Black Six
To start off, let me be clear and say that everything that follows is completely optional and if you don't want your BZPower and Facebook accounts to be connected no one is forcing you. With that out of the way, this evening we have enabled what Invision terms as 'Facebook Connect' on BZPower. The main reason for doing so is that so potential members can register using their Facebook account, speeding the process along and making it easier for them to join. It is part of our continuing efforts to bring BZPower into the modern times and keep us relevant and get new people to join. It has the added side effect of allowing existing members to associate their Facebook account with their BZPower account, as you can see in your settings. As far as I'm aware, your Facebook account and your real name will not be linked or displayed anywhere publicly if you do this. You will, however, be able to use your Facebook picture as your avatar and either import your Facebook statuses to BZPower or export your BZPower statuses to Facebook. Again, all of the above is optional and if you're not a fan you can just ignore it. You have to manually opt in if you want to take advantage of the new features. I think this will be a useful addition moving forward and overall will be a big benefit to BZPower. Thanks! 4 Quote Bio of a BZP Admin
Aanchir
I was just about to go to bed and was checking Twitter when I saw the BZPower Twitter account mention this, and I was like, "Hold the phone!" Now, reading about this, it doesn't seem all that impressive. I mean, I pretty much never use the status on my profile whatsoever, and I don't know if I'd want everything in my Facebook statuses cross-posted here or vice-versa. Especially when it doesn't give my real name or Facebook links here so it's not really helping me to connect with friends on a deeper level than I already am. I am still keen on trying this out and seeing if I might be able to make use of it, though! 1 Quote Latest MOC: PAIGE (Prototype Artificial Intelligence, Gynoid Expression)
Voxumo
Can we also unlink it at some point if we decide we don't like it? Bambi
What if our Facebook avatar exceeds 100KB and people choose to use it here? Quote [my blog] [custom emotes]
-Windrider-
What if our Facebook avatar exceeds 100KB and people choose to use it here? I'm a bit of a stranger to how all of this works, but I would bet that there's an intermediary resizing/scaling process that happens when the Facebook picture is imported. Someone would have to test it out. If it happens that a >100 kB image on Facebook corresponds to a >100 kB avatar on BZPower, then such photos couldn't be used in order to comply with the Signature and Avatar Guidelines. Voltex
Sounds interesting, and should definitely help with new members. I'll personally probably not use the feature; I don't know BZP folks well enough (most anyways), and I also don't want to be explaining the intricate details of why I'm here to those I know IRL. Meiko
Can we also unlink it at some point if we decide we don't like it?Yes, after associating the Facebook account to your BZPower account, there is a button to disassociate the Facebook account as well (it's Facebook terms of use for third party apps using Facebook's open graph API). I don't think I'll use this but I've associated my accounts for the heck of it anyways. I probably won't ever have the statuses between sites being synced because I don't really post the same stuff on either, and my Facebook friends probably don't care at all what I post here (most of them are either IRL friends or acquaintances from my affiliations in other online LEGO communities), and I don't think too many BZPower people care much about my personal life or other miscellaneous stuff I share with my Facebook friends (but heck if you do, just shoot me a friend request or follow me on Twitter). Toa Smoke Monster
I don't know if I'll do this or not. I'll have to think about it. But it sounds like a neat idea. Reznas
I'm glad to see this implemented. It saves the hassle of filling out registration info for New Members (I actually prefer filling out info, but most prefer a quick and easy registration ). -Rez
Art Vandelay
I'm just about to do this at an IPB forum of mine in hopes to get all of our FB page likes translated into forum users. Glad you decided to do it here. It should really open up to a new audience, which is very much needed right now. Kudos to you guys for rolling out these updates so quickly. Mr. Cup of Fail
This is a really good idea for BZP in my opinion and I may going to be using the easy way to log in but it's really slow to do (or that maybe just the computer I am using). Also I think a good idea is to make a option to put your facebook on your profile, so people will know who you are on facebook if you want them to know and I good place to put it is under your profile picture.
