm trying to run a game to make you happy, and we aren't/I'm not always going to be able to do everything; just be patient, and don't argue overmuch with our/my decisions. If you think they're stupid, PM one of us/me and we'll/I'll try to explain things. Mmk?

3. Ya gots ta post ya profile a'fore ya play, y'know. Specifically, post in the RPG Discussion topic first, and only take one post in the profile topic. And please, just follow what was already established with the basic template. You can use different profile templates if you want - I don't much care - but really, everything allowable is already shown. Don't make things hard on me by making me have to tell you no. Just make it easy so I can always tell you "yes."

4. The Miscellaneous Rule - remember the IC and OOC, remember to follow BZP's and the RPG Forum's rules, respect each other, all that good stuff. Stuff you all already know.

Punishments for violations will range from warnings to complete bans, determined on a case-by-case basis. But you're all good folks, right? A'course ya ares, ya gots ta be. <3 Anyways, I dearly hope that all of you who join will have a good time playing the game - I worked hard on it, and I hope you guys will like it just as much as I do. ^.^

I could hear wind outside. A cold wind, more than likely full of snow and more cold. Just hearing it made me shiver.

And the fact that I was cold made me shiver, too. I should really keep my cloak on.

I stared out of my window, out onto the street, and shivered a bit more. I guess my heater turned off or something. I'm not sure, but whatever happened it got cold in my small apartment. I sighed, and looked around for my cloak. After a few minutes, I finally grabbed it, and smiled to myself. It didn't take as long as usual! Then again, I didn't have many shiny things in my room to distract me any more. I put the cloak on, and felt warmer than before. I was going to have to talk to someone about my heater. Maybe it broke. Or froze.

A frozen heater...that's ironic, isn't it?

I shook my head, trying to clear some thoughts away. And, as usual, I reminded myself that it didn't work. Yes, I'm aware shaking my head doesn't clear my head, me. Why do I keep doing it? I have no idea, stop asking questions me.

I pulled the cloak on a bit tighter, and made sure that my dagger was safely tucked away. And it was. My disc launcher was strapped to my back, and I had enough discs, too. I was ready for...something, at least.

Really, I only carried around this stuff because it's shiny.

I stepped out into the street, and was greeted by a very cold blast of air. 500 years later, and I'm still not used to this cold. Whatever. I guess I could just look around Ko-Metru. At least I wasn't in that really, really, really seedy part of town. Just the average part.

It was...kinda dull, really.

OOC: Xaron open for interaction in the main area of Ko-Metru, in between the mountains.

"Honeyyyyy I'm home!" I cried enthusiastically as I entered the home of someone who was definately not my Honey in any shape or form. I was actually in my neighbor's house, whose name just so happened to be Kova. We never really talked much, mostly because it was hard to get him to talk back, but I was trying very hard!

"You know it's rude to ignore a guest when she enters your home!" I huffed.

Kova, head administrator of Ko-Metru, and as such essentially the ruler of the island of Ko-Nui, was currently looking a few important documents. Food output in Ta-Karda was low, dangers from wild Rahi and such seemed to be mounting - he'd already set the guards in both cities on the island towards preparing for a possible large attack - weather patterns (in terms of which blizzards came with which winds and when) seemed to be shifting again, which could throw things off for a while, and a recent blizzard that had blown through had left enough snow to collapse a few poor worker's roofs out in the visible Ko-Metru. All issues that it fell on Kova's shoulders to deal with.

However, after hearing his door slam shut and a rather energetic girl step into his study, where he was working, Kova noticed that he had a more immediate issue to work with.

"How do you keep getting in here."

IC: Rezha (The Senate House)

My teeth spent the next minute or so grinding the miniscule meal I'd been served into paste before I swallowed the whole thing in one go. I then found myself looking down at the empty plate in dissatisfaction. This recent food shortage was unnerving, not to mention the recent reports (which yours truly had contributed to, of course) about Rahi advances. I almost considered finding a partner for my next hunt.

Almost.

"I shouldn't have to," Kova replied. "Perhaps if you would stop breaking the law just so you could come and pester me for half an hour, all our problems would leave us." Sighing, the Toa of Ice turned about in his chair, stopping when he was looking straight at Inicara. After a moment, he gestured for the fellow Toa to take one of the other chairs in the study.

