New ideas for Kanohi Mask powers?

Recommended Posts

I don't know if this thread should be here, but this is one of the few places I could think of to put it. If someone can find a more fitting place for it to be, feel free to move it.

Anyway... In Nova Orbis, I've been bringing various masks from the Matoran universe into use, but I also want to create new masks for the new characters to use. I've come up with a few ideas, but... not enough. However, you guys have come up with some amazing ideas!

For example, there's the mask of farsight. This mask was created by BZPower member Toa-Onaku, which will be worn by Toa Venti. Of course, it allows the user to see super-duper far away. It's simple, but it's perfect for a Toa of Air.

Then there's the mask of elemental embodiment, which transforms (certain) Toa's bodies into their element! This was inspired by Mace3739 on Deviantart. I do not know if they are a member, here. If you are, speak up! Here's to you.

Of course, I've come up with some ideas of my own for masks. One I'm looking forward to using is the mask of density, which one can use to make one's body as heavy as a mountain (in which case, it takes lot out of the user just to support their own body weight, and they can only do so for a few seconds), or as light as a feather.

Anyway, I'm surprised I haven't found a topic like this before on this site, but here goes! What are your ideas for new mask powers? What powers do you think would've been so cool to see in Bionicle, but that never were? If you'd like, I could feature them in the Nova Orbis story, depending on which characters they'd be fitting to be worn by, like Toa Venti with the mask of farsight.

I know I'm kinda fishing around for ideas, but hey, Nova Orbis is something made for all Bionicle fans, and I want to let Bionicle fans be a part of it. Besides, if your ideas are better than mine (and I'm sure more than a few of them are), I really wanna hear them.

See this thread. Not exactly the same but it's got some relevant conversation.

Also feel free to take a look at this, my Kanohi notepad.

I really like the Mask of Embodiment idea, and to a slightly lesser extent the Farsight one.

Ooooohhhhh, these are great. You could have a whole team of villains with the masks of lethargy, disorientation an' whatnot.

If I may ask, what was the inspiration for the names? Most of the names of characters and previously unnamed masks in Nova Orbis I've derived from Latin words, and a few are Maori and Finnish.

I came up with all the names, really, just picking something that sounded neat for each one. For that reason there's absolutely no common theme or origin language.

Mask of weather control? Or maybe for more evil users a mask of insanity? Or how bout a mask of energy absorption, which automatically absorbs energy from the surrounding area, or energy blasts from enemies and stores it, to "recharge" the user later on, or even let the user harness it and use it against his adversary? :D

What, you mean Makuta Hunt? Actually, I used only existing mask powers and existing Makuta powers. No need to give the Makuta extra abilities, they're overpowered as it is. :P

Hmmm... I had an interesting one, how about the mask of Perspective?

It would change the relative interpretation of time for the user or target by speeding up or slowing down thought processes. Uses would include giving you more reaction time, and reducing it for your opponent. I'm sure someone could think up more uses for such a mask, but that's what I have off the top of my head. :P

I was going to use that kind of mask down the line, but it'll be called the mask of perception. This will be an immoral mask used to make opponents sluggish in a fight.

I can't think of any reason why that power would be immoral, unless it was affiliated with the Brotherhood of Makuta. Slowing down someone's perception of time is a quick way to win a fight, yeah, but it's not a morally dubious action whatsoever.

Well, it's basically cheating. Sure, you could say that all mask powers kinda do that, but this is about actively disabling the opponent so they can't even fight. It's taking advantage of them.

I don't quite think Perspective would be the best name for that... Perspective makes me think of sight or worldview, not reaction time. I do have a Mask of Bullet Time in my Kanohi notepad, which is similar.

Perception was the word I was looking for, not perspective :P

I have two ideas, one is used by Toa Mariki Nubai I posted a little while ago;

Mask of Bonding: Can sense somebody's location (if bonded to the person beforehand) anywhere within the user's universe/dimension (not see, but sense, meanng that she would know in what direction she'd have to go in when finding said person. The user willknow specifically where the other person is if the user was there before) Also, can instantly sense if the bonded person(s) are in danger.

