Toy Fair 2014: Star Wars

LEGO and Star Wars are celebrating fifteen years of partnership this year, and they have a great lineup of sets to commemorate the anniversary. From the classic trilogy to the new Rebels TV show, there's a little bit of everything. LEGO and Disney just want to steal more of my money, so if you don't want to spend some of your own, don't read on! (But seriously, you should go check out the sets.)

Honestly I think the structure of the Cantina set is beautiful. It already folds closed so the exterior shape is more or less the same as it should be, albeit without a solid roof. I don't think you could conceivably make it any bigger or more exact without it beginning to look excessively spacious and repetitive (since other than a roof, you'd mainly be adding more and more chairs).

Some people on other sites have criticized the absence of certain figs, most notably the barkeep, whose absence is very conspicuous since the bar is so detailed and elaborate. But the set does already have eight minifigures, and I think the ratio of bricks to minifigures wouldn't be as good if you threw in the barkeep, the Imperial spy, or the two thugs who threaten Luke at the bar. Perhaps the barkeep could have been added in place of one of the band members.

I don't like the new Dewback as much as the old one, since the old one used more versatile parts to achieve a similar look. The opening mouth is nice, but I'm sad that the legs and tail no longer move. And I think its contours are a bit more realistic than they need to be — I'd rather if there were some slightly more well-defined edges on the back.

I quite like the design of the AT-AT, though I haven't gone and compared what details have changed since the previous ones. It's definitely nicer than the old one I had back in 2003, though!

The new Star Destroyer is better-proportioned than the last minifigure scale one, and it opens up quite nicely using some of the newer hinge elements. I love the mini holographic Emperor!

The Advent Calendar (spoilers!) is quite nice also. I won't go item by item to address the Rebels sets or the sets that are already out, but they are generally quite nice designs. The Episode III sets are definite improvements over the previous versions.

What? I think the new dewback looks much more accurate and natural than the old one, many times more superior.

Even though I already have 2005's wheelbike set, this one looks so much more detailed and awesome, so it's a must-have for me.

The only other must-have is the Snowspeeder, as an old friend of my bought me and older version of one for my birthday when I was quite young, but I somehow lost it and now only have one of the minifigures and a radar dish left. $29.99 is pretty expensive, considering I can pick up the older snowspeeders for $15-20 on eBay, but this one does look a bit cleaner.

Steam Name: Toa Hahli Mahri. Xbox Live Gamertag: Makuta. Minecraft Username: ThePoohster.

Wants: 2003 Jaller (from Jaller and Gukko), Exo-Toa, Turaga Nuju, Turaga Vakama, Shadow Kraata, Axonn, Brutaka, Vezon & Fenrakk, Nocturn, ORANGE FIKOU.

I got rid of my picture, are you happy?

The Jedi Scout Fighter and AT-AT both look like really cool sets to me. The Star Destroyer is pretty impressive too.

And Santa Vader...there's something I thought I wouldn't see in a Star Wars Lego set. But I actually like it a lot. I may pick it up if I see it in store someday down the line.

Everyone is one choice away from being the bad guy in another person's story.

LEGO continually impresses us with their marvels of brick engineering and making something look amazing with few parts!

Seeing that I'm currently in Italy, I kind of have early access to these sets, I got my dad the Millenium Falcon microfighter, and it is absolutely adorable! I plan on picking up the X-Wing and Star Destroyer as well.

Accurate and natural is good, but I feel like LEGO creatures should still be simplified/abstracted to a certain degree if they are to fit in with the blocky minifigure characters. Now, I do like that the new one has printed eyes. But the shaping of the body is a bit more detailed than I tend to prefer (the legs are fine aesthetically, even if they don't have any articulation). I suppose it's not really a big deal here.

Who else thinks that the Red Vader Helmet prototype would go well with the Santa-Vader minifig?

ok the cantina set is all well and good but the question is who shot first?

It's Lego! You decide who shoots first!

In all seriousness, I've seen the set displayed multiple ways at the various Toy Fairs, with some featuring Han shooting first and some featuring Greedo shooting first.