"So, is there any important business you have, or is this just a social call?"

[iC - Methroda] - [Ta-Karda] - [The Icicle Inn]

The bar at the Icicle Inn was always swarming with the activity of those seeking to drown out there sorrows, and findng an empty seat was never an easy task - most had to move to the other seats present (which, truth be told, were probably cleaner, but just didn't feel as right). This was especially true when one of the chairs had held the same Matoran for well over two hours. In contrast with the norm, however, Methroda was not facing inwards; instead, she was faced away, to the door, as she watched patrons enter and exit.

Reaching her hand back, she reached her hand back and tapped the bar. Reaching into her pack, she pulled out a few widgets and placed them on the table. A few seconds later, and she had another bottle in her hand, which she immediately drowned down half of before slamming it back down and leaving it resting behind her. The patron to her right reached for it, only to be slapped out of the way as she continued staring.

So far, mostly just common workers and laborers, or guards and the like she had already tried to convince. No, she needed someone a tad better off than that. Someone she could get to go along with her on her newest job prospect...

[iC - Saceron] - [Ta-Karda]

Meanwhile, outside that same inn, another figure walked silently through the streets of Ta-Karda, attempting to take in this new area of the city. However, whereas other residents entered into the bar, she continued walking down the streets - drinking was not her interest right now. She was heading elsewhere.

[iC - Getedor] - [Ko-Metru] - [The Senate House]

"These growing Rahi advances are a disaster!"

The hunter which spoke those words slammed his mug into the table with pretty heavy force, provoking a number of dirty looks from the corner of the bar where the wealthier patrons were sitting.

"Rahi don't just attack for no reason." was the response from his current discussion partner - Getedor; artist, duelist, and (if the island was not so frozen over) a Rahi's rights activist. Only one of those things did that Matoran hunter respect, and slight slice to his mask which, for a Toa, would have rendered it useless, was enough of an identifier for that. "Something is manipulating them. Your constant hounding of them is just making them more agitated, and it won't end the problem. You need to stop them at the source."

"Yeah. Sure." the hunter responded as he got up from his seat. "I bet you're blaming the frostelus again, eh?"

"Just you wait and see." Getedor replied. "If it's not them, its something else like that. And they're the ones we need to be targeting."

While the hunter was now leaving, their discussion had been loud enough to attract some attention towards that table, inviting anyone else to follow up where the matoran had left off.

OOC: All three characters open to interaction.

As he had been for the last five hundred years, Maira was cold. Cold to the bone, almost; his inner heat and the amount of layers he wore could do little to protect him from what little cold managed to seep into Ta-Karda's canvas or metal covered walkways, walkways turned to halls as the center of the city became one large building, and as every other building was starting to be connected to the web...as well, he could hardly find the strength, some days, to tramp through the cold outside even those covered walkways, where snow always blanketed the ground, where great winds nearly always blew...where he could find no protection at all. More than that, though, he was becoming emotionally cold. As the lack of heat outside deadened his senses, his body, it slowly replaced his emotion with itself. He was bitter, and he could little find the energy to allow any other emotion to take place, leaving that one to reign supreme...

Some days, though, he could make it somewhere warmer than the furnaces where he worked. The Icicle inn, despite the name one of the warmest places in Ta-Karda, some days he had saved up enough money to buy himself a few drinks and a good meal there. He almost invariably sat alone - since Verrus's death, he didn't particularly wish to deal with anybody, and since Kova had taken near-absolute control of the island...he'd decided to limit his social interaction to the bare minimum. Most people wouldn't want to deal with him, the same as he wouldn't want to deal with them. It all worked out.

So the Toa of Fire walked through the halls, a thick cloak wrapped about him, concealing any details of his body and concealing his sword as well. He passed by some Toa of Water on his way to the inn, passed by a small huddle of frost leeches hiding in the shadows of the place - annoying little pests, they were, sucking away what little excess heat there was - before stepping into the warm atmosphere of the Icicle Inn, and ducking into the bar. While most people had trouble finding seats, it wasn't hard for Maira. He had a seat reserved. It looked like the most uncomfortable seat in the entire place, on the far left side of the bar...it probably was, if one sat in it just as it was. But, when you had a nice thick cloak to fold up and use to sit upon it, it ended up rather comfortable to sit upon. He made a beeline for that spot, sitting down and waving the bartender over. First, though, before he could order a drink - there was a Matoran sitting next to him, who hadn't taken her eyes off of him since he stepped in.