The other is the Mask of Lifeforms/lifesignes: Can detect, identify and analyze lifeforms (both organic and inorganic, as long as its just alive) This Kanohi has very strong medical uses.

How about a Mask of Catalysis? It could speed up or slow down chemical reactions.

Why not a mask made from the "weaken" kanoka? lt would of course have the ability to decrease the strength of a target like the kanoka from wich it would be made from.

I really like that idea, I loved that the Kanoka were basically Kanohi-like projectiles that even Matoran could use, and it would make sense for the masks built from em to have the same power :)

I had made it up beforehand for a reaction-based OC. If you think about it, the mask can do more then super-rusting. It can burn metal(Providing the metal can rust and is in water), and lots of other stuff.

It's all but confirmed canon that those masks would exist somewhere in the MU, because it's rather obvious one should be able to use a Weaken disk to make a Weaken mask of some sort, just like you use a Teleportation disk to make a Kanohi Kualsi or a Shrink disk to make a Kanohi Pehkui. Regenerate is confirmed to be the disk power used for Kiril, and Bomonga wore a Mask of Growth (Enlarge). We can assume that it would be possible to make masks of Remove Poison, Freezing and Reconstitute at Random as well, but that perhaps other things does the job better - such as an herb for curing poison, or a Mask of Elemental Ice if one exists. Possibly adding something like Regenerate to stabilize a Reconstitute mix would result in a Mask of Shapeshifting or Mutation, right?

For powers that have not been used, I imagine we could take the typical RPG status effect of "blink", "blur", "improved dodge", whatever, and toss it into a Mask of Making You Blink Rapidly On The Spot So People May Not Hit You. Or use a Mask of Intangibility, probably simpler. :P

Since we have a Mask of Charisma, a Mask of Mind Control and a Mask of Mind Reading we should probably have a Mask of Emotions as well. It's be like Fear and Anger and stuff all rolled up in one mask. If we have a Mask of Summoning which pulls creatures in at random, and a Disk of Teleportation which tosses you to a random location, then that might pave the way for a weaponized Mask of Dismissal (Forced Random Teleport) as well.

As has been said above, likely all powers we've seen can be replicated as masks, since all of the powers originate from protodermis anyways. The Mask of Conjuring even lets you make your own power, like a computer programmer working with source code. As long as protodermis can do it, it could be a power. The Expanded Multiverse and Chro's notepad up there already has several rather good ideas; and I notice several are adaptations of powers that already exist in MU canon.

Here are some ideas of mine; sorry if any have already been mentioned. I forget exactly which I've read and which I've come up with. :)

Mask of Vocal Mimicry

Where the Mask of Illusion creates images, this mask creates sound. Based in Sonic powers, and already present in the abilities of Oohnorak.

Mask of Disintegration

Causes an inorganic object to turn to dust. If the object is very large the mask may only be able to destroy parts of it at a time.

Mask of Analysis

Reads information about the targeted object or being and feeds it directly into the user's mind.

Mask of Protection (EDIT: Apparently something similar is called the Mask of Quarantine in the EM)

Unlike a Mask of Shielding, this mask entirely envelops the user in a force field. The force field stops blows, projectiles and dangerous substances from touching the user, but does not have any reflective force. Also unlike Shielding, the protective shell is more taxing to keep up.

Mask of Duplication

Creates a copy of any given object which the user is in close proximity of. The process takes time to complete, forming the new object by gathering particles from the immediate surroundings. If the right materials are not present, the process can fail entirely. Generally, the larger and more complex the object, the more time it takes to duplicate.

The EM topic's formatting is entirely broken, so I didn't bother to read it all for already suggested Kanohi.

I like those suggestions. :) Very well thought out. But I must remark, that the mask of shielding does project a force shield around its user, as stated in Biosector01, so would the mask of protection work against ambushes as well, or were you going to add a different type of protection then?