"You know, it isn't quite safe for a Matoran to run around here alone," Maira growled. "Especially not a Le-Matoran as small as yourself."

Upon hearing Inicara's short outburst, Kova frowned. Closing his eyes, he proceeded to use an old trick that many Ko-Matoran used to stop themselves from getting too angry: He started counting. Thankfully, with Inicara, it didn't take him too long to quell his anger to the point that he could speak relatively normally; turning around, he faced the standing Toa of Ice with a cool gaze, his fingers laced across his stomach.

"Inicara, I was sincere in my wish not to have you die, the same as I am with everybody," he said, the tone of his voice as flat as was his stare. "I would assume you know well enough to protect yourself in the cold. And as things are, I cannot prevent you from leaving if you wish to do so, nor would I wish to stop you from leaving. Not because I want you gone, but because I feel I've limited others enough in terms of their freedoms." He stood, walking to the door with a stride so stiff it appeared almost completely mechanical, before he opened it, gesturing out in the hall. "If you want to leave, leave with my blessing; if you wish to stay, stay with my blessing. But do not act so childish as to complain when I say as little on the matter as I do for any other."

I was unusually silent as Kova spoke, it was rare when he said more than a few words at a time, at from my point of view.

"W-Well...you could have said that in the first place!" I complained stubbornly, then I started walking toward the door, not looking at Kova.

Not gonna cry not gonna cry nopenopenope... "...goodbye...I'll...I'll miss you!" With that I ran out of the door, not stopping for anything.

Kova sighed, as Inicara ran out, obviously holding back tears. It wasn't a particularly unexpected reaction, but it certainly wasn't one he was wanting to try and work with. As one of his aides came in, wondering what had happened, he handed the person a coat and a note. "Run after Inicara, and make sure she doesn't hurt herself," he said to the now even-more-confused aide. "And make sure to give her this coat. I'd rather not watch her freeze." The aide nodded, running off after Inicara, to give her the coat and the short note that Kova had written.

"You're not the first person to tell me that." she replied, with a smirk. Her voice had an air of confidence as she said, "You probably won't be the last, either. Just goes to show you don't know me very well."

As with all of the others entering the inn, she had quickly inspected Maira. Big, seemingly strong, with a useful mask ability by all appearances (though she supposed that Hau might have the powers of water breathing or something), and a toa - not just that, a toa of fire. With toa not exactly be a common thing, this might be perfect.

"Though for your information, I usually don't run alone." she replied. "Or at the very least, I didn't used to. In fact, that's the reason I'm here - I find myself in need of some help with a particular job. One that, with a little luck, will be quite lucrative. And before you go accusing, it's not criminal."

Kova, meanwhile, went back to work for the moment, moving back to some of the reports he'd been given. Farther out in the street, though, as the aide handed Inicara the note, she would read:

You know, if you want to stop by the Senate House later and grab something warm to drink before you leave - or just stop back here - I am fine with it. Just please don't break my locks again, okay?

I practically squealed as I read the letter, but I then contained myself when I realised the aide was still there. "Um...yes. Thank you." I quickly scribbled something on the back of the note and handed it to the aide. "Give Kova this."

With that out of the way I started heading toward home. I needed to get prepared for when I went to the Senate House, I wanted to look my best. I figured I could delay my adventure for a few hours.

"Just you wait and see." Getedor replied. "If it's not them, its something else like that. And they're the ones we need to be targeting."

"Frostelus are certainly one of the smarter Rahi around" a sharp voice cut in, the originator of which was currently hiding her face (well, half of it) behind a mug as she emptied the contents.

I looked the two mooks over, noting the scratch one of them had across his mask; the mark of a hunter who could make it with the best of them. The other one was an oddity, though I didn't lend much thought to how exactly he was an oddity. I didn't have time for that.

"It's not that simple, I'm afraid." Getedor replied to the Skakdi huntress. "Frostelus are not rahi. Rahi fight with claws and hides; not with mechanical devices. If their armor is anything to go by, they may be just as intelligent as we are."

His eyes seemed to stare vacantly away, as though he were lost in thought. After a few silent moments, he gave his head a shake and turned back to Rezha. "You're right in saying that this sort of behavior is unprecedented, but put two and two together here. Frostelus on the attack, and rahi which usually aren't so hostile both on the attack. If that isn't a link, I don't know what else could be!"

I took my time responding, pretending like I was finishing the last drop of nonexistent water from my mug.

As I plonked it down, refusing to give any sort of contented sigh or the like to keep up my bluff, I looked the "gentleman" in the eyes.

"You might actually be on to something there," I admitted, "On one of my recent hunts I spotted Kavinika tracks en masse way out of their usual territory, like something was compelling them to act abnormally"

Kova looked interestedly at the note he was provided with when the aide came back, reading a quickly scrawled message:

Don't break my heart and we have a deal :3

Kova - despite all evidence that he wouldn't normally do so - chuckled slightly, setting the note aside. First, to finish reading through the reports, and supply some short comments on them; next, he would clean up a bit and go to the Senate House.

***

A couple hours later, Kova, his shoulders hunched up in his cloak to protect his face from the wind, arrived at the door to the Senate House, stepping inside and waiting Inicara to do what he would normally expect her to - which would be to pop up right next to him and probably mildly scare him.

***

Maira gave a small snort of amusement at what the Matoran sitting next to him said. "And what would this job of yours be, little one?"

Kova raised an eyebrow in slight surprise (as he was often wont to do) as Inicara popped up, hugging him about the waist. He patted the girls hands, silently disengaging them from where they were, and pulling her up to his side where he could see her. Smiling at his fellow Toa he turned his head, and looked over the rest of the inn. There were a few people talking, but there were also a few tables off to the side, where privacy was pretty much ensured.

"Have you picked out a spot already?" he asked, not particularly willing to head off that way unless Inicara was fine with it.

IC [icicle Inn]:

Novvah, Turaga of Air, has been travelling through the icy world. On another recruiting journey to spread words of the Phantoka, Novvah seeks people worthy and "useful" for the organization, composed of another two Turaga from his village Le-Koro and a handful of Le-Matoran and Bo-Matoran. The Spirits of the Air is full of ambition, aiming to bring his fellow Le-people back to the old glorious days where Le-Koro serve as a major village for Rahi herding and most importantly, respect and friendship from its Ko-Metruan neighbor. Ever since that great blizzard, he can feel the chilly smirks of disgust and discriminating glares from those frozen-heads rising in number and intensity. He simply can not allow that to happen; he knows that his people deserved better, and he's willing to do anything to achieve that goal.

There's only one problem: in order to persuade Ko-Nui, you need military strength, enough influence, money, and fame. Lots and lots of 'em. The Phantoka is ambitious, but merely at its infancy. Even though money was never an issue for him (his Rahi business back as a Matoran made him wealthy enough to support a political committee, after all.), Novvah doubted that outsiders would view them seriously... especially when the strongest member in the entire organization is a Turaga long passed his prime. That's the reason why he had decided to step his foot in the Icicle Inn. He is seeking for someone who hated this god-forsaken winter. And maybe those stuck-up Ko-Matoran.

Luckily to him, he found a Toa of Fire locked in a conversation with a Le-Matoran. Seeing a fellow Le-person made him delighted; through possible manipulation of hatred emotion against the Ko-Matoran he can probably succeed to make the Le-Matoran to convince a Toa to join his political petition.

"Why, jolly days, a fellow Spirit of the Air!" He exclaimed, trying to sound as care-free as possible, approaching the two. "Have you, oh my dear Le-Matoran, ever heard of the rightful campaign of the Phantoka?" Novvah's eye fixed clearly fixed upon the Le-Matoran stranger, trying to show that he is not at all interested of the Toa of Fire's presence. After all, it's easier to gain hearts if someone felt that he or she was important to the speaker....

Methroda was just about to reply to Maira when the newcomer showed up. She gave an awkward smile as she said, "Uh... sorry guy, I don't really do politics. I'm more for the whole getting things done vibe, you know?"

She glanced back to Maira - she didn't want to lose a chance at gaining the toa as an ally - but never completely dropped attention directed at Novvah (there was something dishonest about people who stared that hard). She then asked, quieter than before, "How would you feel about a little expedition outside the city limits?"

"I wouldn't have any issue with it," Maira replied, "So long as you told me just what it was we'd be doing." The Toa of Fire then turned, looking back at the Turaga who had so recently accosted his conversational partner. His eyes looked the man up and down quickly, and he snorted in annoyance.