How about a Mask of Leaping? I know it was mentioned as a joke sort of in Bionicle Legends 3, and thus maybe it already exists in the MU canon. (I don't remember all the canon Kanohi powers off the top of my head.) But I still think it would be a cool power. It would give one the ability to leap great distances, after all. :P

The mask would essentially give you armor of a sorts which works regardless of whether you can see the attack coming or not. The Hau requires you to be aware of an incoming attack for the sphere-shaped field to deflect it. Essentially a Mage Armor/Stoneskin spell. :)

Oh so it's a more form fitting shield instead of a energy field that is kept a few feet away from the user?

well I love this topic, I have been pondering over this for a while and have come up with a couple ideas: Mask of immortality, it makes you immortal(Duh), Mask of Direction, it lets you have a map of all of the planet you are on in your mind, Mask of Tech, able to hack any machinery with your mind, Mask of Animal Spirit, ability to transform your body into any spiritual animal(owl, lion, eagle, and so on), Mask of invention, able to create any weapon but boosted with the power of the great beings. All of these masks are used by 5 Toa that exist in an alternate dimension where the Toa Metru failed in defeating roodaka in which Keetongu was killed by sidorak in a twist of fate when he and roodaka merged. Altogether causing a chain reaction where the Toa Mata were never released onto mata nui but instead these 5.

Here's a couple ideas of mine for mask powers:

Kanohi Aranga (maori word meaning 'rise to the surface' or resurrect) - Mask of Resurrection. It works kind of like Matoro's Mahri mask, however, the target is permanently brought back from the dead but only if their soul is bonded with a second target who is already alive, so basically, if the living target bonds with the dead target, the death of one of them means they both die.

Kanohi Porangi - Mask of Mental Overflow. This mask allows the user to make a target become stressed by overthinking their own thoughts or in some cases cause a seizure due to too many neurons firing at once inside the brain.

I really like pudding, okay?

Here's a huge load of masks from the Expanded Multiverse, which is semi-canon. www.bzpower.com/board/topic/5975-official-expanded-multiverse-reference-topic/#entry354684

For the record, the EM is "fanon", not semi-canon. Yes, Greg approved our use of the canon Olmak, and a handful of other EM things were canonized, but most of the masks at that list are entirely non-canon. :) -bones

Mask of immortality, it makes you immortal(Duh)

Well, immortality is actually never "duh" because it can take so many different forms. Do you mean it stops you from aging, or do you still grow older while just not dying? Is the mask meant to keep you from dying from disease, wounds, and so on, or is physical protection meant to be out of its league?

Mask of Animal Spirit, ability to transform your body into any spiritual animal(owl, lion, eagle, and so on)

Are we talking about turning into a ghostly Rahi, or am I misunderstanding?

Mask of invention, able to create any weapon but boosted with the power of the great beings.

Sounds OP. ;) We got the Mask of Creation in canon, which can do similar things, but that is classified as one-of-a-kind and Legendary to boot.

The rest of your ideas sound nice and straight to the point, but I'm curious about your intended details for these. :)

A mask of Ventilation sounds useless/lame, but if you think about it, it could be pretty handy. Decreasing a living thing's temperature by "extracting" heat from it's pores or something like that, cooling down steaming cracks in the earth, removing smoke from the air. A possibly extra ability could be being able to travel through vents, but I'm not sure how useful that would be in the MU.

Most of the Makuta powers would make good masks. My Toa characters wear a Mutaka (Shapeshifting), Akavakaku (Laser Vision), and Pukama (Slowing). I'd also like to see a Mask of Adhesion, which could cause surfaces to cling together.

( The bunny slippers hiss and slither into the shadows. ) -Takuaka: Toa of Time

What if the Toa you know best were not destined to be? Interchange: The epic begins

Again, if any names or powers in this post is already listed, I apologize. I got limited time to browse that topic ATM.

Mask of Phaselocking

Prevents the target from using teleportation, dimensional gates, spirit walk, intangibility, superspeed and similar powers by forcing the particles in its body to "stick together". Can be used in a pinch to make liquids solid, but is not as precise or diverse as the Density Control power.

Mask of Elemental Adaptation

For as long as you can keep your focus, your elemental power adapts certain traits from the environment. For example, near water fire could become gooey and napalm-like.

Mask of Explosions (Straight out of Zelda)

Creates a violent explosion at a short distance from yourself. The close proximity can easily make you hurt yoursel on accident.

Sounds kind of like an all-purpose Kaukau, allowing the user to breathe not just underwater but in lower air or toxic environments. I think that's pretty neat :)