"You know, most people consider it rude to interrupt conversations like that," he said, somewhat gruffly.

Laer'dus sits in silence outside of the Administrative Palace. It's like him to show up early.

His mind was on the Frostelus, as it had been for the last week. "Curious little subjects..." he thought out loud. Laer'dus had a theory about the Frostelus; as part of their nature, the creatures disliked heat, and there had to be a reason they were closing in on Ta-Karda. Perhaps it's the last bits of fuel or perhaps it's the inhabitants themselves... Regardless of which(or perhaps something else entirely), Multiple tribes of Frostelus attacking Ta Karda simultaneously could be catastrophic.

Not that it would disappoint Laer'dus in the slightest. *Laer'dus snickers to himself* Catastrophic events never cease to amuse...

OOC: I'm open for interaction. Perhaps a council meeting for how to deal with Frostelus?

Ever since them winter came, we've suffered much of discrimination from them Icy-Heads, not to mention fallin' into that dark hole of low social hierarchy status. It ain't about that silly money-and-speech approach, it's them of equality, righteousness, and lettin' us people of the Air back to where we use to be!" Novvah exclaimed, with passion and confidence. He need more. A Toa, to be exact, and he's gonna cling on.

Ignoring the Toa of Fire's annoyed tone, he offered. "I hope you don't mind an old geezer join' your little frolickin' by the countryside eh? We have much to talk about! Don't you ever cared about how sad our situation is? We Spirits of the Air have been ignored for too long, way too long. "Really, guy, that doesn't sound like so great of an idea. I'm not proposing just a simple walk around the countryside. The job I have is a rather lengthy trek along the coast to the southwestern area of the island, to an old settlement that was abandoned when the ice came in. Snatch and grab for a few items, and then out. Simple enough, to be honest, but...."

With a worried look, she said, "You hardly look the type to be out there." Looking back to Maira, who she had peroidically been glancing at, she said, "You, on the other hand... what's a little cold to a big, strong toa who can melt things with his brain? Zinyn saw the tall buildings of Ta-Karda appear dimly as the blizzard died down a little bit. He fiddled around underneath his robe and pulled the knife from his left arm, kneeling down to touch the snow beneath his with the blade. An icy path formed ahead of him, almost immediately covered over by snow. That was fine, at least he had a sure walkway beneath it. He was running low on some of his supplies, and an available heatstone wouldn't be unwelcome to have as well. He didn't want to be in Ta-Karda, but food needed to be had or he could be stuck in a very tight spot the next time the blizzards hit hard out on the ice.

Taking a deep breath, Zinyn put a foot onto the pathway and continued his march toward what remained of the Ta-Karda harbor.

Kova resisted the urge to sigh as he saw the table he was being led to. Best seat in the house must be a subjective thing, then... Of course, after Inicara playfully turned him about and walked over towards where Kova had originally planned to go just when he had resigned himself to the fact that he'd have to sit near some loud group of people, he looked over, legitimately surprised.

A long, deep breath, sucking away a puff of cold air, and letting a puff of hot air replace it. That was all he had to show for his aspirations.

Dracax snorted, kicking a small pebble with his armored boot. He had gone out here to look for any signs of what the Rahi might be up to, or perhaps more preferably find a hunter to ask, it was their job to know such things, after all.

The snowfall didn't bother him, it had stopped doing so about four hundred years ago, but it did irritate him, and immensely at that, for it only served to remind him of the fate his people had been wrought with.

A snow crystal settled on his shoulder, where it immediately disappeared in a puff of frothing heat.

IC: Zinyn

As Zinyn neared the location cynically called the shore by the people who used to have functional boats, he saw a Ta-Toa take shape. They wouldn't cross paths, but he certainly hoped the Toa would change his course. This area may have been known as the Ice Sheet, but centuries years of snow had long since buried the original ice layer, and the stability of the snow of yesterday was questionable at best. Trackers always renewed their path markers, and Toa of Ice always made new ones. By Zinyn's guess, this Toa wasn't following tracker flags. He paused, shook himself, and called out,

"If you move a few feet to your right, you can use the path I've made. It isn't very..." he'd meant to continue with 'safe out here,' but his voice petered out with his meager social courage.
